3.3 Bottle at Dark Lord Day while waiting in line. Thanks for the share. Poured dark brown. I would have liked to had more. Kind of dark with small fruit coming through. Overall decent beer. Would have again.
3.9 Thanks Josh - this was a personal whale! The brew pours dark chocolate in color with a nice brown hue. The aroma has notes of sweetness and smokiness. It is not surprisingly similar to the Palo Santo in flavor being that they used the same palo santo wood from South America to brew it. The flavors bring out some sweetness unique to that barrel, but it is definitely a potent brew with a rich body as well.
3.0 Bottle thanks to Alex, into a Bells glass...First off, that is one cool as bottle, one of the best labels ever...Pours a light brown color, light tan head, nothing of note...The aroma is only the lighter side, roasty nuts and alcohol are about all I get. The taste is not good, maybe this was better fresh, but the 10% just shines through, a very harsh woody beer, lack of nuttiness that I want in a brown.
3.7 Bottle from 2009 Dark Lord day. The aroma is some licorice, raisin, malty. Pours a dark brown with a fully diminishing light brown head, no lacing. The flavor is bitter. The body is a little watery, didn’t hold up as well as I thought it would.
3.4 Courtesy of exiled. Clear ruby brown color/ tan head. Nutty, dark caramel, medium roast aromas. Roasted nuts, roasted malt, toasted caramel flavors with a mild spicy sweetness.
3.6 bottle, thanks to exiled, brown pour with no head, caramel and cocoa aroma, flavor is sweet maple sugar, cocoa and caramel, nice beer
3.5 Thanks to Exiled for sharing this bottle. The beer pours a brownish color with a tan head. The aroma is classic brown ale with a lot of toffee and caramel notes, as well as some grassy hops. The flavor is more of the same. I get toffee, caramel, some nuttyness and some grassy hops. The beer is very well balanced between hop bitterness and malt sweetness. The alcohol is very well hidden. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
3.9 Bottle with big thanks to exiled! Happy to see this one. Dark brown color with reddish tints in the light. Foamy brown head. Aroma is lots of chocolate malts, dry grains, a touch of hops and earthy clay. Sweet clay flavor with fresh malts and cocoa beans. Very nice finish. Well done.
3.6 bottle thanks to exiled. poured a deep brown with ruby highlights. nose is caramel, dried hops, and fruits. thick on the palate, chewy caramel malts, light fruits, hops, and rather sweet.
3.6 Pours a dark yellowish brown color with a medium sized bubbly white head. Very herbal and spicy. Lots of clove, leather, bay leaves, crystalized Ginger, and tea. Thick mouthfeel but just not that delicious.
4.2 This beer pours a deep reddish amber with a thin off white head. The aromas are chocolate, roasted coffee. The mouthfeel is stick and a little watery with a bitterness and medium body. Good beer! Cheers!
4.1 A: Very deep, nutty brown. Not quite the color of Palo Santo, likely more toward the color of DFH Indian Brown. S: Lots of brown malt going into this one, with a little bit of the wood coming through in the nose. There is some caramel, toffee, hints of wood, brown sugar, and some dried fruits. Overall, a mild sweetness lingers and awaits my lips. T: Very similar to the smell with a touch more of the wood. The flavor profile is a bit muted at fridge temperature, and everything melds together much better as this one warms up, and it seems to get a little bit sweeter. Also, the bottle of this that I had in September was much better than the bottle some friends and I cracked during the Dark Lord festivities. One more bottle waiting in the cellar. M: Fairly full bodied especially with the wood flavors becoming more prevalent. The alcohol is there, but definitely not overpowering. D: Not as drinkable as it could be, but with the Palo aging, I wasn’t expecting a bastion of drinkability. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 10-01-2009
3.5 22oz bottle-thanks jtclockwork for sharing-pours a light brown head and black color. Aroma is earthy, dark malt-chocolate/roasty, yeast. Taste is earthy hops, dark malt/oat-chocolate/roasty/licorice/ashy, yeast. Not my style but nice.
2.7 Thanks DC crew! nut brown, thin beige ring. Nose and flavor of cocoa, sugar, light oxdation and stinging alcohol. A bit sticky, coating. Super sweet, sugary, hard to drink my sample. Not interested in having again.
3.8 Dark tan color, poured from a 22oz bomber. Caramel malts, sweet fruit, leather. Low carbonation, slightly woody finish.
3.4 22oz bottle. Small off-white head with clear cola-brown bottle. Aroma is moderately sweet, roast/coffee, some milk chocolate, smoke. Taste is moderately sweet, milk chocolate, roast, some cherry, light sour. Medium-full body, lightly sticky.
3.8 Bottle shared with jcwattsrugger. Black with tan head. Nose and taste of clove, tobacco, earth, alcohol, molasses and chocolate.
2.9 22oz bottle looks like a porter. Silky smooth in the mouth. Sweet aroma, lightly malty. Sweet, malty, milk chocolate flavor. Kinda bleh.
3.3 Bottle, shared thanks to Dmac. Pours out a well carbonated slightly murky cola color with tiny swirls of a head. Aroma is of some light caramel, toffee and some earth. Taste is of some toffee, caramel, light earth and a slightly detectable touch of some citrus hops. Alcohol is very well hidden, and body is a bit thinner than expected for a 10%abv ASA. Alcohol only becomes slightly apparent in the tail end of the finish. Found myself looking for more.
3.6 Bomber at DC local tasting. Dark brown color, tan head. Aroma of chocolate syrup and balsamic vinegar. Taste is similar. Interesting.
3.3 22 oz bomber via trade. Poured a very cola looking deep brown with lots of clinging carbonation on the bottom of my Sam Adams snifter and a small wift of light beige head. Aroma of Tootsie Rolls, grass, earth and citrus. Body has no hint of the 10% ABV, if that is even right, fuller and slightly foamy. Flavor of old wet bread, old chocolate, earth, cola and soy. Uhm....not bad but sort of a let down.
3.8 Bought this bottle on a trip to the Three Floyds Brewpub last year with adrian910ss. Finally cracked it open. Pours a dark Coca Cola brown with a thin, quickly disipating tan head. Pleasant aroma of roasted malt, tootsie rolls, caramel, and vanilla. The flavour is similar to the aroma with wood notes, chocolate. and a bit of coffee flavour also detected. Not one of FFF best but it’s worth a try if you haven’t had it.
3.8 Bottle tasting at work. An enjoyable american brown... though I’m a bit hesitent to call it a strong, despite it’s 10% abv. Poured a deep mahogany brown that bordered on opaque. Thin, creamy head without much lacing. Aroma really shines through here, dark fruits, full bodied malts follow into a roasted coffee backdrop. Taste and palate are sweet, creamy, and slightly bitter on the finish. Glad I got ahold of some... would make a great winter night brew.
3.3 Bottle with thanks to coyotehunter for sharing. Pours a Leathery brown with light aromas of toffee and nuts. Flavor is mild, unintersting and similar to the nose.
3.5 Bomber poured a clear reddish brown with a lingering rinmg of tan foam. Aromas of cocoa nibs, wod, vanilla and carmel. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of milk chocolate, carmel, vanilla and light wood with a smooth dry lingering chocolate finish.
3.7 Bottle. Dark cola pour with a quickly dissipating head. Aroma of wood and wine. Medium mouthfeel with some carbonation. Taste is excellent - caramel, wine, grape, apricot.
3.5 22 oz bomber shared with Tim in 2009. Pours a dark cola with a medium sized light beige head. Aroma of dark fruit, malt and prunes. Taste of prunes, light molasses, malt and earth.
3.5 The aroma has caramel, dark fruit, wood, and floral hops. The flavor is similar, with a hoppy, caramel chacter, but the ever-present Dogfish wine flavors are there. Overall very good, but would’ve expected a little better.
3.8 thick nearly opaque brown pour with an extra fizzy and fast fading soda-like head. notes of caramel and vanilla throughout, lots of woody notes from the palo santo, but a bit overly sweet after a lil while. a touch more dry bitterness would balance this beer out nicely. pretty good for about 6oz or so, but don’t think i can finish this entire bottle. excited to try the ba version and see how it compares!
4.0 Appearance: Pours a dark brown with a tan head that subsides to a pin stripe. Aroma: Roasted malt, caramel, burnt caramel and booze. Taste: Burnt roast, wood, dark chocolate and spicy hops. Mouthfeel: Thin and slick. Overall: Really good. I thought this was going to be much sweeter, with no reason to backup my hunch. I was surprised at how great and complex this beer turned out to be.
