3.5 Backlog............................ Tap @ Mikkeller & Friends, Copenhagen 20131016.
3.8 Pours a slightly hazy, dark golden orange color with apricot edges and a two finger frothy white head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Good retention, only slowly settling and leaving large steaks of chunky lacing behind. Earthy floral hop aroma with grassy resins and subtle pine along with sweet caramel malt and delicate oak. The oak adds another layer of complexity without overwhelming the the hop and malt notes. Some dry char and earthy wood which compliments the floral/earthy hop notes and sticky reins. Sweeter malt backbone with toffee, biscuit, caramel and dark fruit. Really nice combo of hops, malt and oak in the nose. Flavor is somewhat similar to the aroma but a bit more complex. Much stronger hop profile than the nose suggests with dank, earthy hop bitterness and resinous oils countered by a sweet malt backbone and dry toasted oak. Again, the oak really stands out without overpowering the other notes. This adds another layer of complexity while complimenting the dry bitterness of the hop profile. Pine, grassy resins, and spruce tip followed by caramel, toffee, toast and dark fruit. Oak comes on strong toward the end of the palate contributing to the dry finish. The high ABV is very well masked making this flavorful and complex beer deceptively drinkable.
4.2 Hazy orange with white head. Aroma is bread, herbs and citrus. Taste adds a little malt and ends with pine. Sweet and sticky.
3.3 Bomber purchased at the Party Source in Bellvue, KY. Three Floyds BlackHeart English IPA is a darker amber mostly clear beer with a fine head of larger white bubbles. Nose is a bready malt aroma with hints of herbal hops. Taste is sweeter than anticipated with a bit of citrus and sweet malt resolving into a bit of caramelized malt In the middle. Decent bitters on the back end. A very nice attempt at a different style of IPA than I usually encounter. As an aside, the bottle art is amazing.
3.4 22 oz. bomber. Poured cloudy light amber with thin head. Big malt, oak, sweet licorice. Some tongue stripping pine at the end. Touch of booze.
3.2 Bomber poured into a Sam Adams pint is amber to copper in color with a huge creamy head and thick lacing. Aromas malt forward with raisins, hints of grapefruit and bread. Flavor is mild to medium bitter with a sweetness in the finish.
3.0 Refrigerated brown bomber poured into a snifter. Light orange, herbal hops aroma, and herbal hops. Reminescent of ice tea.
3.7 Aroma is citrus and pine, taste is similar with some lemon grass, fine, just fine
3.4 Bomber from Liquor Central in the Dells, shared with Eric. Amazed for the number of times seen, never have had. Sweet fruit, some spices and earthy malts. Earthier and maltier down through the glass. Not near Three Floyds best. 12.8
3.8 On tap at World of Beer in Brewery District. amber pour finger sturdy white head. aroma of sweet citrus, spruce. tastes are sweetish malt, pine, fruity, bready. light bitter, very drinkable.
4.0 On tap at First Draft. Cloudy yellow pour with a white head. Aroma is alcohol, toasted bread, flowers, and dirt. Taste is bitter, alcohol, more toast, and an earthy finish.
3.5 2017 - 3.5 - fresher bottle. no cardboard. still not very exciting and very little aroma. 2015 - 3.4 - Interesting. The best way to put this. I can sense the super strong English hop. The result a cardboard box hop light licourious. Better than sounds. Goodness more associated with unique flavor. Light English hop aroma fading head. Fuzzy thick on tongue.
3.6 A good hoppy ale. A nice bitter taste which is surprisingly refreshing. Would drink again.
3.1 Bottle. Pours a cloudy orange with small off white head that lasts. The aroma is citrus and tea. Medium mouth, bready malt, citrus, tea, light bitter finish, hides alcohol well, good.
3.9 Pours copper with white head that thins to a collar. Aromas are very faint traces of mango and pine. Taste is subtle hops that fades to bitter. Very drinkable, but nothing stands out about it.
3.8 Nice aromas of toasty grain, melon and some pine resin. Burnt orange color. Taste is unique with fruity IPA standing out and bouncing to some nice bready malt and then the oak finishes things off and smoothes things out. Very good.
4.1 22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 5/4/2015. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy bright orange/amber color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big lemon, orange, pineapple, apricot, pear, apple, pepper, pine, light oak, caramel, toasted bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of earthy hops, fruity yeast, and bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big lemon, orange, pineapple, apricot, pear, apple, pepper, pine, light oak, caramel, toasted bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy spicy/piney bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, orange, pineapple, apricot, pear, apple, pepper, pine, light oak, caramel, toasted bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of earthy hops, fruity yeast, and bready malt flavors; with a crisp malt/yeast/hop balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly crisp/sticky, and slightly creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an excellent English IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of earthy hops, fruity yeast, and bready malt flavors; and very smooth to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering
4.2 Aroma of spicey hops, oak, and orange/tangerine and caramel. Taste is sweet creamy orange on the tip of the tongue, sweet corn malts and caramel in the middle; then lastly a powerful surge of spicey, earthy hops and oak. I am really digging these less hop forward beers from Three Floyd’s.
2.3 Bottle. Murky dark orange pour with a huge, pillowy head that fades very slowly to a thick film. Leaves soapy lacing. Aroma is super sweet candied citrus and caramel. Tastes the same but also a bit stale and old. Hard to describe but I know I don’t like it. Not good.
4.4 Look - Foamy amber orange. Off white head. Not too thick. Lacing is good. Bubbles are small. Smell - Orange and citrus. Faintly dank. There is a caramel and toast aroma as well. Taste - Toast. Caramel. Bitter. Faint dank hops. Bubblegum before the finish. Feel - Creamy and not too much carbonation. Really nice. Overall - I am glad I got to try this beer. It baffle me how each Floyds is distinctly different, but amazing.
3.1 Light copper hazy little head. Honey biscuit caramel. Sweet caramel oaky moderate bitter herbal hops. Semi dry finish. Good but oak may be too much for style.
2.7 Pours an extraordinarily murky orange-golden with a long lasting tan-beige head. Aroma is akin to a wee heavy with a bit of citrus. Chewy. A lot of sweet and rich caramel with citrusy overtones.
4.0 Это пиво вкусное. я, конечно, рекомендую его всем, что любит хорошую Craft пива!
3.5 Bottle shared during HamTech Reunion 2014. Thanks to the Duke, I think. Pours mostly clear gold with a foamy, white head. Pretty sweet overall, with some sugary berries, bread, mild bitterness. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet and lightly warming to finish, with more bready malts and ripening fruits. OK.
3.9 Bottle pours deep yellow with generous shaving cream type head and good lacing. Aroma malts and spicy hops. Taste sweet malts, bready, biscuit with some oak spiciness. Finish hops, somewhat bitter but really more spicy and citric. I’m not a huge hop fan but the hops were not overdone here. Thick palate. Unique enjoyable flavor.
4.0 Cloudy golden pour. Medium sized cream head. Lacing. Malty aroma with some notes of peach. Taste is fruity with some hop aroma coming through in the mouth as well. Sweet finish.
3.3 From old tasting notes - Orangy with flat head. Slight cardboard orange aroma. Spicy sweet stale oranges. Okay.
3.9 "a unique take on an english style ipa for sure, with lots of malt, biscuity character, toasty, but with a strong bitter hop finish and toasted oak undertones. very well done. no way i thought it was 9%."
4.0 22 ounce bottle poured into a tulip. Thanks to my friend Daniel for the trade! Bottle date is a bit smudged but looks like either March or May 2014. Clear golden orange with 3 fingers of off-white head. Nice webby lacing. Aromas of toasty notes, wood, coconut, citrus, a bit of alcohol, light oak. Tastes of citrus, oak, coconut, slight vanilla, floral notes, some alcohol. Medium body with a dry finish. Medium-low carbonation. Oak aging adds some nice flavors and works fairly well. More of an oak aged DIPA to me than an English Style IPA as the label says.
2.5 Pours a clear golden color with a thick white head. Aroma is sweet with a citrus hop bitterness on the nose. Taste is real fruity (apricots?) and light bodied. This was my first Three Floyd’s beer and I’m sure others taste better. This was an interesting start.
