Brewer Benji’s farewell beer. An imperial porter. Big, black and smokey. Rich full-bodied with a silky chocolate crown. Dark roasted flavors host the smokey character of wood-fired malt while chipotle peppers add a smoldering tickle of heat.

3.4(retrieved from 08/2013 Midwest jpg backlog). 12oz bottle bought & sampled in Milwaukee/WI Very mild and drinkable execution of a potentially wild recipe: dominant milk chocolate and mild caramel flavours, not getting all that much heat, nor smoke apart from a slight earthy edge that could be anything really and a prickly effervescence. Could tilt either way depending on mood, receptacle, atmospheric temperature, company, aging...
4.0Pours a deep brown almost black with tan head. Smoke, pepper, cocoa, and coffee on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a little heat from the peppers. Pretty interesting.
4.5Very balanced porter with an excellently smoky aftertaste. This is a great dessert beer and it is a good example of the quality of the entire Brewers Gone Wild series.
3.5Poured from a 12 ounce bottle, thanks to clownoisseur. The aroma is caramel maltiness, soft smoke. The flavor is chocolate, caramel sweetness, malty, hint its smoke. I do not get anything in the way of spicy peppers. Not bad.
4.1Year old bottle. Brown pour, black body with a small ring of tan head. The aroma is stout-like...heavy roast, chocolate. As it warms it releases some smoke and chili pepper notes. There is also a touch of fig, but I think that might be attributed to oxidation. The flavor has all the same elements. It starts out rich and roasty, then the smoke flavor builds, and finally, it finishes more abrupt than expected with a nice lingering pepper flavor and heat. Full, rich mouthfeel, soft carbonation, and great flavor.
4.0Pours very dark black, almost no head. Has a chocolaty chili smell. Nice robust flavor. Taste of smoked chocolate coffee. Not any spice from the chipolte, just smokeyness. Wish it didn’t have a twist top. This is a nice beer and should be better sealed.
3.7The beer pours black as night with a dark mocha one finger head. Small tight bubbles. The aroma is smoke forward. However there is a very present dark chocolate smell. The chocolate almost smells bitter. Definite hints of roast on the aroma. Mild carbonation on the front of the tongue. Hit with the smoke right away. Moves thinly across the palate. Maybe a hint of dark fruit mixed with a hop bitterness. That rolls into a decent dark bitter chocolate finish that beckons another sip. Maybe a slight hint of the pepper on the finish. Alright overall, body could have been bigger. No hint of the alcohol.
3.8Bottle, as pictured. Dark brown opaque pour. Smells sweet with some spices - chocolate, cinnamon, clove. Taste is similar with a little tiny bit of peppery heat in the finish. Not at all spicy, but you can feel the pepper. Smooth mouthfeel, nice beer.
3.8Dark brown color with tan head. Nice chocolate, smoked meat, dark roast, chili pepper aromas. Smooth medium body. Chocolate, smokey, dark roast flavors with earthy dirt, and mild chili peppers---very good
3.4Nose is common porter sweet and malty. Dark rich chocolate with tan foamy head. Tast is best with toasty smokey malts with reliable pepper heat on finish with each sip. Very well established. Palate is soft. Overall pretty great, bought another pack strait away.
3.6Bottle. Mild chocolate malt and light smoky aroma. Dark brown with moderate tan head. Sweet chocolate malt and mild smoky chipotle flavor. Tasty and smooth.
3.5Got this in a trade from madbeerbaron. You’re the man! Pours a very dark brown color with ruby glints at the bottom edge of the glass. A two-finger dark taupe head forms, but fades to half a finger relatively quickly. Big aromas of coffee, smoke, cream, and fig. Mouthfeel is a bit less viscous than it seemed to pour. In fact, it seems to deflate on the palate. The flavor is pretty fun. Fresh chili, lactose, fig, and even some capsaicin burn before the finish. Finishes with some mild tartness. I love the flavor of this one.
3.8Pours black, with a thin, dark tan head.
Aroma is smoked meat, pepper, chocolate.
Taste is chalky, ashy, chocolate roast.
Not heavy...very subdued chile spicing.
Wonderful taste.
Nicely done.
3.8Let me begin by saying that Tyranena is my favorite Wisconsin brewery. BGW pours motor oil black with a slight tan head. Smokiness, just a hint of pepper and earthy chocolate flavors dominate. Very well balanced with no dominating characteristic. If I could change anything, I would prefer a little higher ABV. But in the end I can drink more of them with its current level.
4.0Dark brown with a thin creamy brown head. Chocolate, smokey hickory, earthy and a hint of roasted pepper. Flavor is moderately sweet with slight bitterness that follows. The body is heavier with a chalky feel. Quite tasty, was hoping for just a little more chipotle spiciness though. The peppers came through in the aroma, but not in flavor.
4.3Purchased at Breeze Thru Liquors in Wauwatosa, WI; enjoyed at home watching the Blackhawks Stanley Cup Final 4th game. Really enjoying this series from Tyranena, have liked every BGW I’ve had, this is no exception. Appearance is a dark pitch black, moderate consistency, light tan head that rims around the glass. Aroma of chocolate, light smoke, a previous review states molasses and it does smell like it. Taste is superb, has a nice bitter chocolate / espresso quality with a light burn from the chipotle peppers, there is something decadent about this brew, but it’s not very rich. Great stuff!
3.8Dark brown with thin light brown head that lasts. Aroma is roasty, chipotle, touch of chocolate. Flavor matches with chipotle front and center with a roasty and light chocolate & wood finish. Body is lighter side of medium. Mild chipotle burn. Normal sized balls.
3.7sweet, malty, chipotle, brown sugar, roasty aroma.
Strong malt taste, a little spicy chipotle underneath. smooth and sweet. A little chocolate. A slight burning going down.
4.5Pours like a black nectar with a thin tan head. Nose is coffee and molasses. Very creamy and thick mouthfeel. The taste is full bodied and of dark roasted malt, coffee and molasses. Chipolte is well hidden. An excellent porter that pairs well with red meat off the grill especially game, including bear, venison and moose.
3.7Bottle - thanks madbeerbaron! Pours opaque deep brown with a small brown head that dissipates with some lacing. Aroma is coffee, cigarettes, light smoke. Flavor is the same, lightly sweet, light bitter, with just a touch of chili burn on the finish. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel.
3.912oz bottle .. . pours a deep brown black .. mild frothy head, spots of good lacing .. . mild spice level .. deep roast, light smoke, and charcoal .. . enjoyable beer .. . . get those reports to me right meow!
3.6Pours dark brown with some red in it. Smell is malty with a little spice to it taste is good in it’s a very good Porter does a little bit of the chipotle comes thru but mainly malt. I thought it would be a more experimental brew, but the smokiness and the pepper add a subtle presence and complexity that makes it a solid porter.
3.5Not really picking much in terms of the pepper smell, it’s pretty faint. Smoke smell also not that obvious. Taste is slightly smokey, more roasted malts than anything else though. Having a tough time finding any peppers in this beer, but it does seem to have a bit of a peppery note to it.
2.812 oz bottle pours dark brown with a tan head. Aromas of peppers and coffee. Roasted malts coffee and spicy pepper taste.
3.9Deep dark brown pour with a light tan head. Malty and chocolate aroma. Smokey and peppery notes with a pretty damn good flavor. Much enjoyable.
3.7On tap. Sweet, full mouthfeel with a perfect level of smokiness. I honestly could not detect any chipotle at all in this, but it’s still a very good smoked porter.
3.712 oz. bottle courtesy of Queenholly. Deep brown color with tiny white head. Nose is nice. Heavy roasted chocolate malts with a tad bit of pepper zest. Initial flavor starts with rich roasted malt followed by a light smoke. After the mild smoke you can pick up just a hint of chipotle. The finish comes with more roasted malt. Body is stout like and leaning on the full side. I paired this with my chicken enchilada dinner and it worked really well. I was happily surprised by this brew. Real quaffable.
4.0Pours a dark black color with no head. Nose is chocolate and spicy with some pleasant sweetness. Taste is spicy chocolate with a strong malt and some subtle pepper. Carbonation is soft and texture heavy. Finish is moderately long and ends with a chocolate spicy finish. Quaff Score 8 / 10
3.8Pours black with a brown head and aroma of roasted malt. Taste is smokey and spicy, of roasted malt, chocolate, and chipotle with a spicy, dry, finish. Very drinkable, tasty brew
3.9tap at Dash In - Pours near black and smells of roast malt, chocolate, and peppers. It has a very roasty flavor with smoke and a touch of pepper spice. Full bodied with soft carbonation, it finishes with roasted bitterness and smoke. Very good.
