3.2Bottle. Copper in colour. Very malty; lots of caramel, toasty malts, distinct oakiness. Fruity; dark fruits. Hoppy; leafy and peppery spicy hops. Full-bodied. Sweet-bitter malty fruity and dry throughout leading to a bitter malty finish. (2011-02-07)
3.0Helder mahoniebruin bier met kleine beige schuikraag.
Aroma: fruitig, pruim.
Smaak is zurig.
Licht mondgevoel met zacht koolzuur en bitterige afdronk met licht zurig einde.
3.6500ml bottle from Aldi in Berwick upon Tweed - Deep mahogany brown body, bubbly head. Toffee, wood, caramel and cake fruits rule here. Decent bittersweet quality about it too.
3.0*Old rating from 2010. Nice dry but roasted beer. Ale, dark roast, round. Easy to drink, round and nice.
3.0Brown bottle, cork and cask, half liter. Pours medium dark nut brown, transparent, with no head. Scent is medium dense nut with light airy body. Taste is a little sour, medium ale yeast and a light watery body. Fairly typical. End is residing sour notes and slightly acidic. Good.
3.3Bottle share at Beer Boutique. Thanks! Dark orange or brown, clear, still, big foamy tan head. Aroma is toffee, touch woody, a little cabbage. Body is medium, smooth, soft carbonation. Taste is bready, toffee, soft yeast character, light metallics. Oak not showing up loads but it’s noticeable. A quaffable interesting beer.

2.5Bottle. Metallic bread and sweet toffee malt. This is a poor relation to the jacobite and house ales.
3.0Bottle at home. Pours clear deep amber, nose is bready, malty toffee, taste is sweet, toffee, floral.
3.2This is a very well constructed beer, there really is not a lot to fault but at the same time there is not a lot to get excited about. Pours beautifully, deep copper red with a small off white head. Milk chocolate and light caramel nose, bit of fruit - pear and bananas. Surprisingly thin and watery. Short finish and moreish in a ’this should be better’ sort of way.
3.1Cask recently at the Guilford Arms. Rich royal oak brown colour. Smells of nuts with a metallic edge. Vegetal too. Middle palate doesn’t release very much either. Old school.
3.3Bottle, 500 ml at the 1745 Cottage Restaurant at the Traquair Estate. Pours dark amber to brown with off-white head. Caramel, malty, spicy, herbal.
1.5Honey aroma, a little moldy. Not tasty and nice. unpleasant sweetness. The hard-drinking
3.8500ml bottle: BBE Aug 15, poured into a UK pint sleeve in Dec 14. Nice looking brew, deep amber and clear, the head a full off-white blanket of foam. Malty, peaty and woody in the nose and taste. Slight sourness within the flavours which takes the sweet edge off the maltiness nicely. Good, wholesome feel to this brew, body depth is fine and the whole beer has an uplifting warmth within it’s make up: very drinkable.
3.6Clear, reddish beer with a decent bubbly head. Sweet, spicy aroma. Flavour is richy, fruity and malty with a touch of toffee and a surprisingly gentle finish. There’s almost a wine-like quality to the aftertaste. Very drinkable.

Crystal clear deep amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light and semi dry. Mild fine carbonation. Smooth lights malts, trace of caramel. Light dried fruits. Mild floral bitterness. Light finish. Fine but I want more from an Old Ale.
3.1500ml bottle at brew night. Pours clear copper, decent head. Aromas of light spice and toffee. Very malty toffee taste, faintest bitterness at the back, Bit thin on the finish. Not their best.
2.6Bottle @ weekly tasting shared by Dutchdrebus. Clear dark amber color, small off-white to beige head. Aroma is malts and a bit sweaty. Taste malts, a bit sweet, lightly caramel, slightly raisins. Average body, average carbonation.
3.1Bottle @ benzai. Clear copper colour with a small to medium sized off-white head. Smells like horrible smelly cheese, sweaty, tuinbonen. Tastes sweet, malts, hint of caramel. Tastes better than one would expect from the smell. Thin to medium body, soft carbo.
3.5500ml bottle pours a dark ruddy ale with an off-white fairly lasting head. Aroma, malt, some spicy notes. Taste, malty, dry, earthy with a mature spiciness, all rather ’grown-up’. I liked it.
2.9500ml bottle (Kultura, Kaunas) BB2014/02, drunk 2014/06
Watery aroma, dishwatery, dishcloth. Pleasant brown, nice tight off-white head. Thinnish palate. Some aged papery aspects. Malty, but concretely aged beyond its BB. Pub done wrong. However, a proper old ale should have longer legs.
2.6500ml bottle. Clear copper color. Medium size, white head, stays. Dirty cloth, malts, wort in aroma. Dirty, dusty, caramelly taste. Dry malts in aftertaste. Medium body.
3.1500ml bottle from Aldi Supermarkey (UK):
Malty with a earthy notes coming through & plenty of bitterness. Roasted notes appear around the middle & some subdued fruits as well but the earthy smells & strong malts dominate from the off with a strong nutty aroma backing this up. There is some spice but some off-notes seemed to appear throughout as well.
Dark caramel brown with a clear body & thin, patchy lacing on top of the beer builds up a little around the circumference but leaves a lot of bare patches in the centre.
Thankfully this one picks up a little in the taste department and doesn’t seem to have the same seemingly off notes that the nose featured. There was a strong and quite malty flavour coming through with a nutty taste too and some lighter fruits as well. There was a nice bitterness to this one with some caramel as well but this is fairly light.
Medium bodied with low carbonation and a very smooth feel with a soft and slightly bitter and dry mouthfeel.
The aroma was quite poor but the taste was a lot better with a lot of malts and some light fruits offset with a solid bitterness throughout and the beer proved an easy one to drink and turned out a lot better than I thought it would after the nose.
3.8Bottle. Clear amber/brown body with a thin off-white head. Fine carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of caramel, brown bread, wood and dirt. Flavour of earth, nuts, peppery biscuit, sweet tea and copper. Thin body with a watery mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Subtle and very easy to drink.
3.2Full flavoured malty ale not as complex as some but with good depth of flavour and a nice viscosity and carbonation.
Rerated a bit watery with malt and vanilla wood flavours. Not as good as I remember. But still quite good.
3.1Nose is malt and sweet, slight treacle, a little leather; nice but without depth. Taste is treacle, hazelnuts, a tiny bit of smoke and roast, leading to a woody, nutty, tacky finish. Mouthfeel is a bit slick.
A decent beer, but a little underwhelming.
2.5Amber and hazy. Has a white head, medium duration. Hoppy aorma, spicy and herbal. Sharp too. Flavor starts heavy sweet, light acid, moderate bitter finish.
