Trappist Achel Extra Bruin (de 3 Wijzen)

Trappist Achel Extra Bruin (de 3 Wijzen)

Huge, copper-colored, bottle-conditioned ale, still hot off the presses, Achel Trappist Extra is the latest from the tiny brewery at the St. Benedictus Abbey at Achel, in the Northeast of Belgium. At this year's World Beer Championships in Chicago, the Extra was easily the best of the many Trappist beers tasted, scoring 97 points and an "Exceptional" rating. You will find this a very satisfying beer, with just a little malt sweetness, dried fruit flavors, warm sherry notes, and a brisk balancing backdrop of fresh hop bitterness.

3.9 Bottle shared. Aroma of raisins, malts, caramel, sweetness, fruitiness. Medium body, good sweet and fruity taste. Pretty traditional belgian quadrupel, but still really nice beer.
3.8 W aromacie suszone owoce, karmel taki fajny.
Ottima quad trappista belga.
3.7 assaggiata all'abazia rimane sempre un'esempio di ottima birra d'abazia belga
4.1 Creamy light brown head left a good cover on a rich mahogany coloured still body. Malt, dark chocolate, raisin & milk chocolate aroma. Medium to full bodied, silky, creamy & smooth over the tongue with a tingle on the back. Sweet, malt, chocolate, raisin, syrup, dark berry & dark spirit tastes.
3.7 Bevuta in bottiglia da 75. Esteri di vitigno nell'aroma. Colore scuro con schiuma poco persistente. Fgr
4.2 0,75l bottle. Pours brown with off-white head. Aroma of raisin, toffee, christmas cake, figs, just a lot of dried and dark fruits in the aroma, malt, yeasty. Taste is sweet, raisin, toffee, dark fruits shows up big time after a while, christmas bread/cake, malty. Belgian yeast also. Fantastic.
4.3 This was never on my radar even though I love strong dark Belgians. I noticed it recently at my favorite beer store, and I trust the proprietor, he assured me it was outstanding, and he was right. After having a few American attempts at the style recently I remembered what this style is all about. Just a strong dark with a little extra. The nose was powdery chocolate, and some spiceness with a hint of dark fruit. The taste was clean, and full of dark fruit, figs, plums. The finish was dry, the alcohol was missing though at the end of my glass I noticed a small burn. Well done!
4.1 Warszawa ul. Wrzeciono
4.0 nice, pudding sweetness a little oil and still a soul. all brown tasting touch of gravy, fruit and frothy smooth.
3.5 Deep brown, small brown head. Lightly roasty, flavor has caramel, some fig, raisin, roasty. Heavily carbonated.
3.5 Backlog, bottle when these first came into the states about 7-8 years ago. Pretty sure I bought it at Red,White, and Brew in Morestown or Maple Shade. Color is brown with a medium top. Nose and flavor were fig, caramel malt, plums, oak, and brown sugar. Probably a bit too much carbonation and a warming chest finish. Alright, but I prefer other Trappist producers
4.6 Another long desired Belgian quadrupel, I finally obtained Extra Bruin through an accessible retailer that took care of business. I have the 750 ml bottle to sample. Oh yes, and complete I am sure. Minimal information on the label, it does say 9.5% abv. I lift the cap and pour into my favorite Trappistes Rochefort glass. It arrives a medium-to-dark brown while completed with a thinnish, light tan top. I take a smell, dark fruit, bread, crackers and field. All this is prep, now I have a drink. My goodness, this is fine. A straightforward maltiness, dates, chocolate, a touch of vanilla, dark bread and raisin. It finishes with an appropriate bitterness. A thick consistency, chewy. This is a complete package folks. Comparable to the best quads I have had and it is my favorite style.
3.5 27 April 2019. At Zythos Bierfestival. Deputy Taster: Anke. Cheers to Ama Deke, Erwin, John & Meeki! Hazy brown, lasting, thin, frothy, tan head; some deposit. Aroma of candi sugar, caramel, pear syrup, candied date, dough, salted peanut, chocolate. Taste is medium malty sweet, quite nutty, restrained caramel, chocolate & fig, sourish brambleberry too; bitter edges of dried tea leaves, toast, clove (somewhat phenolic) & mocha, leading to a dryish, herbal hoppy finish, a bit earthy, where nuts & burnt caramel linger. Medium body, slick texture, lively carbonation. Doesn’t really distinguish itself for me at this moment. Reminder to have this one again, perhaps from a nicely aged bottle.
3.8 Bottle. Pours slightly ruby brown with massive tan head. Lots of carbonation. Aroma is candied sugar, bready malts, spices. Medicinal bitters, candied sugar, long caramel malts, some more spices. Long finish, bitter annis, dry grainy flavor. Certainly balanced, but I think more often than not I prefer tripels and blondes to Belgian dubbels and "bruins". It's listed as a quad but I miss the fruity aroma, sweet raisin character if it's actually meant to be that.
3.7 Bottle 0.75. Dark brown small tan head. Aroma yeast, dried banana, caramelised fruits. Smooth texture, full body. Sweet taste following the nose, adding liquorice.
3.8 Aroma: malty & chocolate Appearance: brown, hazy, sudsy lacing Flavour: initial candy sweetness followed by sweet malt and chocolate notes Palate: finishes a touch carbon and lingering malty
4.5 Excellente bière Belle amertume Belle robe brune/prune
3.9 Aromat karmelu, czekolady, brązowego cukru i mnóstwo owoców (jagody, wiśnie, rodzynki). Dalej lekki alkohol. Barwa ciemno czerwona do rubinowej, wydaje się klarowna. Piana beżowa, drobno pęcherzykowa, obfita i trwała. Smak słodki, z kwaskową i owocową kontrą. Dalej karmel, melano, czekolada, ale nuty rastrowe jednak w smaku dominują. Alkohol mimo wszystko nieźle ukryty. Goryczka poniżej średniej, słodowo-alkoholowa. Pełnia wysoka, wysycenie również i słodowo-estrowy finisz z lekką nutą alkoholową.
4.0 Bottle. Birthday gift from my wife and boys. Poured hazed brown, off white head. Aroma of yeast, sweet fruit, grape, raisin. Taste was mild sweet, wine, grape, raisin, dark fruit.
4.0 Bottle. Dark brown color with lacing belge head. Aroma has caramel, dark malt, dark fruits and yeast. Taste is malty sweet with long sweet aftertaste. Flavors of caramel, dark malt, dark fruits, chocolate and yeast.
4.0 From backlog. Bottle from TaxFree Brüssel Airport. Dark brown with beige head. Malts, hops, yeast, champagne. Nice.
4.0 Bottle straight from Belgium, shared by Ken. Dark brown with big tan head. Belgian yeast and champagne. Rich with a slight boozy burn.
4.7 Complex and classy, Achel's Extra Bruin is maybe one of the most approachable Belgian Trappist beers that I've tried. This is also probably the liveliest Quad that I've drank to date. The actively visible carbonation gives an early warning to pour slowly. You'll hear the bubbling as clearly as you can see it. Brown color with a generous amount of head. It's sexy - for a Quad. Had I planned more wisely, I would have prepared some cheeses for this beer because it's practically begging to be paired with some. The yeast imparts strong notes of sherry and port. On the less vinous spectrum, there are tastes of dark grapes ripe from the vine and aged candied fruits. Despite all the carbonation, the texture is full and creamy. And yes, it would certainly soften the acidic notes of a good strong cheese. Damn, I really missed a great pairing opportunity with this one. Oh well, at least it's plenty good on it's own, too.
