4.5Pours black like oil with just a small amount of khaki colored head. Coffee, bourbon, oak, and chocolate on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with cocoa and coffee, very smooth.
3.8really coffee flavored and bitter finish slightly chocolately and easy to drink. smells chocaoltey had this opne at bad apple on a draft pout. balck in color witha tan head.
4.0Bottle as a trade extra from I forget who. Thanks! Pours dark brown to black with some light showing through on the pour but not in the glass, with a small khaki brown head. Huge earthy spicy coffee aroma, sweet lactose and chocolate. Flavor is a rush vanilla coffee combo, very smooth and decadent, without the harsh coffee spice. Wow this is very smooth. Not much bourbon, just a hint of oakiness. Medium bodied and very silky, low plus carbonation, lasting chocolate coffee finish on the tongue. Very nice.
4.0Bottle - Pours dark brown/black w/ tan head. Hints of vanilla, oak, oatmeal, and bourbon in the nose. Rich chocolate flavor and a nice oatmeal feel on the palate. Very smooth overall!!!
4.012 oz bottle shared by huhzubendah, thanks Matt. Pours a clear dark caramel brown. Nearly headless, just a tiny wisp appears when swirled. Aroma leapt out of the bottle into my nose. Chocolate malt, sweet malts, coffee, and the caramelly complexity of bourbon. Flavor is porter roastiness, chocolate, caramel, nutty coffee and a smooth bourbon finish. This tastes bigger than 8%, nicely done. Sweet caramel aftertaste, thin to medium mouthfeel. Solid.
2.2Overall mine was flat, not a good start. Decent flavor albeit it a bit hot. Finish was thin and mostly just alcohol.
3.8Dark red/brown pour. Nose is dark fruits, chocolate, bourbon. Taste is chocolate, barrel, dark fruits. Medium mouthfeel.
4.0Bottle from Discount Liquors in Milwaukee.
Served alongside the standard version.
Similar appearance to the non barrel-aged version. Dark brown with a quarter inch of beige cap that leaves sparse lacing. Nice aroma, with everything present in the original, not overpowered by bourbon. A touch of oak and light, but present bourbon. Gentle sweetness. Sweet, powerful bourbon dancing with fresh, bitter coffee beans. Delightful. Well done.
4 pack $8.49 - great price for such a high quality beer
3.812 oz bottle thanks to Bacterial. Dark pour with brown head that shows up just for a moment before dissipating. Prominent coffee in the aroma that takes center stage. Chocolate falls into line in the mouth, along with artificial vanilla and residual sweetness. Full body, syrupy, thick texture, above average carbonation. Overall: tasty brew!
4.012 ounce bottle. Thanks Al. Pours black with a decent tan head. Aroma of coffee, malt, and chocolate. Taste is coffee, roasted malt, dark chocolate, vanilla, and some bourbon. Very well balanced. Will look for this one again!
4.4Exceptional BA Imperial Porter. Has a creamy mouthfeel - stays light whilst pouring almost as a dessert style beer. Aroma is vanilla bean and mocha. An outstanding beer with chewy oats and a warm bourbon barrel afterglow. This is excellent, from the opening of the bottle to the last sip.
4.2This puppy is a full dessert. Thick black pour from draft at farmhouse in Evanston. Huge toffee and Carmel aroma. Scotch smell too. Taste is massive. Coffee, chocolate, toffee and milky. Love this one. Haven't liked many other from this brewery. Score
3.6Pre-DLD bottle share at Hampton Inn. Pour is deep brown with a small beige head. Aroma and flavor of bakers chocolate, roasted malt, coffee grounds, and slight bourbon warmth. Finish is bourbon and chocolate malt.
3.8Pours dark with a whisp of tan head. Aroma of black coffee, vanilla beans, and roast. Taste of fresh brewed coffee, vanilla, oatmeal, and just the right amount of barrel. Good brew.
4.1Bottle shared thanks to beerman6686. Nice to break up the barleywines with this one. Pours a dark brown with a slight tan head. Aroma is huge black coffee. None of that green pepper stuff. Taste is slightly sweet up front but finishes on the dry side and bitter. Not a ton of barrel spirits come past the coffee even with the 60% blend.
3.9Great smelling beer with a wonderful coffee, chocolate and slight bourbon taste. Only complaint is that it poured completely flat and gave it a weird mouthfeel. Otherwise great beer
4.0draft. An imperial porter that really retains its coffee characterl despite the barrel aging.
3.8Dark brown body spews handsome tan head. Decadent chocolate & roasty aroma bleeds onto the palate. Barrels massage the overall profile just enough to introduce themselves without stealing the spotlight. Creamy oatmeal body pairs nicely.
Quite impressive overall. Dare I say I prefer this to Breakfast Stout?!
4.5Aroma of coffee and a little smoke. Small dark tan head. Great complexity of chocolate coffee and bourbon.
Medium mouthfeel.
Amazing beer.
4.0Bottle. Deep brown with a tan ring. Vanilla, oatmeal, roasted malt, bourbon and oak. Taste is malty sweet with an alcohol aftertaste. Body is heavier with an oily feel
4.1Poured from a bottle. I wish they would go to pop top caps. Dark medium viscosity body. Huge coffee aroma. I thought the taste was a little mild, but very drinkable. Then I realized it was a porter not a stout so the heavy roasted sweetness missing is normal. Pretty good. Could really l easily drink a lot of this.
4.4Bottle from Discount in Milwaukee served at fridge temperature - very excited to see this one was re-released after 4-5 years! Pours inky black with a bit of a foamy tan head leaving spots of lace. Aroma has all bakers chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Lovely! Rich and decadent. Taste is of sweet cocoa, bitter espresso, bakers chocolate, some espresso and some vanilla. Medium to full bodied and lovely in the choco/coffee/vanilla blend (2 parts and 2 parts to 1). Finishes with some length, and slightly more sweet than bitter, with the chocolate/vanilla slightly passing the bakers chocolate & espresso components. This is very nice! As a note, a cellar temp version did not impress quite as much. Tyranena SO does porters!! This one is a great option to cellar for a while, but not sure I’ll be able to not drink what is left; going to need to find another 4 pack ....
4.036cl, as Tyranena Brewers Gone Wild! ’Devil Over a Barrel’, exclusive American brew, with coffee, thx alot to Koen for bringing this over!, complex Porter, malty/roasted and slightly alcoholic/sweet/woody, yet not too heavy, very balanced, cloudy, small head, very good brew
4.1The appearance is of a typical imperial porter or stout - dark and inky with a very slight foam where the top of the pour meets the glass. The aroma has clear coffee notes as well as whiffs of raisin, nut and caramel. The taste is very nice, following on the same sensations of the aroma (coffee, caramel, a toasted nutty flavor and a hint of vanilla) and is very nice. The coffee especially is present at the back of the tongue on the finish of a sip. Mouth-feel/palate is again very typical of a good imperial porter, not overly thick, but it has a lot more texture than a lighter beer. This is a very nice beer, which I’m thankful a friend brought back from WI for me to enjoy here in California.
4.212 oz bottle. Nice coffee and mocha aroma. Taste is brownies with a touch of espresso. Bourbon notes are very subtitle. Balanced and easy to drink. Might be the only bourbon stout I could pound.
4.0Thin black pour with some tan head. Lots of tan lacing. Huge coffee nose with some bourbon undertones. Mouthfeel is a bit on the thin side, but fine for a porter (maybe thin for an imperial porter?). Tons of flavor. Coffee, toffee, vanilla and bourbon. Yum.
4.3Beautiful aroma of chocolate and oatmeal and coffee. Taste is similar, a slight sweet, bitter finish.
3.6Black pour, medium tan head
Aroma is coffee, dark and bakers chocolate and oats. Light Oakley vanilla.
Flavour is coffee right off the bat. Chocolate covered espresso beans.
Oily oat mouthfeel. Roasted malt, vanilla, woody hop bitterness in finish.
Very little bourbon for me.
4.3Brownish black pour with huge fluffy tan head. Nose is fantastic! Huge fresh, ashy/smokey coffee, brown sugar and bourbon with light vanilla. Flavor is more fresh smokey coffee, light bourbon, roasted malt, light vanilla sweetness. Silky smooth oat character with lingering light, sweet bourbon and coffee. All flavors well-melded. Dig the fact that this was not 100% barrel-aged. Made flavors more nuanced and appreciable.
4.1Bottle. Dark pour with a small head. Awesome coffee and subtle bourbon in this, plus some roast malt. This is fantastic.
