To Øl Black Maria

Black Maria is an American inspired Black IPA. It is black as an stout and hoppy as an IPA. The beer has been brewed with a good amount of highly roasted Carafa Malts, but with a relatively low amount of caramel and chocolate malts. This way we get the burned bitter and delicate chocolate notes in the beers, that goes well with the bitter and fruity aromas of the hops. The lack of caramel and chocolate results in less residual sweetness that you normally pick up from an Stout. For the hops we wanted some hops that could stand up against the Carafa malts. Therefore we used a mix of Columbus, Centennial, Galaxy and Cascade for the hop profile.

3.7 I was craving something hoppy tonight and upon opening my fridge, I saw a Warsteiner and a Black Maria. I wasn't planning on having a big bottle tonight, but needs must. The aroma hides the hops well, with caramel, burnt malts, rum, and tar masking most of the only IPA note of pine tar. Taste is hoppy, but mostly dark chocolate, burnt malt and caramel. I'd peg this more of a hoppy impy stout than a black IPA, but it still hit the spot.
3.8 750ml capped bottle pours black in color with a finger and a half of light brown head that leaves some decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is pine and citrus with some chocolate and light roasted grains. Taste is a chocolate malty sweetness with a light roasted grain, citrus and pine hop bitterness. Medium to full bodied with abundant carbonation. Overall, a very well crafted brew that is hoppy enough and not overpowered by the roasted grains. Recommended.
4.1 Shared with Parksy and Smitty at game night. Full bodied dark roast, licorice and red fruits, balanced and delicious.
3.9 Uma black ipa bem tradicional, creme sem muita densidade, aroma frutado, de ameixa, sabor complexo, tostado, com retrogosto bem amargo. Muito bem balanceada.
3.8 Dark brown/black color; Medium creamy body; Aroma of toasted malt, cocoa/chocolate, coffee, & some citrus hops; Flavor of roasted/ashy malt, coffee/espresso, chocolate, pine hops, and some fruit/citrus; Finish is slightly bitter; Pretty decent.
3.4 Bottle @ Floris’ Leaving Party. Pours a pitch black beer with a small brownish head on top. Aroma of roast and coffee with a faint hint of citrussy hops. Flavor is metallic, highly carbonated and little left of the hops or roasty touches. A faint roasty character can be noted in the finish, alongside some chocolate. Decent at best.
3.5 7 3 7 3 15 Bottle shared for Floris’s Leaving Beers at Gekke Geit. Dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of malt, caramel, lightly roasty, lactose, toffee and light green hop notes. Flavour is light heavy sweet and above moderate bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.
3.6 Sampled from bottle at Floris’s leaving tasting. Black with tan head. Sweet deep roasted malts, rust, licorice, lactose. Moderate sweet and strong bitter. Medium body and soft carbonation.
4.0 Jet black with thick, dense tan head that is medium-lived. Nose is roasted malts, walnuts, moist grass and a bit hoppy in the background. Aroma starts mildly bitter, with predominant notes of roasted malts and coffee grounds and ends hoppy and bready. Alcohol is very well hidden. Very creamy mouthfeel, medium bodied, low carbonation. Very good.
3.8 Black. The aroma is mostly roasted malts. It begins with a roasted, malty and moderately sweet taste, with spicy hops and light citrus notes, and ends with heavy bitter hops and some ash. Full body, and prickly carbonation. Overall, a very nice black IPA. Like drinking a stout and an IPA at the same time.
3.6 330ml bottle from Brewery Creek with George and Ilya. Pours an almost black with a tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, hops, roasted onion (wtf?!). Taste is roasted malt, hoppy bitter (good that without onion).
3.1 Dark beige creamy head stayed well on a near black, thick, still body. Nutty, iron aroma with chocolate & faint hints of citrus. Medium body. Creamy, sharp, tingly - this has a bit of a bite to it. To the fore there’s malt, chocolate, nutty & cream. This quickly dissipates over the tongue to very tangy back of bitter citrus, grapefruit, pine & an overall general tangy aft. Complex tasting beer.
3.8 Black 22oz pour. Tan head. Malty and bitter, chocolate and maybe cofffee. Hoppy. Pretty good
2.3 Bottle Appearance: black, small head Aroma: mainly cough syrup, some dart notes and finally very weak aroma of hops in the background Taste: better then the aroma, however one would want much more. Some dark notes, resin, leaves very unpleasant aftertaste. It wasn’t something that I expected. Something went wrong but I don’t know whom to blame, the brewery or the shop for inappropriate storing of the beer.
2.5 W aromacie syrop na kaszel, ciemne słody i lekka nuta żywicy. W smaku przyjemnie gładkie, w miarę pijalne gdyby nie ten potworny syrop na kaszel. Szkoda, bo piwo miało jeszcze rok przydatnosci.
3.5 Very dark, almost pitch black, but still a bit brownish, thick beige head. Hoppy, floral, tropical fruit aroma. Quite straightforward bitter taste with roasted tones and long lasting bitter finish. Good, but a bit too simple
4.6 Swietne, czarujace czarne piwo, geste syropowate, ciemno brazowa piana trwala i spora. Zapach orzechow wloskich i trufli francuskich. Smak lekko slodkawy lukrecja gorzka czekolada, potem robi sie chmielnie i lekko zywicznie, wspaniala roznorodnosc na zakonczenie palone slody i wanilia, o dziwo w skladzie laktoza ale poza poczatkowa slodkoscia potem wogole jej nie czuc. Glownie dominuje czekolada i chmiele. Kapitalnie zlozone i tresciwe piwo, a do tego alkohol porzadnie ukryty.
3.8 Bottle.Black colour with medium beige head.Aroma is roasted and malty with nice flavors of nuts and chocolate, good well balanced and nice full body even hint of vanilla smooth and mild finish.
4.0 W nosie średnio intensywnie, ciemne owoce, żywica, kawa. Barwa czarna, nieprzejrzyste, piękna, beżowa, wysoka piana. W smaku mnóstwo gorzkiej czekolady i kawy, ciemne owoce, żywica, ciemny chleb. Goryczka średnia, palona, alko całkowicie ukrtyty. Bardzo dobre BIPA. Butelka do 19.01.2018
4.3 330ml bottle at old Beer Station, Xiamen on 2 Oct. Pours black with an off white head. Aroma of coffee and burnt malt with vanilla and chocolate. Intense bitter finish.
3.9 Bottle @ home. Aroma of piney and grassy hops, and some roasted malts, notes of coffee. Black colour with tan, thick and lasting head. Taste is moderate+ bitter and light sweet. Medium body, oily feel and bitter finish with some roastiness.
3.7 Bottled. Black colour, mediumsized beigeish brown foamy head, which quite quickly settles into a small firm head, which leaves some lace. Aroma is liquorice, some mild roasted notes as well as some fruity and nectary notes. Flavour is big time fruity and floral with some slight alcohol, liquorice and a nice malty balance to it as well. Quite nicely balanced.
4.4 Bottle @ home Clear dark brown, brown head Licorice, milk chocolate, coffee, hops, toffee, nutty, caramel, complex aroma Roasted bitterness, raw licorice, hint ashy, wood, bitter herbaceus aftertaste, dry, some alcohol warmth, dangerously drinkable
4.2 Bottle. Black color, with a beige and persistent foam. Aroma is intense and fresh hops mixed with roasting notes. Flavor follows the same, with low residual sweetness. High drinkability. Very well balanced Black IPA.
Goryczka średnia do wysokiej, żywiczno palona. Wysycenie średnie, dość pełne, lekko szorstkie i wyklejające w odbiorze. Alkohol lekko rozgrzewa w przełyku. Klasa Black IPA, wyraźnie nachmielone, z wysoką goryczką, ale i z konkretną bazą słodową, palonością i czekoladą, podkreśloną laktozą i płatkami owsianymi. W niczym nie ustępuje Black Malts & Body Salts.
3.8 Bottle. A black coloured pour with a healthy beige head on top which doesn’t last. Roasty, malty, chocolate, coffee aroma. Tastes similar, roasty, malty, bitter chocolate, bitter coffee and quite burnt. Decent black IPA.
4.0 Black with a huge beige head. Heavy mango, tropical fruits, hoppy, sweet, some caramel. Heavy bitter with strong hoppy, tropical fruits, mango, light roasted malt. Good!
4.1 Bottle at Beer O’ Clock, Bucharest. Dark colour with white head. Big on malts and fresh hops. There is caramel involved, medium carbonation and a long, dry bitter taste. Exceptional beer.
3.5 backlog. black with an off whtie head. Somewhat roasty aroma with some hints of spruce and resins. Dry with a long bitter finish. Nice for the style
