Troll Shangrila

Troll Shangrila

Shangrila was the first creation from Birrificio Troll. It is of dark amber color and has a persistent head and with its 8.5 alc./vol. it warms the palate and the heart.

Shangrila is brewed using malt, English hops and a mixture of spices from the Himalayas: tandori (Blend of coriander, cumin, garlic powder, paprika, ginger, cardamom, saffron), curry, pepper, anise. Shangrila is a complex full bodied beer with exotic scents and an intense flavor.

Shangrila is a perfect companion for meats of every type, especially ones grilled over charcoal. It also pairs very well with fine cheeses.

2.9 Nice start, but a it finishes with a strange sweet taste of candy. In goes off quickly, still not good enought
3.9 750ml bottle. Deep honey amber colour with a good sized head of sand coloured foam. Lots of spice in the aroma which is pleasant and inviting. Full in the mouth with a rich full flavour and long lasting aftertaste.
3.3 750 ml bottle courtesy of dazz3. Pours very hazy amber with a frothy offwhite head that leaves a small sticky trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet, fruity and perfume like with sweet dark bread, orange peal, grapefruit juice, mango, resinous wood, marzipan, cherries in brandy, lemon juice, dark grapes, grass and hints of pine. Taste is sweet and slightly malty with sweet dark bread, cherries, grapefruit juice, resinous wood, red apples, marzipan, red wine and grass. Mouthfeel is slightly crisp, slightly tart and light to medium bodied. Finish is slightly sour and tart with biscuits, dark grapes, wood, sour cherries, crackers and grass. Quite tart which I think adds depth to this beer.
3.1 Bottle, thanks to Dazz3. At the pretasting for USA comes to Skövde. Hazy deep golden beer with a nice offwhite head. Woody aroma, citrus, cork, cinnamon, grapes, earthy, spicy, cardamom, saffron, floral notes. Floral flavor, cinnamon, cardamom, hay, garlic, grapes, woody, earthy, grapefruit, some saffron.
3.0 Bottled. Pours hazy amber with big white. Smells sweet, abit chocolate malty and strawbarries. Tastes alcohol, dirt, strawbarry malty.
2.9 Large creamy head misty amber pour medium strong carbonation aromas herbal notes caramel tamarind lemongrass alspice the flavours lemongrass tamarind tartness pepper wild ginger taste melon sweetness slight sourness the finish mainly spice and herb taste malt not that good
3.5 Pours dark amber with a small, fading head. Noes shows sweet caramel, over-ripe bananas, faint unidentifiable spices, may some garlic. Some sweet malt transfers through as a flavour, whilst the spices remain in the background, although they are a little more pronounced than in the aroma. some alcohol shows through, along with a metallic note. Carbonation is a bit excessive.
3.3 25-Aug-12 (Slowbeer-on tap) - Rerated on 13-Dec-112 (Beer Deluxe on tap). Liked this a little more the 2nd time. Sweet Berry sherry and spice aroma. Cloudy deep brown-red colour, decent head and sheet lacing. Wine cherry strawberry mixed spice cinnamon sweet cara malt flavour. Balance of flavours dont seem to come together for me. Spicey wine light cherry malt and light mouthfeel finish and goes through to sweet tangy spice aftertaste. Not a bad thing for being different, but leans too much to a wine style for my liking. A light barley wine and quite a good try at something different.
3.2 Part of the Downtown LA Beer Crawl Italian Beer seminar led by Tomm Carroll. Big Curry and garlic note on the aroma but then really is mild tasting with no spice notes to be found. A deceptive beer unless the spice had faded more than it should have. I can see this as a real good food pairing beer.
0.9 Tap at sail and anchor Advertised as sherry barrel aged Feint nose of sugar and spices Watery palate of vermoith and sherry Awful
3.6 Bottle, 75cl, at RBNAG-11. It pours and unclear, amber body and a small, off-white head. There’s a light touch of berries on the nose, with pale malts, a faint caramel touch, something herbal and peppery, and a little bit of wood. It’s fruity and malty on the palate, warming, full-bodied and pleasantly carbonated. Berry notes, pepper and resiny hops in the flavor. Some resiny hoppy bitterness towards the end. A nice and unusual beer. 111015
3.6 750 from Tanakaya. Malty, spicy, lightly funky nose, chocolate, berries. Rather closed nose. Deep reddish brown, clear, with lace. Rich malty flavor, chocolate and caramel with spices: I notice something curry-like. Spices are not all that huge, though. Lightly fruity, cherry and orange. Nice balance, nice body, full but still light enough. Just lacking a little something to reach greatness. Opened up nicely as it warmed. A very pleasant and drinkable spice beer. Spice was stronger in the second pour, as it seems to collect in the bottom.
3.6 Süßlicher, deutlich hefiger Beginn. Angenehm herb, ab dem Mittelteil bitter werdend, hier kommt auch eine leichte Alkoholigkeit auf. Trockene und leicht Säure zum Ende, Traubennuancen. 12/11/13/11//11
3.0 Bottle at RBNAG-11. Red golden - orange colour with an off-white head. Aroma is dry, malt, fruit, apple, spices, apple. Strange OK beer.
3.0 750 ml bottle @ RBNAG-11. Hazy amber/orange body with a small off-white head. Strange aroma of ripe (close to rotten) fruit and perfume, as strange as it might sound – not really unpleasant, just weird. Flavor is strange as well, overripe/rotten fruit, spices, some malt and apple cider. Medium body. Very unusually and probably not by intention, still not undrinkable and I think it’s becoming more like a mix of a spicy saison and well matured apple cider. Would really like to try it as it was intended to be.
Buona buona!
3.8 Spicy and sour, very clean, mild hop finish. Citrus and pepper with cinnamon. Aged in J.W.Lees Harvest Ale Calvados cask.
1.8 Shared bottle @RBNAG-11. Low greyish head. Hazed anber body. Smell of yellow fruits overpowered by aceton and higher alcohols. Sharp alcohol infused malts. Astringent mouthfeel. Not good.
1.4 15.10.2011. 0,75l Bottle. Dark golden brown colour with white head. This beer must be infected by something. Its both sweet and sour, and there is lots of alcohol! I cant decide wether its rothen fruit or nail polish remover.
3.2 Bottle 750ml @ RBNAG-11 Pours cloudy deep orange with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, dried fruits, caramel and yeast. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
3.4 0.75l bottle @ RBNAG11. Pours a light clouded pale orange body with a small bubbly sidesticking head. The aroma is light peachy, tones of alcohol, apples, light sweet and some pineapple. Average carbonation level and a oily mouthfeel. Some distinct tones of alcohol in the flavor, caramel, dry tannin-tones and some light sour hints in the light spicy finish. Strange stuff, and I’m not really sure what to think of it.
1.4 Shared bottle at RBNAG 11 @ Haandverkerstuene, Oslo. Hazy nougat brown body, small white head. Nose is caramel, booze, raisins and hints of yeast. Nail polish, nuts and alcoholic yeasty tones. Strange, chemical-like and definitely not good. Some extra points for originality, though, keep on trying Italy! :-P
2.6 Shared bottle at the RBNAG-11 grand tasting. Hazy, orange with an off-white creamy rim. Honey, spices, fruits and perfume on the nose. Sweet, bitter and acidic flavors with notes of grains and alcohol. Full bodied, alco warm and a dry tongue.
2.6 Shared bottle at RBNAG 2011. Amber colour. Moderate perfumed aroma, hints of acetone. Some malts in the flavour, bready notes, a slight acidity. Not impressive.
2.5 Bottle, RBNAG. Amber beer, a bit hazy. Sweet, short body. Probably infected.
2.4 Shared bottle at RBNAG-11. Pours amber with a small head. Aroma of farmyard and shoe polish. Taste is raw alcohol, sweet malts and cinnamon.
3.4 75cl bottle. Red golden orange colour with a medium big head. Some faint fruity aromas and alcohol. Flavour is sweet with some bitter notes. Also alcohol, peach, malts. Short aftertaste.
2.4 Bottle. Pours golden with an off-white head. Aroma of nailpolish remover, malt and fruitines. Flavor is sweet and malty. Medium body, average carboantion.
3.3 Bottle sampled on 3/12/11: Pours a clear deep copper with a small-bubbled froth of off-white head. Has a lightly sweet biscuity and light caramel nose with a touch of cinnamon. Starts with decent fullness and some sweet caramel maltiness with a good balance of unique spices and light oxidation before a drier smooth finish. A pretty unique brew.
3.0 Bottle, argo0 tasting. Amery-orange with an eggshell head. Honey and all-spice in the aroma and some light grapes. Nutmeg, spice, cinnamon, and an very odd flavor overall. Too many things going on here in a not great way. Lighter body.
