3.3 Bottle. Pours black with a thin beige head. Aroma was roasty with chocolate, coffee and citrus. Flavor of chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, caramel and light pine.
3.2 Bottled. Dark brown to amber beer with huge head. Quite unusual is a mixture of berryish and slightly fruity hops, grains and rye with milk chocolate and dark caramel. Malty but dryish taste with slightly acidic toastedness, bready notes and spicy rye. Toasted rye bread, chocolate and with strong, berryish and grapefruity bitterness in the finish. Medium body, slick texture, a bit frothy carbonation.
3.2 Aroma: intense flowers. Appearance: hazy, dark brown, small, beige head. Taste: medium sweet, light bitter. Palate: bitters intensify, flowers and malts. Overall: OK Black IPA, struggles to stand out. Pint at Big Brew, Morristown.
3.7 "A slightly different take on the black iPa style. Black malts, tootsie roll chocolate and spicy rye and hops. Fairly aggressive in both the malt and hop profile. Sweeter than normal in the style, but I dug it."
3.8 Det här var en juste öl och en juste black-ipa, smaken var kraftfull med toner av både härlig malt och fruktig humle. Kroppen var i toppklass men balansen satt inte helt på plats.
4.1 Very dark color. The flavor is dominated by roasted malt, chocolate and caramel. Never drunk a black IPA before but I guess this is a very fine one.
3.7 1st rating August 2014. 355ml bottle. Near black, thin brown head. Citrusy, roasty, coffee, nutty aroma. Flavor has citrus, roasted malt, tobacco, salty notes. Dry finish with cocoa. Tasty black IPA, balanced. -- rated with beerbasher/winphone Tap@ Tommyknocker bar, Helsinki. Wow, I managed to choose the only one I had rated from this brewery as my first at this bat. Anyway, good stuff, near black, thin brown head. Hoppy, roasty, cocoa aroma. Flavor has roastedness, hops, dark chocolate. Pleasant smoothness and body. Bitter finis points the same as from the bottle.
3.4 Appearance: Black color with a nice frothy beige head. Nice lacing. Aroma: Mild citric hoppy, roasted malt, coffee and mild fruity. Palate: Full to medium body. Tad sweet and a fine bitterness. Soft to average carbonation. Taste: Mild citric hoppy, roasted, coffee, chocolate and mild fruity. Overall impression: Tasty ok BIPA. Lacked some more hoppiness and a bit mild fruity. Personal stats: Bottle at The Flying Barrel in Göteborg, Sweden US beer #250
3.6 Pours a dark brown. Aroma is some roasted malts and citrus hops. Taste is sweet with a bitter finish.
3.4 Interesting rye black ipa. Cola color pour. Rye spice and dark roasted malts in the nose. Taste has a coffee presence, but an unexpected bitter kick at the end. Rye wasn't too obvious.
3.6 Bottle. Pours a dark brown with medium frothy beige head that lasts leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is a strong bready malt, raisin, caramel, and pine. Nice bitter hop bite, caramel malt, and nice light bitterness. Very good.
3.5 Kind of a bland pour but has an enticing coffee aroma. The taste is very cofee like w/ some hop kick at the end. Tasty!
3.3 Lacks the bitter taste I expected for a 95 IBU, but this is a pretty good beer. Worth a buy for sure.
3.3 Big roast flavor but lighter than aroma suggests. Pours Coca-Cola brown with light head. Lacing after every sip. Great friendly flavor. Would order again. ---all in good suds.
2.9 12 oz bottle, Kroger Bridge St. Clear, dark red-brown, smaller almost-fizzy head. Aroma predominantly roast and chocolate, backed by coffee, and some floral fruitiness. Flavor is pretty one-dimensional--mostly roast. Not impressed with this, along with most of Tommyknocker’s other stuff.
3.6 Lives up to its name. Lots of roast in the aroma. Good balance albeit on the carmel side. Nice roasty, rye and coffee in the middle and end. Enjoyable sipper.
3.2 bottle. Near black with small head. Lots of roasted malt and rye. Medium hops. There’s a lot going on in a normal black IPA, and in this case, I find that the rye just muddies things up even more. Ok, but far from my favorite.
3.2 Pours very dark brown with two fingers of tan head. Aroma is dark roast with lots of hops and some sweetness. Flavor follows. Light bodied and finishes dry. Decent beer.

3.2 Sampled at Big Brew Beer Festival (Morristown). Poured a dark brown color with a small tan head. Aroma of citrus and roasted malt. Taste of older citrus zest, grapefruit, and roasted malt.
3.7 För att vara en black ipa så lyfter denna öl. Fina toner chocolat o citrushumle toner. Mycket maltsmak o liten beska. En bra black ipa.
3.5 Pen & Paper Log (Feb 2011) Aroma - is full of roast malts, coffee, and big hops. Appearance - the beer is a very dark brown, with a 1/2" of tan head. The head eventually falls. Taste - is a good compliment of hops and dark roast, there are other notes of coffee, some bits of chocolate. Palate - the body is medium to full, the texture sticky, the carbonation average, the finish is medium to long with a bitter finish.
4.3 Pours a dark mahogany color with about half a finger of light brown head. looks and smells appealing during the pour. the aroma is of deep dark roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, very slight dark fruit character. great hop aroma as well. the taste is great on this one, wonderful dark roasted backbone with a well balanced addition of hops. other flavors are chocolate, coffee, dark fruits. overall, i was very pleased with this beer, lots of well balanced flavors that were easy to pick up, and not one flavor overpowered another, great brew!
3.7 Bottle at SlutFest 2011 on 04/23/2011. Clear dark copper body with ruby highlights and a small creamy off white head. Sweet chocolate and floral/citrus hop aroma. Sweet floral and resiny hop flavor with a big malty background. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation.
3.0 Draught at The Rover Black with a beige head. Roasted aroma and flavour with chocolate and liquorice. Light bitterness. Rather sweet flavour.
3.4 Draught at The Rover, Göteborg. Very dark brown beer with a nice lasting beige head. Hoppy roasted chocolate aroma, caramel, cocoa, coffee notes, some caramel. Hoppy chocolate flavor, roasted, notes of raisins, cocoa, tar, coffee, some pine. Decent black IPA.
3.7 Nice dark rich hue. Tall head, but dissipates rather quickly, good lacing remains. Aroma reminds me of chocolate, light but delicious. A little on the hoppy side, normal for an IPA, just not my favorite. good ABV balance.
3.2 FROM NOTES: July 6, ’12 Poured from a 16 ounce bottle into a pint glass. A: Chocolate sweetness with a touch of pungent hops, works well together although somewhat faint. A: A hazy dark dark brown with a thick tan colored head that leaves nice lacing down the glass. T: Heavy on bitter roasted malt as well as some hop spiciness that is piney and earthy. P: A good feel, medium body with a nice smooth peppery carbonation. O: I think this is Tommyknockers best that I’ve had to date. No off flavors and this is pretty tasty. Well balanced.
