Three Floyds Dreadnaught Imperial IPA

Three Floyds Dreadnaught Imperial IPA

A hophead’s dream beer. This Imperial India Pale Ale has an opening salvo of mango, peach and citrus hop aromas that sit atop a pronounced caramel malt backbone. Although Dreadnaught is a strong and intensely hoppy ale, its complex flavors is both smooth and memorable.

3.9 Bottle, 650 ml, courtesy of and shared with Iphonephan. Darkish orange with medium white head. Malty, some caramel, citrus, pine, ripe fruit, sweet with medium bitterness.
4.1 Tried on draft. Hoppy but not bitter. Strong double IPA. Clean taste. Not very citrusy.…
4.0 Deep golden appearance with a lacy white head. Aroma of resinous hops, fresh pine, mild citrus and light toasted malt. Similar flavor, resinous, piney and zesty with moderate bitterness and a light grainy sweetness. Medium to full body with a smooth finish. Nice.
4.3 Copper with a white head. Aroma is citrus, pine, resin, black tea and peach. Taste is medium sweet and heavy bitter. Palate is medium body, sticky with average carbonation.
3.9 Found in bottle at binnys in Chicago. Just a dang solid beer with a healthy and well put together hopped beer. It is not just hopped for hops sake as a combination of flavors appears. One of my favorites and certainly a great winter hop forward beer.
4.3 Draft chalice, yellow with sticky head, a tropical citrus aroma and juicy flavor. Full bodied, bitter but not harsh. Some pine thrown in too. This is a DIPA done right, excellent.
3.9 Bottle into tulip. Citrusy and piney. Very sticky and some dankness. Resinous type DIPA.
4.3 The description was spot on for the aroma. Mango, peach, citrus but I would add that there is also a hint of pine. Hazy orange color with a fluffy off white head. Hoppy but not bitter, strong malt backbone but not overly sweet. The balance is incredible. Palate is bubbly enough but still slick and dense. Just excellent.
4.2 Out of bottle, probably a bit overdue to consume. Much of the hop aroma has dissipated but still a very solid brew. Citrus rind allupinit.
4.0 Very well balanced IPA. Worthy of it's position! Heavy hops and floral notes. Pithy zest lingers on after sipping. Great Summertime beverage.
4.2 From Nov 2007 I got this bottle in a trade with autumnaldave. Thanks Dave! This pours from 22oz bottle a clear medium gold with a small and fast shrinking head of foam. There's some spotty lacing that hugs the side of my glass. The smell is huge on the hops with grapefruit and some floral notes and I can just smell a bit of malt hiding in the background. The taste on first sip....wow, it sure fooled me. Yeah, the hops are what I first noticed and they're powerful and tasty with grapefruit and some pine but the malt holds its own here. Wonderful caramel malty goodness that gives the overall tasting experience a so darn balanced flavour that it leaves me shaking my head. It finishes slightly bitter but the aftertaste leaves a nice malty taste that lingers on for quite some time. And...where the heck is the alcohol?? It's not noticeable in the taste at all and there's just the slightest bit of warming after the swallow. Well done! It has a medium bordering on full mouthfeel and the carbonation is lightly done. What a sipper! I'm pretty sure that this is the best example of the style I've ever tasted. I've had samples of Dreadnaught at the last couple of GABFs that I attended and thought it was something special. This bottle proves that I was right. Thanks mucho again, Dave, for a most enjoyable drinking experience! Bottom line: If you like your DIPAs to bring both the hops and the malt to the table, this one is for you! It's an amazing brew!!
3.6 July 2017 - Bottle shared at Leighton’s. Many thanks to LKS for sourcing/muling and to the team. As ’Three Floyds Dreadnaught Imperial IPA’. My 400th DIPA rating. Almost opaque orange, translucent, foamy off-white head. Aroma is resinous, some sherbet and fruit bonbons. Body is smooth with soft carbonation. Taste is resinous, lots of rich sugary malt, orange zest, spicy finish with a light bitterness. Definitely an old school DIPA. Tasty stuff, but is enjoying an inflated status on the site by virtue of being a trailblazer. (7-4-6-4-15=3.6)
4.4 Bomber sized bottle acquired at the brewery and consumed with dubtully. Beautiful orange almost copper color with a slightly off white head. Aroma is highly hop resin with pine qualities. Nice grapefruit citrus elements as well. Taste is an extremely well balanced effort with an upfront citrus rind bitterness and brightness leading into a big malty backbone of caramel and sweetness. Really hard to find a flaw. Mouthfeel is oily and really well executed. Alcohol present without overwhelming. Ends primarily with malty characteristics. Definitely worth seeking out.
3.6 01.05.2014, tap @ Mikkeller Bar: Nice creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly neutral, leafs, citrus peel, hops, worth, pine needles, caramel malts. Taste is dry piny, leafs, pine needles, moss, soap, hops, grass, bark, soil, dried fruits, sugar, alcohol. Longlasting bitterness, dry mouthfeel. Nice enough.
4.1 Great double IPA. Great balance between hops and malt. Initial taste packs a punch, but the finish is smooth.
4.0 Bottle shared at Hackney heights. Thanks to Leighton for collecting this whale. Pours gazed orange gold with a thin white head. Aroma is mandarin orange, caramel, toffee, pith. Taste is a proper old stool IPA. Taste is orange, caramel, candied peel and grain. Nice stuff
4.3 Tap at brewery in Munster during glbtq. Dark gold with small white head. Smells of pine and resin. Taste is rich, full of bitterness, tropical fruit elements. Powerful finish. Excellent.
4.3 Served on tap at three floyds. Slight haze golden color with a white head. Tropical fruit hops aroma. Very smooth for an imperial. Mango bitter citrus malt. Nice balance.
4.5 Mango. Citrus. Pine. Orange Amber with a thick foamy white head. Slow fade. Thick lacing. Chunks of foam floating on the surface. Big fruit. A hint of candy sweet. Thick chewy mouthfeel. Resin. Bitter finish with the faintest hint of booze.
4.4 amber color; citrusy hop aroma; intensely hoppy, but still quite drinkable; bitter, citrusy hop flavor; fairly well balanced and smooth for such a hop monster
4.2 Bottle into a wineglass showing moderately filtered caramel brown with a finger of quickly dissipating clean white foam. The nose shows moderately intense notes of mango, peach, and light tropical fruit (pineapple, kiwi) on a strong caramel malt backbone. Exactly as the description. The palate is light to medium bodied and well carbonated Moderately intense flavors of mango, peach, and pineapple with hints of kiwi with a strong yet restrained bitterness followed by another resurgence of fresh fruit on the palate. Alcoholic and hoppy zest all around the palate but still very drinkable.
4.1 Tap at cbc16. Golden color and white head. Aroma has tropical fruits, some caramel and malty sweetness in it. Tropical fruits like mango and pineapple, some malty sweetness. Nicely bitter fruity end.
4.2 Pra encerrar a noite. 3Floyds Dreadnaught IPA. Ótima west coast, lembra muito centennial na lupulagem. Ótima! 4/5
4.9 Floral heavy headed hops. Has hints of a triple IPA in its finish. Reminds me of Hop Stoopid with a bigger price tag but also a freshness that sets it apart. Super complex palate which can be hard at 100 IBU but totally pulled off. This is as good as hoppy bears get. Reminds me of Pliney but with less citrus and more mango/tobacco hints. Bottle from Lous on Hobson outside Naperville.
4.2 Appearance: Deep orange body. Hazy looking with a 1 finger head (more foam/lacing when i pour in my wife’s glass) and very active carbonation. Smell: Citrus fruit, more specifically fresh & ripe mango. Good piney hop smell but not overpowering the other aromas. Very good. Taste: I’m hit with the fresh mango again and i literally get a mental image of eating a mango. A slightly sweet fruit taste with some peach fuzz as well. Some discreet pine and my wife says it has a peppery feel to it. The taste definitely more than backs up the smell. Mouthfeel: Good balance between malt and hops but tends more to the malty side. Almost no bitter hops which disappointed me a little but nonetheless i can’t argue that this is a greatly constructed brew. Very smooth and feels a little juicy. Bitterness opens up a little as it warms.
4.1 Had to pick one of these 22oz at a local beer store to see what the hype was about. I can see this being made to compete in beer competitions. Pours a medium to light amber with rich orange hues with a slightly cloudy appearance. The head comes out strong and thick holding its own for about a minute then slowly melting. The hop aromas are very strong and complex. I get pine, grapefruit, pineapple, caramel, juicyfruit, grapefruit (sooo nice!). The flavors here were a little bit of a sad sad dissapointment for me. I have had sooooo many ipas and dipas and I find that most do not get much higher than an 8 for flavor. This one fails to make it any higher. I don’t know if its the big caramel backbone or possibly that it has aged past its prime but man, I could or should be even better! Ok so theres the medium pine/citrus/apricot/ slight mango and high caramel backbone with just a ting of alcohol in the finish. I’m hoping I just got an older bottle of some kind. Medium sweet medium to high bitter finish. I’ve made dipas that taste almost the same as this one and most of my beers are on the level of decent. The label say’s memorable but I may forget...Still though, its on a level that flirts with greatness.......
4.4 Everytime I drive to Chicago I load up on the Imperial IPA. A bold original IPA flavour that is often diluted with many new IPAs being brewed.
4.3 Tap at J’s. Pours a clear gold with a finger of foam that lingers. Whoa! Super fresh on tap. Tons of ruby red grapefruit with light dank notes and tangerine aromas. Clean and crisp on the palate with more citrus and ruby red grapefruit. Light bitterness and good lingering juicy fruit and dank. This was quite a head of its time. Fantastic.
4.2 Lots of mango, citrus, then caramel malt followed by quick bitter flavor. A touch alcohol warming at the end. Very good.
4.2 Backlog, ocena przepisana z untappd, w ramach uzupełniania profilu na ratebeer. Znakomity smak chmielowy, dużo słodkich, kandyzowanych owoców.
