3.4Taken from old notes. Sweet smell and a creamy toffee/caramel taste with some bitterness that fades to a clean finish. Hints of the oak are there as well.
3.4Bottle at Papsø’s - Thanks. Cloudy brown - white head. Vanlla, oakey, sweetness, high wooden, raisins, coconut, berries, caramelish, chemical notes.
3.8Bottle at Papsø.
Clear orange-red coloured with a small off-white head.
Sweet aroma of caramel, rye bread, oak and vanilla.
Sweet flavour of caramel, rye bread, oak, vanila, liquorice and rubber.
Fruity finish of oak.
3.412 fl oz bottle. Pours hazy dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is oaky, overriped fruity and almost oxidised. Thick caramelish malty, breadish, bitter, dry and roasted malty. Ends dry and dense caramelish. Bitter and dry malty finish, light alcohol presence.
3.3clear amber, small white head.
malty, fruity yeasty aroma, sort of belgian like fruty.
flavor is syruppy, sweet caramel, malts, bitter caramel, faint bitter herbal.
3.2Bottled. A dark red beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has notes of brett, caramel, malt, and vanilla. The falvor is sweet with notes of caramel, bread, wood, vanilla, and a bit of roasted malt, leading to a dry and slightly tart finish.
3.5Bottled. Amber coloured. Unclear. Dense beige head. aRoma of caramel, spice, fruits, Flavour of oak, vanilla, caramel, spice, fruits. A bit chemical in the profile. Medium bodied. Ends on a oaky and spiced note.
3.1Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of Doodler. Pours an almost clear deep amber with a small and creamy beige head. Sweet oaky aroma. Rich body, sweet caramel aroma, quite some oak - and an unfortunate, strange chemical edge to it. No real bitterness. Not entirely hot. 260412
3.4A really nice dopple. A good caramel , burnt toffee, vanilla and spice flavor with a hint of wood in the finish.
2.4Pours a deep reddish amber.....thick, near chewy, slight banana, oak, and a cloying residual sweetness of unfermentable sugars which is a bit overbearing. Take the FG down a bit more and dry it out some.
2.1Smells uber-sweet with hints of soy sauce and Beggin’ Strips, tastes like you’re sitting in a bag of caramel malt. The oak adds depth to the sweetness, but really what we need is something to tighten up all the cloying sugariness that saturates this bottle. No noticeable alcohol, which is nice, but the watery texture proves too tame. Big mess here, fellas.
3.3Raisiny, fruitbread and soy sauce aroma - dark and rich, without much hops, and some bock tang. Muddy brown, small head, OK label on a standard US longneck bottle. Tastes like wine, raisins, holiday cake. Doesn’t hold carbonation well. Vanilla, malt aftertaste in a silky, medium-heavy body. This was not bad, but it was not quite what I was looking for - it is a decent pairing with beef, and would make a fine marinade. New Leaf Market.
2.1Smell is not that great, more funk than anything. Tastes like wood chips, not much more. Not a very good beer, nothing else to say
4.5Taste wonderful. Low carbonation, acid, sugar, oak. Apples and raisins. No hop aroma just fruit.
3.7Deep dark ruby, copper and amber tinted body with a thin, fast-dying tan head, a very nice look, especially when held up to a light. Aroma of super strong oak scents with more wood in the nose than anything else, but some raisins, concord grapes, figs and a bit of malt come through. Full, perhaps Medium-bodied; Effervescent mouthful at first with a big bite of oak at first, then fades to a lighter spiciness, some pungent fruits, a touch of alcohol and a dry, woodsy and herbal flavour near the end. Aftertaste shows some complexity, but largely taken over by the oak and pitted fruits. Overall, a nice interesting beer with some good flavours and some rather pungent and strong tastes. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 20-July-2011 sampled at home in Washington on 07-October-2011.
4.0Aroma - Malty, smells like a barley wine ale
Appearance - Cloudy medium brown, light head.
Taste - light sweetness, not quite as malty as the nose would indicate
Palate - Smooth, medium body, light carbonation; long finish
Overall - Smoother than the standard butt-head.
2.5From the bottle. It pours reddish amber with a disappearing off white head. The aroma is very interesting with big time oakiness, banana, bread, and some fruit basket. The flavor is very harsh with oak and rubbing alcohol. Some overipe fruit, but that almost makes things worse. The solventy flavor and over the top oak, made this almost undrinkable. Too bad, it seemed promising.
3.6Bottle. Murky copper pour with a short foamy tan head. Aroma is oak, caramel and dark fruit(raisins mostly). Taste is sweet malt, caramel, oak, light vanilla, raisins and candyish notes. Body is medium with a creamy carbonation and a soft boozy note. Ends with more caramel, big malt, oak, vanilla, and more dark fruit. Some light cake notes are there as well.
2.6Murky brown with thin white head. The nose is syrupy sweet malt and toasted oak. Medium bodied. The flavor is over sweet...all malt with no balance. Didn’t make it through half a glass before it ended up down the drain.
2.9Tallahassee, Fl - New Leaf Market - 12 oz bottle. Pours a somewhat lifeless murky light brown/dark orange with a slight off-white head. Aroma is sweet with some sweet smoked maple sausage accents and a hint of molasses. Flavor is way over on the sweet side of the spectrum. Pick up some molasses, raisins, that same maple syrup and sausage combo I found in the aroma. Not quite cloying, but a bomber of this would be hard to take, Mouthfeel is sufficiently thick. Better to save this for the winter.
3.712 oz bottle. Pours a deep rusty orange brown color with a small beige-tan head. Aroma of vanilla, toasted oak chips and caramel. Taste of oak chips, vanilla, caramel and toffee.
3.7Nose is pretty flat, pours a bit cloudy. Opens up with warmth and is floral and wood. Full mouthfeel with good balance. A bit of wood resin taste-would probably benefit with some bottle aging to integrate this. Alcohol is pretty well integrated if a tad hot. Don’t think I could do more than one at a go, but nice beer to take your time with.
4.0The aroma reveals an extreme malt character. Notes of maple syrup with sour overtones. Pours a dark reddish brown with a tan head. Smooth carbination and thick mouthfeel. The oak really comes through on this one. Hints of vanilla and coconut with a constant oak backbone. Tastes higher in alcohol than it really is which is interesting.
3.6Tap at the brewery. Dark red/brown appearance. Sweet amber malty Bock aroma with a fairly significant oak smell. Flavor is a sweet malty body with a good but not overpowering oak flavor. I think they did a great job with their oak aging on this beer. The beer is still a little syrupy in my opinion.
3.8Pours a murky orange brown color with no head. Thick body with aroma of nuts, caramel, wood, and dark fruit. Brown sugar, caramel malts, and nuts make up most of the flavor with hints of wood and alcohol. Warms on the way down.
3.6Bottle from Supermarket Liquors in Fort Collins, CO. Pours very dark and hazy amber with a transient beige head. Guessing this is oak chip rather than used barrel. Aroma is raw oak and dark fruit. Full bodied with creamy/frothy carbonation. Flavor is brown sugar, dark fruit and wood/oak. Nice balance of malt by oak. Drinks nicely.
3.9Pours a rich cola brown with a khaki bubbly head. Smell is nutty, woody, yeasty, maybe some whisky or bourbon in there as well. Love, love, love the taste of this bad boy! Reminds me of my dear home state of Texas with the Pecan notes that I noticed first. Other tastes of caramell, vanilla, and wood soon followed. Superbly malted yet subtly balanced with enough hop bite at the end to round out the whole experience. Slick and creamy mouthfeel with a medium body and very finely carbonated. A wonderful, underrated beer. Well done, Tommyknocker! (NOTE: Had this 4 years later...not very good. Too much of a soil note. Not enjoyable to drink. But I’ll keep my old rating. It really shook me then, and it would be a shame to knock it down several pegs due to either change of oak source, bad brewer, or some other unfair reason)
3.7Tasted at the 2010 Craft Lager Festival in Manitou Springs. Not much I can add with my sparse notes, but I described as "dark copper caramel/oak/whiskey bomb" in both smell and taste. Taste also had some candied leathery fruit notes, maybe figs? Dang good, definitely strong, and I think this is the first oak-aged bock I’ve ever had.
3.2Dark copper brown pour with a fizzy but lasting head. Aroma is smoke and oak, with a bit of vanilla from the oak. Nice flavor of sweet caramel, boozy reminiscent of a nice bourbon..
3.6Pours a amber color with a white head. Big wood/oak aroma, but you don’t taste it till the finish. Starts out with a nice vanilla taste and then finishes with a big oak taste. Would probably not be the most drinkable beer, but if you are just having one this should be the one.
