Three Floyds Alpha Klaus

Three Floyds Alpha Klaus

Alpha Klaus is Alpha King’s cousin. A big American X-mas Porter brewed with English chocolate malt and Mexican sugar and of course tons of strange American hops! Cheers.

3.6 Pours a dark brown with a tan foam head. Aroma is earth, roast, and chocolate. Flavor is bitter roast and chocolate. Pretty good.
3.8 Grabbed a bottle from Julios. Dark pour and ok sized head. Law is light roast and molasses. Tastes of ash, brown sugar, bitter dark chocolate, earthy, licorice. Lighter bodied than expected.
3.1 Christmas in June. 12 oz. bottle from Craft Brewed in Nashville, TN. Pours a super dark brown color with a large tight light brown head and great retention. Great lacing too. Coffee and treacle/molasses aroma. Similar flavors: Roasted coffee and malts are dominant with a strong treacle/molasses finish. Medium-heavy body. Semi-slick mouthfeel. Low carbonation and light bitterness. Classic porter, but too much molasses for me.
3.8 12oz Bottle. Black with medium thick tan head. Big nose of chocolate and light roast. Taste is sugar first, then porter malt roast, then chocolate. Long finish. A nice porter, albeit on the sweeter side.
4.1 Aroma brings roasted malts and coffee, brightened by citrus and pine. This mix is really nice. Roasted and bright. Impenetrable black topped by a tall head, a bit darker than tan, thick and creamy. Excellent retention. Gobs and rings of thick lacing as it recedes. The top of the head remains thick and mounded. The taste is as expected from the aroma. Roasty, malty, coffee backed by the citrus and pine from the hops. A little bittering throughout to remind you who brewed this beer, not overly bitter. In other words, the bittering acts to balance things, not dominate things. Some roasted chocolate and a bitter-sweetness as from molasses. The finish is mildly bitter with the bright citrus and pine lingering, and dry enough to invite another drink. The body is moderate for the style, with some nice carbonation contributing as well. Not your typical porter, but what do you expect? It's 3 Floyds, after all. A very tasty and enjoyable Christmas porter.
4.0 On tap at As Is. Pours black. Roast, coffee, chocolate, prune, pine, orange. Good full body. Excellent.
2.9 Pours black with a one finger, tan head. Aroma is roast, molasses and spruce hops. Taste is brown sugar, moving to roast and spruce needles. Finish is brown sugar and spruce.
4.2 Twelve ounce bottle. Easily one of the best in its class. Dark ebony with a dark beige head. medium spiced with a nice nose to it. They hit a home run with this.
3.2 on tap at The Hulmeville Inn - nice dark color. Starts out sweet but finishes spicy with a slightly odd flavor.
3.8 Pours a dark brown color, lots of bitter malts in the taste, definitely its defining quality, very smooth, tap.
3.9 12 ounce bottle. opaque black brown color. Small bubbly tan head. Roasted malt aroma is somewhat subdued. Flavor is roasted malt and treacle. Quite hoppy for a Porter. Resiny hops throughout. Complex and potent.
3.5 Served up on tap at Busters on a Friday night. Snifter glass. Darker cola brown...almost black. Strong lacing initially. Aroma is floral with hops taking charge. There are characteristics of spices present but they are mostly drowned out. Taste plays into its bitterness to a degree. There's an undercurrent of malty sweetness but mostly overwhelmed by the crazy hops. Dark chocolate bitterness finishes things off. Falls short of what I expected.
4.8 Pours a deep, non-translucent black with an uncommonly viscous head. Roasted malts are unexpectedly dry and pleasantly bitter. Very good.
4.2 Pours root beer brown with a brown tinted head. Has a definite chocolate note, sugar, and hops. Dry hopped finish. Really interesting dry porter, not overly sweet. Coffee notes at the end.
4.1 Aroma is dark malts, smoked grain, chocolate and toffee. Taste is dark sweet malts, caramel, rye spice, and a mild spiciness and odd hop profile.
4.4 Big roasty and chewy bitter tobacco like chocolate in ferocious freaky piney and vine hops with ear wax. Some cocoa and i'm gonna say sanka cause i'm friggin tired of saying coffee and this brewer probably never heard of sanka cause they are the epitome of real ingredients. oy yeah oily like Tex..aahhh Michigan crude. Ode to my Ypsilanti fairy.
4.4 Bottle, from 2017. Pours black. Aroma is barrel, chocolate, toffee, caramel, coffee. Body is heavy, strong and rich, with a decent and present carbonation. Still strong flavours, not sticky, but still complex. Very good.
3.6 12 ounce bottle at the house. Somewhat sweet and malt to the nose. Super dark brown in color and brown head. No film on glass. Taste the malt and a little sweet. Medium in body and very smooth. Can't taste the alcohol. Very drinkable porter. Highly recommended. Cheers!
3.9 22floz bottle, date smudged (bought in early 2018), pint glass. Basically a black APA. Near black in color with brown head leaving layered markings. Pine and chocolatey roastedness do battle in the nose and on the palate. Bitterness level is high for a porter, even at just 38 IBU. Much of it could be in conjunction with dark roasted malts, and to what I perceive. Good stuff, medium bodied, but not session able or for taking big swigs.
3.8 355ml bottle from Beermiscious, Chicago. Sweet, syrupy, spicy and roasty with some chocolate, cinnamon, licorice and coffee. Okay, quite spicy and sweetish roasty stout.
4.2 6/13/18: 22 Ounce Bottle, multiple pours into snifter. Pitch black pour, razor thin tan lacing. Sharp sweet licorice, dark chocolate and malt aroma, Sharp malt chocolate taste, licorice, pine and coffee noted as well. Nice blend. Carbonation holds, firm mouth feel, nice solid offering.
4.5 Great stuff. Black pour deep tan head. Aroma is roast chocolate malt. Taste is sweet and bitter chocolate. Love it.
4.5 It is a really nice porter, the Mexican Sugar really does add to the beer. That being said, I’ve had many better porters than this. Even though it is still really good.
4.0 Near black with a half inch tan head. Cocoa, light spices, hop forward, citrus. Medium bodied. Finish has a little heat and the spices tinge the side of the tongue a bit. Very interesting and quite enjoyable.
4.3 On tap at Bacon Hill Pub. Black with foamy tan head. Creamy, smooth, chocolate, roast, nice finish. Good enough I ordered another.
3.6 This isn't nearly as good as the last time I had it. Aroma is roast, cocoa, and hops. Flavor is Hops and bitter with a little bit of roast and cocoa. Body is slightly on the thin side okay finish.
4.1 Bomber bottle. Pours black with thick brown head. Light notes of chocolate powder on the nose. Creamy, bitter dark chocolate flavor with some caramel sugar at the back end. Bitterness from hops stays on the tongue.
3.9 Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head with good retention recedes to skim surface. Cocoa and nutmeg aromas. Soft with chocolate and dry espresso front to back. Thanks TAR for the trade.
3.6 Bomber from Wine & Brew Emporium, Westerville, 12-22-17
4.3 Glorious near-ebony color, pert head. More hoppy and less boozy than most imperial porters. Well balanced with a mild, pleasant lingering bitterness. Very good.
