Tröegs LaGrave

Tröegs LaGrave

Inspired by nature’s untamed beauty, LaGrave (pronounced \l?-gräv\) is the first of our 12.7-oz. corked and caged bottle releases. Bottle conditioned and highly carbonated, this Triple Golden Ale is steeped in the tradition of strong ales originally brewed in Belgium. The unique Belgian yeast forms the bedrock of LaGrave’s complex flavors. Strong and alluring at 8% ABV, LaGrave boasts a sweet, fruity flavor with a well-rounded mouthfeel and semi-dry, lingering bitter finish.

Named after our fave French backcountry ski town, LaGrave’s rare yeast produces a rocky head releasing aromas of crusty bread and earthy spices. Our Triple Golden Ale carves out flavors of ripe pear, straw and black pepper with a dry, champagne finish.

3.6 very nice; had from a bottle poured into chalice. Golden yellow with some haziness.
3.1 Medium bead head. Yeasty, with a fair amount of sediment. Aromas of cola, grass, juicy tropical fruit. Sweet on the finish.
3.3 375 ml corked and caged bottle. Hazy honey gold color. Small foamy white head. Sweet fruity malt nose has yeasty notes. Flavor is more of the same, with honeyish notes. Dry champagne-like finish. Belgian in style, yet indistinctive.
4.0 DATE: April 18, 2017... OCCASION: watching Rogue One after a fun day of gardening and weeding... GLASSWARE: Affligem chalice... pours an opaque, dark amber body rife with tiny bubbles... the head is charged, fizzy, white and swift in its descent to a pencil-thin finish... immediate grapefruit, bourbon, pepper, clove, raisin, cranberry, and a nice brown ale sweetness... highly effervescent and lively at the teeth, dry at the finish, and lingering throughout the sip--encouraging the next, and the next... as per blond ales, succulently light and misleading... pepper, lilac, clove, grapefruit, citrus, lemon, and bright malts... a tight, medium-bodied ale that stays within the expectations of a tripel, as Troegs intended... what else to say? this small cork’n’cager is about worth its price tag, and definitely a slow night sipper...
2.9 I am a Troegenator Double Bock fan . . .good stuff. However, this La Grave, despite the fancy corked and caged bottle, was otherwise not distinctive. It did pour and maintain a great head . . . tall and rocky as the bottle says. I did finally pick up the "crusty bread" as described as well. It was more bitter than expected which could be the "pepper" -- or -- a really dry Brut champagne finish. There was just nothing enjoyably distinctive to me that would cause me to buy it again. Doesn’t stop me from being a Troegenator fan though.
4.2 Caged and corked bottle pours a sparkling bright golden color with a big, bubbly, foamy white head, at least 2" tall, although slowly settling to 1" after five minutes. Loads of bubbles zipping north up the glass! Aroma: yeasty bread, pear, banana and clove. Flavor: lemon, white pepper, banana, clove and apricot. Light bodied with a crisp finish yet creamy mouthfeel, along with a prickly carbonation on the tongue. A very good U.S.-brewed version of a Duvel.
3.9 Bottle pour into tulip glass. Color is cloudy amber with a foamy head. Aroma is bread, belgian yeast, sweet fruitiness, and spices. Tastes of apricot, banana, and spices with a dry finish. I enjoyed this one
3.7 375ml bottle at The Headmaster’s Pub in Sperryville VA. Poured a hazy amber color with a medium sized, white head. Aroma was light fruits, apricot, some hay, fizzy notes. Citrus, light candi notes. Light spicy notes.
3.4 At JCC 5k Brew and Brisket run. Cloudy yellow with lots of foam. Taste of spice, clove, banana. Don't love the style, but this is decent.
3.3 Pours a cloudy dirty yellow with a large foamy white head. Nice aroma of Belgian spices, bready dough, and yeast. Flavors don’t linger for long. Slightly dry finish. Not as good as I expected but OK.
3.8 Bottle. It pours a hazy orange color with an off white head. The aroma is bready with some dried apricot, banana and baking spice. The flavor is the same. Bready, bread crust, light bananas and dried apricots. Lots of nice fruitiness and more subtle spicy yeast. Strong alcohol presence and noticeable earthy, herbal bitterness. Full bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and a dry finish. Medium to high carbonation. The alcohol is a little strong, but not out of style. Very tasty.
3.6 Bottle from Jeremy. Aroma spot on for a tripel. Head a bit weak. Buttery consistency. Mild savory notes. Hay, grain, meadow, pepper. A bit of zing on the finish.
3.9 375ml bottle pours out a hazy gold topped with a small head. Nose is nice sourdough bread spice yeast some belg candy. Taste is more of the nice bread malt yeast spice belg candy sugar.
3.8 Bottle from the brewery. Murky amber with medium carbonation, yeasty aroma. Spicy flavor has balance of hops and malt. Finish is moderately bitter, not lengthy.
4.4 Pours golden to light golden & tastes of very very mild hops, malt, yeast & lemon.
3.7 375 ml cork and caged. Pours with thin carbonation that quickly fades. Sweet with banana notes. Well balanced.
3.1 Pours very cloudy, peach/yellow with a lot of foam. This beer smells like a Belgian ought to smell; pears, bananas, strong yeast, herbs, grass. The flavor is slightly boozy and smooth, but a little medicinal on the finish.
3.6 375ml corked bottle, thanks Christina! Spicy Belgian yeast aroma with apple and pear fruity esters as well as grass and straw character. Pours cloudy golden colored with a thin white head that has very little retention and decent lacing. Starts with spicy Belgian yeast flavors as well as some fruity apple and pear notes. Finishes smooth with a slightly bitter note with grass and straw flavors. Finishes a bit off, but a nice Belgian overall.
3.7 Bottled Sept. 3, 2015, consumed in Feb. 2016: Clear, deep golden. Gentle pour generates a voluminous cap of sticky and persistent foam. Quiet but clean aroma of German noble hops, uncured hay, Russian sage, pepper and melon. Prickly carbonation. Opens with a juicy push of bright flowery hops coupled with slick fruity esters tempered by a warming alcoholic glow. Malt is nice and polished: grassy and haylike. Spicy hop bitterness stimulates saliva and underscores the clean fermentation. Quite luscious hopping, combined with ample residual sweetness, causes the lips to smack. Well balanced lilac and haylike pils malt comprise the graceful, mellow finish. It’s nearly impossible to find this style brewed to tradition and without being severely underattenuated and/or a banana bomb. But Tröegs has done very well here (same with the dubbel). If they just sprinkled in some more phenols, I wouldn’t complain. I am surprised to find that this shows no signs of oxidation and is still quite vital after seven months in the bottle. That said, I’m very much looking forward to a fresh bottle!
4.3 Solid Belgium beer, tasty and drinkable, beautiful head and colo4, we’ll balanced will buy again
3.6 Spicy and citrus aroma, hazy brown appearance, medium body, fruity and herbal flavor, Belgium or Dubbel flavor in a tripped
3.4 Bottle at home, 21st February 16. Pours amber, aroma is complex, yeast, spice. Taste is yeast, grain, complex, bitter, spice and floral. Not bad for the style
3.0 12.7 oz bottle. Hazy orange brown with a snowy white head. Nose is yeast, toffee and dough with hints of citrus peel. Oily medium body with fizzy carb. Not sure why I keep trying tripels when I rarely find one I like. Figured I’d give the home state folks a shot for my 60th. Taste is cloying orange bubblegum, green leaves and overripe peaches. Long filmy finish with cardboard drying. Yup, it’s a tripel.
3.7 Pours hazy apricot with a white head. Aroma presents fruity, dusty and nutty tones. Strong flavor features fruity, malty and hoppy notes, while body is firm and fizz is strong. Nothing "grave" about this!
2.1 I just tasted this one on one with a westy and it actually is not that much worse. From a corked bottle. Golden with a slight haze and lots of sediment. Bitter up front and a tad citrusy. Very good co2 prickles the palate. Aroma is just plain good beer. Could use a few more manners. Ye s, the finish leaves a bit of an astringent aftertaste.
3.5 Pale golden blonde pour with a thin lively white head .... Aroma of fruity Belgian yeast (apples, pears) and light spices ..... Taste is of Belgian yeast fruity Apple, pear and light peach ... Some caramel malt and dry lightly spicy and very lightly grassy hopped .... Sweet and lightly tart ... Finish is dry and mouthfeel is lively .... Abv hidden well .... Not bad for the style
4.2 Heed the bottle’s warning: pour it slowly and carefully. Everything about the beer is above average, but it leaves just a hint of aftertaste that isn’t as smooth as the rest of it. It’s a very good beer from a cool little brewery, and I’d drink it again.
3.3 Aroma - is a heavy dose of Belgian yeast, biscuit malt, spicy hops, and a bit of alcohol. Appearance - hazy orange, decent frothy white head. Taste - spicy hops, soft fruits, light citrus Palate - medium body, soft carbonation, spiced finish moderate in length.
3.7 Pours gold with while fluffy head. Aroma is floral, pear, citrus and earthy. Taste is sweet with some tartness. Medium bodied, slick texture with a quick lightly drying finish.
3.4 Pours a five+ fingered white head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Hazy dark straw color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Light fruity nose and flavor is some sweetness, peachy, some bitterness at finish. $4.59 for a caged & corked 375ml bottle from Julio’s Liquors Westborough, MA.
