Tröegs Flying Mouflan

Tröegs Flying Mouflan

The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

3.8 7/26/2010. From bottle. Orange amber color with a white head. Sweet malty aromas with caramel, sugar, sweet fruit and toffee. Finishes with alcohol burn. Very good!
3.9 Thanks to rowingbrewer for this extra, cheers Mark! Vintage 2010 A: Pours a slightly hazy burnt fire orange ale. The ale presents with a two finger peanut head which falls to medium sheet of the same. spotty on sheeting lace here. S: Whew! Sharp one here. Plenty of hops fell into this kettle. The alcohol is sharp here as well. The beer is gonna be bitter and spicy on the palate (smells like warrior, columbus, simcoe). Very hardcore nose. T: Malt, pepper, savory, brown sugar, molasses, hints of cardboard oxidation (good here). The beer is hoppy still. I think this beer would take two years and it would develop a fantastic flavor. The malt profile is deep, toffee, caramel, coffees, cocoas, burnt sugar all fight for the balance and will finalize their hierarchy over time. Wish I had another for the cellar. M: Full body with low carbonation. Although I tend to drink carb low beers, but I fear this beer will be completely flat in a couple years after aging. Right now, good, loose syrupy feel. O: Well crafted a year out. Fresh, I’m certain this is a hop-bomb and I likely wouldn’t enjoy it - hop profile here tends to be too spicy. Nonetheless, this beer was well done. 3.8 Outstanding. First glass is good...second one is over the top good. Malty carmel finish with a hoppy front. Alcohol is well hidden unlike other barleys I’ve had. Troeg’s never disappoints. Combo somewhere between nugget necter and troegenator
3.6 Bottle share thanks to Homer. Pours a murky deep brown reddish tint. Deep malt aroma, caramel, darker malts, doe toffee character. Smooth, creamy, toffee, light roast character.
3.2 Bottle thanks to BMart. Pours a murky dark red. minimal off white head. Nose is honey sweet lacking most esters. Taste is similar. Slightly chewy with some candy, fruit roll up flavors but not much complexity. Drinkable but other than fruitiness kinda bland. No alcohol warming. Clean.
3.8 Deep amber-chestnut colored body, off white head, decent lacing. Caramel, nuts, toffee, toast, a little cardboard. Medium to full bodied, smooth carbonation, light sweetness, prolonged finish.
3.8 22oz bottle thanks to RamyG4 Pours cloudy dark amber with a small beige head and some lacing. Aroma of toasted malts, toffee, brown sugar and pine. Flavors of sweet toffee, woody, grainy and pine resin A nice easy drinking Barleywine. This is good now, I’d love to try this after cellared for a few year.
3.8 22 ounce bottle. Pours a dark amber color with a small biege head. Aroma of caramel, fruit, and tobacco. Taste is leather/Tobacco, caramel, fig, and grass. Although it is a pretty well balanced barley wine its Mouthful is a tad thin for me.
3.1 Bottle shared by MrPickles...thanks Andy! - Pours murky brown with a thin bubbly head. Nose is bready, a bit yeasty, and a touch of herbal hoppiness. Taste is more hoppy, herbal with light yeast and lots of dry bread. Gentle body, with soft carbonation.
4.0 Pours a deep mahogany rust color with a finger of khaki foam. The nose is toasty with nice malt backbone and sweet toffee, rustic walnut and a trace of grass. The palate follows with a nice round mouthfeel that thins out and bitters o the finish. Flavors of brown sugar, pecans, lots of grassy bitterness and some burnt toffee too. Really tasty and interesting flavor profile that isn’t hit you over the head sweet.
3.8 Bottle. This is a big burly barley wine. One of the better mass produced versions out there.
3.8 draft at Coles, Buffalo. creamy, brownish amber pour. rich toffee filled aroma. Rich, boozy flavor, big toffee caramel maltiness. Falls somewhat flat in the finish, sort of abrupt flavor finish. little lingering. overall, a solid barleywine that falls a little short of top echelon
3.8 22 ounce bottle. Thanks Brenton! Pours a cloudy reddish brown with a small biege head. Aroma of malt, caramel, fruit, and florals. Taste is caramel malt, dark fruit, grass, and florals. A touch sweet. Very nice.
3.5 Pour at the Millvale beer Fest. A reddish brown pour with a off white head. The aroma is of dark fruits. The taste is of astringent alcohol.
4.2 Such a good barley wine. Pours a dark red/brown color with a tan head. Aroma is brown sugar, caramel, honey, and toffee. Taste is a sweet brown sugar, caramel, hints of cocoa, and some bitterness bite in the end but mellow. Mouth feel is a tad light but other than that this is fantastic.
4.1 Bomber from trade with JStax. Bottled April 2012. Pours a cloudy orange-brown color with a nice big frothy that fades normally and leaves nice webbing. Smells delicious. Candied sugar, caramel, chocolate, toffee, nuts, and some spicy/floral/citrus hops too. Taste is actually more bitter than sweet which is a little surprising. Still a very nice burnt sugar, caramel, chocolate flavor. Spicy and floral hops show up in the fairly bitter finish. A bit dry. Medium to thick body, somewhat chewy mouthfeel. Very nice barley wine. The hops have held up very well for being over a year old.
3.7 Nice rich barleywine that isnt too sweet. Lots of leathery dark fruits and a nice caramel toastyness. Not much hops or bitterness but you arent left with tongue scraping sweetness.
4.1 Bottle. Dark brown pour, soapy ring of carbonation and an aroma of heavy caramel and hops. Flavor is good & malty caramel, slightly nutty, and a good meld of toffee, hops and a little alcohol all the way through to the finish. Solid.
3.9 Finally got some on draft (Alewife, Baltimore) since they didn’t bottle this year. Served in a goblet, dark-brownish amber color with off-white head. Aroma of heavy malt sweetness, candy, dark fruit, brown sugar and alcohol. Taste is intense version of the aroma, very punch you in the face malt bomb (good thing). Heavy body, low carbonation, thick, rich, complex, syrupy, smooth with sweet boozy finish. Very good barley wine, hope they bottle it next year.
3.6 Bottle pour dark amber with some sediment. Nose strong malt, alcohol, syrup, some brown sugar. Taste caramel malt, sweetness, toffee, butterscotch, then finish with strong ethanol.
3.8 Tap at Max Burger, Longmeadow, 18/05/13. Murky dark mahogony brown with a thin light tan head. Nose is dark fruits, dates, bread pudding, toffee fudge, sugars. Taste comprises dark toffee, dark berry fruits, demerara sugar, fig rolls. Full bodied, fine carbonation, booze in the finish. Decent BW - alcohol well integrated keeping this drinkable.
4.1 Rustic hazy reddish with nice off-white dense head. Poured thick. Meaty malt nose. Spicy hop flavor along with big malt profile. Reminds me of the classic English barley wine only slightly amped up. Would welcome a 2-3 year old brew to see how it matures.
3.8 sweet and awesome, very rich, creamy .,and nutty but finishs dry even after 2 years! Well done guys!!!
3.7 Tap at ues pony bar. Pours kinda ugly cloudy brown. Nice nose of candy and dark fruits. Tastes of caramel, cookie dough, figs, earth, resin, and some floral notes. Dry on finish and not too sticky for barleywine. Slight alcohol warming which will carry me the 20 block walk home
3.4 Pourd darker than most barleywines, khaki head no lace. Aroma is booze and toffee with dark fruit. Taste is raisins and toffee, brown sugar, very smooth and super drinkable.
4.1 22 ounce bottle into snifter; Spring 2011 bottling, 2 years old now. Pours hazy dark ruby red color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, raisin, apple, toast, light pine, brown sugar, orange rind, brown bread, orange zest, floral, grass, candi sugar, and toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt notes with a fair amount of hop presence. Taste of caramel, raisin, apple, toast, brown sugar, light orange rind, light pine, brown bread, floral, candi sugar, and toasted earthiness. Minimal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, apple, caramel, toast, brown sugar, light pine, floral, candi sugar, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance and complexity of malt flavors with a fair amount of hop presence; with zero cloying sweetness present after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a creamy, fairly slick, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent American Barleywine at 2 years of age. Very nice balance and complexity of malt flavors with moderate hops; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.
3.8 From a bomber. Pours medium brown with thin tan head. Tastes like sweet dates, raisins, hints of caramel and chocolate. Roasted, sweet aroma, smells like figs. Medium body and medium carbonation.
4.0 Bottle. Pours hazy brown with thick, creamy beige head; good retention and some lacing. Aroma is caramel and cookie malts, floral hops, dates figs, candy sugar, and light toast. Flavor is sweet malts forward with good supporting spicy and floral hops, dark fruit esters, and some woody notes; dry finish. Medium body and low carbonation.
3.7 Split Thy Skull event at Tatt Moms. Dark hazy amber pour. Slight foamy head. Similar to the strong high-hopped Nugget Nectar but even stronger and with some dark fruit and vegetable notes. The darker malts mellow out the finish a bit, but still big bad stuff!
3.3 Reddish amber little off white head; aroma is sweet sugary malty with some hops; Flava is rich sweet and nice hoppy bite; feels medium bodied; finishes long bitter and some greens(grass ? Celery?)
