4.2 On tap at Whole Foods. Pours thick black with thin, dark brown head. Aroma is piney hops and dark malt with some licorice. Flavor is hop forward, soapy and then toasty malt. Does verge on black ipa but has the stout body and thickness. Nice dry version of the style. I’m his is what I expect from 3floyds
3.7 January 13, 2018 - bottle from Fish. Black pour with nice tan head. Aroma was roasted malt and piney hops. Taste was consistent with the aroma, but also had a touch of sweetness.
4.4 Incredible imperial stout that is flavorful, smooth, & pretty! Pours black w/ a tan head & loads of lacing. The aroma is coffee, dark malt, & chocolate. The flavor is all of the above with the coffee bitterness intricately blended in to the chocolate sweetness it intertwines with. There's a little bit of alcohol heat but the mouthfeel is so smooth isn't doesn't detract from the beer at all. An outstanding example of the style & overall a tremendous beer!
4.0 Bottle from Crown Liquors: So unique. With a title like this, we should have saved it for the solar eclipse. Giant amount of hops which changes the character of the stout. Big points for uniqueness.
3.6 Bottle share at PinkZambias. Feb 19 ’17 Black with a thin tan head. Classic dark roast, some coffee and bitter chocolate. The main thing here is all the hops. A hoppy imperial stout. Very tasty.
3.8 Bottle thanks to deyholla! Deep brown with a small head. Big and oily. Some acrid char and surprising accents of anise. Dark chocolate. Some coffee.
3.9 Bottle. Pours near black with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of roasted malts with dark grains and a hint smoke underlying. Flavor has a nice slightly smokey roasted malts with some grass, dark grains and a pine bite supporting.
3.6 Dark black pour with a slight head. Malty and a bit of molasses. Roasty and big, bitter and hoppy.
3.9 Bomber shared at tasting. Dark pour. Aroma is like a black ipa. Taste starts that way but something balances it out, really well done.
3.7 Black. Faiy well hopped af dry. Roasted malt, earth, chocolate, and a little coffee. Thixk, heavy palate.
4.0 Bottle shared - thanks! Very dark pour with a beige head. Damn near a black IPA - lots of pine. Plus roast. Very good.
4.1 Appearance: Rich black brown. Finger of tan smaller bubbles. Nose: Bittersweet malt trending toward a touch charred. Just a bit of cocoa. Earthy and notes of resin and spruce. Taste: burnt molasses and dark cocoa. Again earthy with resin and pine hops. Bittersweet fading to bitter and a touch more dry. Body: medium to fuller. Soft carbonation. smooth Parting thoughts: A hoppy Imp Stout that works. Nuianced and complex. Very good.
3.3 Pours a black with a very thin tan head. Sticky lacing. A dark fruit and hop aroma. Roasty and a powder cocoa flavor. Bitterness seems more like a dark chocolate than a hop bitterness.
3.9 Bottle. Nearly black, with a light brown head. Char and chocolate, black bread, hoppy bitter finish. Full bodied, complex, and drinkable.
4.0 On tap at the Nova, pours a dark brown black with a medium tan head. Big fruity citrus hop aroma of dark chocolate malt and a light roast. Smooth thick soft palate. Taste of rich chocolate shake/malt, earthy roast and lightly bitter coffee on the finish. Solid!
3.7 65 cl bottle @ home. Pours black with a tan head that leaves some lacing. Aroma and flavour are roasted, almost burned, malt, chocolate, and liquorice - with a bitter finish.
3.5 Thanks Huhzubendah for sharing the bottle! Poured into a taster showing taster showing pitch black with half a finger of clean white foam. The nose is earthy and hoppy. The palate is full bodied and lightly carbonated. Flavors of hoppy forwardness. Hoppy bitterness.
3.8 Bottled. Pours thick black. The palate is creamy and thick. The taste is chocolate roasty coffee and a little vanilla. Drake fruits and sweet.
4.0 (Three Floyds Blot Out the Sun) Bottle 650ml at home, thanks to rxeight! Served into a snifter, bottled on 15/1/16 Black coloured body, one finger of thick, dark beige head on top, with good retention. Aroma has light citrus, hops, resin, roasted malts. Taste has fruity notes of citrus, grapefruit, oranges, light chocolate and alcohol, roasted malts on the finish, hoppy bitterness. Medium thick body, good carbonation. Tasty, pretty close to a black IPA.
3.8 Thick deep brown, roasty, smoky dark fruits. Flavour is fruity , boozy and bitter chocolate, not bad
3.6 Bottle... Pours dark brown with a small, creamy, khaki head. Decent retention. The aromatic highlights are charcoal and resin. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel with laid-back carbonation. The flavor features roastiness, singed malts and resiny bitterness. No real chocolatiness here - just roastiness. Moderate bitterness and alcohol warmth in the finish. Bottle shared by growler!
3.7 22 ounce bottle from Badger Spirits (February 2016), served around cellar temp or perhaps a bit above in a Maudite snifter. Not-quite-opaque dark maple to black with a largish, slow-diminishing maple-cream head and a bit of fine lacing...nose is burnt chocolate, grapy-vinous, a bit of resinous hops, licorice - pleasant enough but not particularly potent or exciting...body is chocolaty-sweet, lightly acidic, some faint lactic-sour qualities, with a finish that is still fairly sweet but a touch more bitter, woody, and at least a littler drier...mouthfeel is quite soft, carbonation muted but noticeable...very smooth and easy-drinking Impy with almost no alcohol noticeable. This is reasonably solid and I’m glad that I can get it easily, given the unavailability to peons like me of Dark Lord - but at the same time, I can’t help remembering every sampling I’ve had of the latter, and good as this is, well...
4.0 Pours a deep brownish black from the bomber with thin ring of bubbly tan brown head. Aroma of dark chocolate, tobacco earth, smoky roast notes, and a hint of booze. Taste is more of the same, good balance of deep roasted flavors, booze is well hidden. Thick and chewy, minimal carbonation, hint of oxidation, overall nice stout, as expected from them.
4.2 Aroma - has big alcohol, deep roast, acrid roast, and licorice. Appearance - the body is black, the head is 2" and beige in color. The head settles very slowly, an island of steady foam. Some alcohol cloying. Taste - has rich caramelized sugars, roast, vanilla, coffee, touch of anise, and Pacific Northwest variety hops. Exceptionally well balanced. Palate - full body, sticky texture, average carbonation, and a micro second of bitters and astringent that drops like a rock. Wow!
3.6 Bottle. Pours a dark, murky, brown/black with a foamy tan head. Aroma of soy sauce, smoke, alcohol, leather, some chocolate, sweet malts. Flavor follows the nose, overly smokey and heavy on the soy sauce taste. Interesting. Full bodied, oily texture, soft carbonation, alcohol on the finish.
3.9 Draft at RB Best Fest: Poured a black with tan head. Aroma is very boozy and roast. Taste is boozy, roasty malts, vanilla.
3.5 Bottle shared with Frank. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, earthy hops, some chocolate. Appearance is dark dark brown, light brown, poured thin. Taste is roasted malt, earthy hops, dirt, coffee, eh. Mouthfeel is medium body, light carbonation, dirt and earthy hops aftertaste. Overall, eh. I’ve had been.
2.1 [ bottle ][ 1.5oz ][ @Tasting ][ $? ][ Schnapps snifter ][ 03.25.16 ] black with thin cream ring, lacing and oily cap. Booze dominates light gum-sweet esters and rubber. Front palate stings, burnt sugar dominates with light gum elements mid-palate, finishes some roast, softer toast and dough in the end.
4.1 Aromas of brownies, cocoa, dark roasted malts, cocoa, toffee, earth, pipe tobacco and slight piney hops. Pours black with a thin white foam and oil tracings on the top. Taste brings heavy earthy, ashy, chocolate, charcoal and cigar smoke upfront. Mid palate brings sweet milk chocolate, tree bark, roasted malts, dark grains and black licorice. Finishes smooth with residual hop oils, coffee oils, chocolate, licorice and raisins. Overall, a very unique take on a stout with a massive body and complexity. This sets the bar for non BA Imperial Stout. This is a real treat.
3.4 Very dark brown pour. No head. Aroma is sweet and grainy. Taste leans toward a molassus. Leans overly sweet.
