RED EYE Coffee porter is one of a series of special limited run beers in styles that are more EXTREME or unusual.
Porter’s an elusive dark ale that has been constantly changing during its long 300 year history.
We figured it was about RIPE for some REINVENTION.

2.9Bottle. Pours a cloudy amber with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong roast, dark chocolate and coffee. Thin mouthfeel with sweet roast and chocolate with light bitterness. Decent.
3.7rich and smooth with a nice coffee and malt combination of flavor. some alcohol and a bit of hop near the end.
3.622oz bottle in a tulip. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of coffee, roasted malts, chocolate, and some dough. Flavor the same. Average texture. A pretty good beer.
3.6Not a bad beer. I thnk the coffee has faded a fair bit but it is still evident. The abv is extremely well integrated and unoticeable. The porter is rich and chocolatey but lacking a little something.
3.6bomber, shared with friends, a great strong coffee flavor, some thick molasses type richness, not great on drinkability however
3.6Bomber to snifter (shared with alexsdad06 and jmborggren). Looks good; a mostly opaque dark coffee with light beige lacing. Smells solid; dark malt and chocolate with a semi-sweet backbone and some roast. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. Enjoyable.
3.4Bottle shared at the Coffee District. Dark brown pour with a kaki head. Caramel and coffee aromas. Rye, bitter watery black coffee. Below average mouthfeel and body.
3.8Black in color with brown hues and a light brown head, this has a smooth, rich and chocolaty aroma that has only a touch of coffee. It’s very classy, and super awesome. Smooth in the mouth, as well, with a great, easy feel on the palate. Yet, it delivers some really awesome, classy rich, roasted, and homogeneous. Yummers. Super sessionable for the content and ABV.
3.7Appearance dark brown with aslight tan head aroma slight flavor of coffee. Taste slight taste of coffee lingers on the palate
3.7From a 22 oz bottle shared at home. Pours black with a tan head. Mild roasted malt aroma. Creamy mouth feel with moderate carbonation. Coffee is quite subdued. Hop notes dominate. Tasty, though.
4.1Pours black with a half finger tan head that dissipates. Very complex nose, toffee, licorice, plumb, milk chocolate. Complexity moves on to the tongue, just a lot of roasty malts bringing out a lot of flavor. Nice toffee and plumb aftertaste. Medium bodied beer, alcohol is well hidden, and went down velvety smooth. This was not what I was expecting at all, and I have to say this was a pleasant surprise.
4.5Sweet loving, this is some amazing stuff. One of the best beers I’ve ever had (out of a bottle) and would love to snag again. An extremely roasty brew with a tart espresso finish and notes of plums, chocolate, coffee, and dark grains. Absolutely stunning.
2.6651mL thanks to one of my bros in a trade. I think my secret santa. Pours clear, deep brown to black. A high gravity pour generates a medium, tan head. Good formation. Weak retention and little lace. Nose is blue Kool - Aid burst, moving to green coffee like jalapeños. Taste is sweet, boozy, sticky, very sugary. No coffee flavor and no balancing hoppiness. Did they forget to bitter this beer? Whoops.
3.6Bonus beer courtesy of markwise. The 22oz bomber pours pretty dark with a thin tan head of foam. The aroma is sweet and a little earthy rolling into dark roasted malts and black licorice. The taste delivers some sweet malts mixed with dark roasted coffee and a bit of spicy black licorice. The mix of coffee and sweetness is pretty nice.
3.122 oz bottle @ home. Almost black color. Quickly receding beige head. Aroma’s: coffee, but not strongly roasted, hints of fruit (berries?), malty sweetness retronasal. Flavor is (medium) sweet, somewhat herbal, laurel/drop. Body is actually on the thin side. Finishes sweet, roasted and finally lightly bitter.
2.9Deep brown with a thin tan head. Has smokey, licorice aroma, much lighter on the coffee than expected, and light on the scent in general. Flavor is light sweet to light bitter finish. The beer is more watery than it looked when pouring. I had higher hopes on account of liking other beers from two brothers and dark coffee beers, but this one is just okay.
3.322oz bottle .. . pours a deep brown .. . medium foam .. lacing is decent .. . this has coffee in it? quite a light porter and not alot of depth .. . that guy’s name is Dick? .. how appropriate....
3.7The beer pours basically black with a medium sized tan head with no real lace. The head doesn’t stick around too long really.
The aroma is plenty of chocolate and coffee, the beer is sweet smelling. For the most part it smells like rich dark chocolate and a little bit like coffee, it’s a pretty inviting bouquet.
The flavor is no where near as sweet as the aroma would have us believe. The coffee flavor is dominant, and it tastes like fancied coffee for sure. The dark chocolate character is strong in the flavor as well and between that and the coffee the bitterness level on the beer is very pleasant. The dark fruit character is mild and some light toffee shows through as it warms/opens up/whatever. I had no clue that this was as strong as it is, pretty much drinks like a normal porter. The alcohol is very well concealed.
The palate is a tad thin but carried well across the palate by the low carbonation.
3.6bottle: Tasty roasted malts. Dark chocolate and dark malts. Coffee roast and some umami notes. dry finish.
3.5Found this one bottled in a bomber bottle from Binny’s in St. Charles, Illinois.
3.5Tap at Beer Authority, Manhattan - 28/05/12.
Very rich dark brown with a thin tan head.
Sweet coffee, earthy hops and a little alcohol whiff.
Milk choclate and coffee in the taste, a little booze and roasted malt.
Higher end of medium bodied, a little over carbonated, sweet finish.
3.7Roasted malts, slight hop aroma. Draft, little to no head, what was there was off white tan. The beer is surprisingly light body. Good coffee porter, but too light body.
3.6Bottle from Lakeview Liquors. A well integrated coffee oriented beer even for a non coffee drinker. Good roasted malt, choice and use of chocolate with an anise kiss. Above average mouthfeel, great drinkability.
3.0Poured from a bomber into a tulip glass. Pours a dark brown with a quickly diminishing head of light brown foam. Aromas consist of some coffee, soy sauce, sweet malt, and some light chocolate. Taste is a strong hearty sweetness with a roasty character that is just odd. Although the roasty notes should be good here, they seem out of place. Can’t get into this one.
3.822 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating but this was pretty recent(15th anniversary bottling). Pours pitch black color with a dense 1-2 finger tan head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some good lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of chocolate, coffee beans, roasted malt, caramel, toast, biscuit, molasses, light herbal, and light nuttiness. Pretty nice and balanced aromas; but are not nearly as strong as I was expecting. Taste of milk chocolate, roasted malt, biscuit, toast, caramel, nuttiness, coffee, molasses, and herbal spiciness. Light spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, biscuit, molasses, nuttiness, toast, coffee, and herbal on the finish for a good bit. Nice robust and balanced flavor profile with minimal cloying sweetness; but not nearly as much coffee flavor as I was expecting. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very good imperial porter. Nice robust flavor and balance; and very easy to drink. Nowhere near worthy of being called a coffee porter; but still a very enjoyable beer.
3.722 oz bottle. Not sure how old it is. Pours the standard dark almost-black with tan head. Pretty solid, but not a ton of overt coffee in it.
4.6A very good coffee porter, not overwhelming sweet, not too bitter. An even balance of the chocolate malts and sweet acidic coffee aftertaste. Pours black as night, thick tan head. Tried with Vaughn and Josh in Lawrence in 2012.
4.022oz bottle (2012 retro release 1 of 15). Nice thin light brown head, leaving some lace. Clear black color. Lots of particles in the second pour. Awesome chewy texture. Big body. Light carbonation. Excellent rich coffee taste; milk. Light milk chocolate, oats; very delicious aroma. Nice bittersweet taste. Good long coffee aftertaste. Very easy to drink -- I didn’t realize it was an imperial porter until I looked at the label. Really, a delicious beer - one of those I am glad to have a whole bomber of, rather than just a 12oz. Totally sublime, excellent breakfast beer
3.2Bomber pours dark brown/black with a medium tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, and fruits. Taste is slight soy followed my coffee and chocolate malt. Decent but not amazing or unique.
3.8I’m glad this is a red eye and not a brown eye. Draft. Dark maroon color, thick tan head, solid lacing. Aroma of nuts and toast. Taste is fiamy cafe macchiato. Nice.
