Tröegs JavaHead Stout

Tröegs JavaHead Stout

JavaHead Stout, first released as Scratch 15, contains a blend of locally roasted espresso and Kenyan coffee beans by St. Thomas Roasters in Linglestown, PA.

This recipe is based off of our original 2005 oatmeal stout. After the boil the hot wort passes through our hopback vessel packed full of whole leaf hops and a bed of coffee beans - akin to a French press - intensifying the coffee nose and releasing hints of coffee flavor. The result is a lush oatmeal mouthfeel balanced with cocoa, roast and subtle coffee flavors.

3.6 Pours up a dark brown color, nearly black, with a tan head. Aroma has chocolate and malts. Taste follows with lots of bittersweet chocolate at first then turns slightly bitter and roasty with a hint of coffee. Fairly smooth.
4.3 3/28/18 With A as part of the best early Easter basket ever!! Poured from bottle. Jet black with a thick, fluffy khaki head. Label is really nice as well this beer is a beauty. Nose is big coffee and dark chocolate. Noticeable hop funk as well. Powerful and delicious aroma. Taste is tons of coffee and nutty dark chocolate fading into a bitter finish with earthy hops. Slight initial sweetythat fully gives way to bitter. Very coffee/mocha forward. Wonderful! Medium palate with lingering bitterness from the coffee and hops. Overall, a killer offering from Tröegs!! I guess I wasn’t prepared for the hops/bitterness it the first time but this is amazing!
3.7 Dark brown beer with a thick foamy chocolate milk head. Nose of mocha, cola, and roasted grain. Flavor is fairly dry with unsweetened coffee and cream, dutch cocoa, and black strap molasses finished with a chalky bitterness. Medium-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel, this is a good beer.
3.6 Aroma: some anise, coffee, hops, alcohol rather present. Taste of soft oats, decent amount of coffee: again soft, not too burned or bitter, followed by a distinct hoppy finish. MF rather watery for a stout. Lacks a bit of body, not bad but a bit two-dimensional ( coffee and hops ) to be memorable.
3.6 Bottle from Consumers Beverages. Lots of coffee all around. Quite some coffee bitterness initially, but it gets better after.
3.7 Very nice head and body. Nose has light off bottle flavor. Flavor is light coffee and medium stout. For abv, more can be accomplished. Meh... would like to try in draft form.
3.7 Aroma: coffee, roasted malt Taste: saturated taste of coffee enhanced by malt and chocolate notes.
4.2 Beautiful dark color Rich deep taste, some thickness to it Notes of chocolate and coffee but not overwhelming the beer

3.5 12oz bottle Pour is VERY dark, head is thin but persistent. Aromas of vanilla cocoa dominate, Bittersweet chocolate with a slight spicy aftertaste. Above average but not outstanding in my opinion. Worth a try.

3.9 12 ouounce bottle. Pours dark brown with a large rocky tan head. Subtle roasted malt nose hints at chocolate and coffee. Flavor is espresso and bittersweet chocolate. Slightly earthy with sweet notes. Full bodied with a chewy mouthfeel. Finishes with bitter, spicy hops. A very good coffee stout.
2.9 Geruch nach Schokolade, Beeren und Rotwein sowie Tabak. Geschmack leider nicht so voll und rund sondern eher kantig, sehr bitter und kratzig im Abgang.
3.2 12 ounce bottle. Hints of chocolate and coffee for the aroma. Pitch black in color. Sweet, taste of bitter chocolate. Smooth on the palate with a little after bite. Overall this is above average stout.
3.5 Drink from bottle. Smell of coffee, hop. Taste of coffee, smooth, tannin at finish. Good but quite plain, not complex.
2.5 APPEARANCE- super dark. Hear is surprisingly light. FLAVOR- pretry plain. Not much coffee in it.
4.3 Schwarz, lichtundurchlässig. Geruch leicht säuerlich und röstig. Im Geschmack dann bitter zum Ende. Sehr gutes Mundgefühl. Leicht alkoholisch. Mit mentholähnlichem Nachgeschmack.
3.7 Boardman, OH - on tap at Magic Tree Pub and Eatery. Motor oil like black pour, sticky mocha colored head, nice rings of lacing. Nice espresso accents and a touch of cocoa in the aroma. Solid flavor, fresh brewed coffee, baker’s unsweetened chocolate, a touch of tobacco and oak in the back end. Nice, thick mouthfeel.
3.2 Fresh from the tap in the Monterey Bar. Full dark with nice foam head. Interesting rosty taste. Light bitterness at least.

3.4 355 ml bottle @ Tammela Vintage Tasting. Pours a dark brown, almost black colour with a small beige head. Aroma of rich roastiness, coffee and some caramel. Flavour of dark rich roastiness, some herbal notes, espresso, a bit of grassy bitterness and mild sweetness. Medium bodied. Quite long, harsh, grainy finish. I’m not sure if this is fresh enough.
3.7 35,5 cl bottle @ Tammela vintage tasting. Freshest by 071116 Aroma has licorice and coffee. Flavour has jalopeno-like vegetables typical to mocha beers, coffee, licorice and some mild hops. Very dry and very high on coffee. Good, although the vegetable notes disturb a bit.
3.5 Bottle. Pours dark brown-black with thick tan head and substantial lacing. Nose of coffee with chocolate and earthy hop notes. Coffee and roasted malt upfront followed by chocolate with some pleasant bitterness in the creamy finish.
3.2 Sample on tap @ the brewery. Pours a dark brown with a thick tan head. Medium thick creamy body with the aroma of dark malts. Dark roasted malts with some coffee flavors. A tad thin but not bad.
4.1 Tröegs Java Head Stout has a medium-to-thick beige head, a dark brown appearance, with reddish-brown, as the sunlight hits the edges, and moderate lacing left behind. The aroma is of dark malt, roasted coffee, some rich chocolate, and, perhaps, oats. Taste is of all that, with an acrid, but not unpleasant bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Java Head finishes medium dry. RJT
5.0 Pours dark brown, black with a taste of coffee & malt with a smooth, creamy, earthy finish.
3.9 Lovely deep brown with thick dark tan head. Medium roast coffee, toasted malt, hint of dark chocolate, and some earthy hops on nose. Brown sugar, toffee up front in mouth, fades to the aftertaste of coffee, then clean hop finish and some bitterness. Medium mouthfeel with moderate finish length.
3.2 Thick black pour med tan head. Light roast aroma. Bitter upfront. Coffee ride in the middle. Then bitter after taste and finish.
