4.1 The body has a dark caramel brown color with reddish highlights and a tall tan head on top. The head is very long lasting and thick. It is supported by nice visible carbonation that streams up the sides of the glass. As I drink it leaves behind lots of cool lace patters. There is a nice malty aroma with toasted bready notes and sweet roasted caramel notes. Just behind that is light earthy/leafy hop presence. It is sweet overall with nice roasted and toasted character. Sweet caramel and nutty notes mix with dark chocolate and roasted coffee notes. This is then backed up in the finish with some earthy and leafy hop spice and bitterness for some balance. The body has a good medium feel with just enough carbonation to give it some life.
2.9 Draft at brewery tap room. Pours brown with a khaki head. Leaves little lacing on the glass. Slight hints of nuttiness on the nose. A little stronger on the tongue but the nuttiness is still a bit too subdued for my taste. Finishes clean.
3.7 Vanilla, chocolate, nut, and a little booze in the aroma. Sweet flavor with vanilla, chocolate, and nuts. Lightly bitter coffee/chocolate finish. I liked this a lot better than I expected given the other ratings, but--full disclosure--I like sweet beers.
3.4 12oz bottle, brown pour, slight nutty aroma. Aroma of malt, nuts, & some caramel; Flavor of roasted sweet malt, caramel, some chocolate, and nuts. Smooth, medium body, non offensive brown ale.
3.2 On tap 4 oz. sample/flight at the Troeg's tasting room in Hersheypark, PA. Both the board at the tasting room and Troeg's website listed the ABV as 5.9%, which is much higher than the 4.4% at which this beer was previously listed. Opaque, dark brown with a small khaki head and excellent lacing. Aroma of caramel, chocolate, bread and nuts. Taste of roasted malt, caramel, nuts and chocolate. Medium/light body and medium carbonation. A very drinkable brew.
3.2 Bottle. This is a nice soft NB with a smooth mouthfeel and deeper flavor than usual for this style.
3.2 Originally reviewed: 6/8/09. Pours a cola color with a tan fluffy head on top. Retains fairly well, but there is no lacing at all. Smells like banana bread, brown sugar, some molasses, and caramel. Mouthfeel is thin and wet. Some mild carbonation on the tongue. Flavor of molasses, sweet breads and finishes with just a touch of bitterness. Not bad.
3.5 The dead have risen! Zombie beer from the past back by popular demand. A small batch brewed on the Scratch system, tap only for the locals at the brewery. A - Pours deep dark brown with a pillowy two finger tall white head leaving light streaks of lace down the glass. S - Smells of caramel, toffee, fresh roasted nuts, day old coffee, and a touch of molasses. Not the best smell but not the worst either. T - Starts off with a bit of sweetness; mostly molasses and caramel; quickly giving way to hints of nuts, stale coffee, and a touch of hop bitterness. Grows a bit watery at the end of the glass but it was still easy to finish. M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Smooth, slightly sweet feel with a bit of chewiness coming through more and more as it sits in the glass. O - I am glad to see this one back around, all be it for a short period of time. I have missed this one dearly as it is very easy to drink and the low ABV make it very sessionable. I shall get my fill while it lasts...
2.7 Lots of caramel, chocolate and most of all nut aroma and flavor to this one. Im not a big nut brown fan, but i still think I can be a fair judge, and this one seems to miss the mark.
3.4 Bought this at a local Canals while trying out other Troegs. Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. It resembles coke in a way. Dark but semi-transparent with a fizzy looking head. Head was medium sized but fizzled out rather fast. Smelled like some sort of nut, slightly off-putting. Taste is rather lacking, slightly nutty flavor. Goes down smooth though with a decent drinkability.
3.8 A - Pours a deep brown color with a touch of red around the edges and a half-finger of tan-brown head. The head fairly quickly reduces down to a ring around the glass leaving some nice lacing. S - Aroma is full of toasted toffee malts and a lot of nutty aroma. Also a nice hint of chocolate mixed in as well. T - Starts off with some nice sweet caramel malts and a lot of nutty flavor. Through the middle a touch of chocolate comes through with just a touch of hops. The finish is a mix of sweet caramel hops, some nutty flavor, and a touch of chocolate that linger nicely. M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. A little bit sweet overall with a nice dry finish and some flavors that linger on the tongue. D - Very drinkable. Lots of nutty flavors that blend really nicely with the rest of the flavors. The beer is fairly sweet, but not too sweet. Nicely balanced.
3.3 Dark brown/black color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of malt, nuts, & some caramel; Flavor of roasted sweet malt, caramel, some chocolate, and nuts; Overall, quite decent.
2.7 Poured into a pint glass. 4.0 A: Clear medium brown color. One finger of frothy tan head with average retention and lots of lacing. 3.0 S: Not really much going on here. Touch of graininess I guess. 3.0 T: Somewhat nutty. To a greater extent grainy and toasty. Not bad, but not really my cup of tea (beer). 3.5 M: Medium body. Good carbonation. Smooth. Average overall. 3.0 D: Decent. I’m not pissed that I drank it, but I’d rather I not have it too often. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 07-03-2009 04:53:54
3.3 G: Poured into a Nugget Nectar pint glass. A: Dark, nutty brown on the poor. Minimal whitish head. Nearly opaque in the glass. S: Slightly nutty and sweet; perhaps some molasses and a little bit of caramel. T: Malt and a bit of caramel. Hints of molasses and some hops are there. Almost tastes a bit watered down. M: Slight carbonation and light-bodied. Not terribly smooth. D: More "sessionable" than most brown ales, but I don’t know if that’s a good thing in this case--probably the least impressive brew I’ve had from Troegs.
3.0 Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a small fast disappearing off-white head. Has a roasted malty caramel aroma with some nutty hints. Roasted malty nutty caramel flavor. Has a roasted malty caramel finish.
3.6 This is a very nice sessionable brown ale. Medium body and nicely malty with nice roasted nut flavors. Well balanced, not overly sweet or too hoppy. Can I have another?
3.6 Sweet grainy malt aroma. Very dark orange color with a small tan head. Light bitter beginning with a sweet finish. Really nice brown.
3.0 12oz bottle from Half Time. Clear dark copper ale whose initially convincing head collapses swiftly. Roasted notions (akin to coffee beans lacking in torrefaction) complement the relatively shy toastiness of this nutty, gently fruity brown ale that does a fair job at integrating soft tobacco/earthy flavours with a grapey, almost juicy fruitiness that does not come without acidity. For a malt-driven ale, it remains relatively light in body and its medium-large bubbles feel a bit sloppy/gritty, lacking in tightness. In terms of flavours as well, there are interesting touches of most hints I can expect from a brown ale, but nothing stands out and the fruity juicy soft acidity does not quite round out with the roastiness. Not bad by any means, but I’ll stick to Troegs’ stunning amber ale next time.
3.0 12oz bottle. Deep brown pour with a tint of amber and very little head. Aroma of musty roasted malts and caramel. Typical brown taste -- nuts, brown sugar and syrup. Light hop notes. Comes off a little flat. Not my favorite style to begin with.
3.3 12oz bottle. Pours a ruby-brown color with a medium nutty head. Aroma is malty with dried fruits and nuts. Taste has roasted notes and malty-nutty notes. Medium bodied. Quite tasty beer and easy drinkable.
3.4 Decent beer. Brownish pour. Nose and taste of nuts, malts and some maple. Rated 4/24/03
3.5 Very mild aroma, hints of nuts and roast. Just a touch of caramel. Pours a clear reddish-brown with just a dusting of head. Crisp refreshing taste, a bit of chocolate in the finish. A solid offering, and a great session beer.
3.2 Brown pour with a small light tan head. Nutty and chocolate aroma. Nutty flavor, the body is a little watery with a cardboard aftertaste. The flavor doesn’t quite live up to the appearance and aroma.
4.2 Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a pint glass. The label lists the abv at 4.4% and there is no freshness date on it. Appearance: The body has a dark caramel brown color with reddish highlights and a tall tan head on top. The head is very long lasting and thick. It is supported by nice visible carbonation that streams up the sides of the glass. As I drink it leaves behind lots of cool lace patters. Smell: There is a nice malty aroma with toasted bready notes and sweet roasted caramel notes. Just behind that is light earthy/leafy hop presence. Taste/Palate: It is sweet overall with nice roasted and toasted character. Sweet caramel and nutty notes mix with dark chocolate and roasted coffee notes. This is then backed up in the finish with some earthy and leafy hop spice and bitterness for some balance. The body has a good medium feel with just enough carbonation to give it some life. Notes: Overall this was a very enjoyable Brown Ale with nice layers of roasted maltiness with hop backing.
3.2 A perfectly fine brown ale that is pretty representative of the style: a bit of maple syrup and very malty. Nothing wrong with this beer in particular; like many, I just am not particularly interested in the style.
4.1 pours a deep brown with little white head that fades into lacing. Smell is malty with a hint of carmel. Taste is good-malt with some chocolate and carmel-good balance and finishes clean. Mouthfeel is exceptional. Very smooth with little carbonation. The taste, mouthfeel and low alcohol content make this a very drinkable beer. This stands out to me as a superior English brown. It has a great character and good taste. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 03-29-2007 22:38:21
2.8 bottle. Pours a flat nutty brown color. Nose is light nuts and syrup with some sugary notes. Palate is medium, flat, syrupy. Flavor is sugarys and syrupy with a flat feel and some caramel notes.
3.3 Bottle. Pours clear and dark reddish brown with a small creamy almond colored head. Aroma is soft hazelnut, vanilla, caramel, and chocolate malt. Flavor is hazelnut and slight marzipan, caramel, and chocolate. Very little hop presence, but that’s ok because this isn’t overly sweet. Low carbonation and smooth, but definitely pretty thin; I wish this had a little more body to it. Some blebs of lacing remain on the glass as I drink this. Nothing groundbreaking, but this is a good brew and goes down easy.
4.0 Tröegs Rugged Trail Nut Brown Ale is a solid, dark brown ale with a thin, off white head that leaves solid sheets of lacing on the glass. It has a slightly sweet, wooden aroma that’s nutty, with a note of toffee. It has a medium-light body that’s very smooth with a slightly syrupy finish. It has a nutty, wooden flavor that’s lightly sweet and lightly bitter with notes of toffee and malt extract. It’s a very enjoyable brown ale.
