4.1 22 ounce bottle from Badger Spirits in Beloit, WI, served a little above fridge temp in a Guinness glass, like you give a fuck. A huge frothy cream head forms above the hazy pale gold body, taking forever to diminish and leaving chunky lacing...fairly sharp citric nose, mostly tart/underripe orange, also offers some fun funkiness, a faint hint of the outhouse mixed with deeply rotting humus and mildew, it’s better than it’s sounds trust me...body is indeed lemony and fairly tart all the way through, with a nice even bitterness that grows only very slightly towards the finish, a light breadiness towards the end and a touch of pepper...juicy, medium-bodied, perhaps a little lighter than most TG beers and a bit easier to quaff, tingly moderately strong carbonation. These guys can do no wrong so far with hoppy beers from what I’ve had and this is no exception. I just wish I could have some of them again more easily!
3.6 Surprisingly, this is my first Toppling Goliath. I have only Mr. Eben Stine to thank for that. It’s a lightly toned royal yellow substance with which a cream-white, leggy-ensuing, dappled foaminess perches permanently atop. Yet another beer of the infamously undetectable aroma variety - oh joy! Maybe clementine zest. Maybe dandelions. Maybe cotton balls. Wildflower honey when left to warm for sure; crushed coriander more prevalent as time went on just as well. No, there’s definitely a faint citrus character - it shines while sedentary for longer than 5 minutes in the glass. Conceivably it has grass trimmings smelled after the fifteen minute mark. But at this point, I really feel like I’m pushing it. Not overly aromatic. Got it. I’ll move on. Clementine zest certainly more apparent on the flavor. Sourdough was a new sensation, but I discovered it lurking in the mid-palate candidly alongside white clay, rice, and masking tape. Gets oddly seaweed-y at its finish. Gives a nice chewable performance. I would have preferred this to be lighter on the mouthfeel. It is a pale ale anyway. Likeable. Had fun with this but hadn’t blown me away, though I know that Toppling Goliath are, or rather, should be worth it.
3.8 Aroma: Mildly Citrus, Mildly Piney, Mild Crackers... Appearance: Mildly Hazy Orangish/Golden Straw Hue, Passes Some Light, White Head, Mild Lacing... Taste: Piney, Mild Citrus... Mouthfeel: Decent Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Mildly Drying
3.6 22 oz. bottle from Prufrockstar - thanks again, Chris! Pours a somewhat cloudy gold with a finger of barely off-white head, soft and foamy in texture, that settles into a lasting cap while leaving heavy lace in the glass. There’s a pretty big malt backbone immediately on display here, offering some heft and softness and sweetness, with bread, cracker, and cereal. The hops here offer citrus fruits, tea, and melon rind. Light-bodied, with soft carbonation and a smooth, malty mouthfeel with a kind of odd melon rind finish. It’s an odd one. Good, and easily drinkable, but not up to the standard of other hoppy TG stuff.
3.4 Thanks Huhzubendah for sharing the bottle! Poured into a taster showing moderately filtered neon yellow with sparse white foam. The nose shows a mix of spruce and pine. The palate is medium bodied and moderately carbonated. Flavors of spruce and pine but slightly too sharp and not enough spruce/pine. Adzuki sweetness on the finish.
4.2 64 oz. growler. Originally reviewed 6/6/2014. Hazy orange body. Very cloudy. Medium white head. Leggy as I swirl it. Some lacing clings and drips down the sides. Fragmented surface foam. Nose has lots of orange hops. Hints of lemon and grassiness. Gives it a bit of a Nelson hop aroma. Sweet and doughy. The hop flavor is dynamic. Immediate orange citrus. Moves toward a lemon flavor. Grassy transitions between the flavors. The finish is mango and tropical. Sweet pale malts throughout. Minimal bitterness. It’s heavy for a pale ale. Maybe overly sweet. Medium carbonation. Excellent hop profile. Atypical malt profile for a pale ale, but very drinkable nonetheless.
4.0 Bottle from Zipp’s in Minneapolis. Bottling date is sort of smudged but it appears to be either February, March or April 6th, 2016. Smells decently fresh (drinking on 05/09/16, my 2 year ratebeer anniversary!). Pours a really pretty orange yellow glow, big frothy white head. Aroma is lots of orange, tangerine, peach, mango, wow, bursting with citrus and tropical notes. Also has a decent dankness to it, green onions, with a good biscuit malt backbone. Flavor is really nice orange, peach, pineapple, spot of mango in there. Nice hop bite without being too aggressive in the finish. Medium effervescence. It’s really good, surprisingly fresh-tasting. This is my second beer from Toppling goliath and I am properly impressed. I really am shocked at how good they are. I knew their reputation, but damn.
3.9 Hazy yellow orange with a small head. Great lacing. The aroma is has some tangerine peel, resin, and some mild sulfur and onion you find with Summit or sometimes Columbus hops. The flavor has some nice citrus hop notes, but also some earthy spiciness, and a nice malt backbone. Good stuff.
3.5 SOft pale gold with some haze and two fingers of white ehad. Nose is homebrewish with soft fruit and some oxidation and muddled notes. Pine and citrus rind. Muddled hops in the flavor. Soft fruit and citrus rind with some pine and oxidation. Soft carbonation with a medium body.
3.6 From notes (11/14/15). It’s tasty and pleasantly hoppy, but it also felt a little underwhelming. Good hops, good light malt, but a tad forgettable.
4.0 Lightly clouded straw colored with a tan head. Muted dark tropical fruit notes, maybe a touch of pineapple, orange citrus, some light hay. Decently bitter, strong malty body. Slight oiliness. Fairly chewy. Medium body, decently long finish. Excellent.
3.8 Bottle shared by Dallas Clear golden with a medium sized off-white head, good lacing. Aroma is floral and green hops. Flavor is floral and citrus Very good
3.6 02/03/16 bomber, opened on 03/04/16. Light straw-to-orange color, hazy appearance. Light citrus aroma with perhaps a bit of spiciness. Tall white head with moderate carbonation, leaving lots of lacing as it recedes. Moderately to substantially bitter beginning, middle, and finish. Piney. Not as "juicy" as I would have expected from the brewer’s deScription and the appearance. The finish is clean as the bittering fades. Mouth feel is good for the style. There is not much malt flavor or body evident. Not spectacular, but a sound, well done American Pale Ale. I would add it to my regularly purchased beers list if it was in a package other than bomber. I get the impression, after this beer and Pompeii that the "juiciness" of TG Decorah-brewed beers lasts just a couple of weeks. At a month old, this beer is still very good, but I suspect it has lost some of its flavor and aroma.
4.0 Bomber. Thanks, hyroglyphk. The beer is a bright orangey yellow color. The liquid is very cloudy, just barely translucent. Thick head of fine white foam. Tons of lacing, very good retention. The aroma is quite hoppy with a light crackery malt background. Hops provide flavors of lime, pineapple, grapefruit, mild sweaty onion, sweet wildflowers, tangerine and mild pine. The onion is actually pretty ok here, and I typically don’t like that hop flavor. That and the lime differentiate it a bit from the pack of recent top pale ales. Taste has a lot of sweet hoppiness with a crinkly edge of lime. Mild pale malt sweetnesss, just some simple very lightly caramel-ish sugar to hold up the hops. Moderately dry. Probably moderate bitterness - if not for all of the mildly bitter hoppy beers floating around now, I’d call it mild. Easy to drink. Light mouthfeel with a light touch of creaminess. Pretty low astringency. Nice finish full of lingering hop flavor. Solid beer. This would be a nice bomber to have around on shelves.
4.2 Medium brass and orange body when poured out of the bomber. Thanks Rogers! The head is dense and off white. Nose of powerful grapefruit and a little bit of pine. Notes of light soap and leather are also present. The taste is bursting with fresh grapefruit and wood. Bits of musk is also present. The bodybis light and lively. Overall an absolutely solid hop forward pale ale.
3.7 Bottle shared by me. Alone. Pours a hazy light yellow with thick white head, excellent lacing. Aroma is floral and citrus hops, some onion. Taste is more of the same, minimal malts, hoppy and clean. Nice citrus notes on the tongue. Really good.
3.5 Bomber poured into a snifter. 4.25 A: Murky brown tinted orange color. Two fingers of frothy/creamy off-white head. Retention is good and nearly a full finger of lacing is left. 3.75 S: This is the most grassy, herbal, earthy of the TG hops I’ve had, though it has some citrus as well. Jasmine herbalness, avocado, grapefruit, orange, lemon zest. 3.75 T: Again this is earthy and herbal. Lots of jasmine again with hints of chrysanthemum. Grapefruit, mild tropical fruits, orange, lemon. Earthy with wildflower herbs. Mild bitterness. Light caramel maltiness with some yeasty breadiness. 3.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Mild creaminess and super smooth. 3.75 D: This is different than most of their hoppy beers and while it’s pretty good, it isn’t quite the same deliciousness as their fruit bombs. ★ 835 characters DavoleBomb, Jan 23, 2016
3.9 From a bomber shared in Jackson WY. Pours a hazy gold with a thick off white head. Aroma of mandarin orange. Flavors of orange and lemon. Tasty.
3.6 Bomber courtesy of Henrik. Pours hazy tiny burnt pale golden with a small frothy white head that leaves lots of spotty trace on the glass. Smell is fruity, grassy and woody with crackers, white bread, grapefruit juice, mango, pineapple, grass, pine needles, cedar, lemon zest and hints of cardboard. Taste is tiny sweet, bitter, fruity and tiny grassy. Mouthfeel is soft, round, tiny dry, tiny astringent and medium bodied. Finish is bitter with crackers, white bread, grapefruit juice, pineapple, grass, pine needles, cedar wood and lemon zest. Solid at this age but I suspect it’s damn good fresh!
3.8 Bottle at Extra, extra tasting at Koppmansgatan Göteborg, 160212. Hazy golden/orange beer with a decent offwhite head. Hoppy pine aroma, citrus, cedar, floral, grapes, peach, passion fruit, some wood and perfume. Hoppy citrus flavor, passion fruit, cedar, hay, grapes, floral, woody, hay, some caramel. Good APA with attitude.
4.1 Pours an orange/gold color with white head. Nice hops aromas and flavors without being too bitter
3.3 Shared bomber poured to snifters, showing a cloudy, orangey gold color, with a modest layer of soft white head foam that diminished expeditiously to light film & a bubbly ring, with some dots & dashes of lacing. The nose was grass & greenery, with a touch of resin, and citrus as lemon & grapefruit. These notes lightened in the flavor, as the texture & mouthfeel also washed out a bit. A light to medium body, and modest carbonation didn’t come to the rescue. Also involved in the taste was moderate earthy, citrusy, and rind-like bitterness, with a finishing dryness. Very drinkable, but not altogether wowed.
3.5 Bottle shared with BBGTC. Pours hazy golden, with a big creamy off white head. Aroma is sweet tropical hops with mango, peaches and orange, and some grassy notes. Full body, with soft soft carbonation. Flavour is hoppy with sweet tropical hops with peach, mango and some bitter notes of orange peel and herbs, as well as some sweet malty notes.
3.4 18.01.2016, 22 oz bottle (dated 07.07.2015) sampled @ BBGTC tasting: Nice creamy mediumlasting head, hazy. Aroma is slightly dry fruity, leafs, moss, lawn, hops, citrus peel, minerals, alcohol, light malts. Taste is dry grassy, weeds, leafs, citrus peel, alcohol, minerals, hay, hops, light malts, hints of paper. Medium bitterness, slightly dry and harsh mouthfeel. Fair enough.
3.3 Bottle, shared with BBGTC. Hazy orange body with a medium white head. Nose is rose water, apricot, peaches, mango, wet grass and hints of pine, grapefruit and citric peel. Taste is bitter herbs, caramel, citric peel, pine and hints of red fruits, apricot and mango. Light body, medium carbonation. Nice and refreshing pale ale, but somehow the sweetness and bitterness don’t integrate properly.
3.7 Aroma is malt and citrus. Taste is sweet with juicy orange and dry lemon. Most of the bitterness seems to come from that lemony-ness. Nicely balanced. Palate is a bit heavier than most APAs, which is just fine with me, juicy, maybe a bit oily. The lemon is a bit forward for my tastes, but this is an excellent APA, a style I’m typically not a huge fan of.
3.6 Pours a hazy golden yellow from the bomber with thin bubbly white head that leaves light lace. Aroma of light citrus hops and pale malts, a bit of oxidation. Taste follows, crisp and clean, but nothing stands out. No date on the bottle, but I feel like it?s got some age, at least a couple months. Still, not horrible though.
4.0 Bottle. Hazy orange liquid with medium off-white head. Aroma of citrus, tangerine, grain, mango, weed, light bread and lychee. Taste is dry and light to medium bitter with notes of tangerine, yuzu, citrus, grain and mango. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Solid golde. Grate.
3.9 Pour out of 22 oz bottle, hazy yellow pour with white head, aroma brought notes of lemon, floral, spice notes, some honey, slight citrus peel. Taste was a mix of orange, lemon, citrus peel, nice spice, floral notes with biscuit, bread, slight yeast, finishing fairly bitter, dry.
4.3 Pours a semi clear, slightly cloudy intense orange with a medium frothy white head. Aromas of oeach, apricot, orange, pine, kiwi, and fresh squeezed tangerine. Taste is very well balanced and leans toward hoppy and fruity rather than malty. Mouthfeel is sprightly and lively with medium body and carbonation. Very good!!
