Thirsty Dog Cerberus

Thirsty Dog Cerberus

This beer is made with one grain and 4 Belgian yeasts, a deceptive golden color, and a malty palate lend complexity to this Belgian Trippel Ale.
ABV = 10%, IBU’s = 31, OG = 23.1 P

The three headed Hellhound of Greek Mythology, that stood at the gates to Hades, lends his name and three heads to this elegant, full bodied Belgian Style Trippel Ale. A deceptive golden color and wonderful malty palate bring bold complexity to this big brew.

3.4 Approximately 4 oz. pour from a 12 oz. bottle, provided by falco242. Consumed on 4-19-14. Pours a hazy tan-ish color with taupe head. Very juicy aroma features apple juice and apricot nectar scents. Very sweet taste features a caramel flavor. This is so sweet and juicy that it stretches the boundaries of an abbey tripel and reminds me of a paler version of an English-style barleywine.
3.4 Bottled. Orangey yellow pour. Wgitesh head. Fruits and Belgian candy sugars. Pretty decent but not spectacular.
3.8 Bottle courtesy of falco242. No real Belgian notes in the nose. Murky dark gold with particalia. Rich aroma with a hint of molasses. Quite sweet, with burnt caramel flavors. Sweetness is not Belgian candidate sugar. Very good. Unique take on the style almost an American take on it.
3.3 Rated on 5-02-2011 (Bottle) This beer has a small white head that fully diminshes, slightly hazy golden body, fizzy carbonation, floaties, and spotty amounts of lacing. The aroma is caramel malt, fruity and citrus. The taste is sweet, malty, fruity, spicy, and some hops. The mouthfeel is mildly lively and this beer is medium bodied. This is a big sipping beer as the ABV comes through in the flavor and in a good way. There are better beers of this style, but this is still worth trying.
4.1 12 ounce bottle into chalice, no bottle dating. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy orange amber color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big apricot, peach, pear, apple, orange peel, honey, candi sugar, bread, clove, light pepper, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast and malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big apricot, peach, pear, apple, orange peel, honey, bread, candi sugar, clove, herbal, floral, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of apricot, peach, pear, apple, orange, honey, bread, candi sugar, clove, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity of fruity/earthy yeast and pale malt flavors; with a great malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth and moderately slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent tripel style! All around great complexity and balance of fruity/earthy yeast ester and malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
3.7 Pours cloudy orange with a small beige head, creamy with nice lacing. Aroma is sweet oranges, yeast, biscuit, floral notes, caramel. Flavor is the same, quite sweet, floral, bit of orange zest bitterness, some herbal notes, lingering bitter finish. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel.
3.8 Bottle thanks to artmcd8, thanks! Pours a hazy dark orange with a thin head, aroma is solid, good amount of sweetness and fruit like with a little bit of the Belgian yeast coming through, the flavor has a fruity front end with a sweeter finish, the booze is tasted a little in the finish with some warming, full mouthfeel, not watery by any means, not a huge fan of the style overall, but this is solid and enjoyable, nice.
3.4 Nice. Pours orange with decent head and lacing. Coriander, booze, nice balance. Good balance and good tripel if nothing super exciting. Bottle.
3.6 355ml bottle. Pours a brilliant, opaque orange with a half-finger head that thins quickly. Very slight sediment floating around. Aroma is a big ball or orange mixed with some farmhouse funk, alcohol, and candy sugar. Taste is a sweet but not sickening with a moderate alcohol warmth and a bit of funk on the finish. Medium body with a low-medium carbonation. Moderately slick and coating in the mouth with a drawn out sugary/bitter aftertaste. Overall this is exactly what it says it is. Belgian Style Tripel. Fairly strong alcohol warmth but with a lighter, more citrusy taste mixed in. Good show. I might get again to re-try next time I can.
3.9 P: A cloudy speckled bright apricot color with little to no head development. Only a few big bubbles around the edge. S: Pumpernickel bread, tropical fruits, clove, cardamom, coriander, toasted caramel, sugar malt, banana taffy, yikes stripes fruit striped gum, sweet booze and cinnamon. T/M: A malted bomb exploded in my mouth. Sweet with floral perfume presence. Sweet candied sugar, toasted caramel, loads of tropical fruit followed up with a white wine similarity. Once swallowed the sweet malt is overtaken by the spices and lingering of rum. Chewy body with moderate carbonation. Finishes dry and chalky. O: This is truly a three headed monster. Sweet succulent malts, fruits, spices, yeasty bread and booze. What more could you ask for in a tripel. This really surprised me. I figured it would be decent but this surpassed my expectations and in glad I grabbed this up. This is a definite need to try.
3.2 Pours hazy orange amber with a slight creamy beige head. Aromas of fruit and yeast spice. Med body. flavor is yeasty and fruity. There’s banana for sure. It’s very tasty. Dry and spicey finish. Hardly a trace of heat.
2.7 Big Top Beverage Mart, Rosyln variety case: Cloudy golden orange with a little head. Aroma is a bit malty, somewhat fruity. Taste is really sharp and a little bit too boozy. Aftertaste is a little too hard as well. I really don’t like this. I had some yesterday and some more today, and it did not get any better.
3.4 Aroma is yeast, malts and baking spices. The flavor is spices, malts, light sweetness and a tangy/mildly tart finish.
2.9 bottle. Golden with lots of sediment and small head. Not sure why there’s this much sediment in a tripel. This is pretty boozy, but flavor gets better as it warms up.
4.1 Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a murky amber-tan color with a small foamy white head that faded quickly and left good lacing. The aroma was sweet with notes of fresh cut peaches and pears. The flavor was sweet and tangy table sugar followed by an almost overwhelming boozy presence that then led to notes of peach, pear, honey and bread. Long boozy finish with lingering peach and pear notes. Full bodied. Other than the massive booziness a really enjoyable brew.
3.3 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine, Greenville, SC. Pours a darker than anticipated orange with a frothy off-white head. Aroma of light candi sugar and citrus. The taste is more malt forward than most tripel’s giving the beer a sweeter taste than expected. The lingering sweetness on the palate is not too cloying and is cut by the alcohol. This is more of a Belgian Strong Ale than a tripel in my opinion but it is a good beer.
3.2 Poured into a wine glass. Copper color, hazy due to live yeast. 1 finger of head that did not last long. Aroma was very strong banana, reminded me of a California Chardonnay. Taste was sweeter than other triples I’ve had, with a slightly boozy finish. Pretty good beer.
3.0 Pours cloudy gold into a tulip. Bright white head quickly recedes to hug rim. Sour caramel aromas. Dusty caramel and sour fruit front to back. Sweet lasting fruit finish.
3.2 12 ounce bottle. Pours a translucent copper color with a thin white head of foam. The aroma is very light. Vanilla, wood, grainy. The aroma is almost too light to detect. Taste is an estery sweet, malt forward. Drying on the palate. Alcohol is covered for the most part, but there is a twinge of heat in the finish.
2.4 Bottle, I know I had this one as well as I remember the name, bottle and even the flavor. Heavy banana, and Belgian-y esters flowed in this one, lightly boozy with notes of pear, apple, grape juice and some light vegetal notes. Most American made triples are pretty bad and this was no exception.
3.4 12 oz. Bottle. A quality trippel, high on flavor, and low on scent. The musty, custard scent was the low point. Otherwise, it was a beautiful pour, cloudy dark copper with a white foamy pour. Medium bodied, creamy texture to a dry finish. Apricot and pear fronted flavor to a banana custard and cream finish.
2.5 Appearance: Pours a lightly hazed, golden-colored body with a medium-small, fleeting, white head. Nil lacing. Smell: Yields a somewhat sugary nose, but also an aroma of fruit cocktail, with alcohol replacing the precious juices with which it usually packed. Taste: Simple, modest malted grains glazed in simple syrup. A little bubblegum, a bit more sugar advancing, then, some fruitiness of strawberry, peach, and melon juice. A couple whole buds of clove. If it stopped there, I’d be content, but it has a real sharp sting from the alcohol, with a touch of acetone to it, leaving a lingering singe in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-low carbonation. Overall: Hot, but not in a good way. It’s harshness and brash character overrides any goodness. This is unfortunate. Instead of a bottle capped with gold foil, it deserves to be sheathed in a brown paper bag.
3.7 Cloudy medium amber with a full, long-lasting, rim head and swirls of lace. The taste is big caramel malt that grows wonderfully through the palate to an alcohol infused finish. No doubt about the 10%abv. Well-conceived, and highly enjoyable.
4.3 Had this on tap 2 months ago at TD and was told it was not sold in bottles. DANG! Surprised to find it in bottles at Whole Foods Columbus. Had to take it home since I am a huge trippel fan. Better than remembered. Sweet maltiness of a belguim with creamy head & exquisite scent. First taste took me back my glass of on tap Cerberus. Not dissappointed with it bottled at all. Sediment in the bottom tells me I am getting the real deal. THANKS to TD for making this happen. I fell in love all over again.
3.4 12 oz bottle, Whole Foods Columbus. Cap had a bit of yeast growth or rust or mold around the rim of the bottle; barely reddish gold; lively carbonation but virtually no head following the pour; big chunks of yeast mostly stayed at the bottom of the bottle and were discarded. Aroma very sweet, candy, a little spicy, barely yeasty. Flavor is sweet, a touch spicy, honey, and as it warms the alcohol is evident in the taste and exhale; dry finish. Palate medium-thick though only lightly sticky. Long way from the top, but a decent warming Belgian.
3.0 Bottle from DiarmaidBHK - I’ll be honest, I had this one like a month ago and fell asleep before I took many notes, so I don’t really remember it. It was decent, but not spectacular.
3.5 Cloudy gold pour, fluffy white head. Mandarin oranges, candy sugar, yeasty esthers, graham cracker and sugar cookies. A bit sweet up front, but stil pretty good.
2.9 A hazed dark golden ale with a thin off white head. Strange aroma of Orange Pledge (or citrus based cleaner) with solvents and alcohol, so-so. In mouth, a decent candy sugar malt with smooth orange pulp, a bit thin but good.
3.7 Pours a hazy amber with a moderate amount of head. Smells of honey and candy. Very sweet smelling. Very fragrant. Palate is slightly viscous with nice carbonation. Taste is caramel and a little coconut. Tasty brew.
2.0 Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm. Cloudy pale amber, small head. Sugary sweet. Marzipan and sugar. Full bodied with soft mouthfeel. Sugar and resin. Loads of sweet marzipan. Some juicy coriander. Super sweet finish. Just too sweet - not too style.
