Tilquin Oude Gueuze à l'Ancienne

Tilquin Oude Gueuze à l'Ancienne

Blend of 1-2-3 year old lambic from various producers. Typically: 50% 1-year old lambic, 30% 2-year old lambic, and 20% 3-year old lambic.

ABV varies (has been 6.4% for example).

Draft version is separate entry since it is totally different blend: it contains Meerts (low ABV lambic), 1 and 2 year old lambics (no 3 year old lambic).

2019-2020 description for example:

"The Gueuze Tilquin à l’ancienne (7.0% alc / vol) is a spontaneous fermentation beer obtained from the blending of 1, 2 and 3 years old lambics. Unfiltered and unpasteurized, it is re-fermented in the bottle for a minimum period of 6 months. The lambics used were fermented and matured in our own oak barrels at the blendery. They are made from worts brewed by Boon, Lindemans, Girardin and Cantillon.

The taste is tart and dry but has a certain roundness that makes this Gueuze à l’ancienne particularly accessible for non-experts. It will also delight fans of the genre for its sweet complexity. It also has a slight dry bitterness because of the youth of the oak barrels used, as they still release some tannins. It has a fresh lemony nose."

4.0 Pours tangerine orange with a thin quickly dissipated white head. Green apple sweetness, sour mash and slight vinegar taste. Very well balanced. Excellent lambic.
3.9 750mL bottle pours a clear orange with a medium white head. Sweet aroma with lemon, Brett, fruity, honey, light horse blanket. Taste of lemon, hay, white pepper, sour and tart, with light yogurt on the finish. Nice!
4.0 Pours a ruddy amber from a bottle. Big brett aroma, funky and tart lemon juice. Similar flavor. Very good beer.
4.1 corked bottle. Pours a dark yellow color with a small white head that soon recedes to a ring around the glass and a fine film on the top. The aroma is a bit perfumy with some lavender, lemons, roses, brett and thyme. The taste is complex with sour citrus, herbs, oakiness and touch of garbage pail. The palate is full and viscous. Finishes long with lingering sour oak. Overall--Decent
4.1 Funky fruit aroma in a crystal golden amber pour. Spectacularly complex and subtle sour flavour profile that epitomises the style. Thankful to be able to enjoy in the antipodes (especially in these Chinese Flu times).
4.3 Vintage 2019/2020. Orange color, with a nice big white head, slowly disappearing. Aroma is citrus, sour apples, leather, sulphuric. Very lemony taste, sour. Extremely refreshing, dry and bitter finish. Beautiful geuze.
3.1 Looks: orange, hazy, white head. Aroma: malt, apple, strawberries, raspberries, vinegar. Taste: bitter sour. Pearly.
4.2 Appearance: light amber colour, clear, very little yeast deposit on the bottom of the flask, no froath, well carbonised Flavour: white wine, wood cask, wild yeast , goat cheese, sweat, stabbles, etc., Taste: sour, moderate bitterness, wild yeast
3.7 12.7 oz corked bottle. Pours a pretty honey color with a dense white head which dissipates. Big sour lambic smells of vinegar and yeast. Nice toothy sour apple and wine vinegar flavors with a hint of barnyard and a wonderful tangy finish. Good gueuze.
4.1 375 ml bottle. Pours unclear dark honey golden, no head. Green apples, barnyard, funk, brett, wild honey, grapefruit and lemon zest, oak barrels. Dry acidic sourness, slightly sweet. Full bodied, oily texture, low to soft carbonated, dry sour finish. Very complex, very balanced, nice!
3.4 Little head, color is hazy and golden orange. Disappointingly little carbonation. Aromas of apple, citrus and minerality, almost to the point of shellfish? Somehow it reminds me of the smell of a freshly shucked oyster. Flavors of apple, citrus, mild hops. Aftertaste is pleasantly dry. Its characteristics are typical of these kinds of lambics: acidic, tart, medium bodied and mild fruitiness. This is one of the more well-balanced lambics that I have tried, the acidity is just right. A bit bland though, no flavors stand out distinctly. Maybe I’m too experienced when it comes to lambics, but I feel it is a bit too mild? Lacks a bit of personality. It would pair nicely with some oysters or other seafood I imagine, also would work as a starter. Though I do prefer my beer with more bubble.
4.3 Bottle at Las Buenas Pulgas, served in a teku glass. Hazy orange colour, medium head with short retention, normal lacing. Aroma of barnyard, bretts, citrics, apples, and some pepper. Medium body, viscous texture, good carbonation. Tart finish. Taste is tart, citrics, fruits, flowers some pepper and fruit stalk. Great.
4.2 (750 mL, 7.0% ABV, 2019-2020 version) Slightly hazy orange amber body with a large white head. Strong yeast aroma, a bit funky, bread, tart fruit (lemon, apple, slight cherry). Medium bodied, very bubbly, smooth and round mouthfeel. Flavor is moderately tart with apple, lemon; long, dry finish.
4.3 Little white foam. Powerful and round mouthfeel and fresh beer. Barnyard, funky smells, fruit, a little volatile acid/ velpon, round, combination of mild and harder acids, some structure, nicely integrated flavours, good balance. Bottle fermented. More powerful, and more barnyard smells than 3 fonteinen. 3 fonteinen is a bit more delicate. Perceived acidity is the same. 750ml
3.7 Part of a sour beer tasting and K&L Wines in Redwood City. What a great lineup for the night of eight legendary sours. Scores were recorded during the tasting but not detailed notes.
4.4 2019 bottle. Aroma of sour apple, basement funk, tart citrus and vinegar. Wood barrel, medium tartness, citrus, long woody earthy funky finish. Classic gueuze, smooth n clean. Somehow this one slipped under the radar but it's a goodie.
4.2 Slightly hazy peach-gold pour with a tiny white head. Aroma of horse blanket, green wood, raw oak, tart berries, hay, cereal and dried floral notes. The flavor is truly something I have never quite experienced, there's some weird stuff going on, it's really hard to pin down, moderate acidity, lots of floral notes (fruity and tart), some earthy funk, green wood white mulberries, deep dusty cereal grain, hay, horse blanket, pale tobacco... It's really interesting and not all good and there's something there that I have no idea how to describe, like some sort of dull fruity acidic thing. This might be poisoned, I really don't know, but I wish I had more and I wish I'd known how much I'd like it before I opened it with a pretty dull palate.
4.4 A 375ml corked and caged bottle, with a neck label of 2017-2018, and a best before date of 22nd November 2027. Poured into a 3 Fonteinen gueuze glass. It was a slightly hazy golden orange colour with a thin white head that dissipated quickly but settled to a ring around the glass, while leaving only sparse lacing. Aromas of lemon zest, green apple, straw, hay, barnyard, funk. Tastes lightly sour, tart, grapefruit, green apple, grape, lemon, funky, and oak. Dry, medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall one of my favourite regular Gueuze’s in my opinion. Just great balanced aroma and flavours.
4.0 How: Bottle, 2013/2014 vintage. Where: Systembolaget. Appearance: Hazy dark golden colour with a small white head. Aroma: Acidic, funk, tart, fruit, citric, stable, vinous. Body: Medium body, flat carbonation. Flavour: Acidic, tart, fruit, citric, acidic, vinous.
3.4 Old note, for counting purpose : Drinked in a tasting glass, from the fridge. Orange coloured beer, fuzzy head. Nice acid sour taste. Need to try it again !
4.5 Bottle, by way of a trade, ages ago. Mostly clear, pale copper colour. Ring of dense white foam. One of those that’s hard to describe properly. Leather. Vinegar. Sherry. Wisp of coconut, weirdly. Wisp of chocolate. This is mad. Taste is tart and semi bitter. Clean and bright on the palate. Minimal acidity. Fine carbonation. Finish has lingering leathery shizzleness. Fantastic.
2.6 10/20 extreme taste of the forest - not exactly pleasant. lambic just not my thing
3.8 Pours with a hazy light gold body and a sparse white head. Strong lemony sour aroma and taste with plenty of barnyard funk. Light bodied.
4.3 Bottle: Poured a dark golden with a white head, dissipated fast into the beer leaving whispers. Aroma is funky, barnyard, fruity, woodsy, vinous. Taste is tart funky fruit, acidic, vinous, burns as it goes down in a good way.
3.9 Bottle from Pivný raj Lovely lambic. Funky, brett, barnyard, sourness is just at the right level. Nice one
4.6 Many Thanks for this Oude Gueuze To tderoeck. Vintage 2011 / Bottlet on 2013. Half champagne bottle. Alez odjazdowo czaderski Lambic. Mocno metny barwy ciemno zlotej do jasnego bursztynu, spora piana, ale poczatkowo, szybko sie redukuje niemal do zera. Pachnie stajnia, skorzanym starym fotelem, damska torebka. W smaku cala paleta docnan od pieczonych czy smazonych jablek, morele pigwowa kwasnosc, gruszka gotowana, tarta alzacka, nieco szarlotki z antonowek, wytrawnosc, tanicznosc, dzikosc i pelno nud debowych, Beczka dala tu popalic, Lambic ten ma naprawde sporo ciala, a posmak kwasno owocowy jest bardzo dlugi, niczym squirting Adranny Checkin. Nic tylko wachac, smakowac i popijac dobra jagniecine.
3.8 Bottle, 37,5 cl @summerhouse. Pours a unclear golden with a short lasting white head. Aroma is a little soapy or like hand creme or perfume. Taste is tart with green apples, some fruity sweetness and a bitterness from sea buckthorn. Some vinegar sharpness in the finish. Interesting beer. Well done.
3.8 Copenhagen 27/6 2020. 75 cl corked bottle from Kviickly, Allerød. Simple dark blue label stating the name of the beer and the small light blue tree which is Tilquin's logo. The version I am drinking a 2017-18 version with an ABV of 7,0. Pours unclear, golden yellow with a medium-sized white head. Fairly stable. Settles as thin laer of foam just covering the surface of the beer. No lacing. Aroma is intense and nicely balanced between af fruity sweetness and an austere, dry sourness. Green apples, citrus and unripe gooseberries. Vinegar sharpness. Light carbonation. Thin, oily, slightly greasy, almost flat texture. Flavor is intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a strong, tart, sourness. Aftertaste is austere, acerbic and sour. Finish is bone-dry. As a Lambic should be. Austere, dry and sour.
