Thornbridge Kill Your Darlings

Thornbridge Kill Your Darlings

Vienna lagers, named after the city they were originally brewed in, has become a classic style of lager but one rarely brewed in the UK. Thornbridge’s take on the style is “Kill Your Darlings” which is reddish brown in colour with a medium body and characterized by a malty aroma and slight malt sweetness. A twist on this style has been added by late hopping with Amarillo and Tettnanger hops. After a period of cold fermentation the beer has been lagered for five weeks. “We have done the waiting so that you can enjoy the crisp fresh flavours and in our opinion this is a beer best drunk as fresh as possible” says Brewery Production Director, Rob Lovatt.

3.5 Appearance- amber, ruby hints, quite clear, a thick beige head which slowly diminishes. Aroma- caramel, bready malt, brown sugar, cake, raisin, biscuity malt. Taste- crisp hops, banana bread, malt loaf, hints of sugary dark fruit. Mouthfeel is carbonated, and slightly watery. Slightly sweet finish with caramel hints. Good.
4.0 Something about this beer. I love a Vienna lager and this hits all the right notes. It’s got a sweet malt aroma, caramel, some citrus, then the taste follows suit. It’s hoppy and crisp, some biscuity and pine notes, finishing really clean, and it just drags you in. Delicious, refreshing, easy-drinking.
3.0 Keg @ Drink? Hebden Bridge. Clear mid-brown with a creamy off-white head. Has a crisp darker sweetness running through the ale with toffee notes which are at their most stated in its taste.
