Three Floyds BrooDoo

Three Floyds BrooDoo

This beer is brewed during the hop harvest with a portion of unkilned or “wet” hops fresh off the vine. Apricot in color, Broo Doo’s nose has dominant orange, pine sap and floral notes, balanced by a glazed nut and toffee malt body. This celebration of the hop harvest has intense tropical fruit, citrus and spicy accents that showcase the complexity of the hops we all love. October release.

3.6 Bottle from Big Red Liquors (Keystone Shoppes). Orange appearance with mild haze and a fluffy light beige head. Aroma of toasted malt, zesty hops, mild fruitiness, light pine and a light herbal spice. Similar flavor, adding moderate hop bitterness and balanced by a light sweetness. Medium body with ample carbonation and a smooth finish. Hints of cardboard/oxidation. Good, but would like to try it fresh.
3.8 Bottle. Hazy orange body, thick puffy off-white head. Nose of bubblegum, tropical fruit, and citrus. Complex body with tangerine, tropical fruit, citrus, melon, and leafy bitterness. Yum.
3.9 Aroma: floral notes, clearly detectable fresh hops, nice and balanced caramel notes, then citrus notes (tangerine), conifers, well balanced. Taste: conifer and caramel domination. Average to high bitterness, in aftertaste too. Average carbonation, very nice head with lacing. Color is orange, hazy. UPDATE: Generally, during drinking caramel was more and more detectable.
3.7 Rating 666 of this beer? Maybe I shouldn't rate it? Typical three Floyd citrus balanced with lots of pine dank with solid malt backbone. Nose is all these things but fades. Flavor is same and builds with a bit of soapiness. Thick chewy full bodied lots of flavor for fresh hop beer.
4.0 650 bottle. Hazy straw color with a white head. Citrus mango pineapple aroma. Juicy citrus little dank bitter flavor. Medium body. Complex flavor. Clean finish.
3.0 It's not normal harvest ale. Dark golden color - just passed fresh hop season but this was overly malty and old - definitely not expected from the makers of world class IIPAs and pales. Earth, toffee, some pine and citrus peel. Not a huge fan.
3.7 On tap at Lunar Brewing Co., and shaker served showing a clear, golden hue, with a fluffy layer of soft white froth, and wavy spray as lacing. The nose started slightly dank & resinous, then expressive fruity pit variety & citrusy perfume, with a bit of tropical scent, and some mellowing malt. Medium bodied, with good carbonation, the taste was similar notes, adding decent citrusy & rind-like bitterness. Clean and smooth to the bottom of the glass. A well made IPA, but nothing 3F extraordinary.
3.4 Backlog entry. Good flavors, close to style, as expected without too many surprises.
3.5 Nice wet hop beer. Aroma was fresh hops. Grassy and green with notes of grapefruit rind. Pour was a nice hazy medium gold with a thin white film for a head. Taste was bitter, hoppy and delicious. One of the few wet hop beers that I’ve had that you can actually tell it’s wet hopped. Nice green and bitter hoppiness with all the grapefruit rind and grassiness from the aroma. A hint of light malt for good measure but thankfully, not enough to balance the beer out. Very hop forward and delicious. Medium carbonation and strong wet bitter finish.
4.1 22 oz bottle poured. Fresh Hop month continues, and in quite the fine style. Much thanks to Tcon (and Jon) for the share! Bottle date smudged off, unfortunately. Adds some mystery. Didn't think I'd ever enjoy a fresh hop 3F anywhere but the source. Mostly clean golden orange pour. A piney first, orange and citrus second, flavor profile. Cool, resinous hops. Delicious. Refreshing IPA. Standout, lingering hop presence. Memorable IPA for sure.
4.0 Bottle pour at home, thanks Jon for bringing me this one. Crisp golden pour, thin head. Thin hop aroma, flavor is crisp with some bite full hop present little floral small malty nots and tropical finish. Awesome beer.
3.5 Tap at brewery. Amber with medium white lacing. Apricot, powder sugar, resiny and tangerine aromas. Light sweetness with citrusey bitter aftertaste. Medium body with a fizzy feel.
4.0 Harsh in the nise bit my bottle wasnt fresh. Still taste is well ballanced sweetness and hops. Finish is smooth.
4.5 Shared bottle at Craft. Poured hazy straw with off-white head. Nose was resiny hops, pine, grapefruit, pineapple. Rich, complex flavor, a lot dancing around on the tongue, great hop bitterness coupled with tropical citrus. Outstanding.
4.4 Light haze to the otange pour with lasting white head. Aroma is funky citrus. Taste is funky citrus and malt. Very pleasant.
4.3 On tap at Crest in Clintonville: amber-gold with frothy khaki head. aroma of pleasant grapefruit, floral. tastes are floral, herbal, dank, resiny - backed by citrus perfect balance. hint of tea vibe. long even floral bitter finish. super creamy and tingly palate. pretty amazing - I passed on other ticks to have another pint of this.
4.0 cloudy orange amber with an active slight off white head. strong resin and citrus tones, dank. solid bitterness atop medium body. finish is dry.
4.4 Tasted from a bottle. Pours a slightly hazy orange with thick white head. Aroma is huge fruit forward. Notes of grapefruit, papaya, orange, lemon, pineapple. Taste is moderate to heavily bitter. Flavors of citrus and tropical fruit, some pine and resin, a little floral flavor. Overall an excellent IPA.
3.9 Bomber- pours a bright orange with thick white head. Nose - fresh tropical fruit, apricot and mellon. Taste- sugar cookies, slightly grassy but low levels compared to many other wet hop beers. dry resin finish. Crisp and very drinkable.
3.8 Bottle dated 22 Sept Pours bright clear orange with a small soapy white head with some whispy lacing. Nose is floral slightly catty sweet malt base crackers very solid. Flavors are very catty lots of tart tropical hops and fairly bitter yet balanced with sweetness. My main gripe is that it’s very catty on the flavors. Fairly dry finish I am thinking dry rye malt or maris otter.
4.1 Very crisp all hop flavor in this brew. Good bitter flavor but very good over all. All hops in this with a touch of caramel malt.
3.7 Bottle from Cappy’s Norwood. There’s a derth of wet-hop offerings on the shelves here that I’ve seen, so was pretty happy that these came to town. But I have to confess -- I find myself wanting to enjoy FFF brews more than I actually do. I’ve become more reluctant to pull the trigger, but it’s the right time of year to buy a $10 fresh-hop IPA I guess. I dig the commercial description of "apricot" in color -- I’d have gone with "pale", but apricot sounds more aromatic. Great head -- they sure do get good head. Aroma leaves a bit to be desired. I get apple juice, light orange, floral notes, a bit spicy -- sort of a hodge podge of what I just used to call "hoppy" 4 years ago with a healthy dose of apples. Moderately sweet, a fair bit of caramel to carry the assertively bitter finish -- again, something that 4 or 5 years ago I would have praised as "balanced," back when I wanted all the badass punch to the throat hop bitterness with a sweet front end. Palate: medium body, average carbonation, texture somewhere between oily and creamy. Overall: I wish I was hanging around this scene 10 years ago -- I expect brews like these could have been a revelation, and probably paved the way for a lot of the amazing brews I already take for granted today. But divorced from FFF’s history and pioneer status, it’s really hard for me to find much here that’s exciting, or demanding of a repeat at $10/bomber. tl; dr summary (borrowed from OldMrCrow): Solid, but I’d rather have a 6er of Celebration.
3.8 Clear pale orange with a white head. Loads of floral and pine notes, plenty of sweetness, light malt notes underneath. Mostly, this is a floral/pine bomb from start to finish. Medium bitterness. Very enjoyable.
3.9 Bottled. Pours nice clear cooper. Piney floral aroma. The palate is sticky and full body. The taste is awesome, floral piney hops. Orange zesty and a malty sweet backbone. Great drink.
3.8 Bottle from Clint (starcross) -- cheers, buddy! My main two impressions from this beer were 1) Lots of wet hop aroma and flavor, and 2) pretty full caramel sweet malt taste. I’m a bit hit-or-miss with wet hops -- I find them to be fresh but not as flavorful -- but this is really well done. Very sweet for an IPA, but still really good!
4.3 22 ounce bottle into signature teku glass, bottled on 9/24/2015. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy orange/amber color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big tangerine, pineapple, grapefruit, peach, apricot, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, pineapple, grapefruit, peach, apricot, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, pineapple, grapefruit, peach, apricot, mango, lemon/orange rind, pine, caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy hop earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/piney hops and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero astringent bitterness after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitterness; with increasing dryness and bitterness through the glass as more hop oils linger on the palate. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately sticky/resinous, and creamy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming lingering after the finish. Overall this is an incredible harvest IPA. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/piney hops and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.
3.2 It’s alright........................................................................................................................................................................................................
4.2 Bottle from Big Red Liquor, Indianapolis. Pours a clear orange body under a large white head that reduces with a high pillow of foam. The aroma is heavy with malty bread and caramel with traces of perfume and pine. Flavors are not as strong as the aroma, yet still display complexity. Notes of tangerine, orange popsicle, cream, vanilla, bubblegum, subtle caramel; all swirling around with a pleasant resinous hops presence that does not overpower the other flavors. Light/medium carbonation and medium body. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every offering I’ve tried so far from Three Floyds and this is no exception.
4.0 Pours light cloudy amber with low white head. Aroma of resin, grapefruit, light caramel, mango. Taste is resinous bitter with mellow fruit sweet finish, lingering bitterness. Light to medium body, smooth, with soft carbonation.
4.0 Pretty typical good fresh hop pale ale. Not as pungent as something like Alpha King but still solid.
