3.7 Sampled at Slutfest 4 - Sexytime! Dark brown pour with ring of tan head. Malty roasty and hint of marshmellow and molasses. Sweet and semi whiskey note, but totally smooth. Pretty good.
3.7 Pours black, brown at edges. Aroma is lightly of chocolate and coffee. Flavor is similar. Bit of vanilla on the finish. Just a touch rough. But not bad at all.
4.1 Smells like whiskey. No bite, very smooth. Well balanced for a barrel aged beer. Woody smell in the aroma.
3.8 12oz bottle thanks to demmbonz Appearance: Black with a small dark tan head and good lacing Aroma: Roasted malts, bourbon, chocolate and woody Taste: Roasted malts, chocolate, whiskey and spices (rye) Very nice and smooth
3.8 Bottle @ home, courtesy of a serious fucken a bro extra via womencantsail. Thanks bra! Pours a deep brown appearance with little head. Rich toffee, dark chocolate, caramel, a bit woody, whiskey nose. A touch fruity, thick dark chocolate, smooth toffee, sweet caramel malty, whiskey flavor that’s easily to drink and very smooth.
4.1 Old rating from 2010. Pours super dark opaque black/brown with almost no head just a little tan ring. Big rye barrel nose, sweet dark malt, coconut. Less rye barrel in the taste, lots of sweet dark malt with a dry finish. Medium body with nice fine carbonation...a smooth drinker.
3.6 12 oz. bottle. Pours a thin rapidly dissipating, beige head, over a clear, very dark brown (SRM 35) body....nose is light Whiskey, chocolate, light coffee, hints of vanilla.....taste is light Whiskey, chocolate, rye spice, medium lingering toffee/caramel sweetness, finishing with a moderate hop, roasted malt bitterness....mouth feel medium, soft, slightly chewy, mildly astringent, alcohol hidden, carbonation adds light tingle. This is a well balanced beer. The Whiskey barrels were used with a light hand, and add depth rather than dominating. The malts are deftly used with the heavy chocolate, cocoa tones offset by minor coffee at the finish. The rye adds that bit of mysterious complexity. The only flaw is the moderate, but lingering sweetness. This is a lovely beer. BJCP 8/3/14/4/7
3.5 12oz bottle, thanks to alexdad06 for sharing. Aged at least a few years in his cellar, I believe. Black / dark red but clear color. Good thin brown head. Some dots of lace. Nice mild whiskey nose. Medium body, a bit thinner than I’d expect for an 8% porter. Very light carbonation, and dry texture. Flavor is a little light for what this is described as. Mild toasty malts, some light chocolate malt, little wood barrel, not as much whiskey as I expected in the flavor, more subtle, but still noticeable. I feel like the flavor may have fallen off a bit, but it’s still a solid, enjoyable imperial porter. Light bittersweet, alcohol not really noticeable. It’s a very unique flavor and texture for the style, never really had anything like this that I can think of.
3.6 12 ounce bottle shared by gillard, thanks Ryan! Poured a dark brown almost black color with aromas of coffee, chocolate, booze, light vanilla and some whiskey. Flavors follow suit bit highly oxidized. I wish I had this bottle in its prime could have been better. Even with the oxidation it was still a solid beer.
3.5 Bottle from trade with Crajun. Pours very dark brown in color with almost no head. Aroma is mostly whiskey booze and caramel. Hints of sweet cream and nuts too. Taste is slightly sweet and the flavors are subtle. Whiskey taste is out in front and the finish brings cream, chocolate, and caramel out. Fairly thin mouthfeel and slick. Overall, pretty good but a tad boring.
4.0 Poured from a 12 ounce bottle thanks to my secret santa. Pours a darker brown with a thin beige cap of foam. Aroma is very malt forward with some nuts and spice coming through. The barrel isn’t coming through near as strongly as I anticipated. It does peak out from hiding in the finish, though. Solid.
3.8 Dark brown with a paperthin head. Aroma of whiskey, caramel malt. Taste is malty and slightly sweet. Very smooth and tasty.
3.7 12/24/12. 12oz bottle thanks to cbfobes! Deep brown pour with a nice tan head that cuts and laces a bit. Lots of cocoa with more chocolate, some coffee, cream, and a touch of booziness. Lightly sweet chocolate entry with a boozy touch of whiskey but not a ton of complex barrel character. Lingering roasty dryness with more chocolate. Not bad!
3.9 Dark black pour. no head. medium to full thickness. bourbon, oak, smoke, licorice. nice and smooth. very good.
3.7 12 ounce bottle. Pours almost black with a small tan head. Aroma of roast, coffee, chocolate, and whiskey. Taste is roasted malt, whiskey, coffee, chocolate, and wood. Very nice.
3.8 December 13, 2012 bottle from binnys. Very dark brown pour with nice amount of head. Aroma was coffee, spice/rye, whiskey and wood. Coffee and spice seem to dominate taste with just a hint of the whiskey. Finish was a little bit thin though.
4.2 12 oz bottle courtesy of elkhunter. Thanks. Pours a dense black-brown color with a minimal beige head that quickly morphs into a fine ring around the glass. The aroma is murky with licorice, chocolate and molasses. The flavor is similar to the nose, chocolates, raisins, plums, mocha and a touch of anise. The palate is full and creamy smooth with soft carbonation. Finishes long and dry with lingering dark bitter chocolates. Overall: Top shelf.
4.1 Bottle - pours jet black with a cola brown head that leaves a creamy sheet of foam on the glass when consumed. Has a roasty malt flavor and some mocha chocolate overtones. Has a cream body and mouthfeel. Excellent!
4.1 12oz bottle poured into an imperial pint glass. Pours black with a small light brown head that fades quickly leaving little lacing. Huge aroma with a lot going on, (maybe too much). Rye, oak, whiskey, roasted malts, coffee, vanilla and chocolate. Taste is strong rye up front with a very malty base. The whiskey barrel adds a huge character to this, bringing a smoky vanilla and caramel blend to the taste. You can definitely taste the oak and the whiskey, but neither overwhelms. This is a very complex brew! Finishes with a smoky coffee and chocolate taste, and the unmistakable slightly bitter whiskey burn. Thick and creamy palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. A fine sipping after dessert beer. Would go well with a good cigar.
4.2 Bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown nearly black with a small lasting brown head. Aromas of roastiness, dark chocolate, rye, oak, carmel and light whiskey. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of roastiness, oak, dark chocolate, rye, light carmel and light whiskey with a smooth lingering roasty chocolate finish.
4.6 Black color with no light, very little head noted. Aroma is a beautiful whiskey barrel with very mild rosted malts. Mild smokiness. You can really taste the whiskey in the barrel. One of the best barrel aged beers I have tasted thusfar. Mouthfeel is very heavy for a porter, a GREAT thing!
3.4 Pours black. Dense brown head that rapidly fades. Nose is bitter black chocolate, evident caramel malts, some nutty or toasted malt character as well. Flavor is where the whiskey barrel shines. Again roasted malts with some coffee, vanilla, wood, and liquor-like flavors come through. Butter finish. Medium body for the style and slightly oily mouthfeel. Good flavorful beer but to me this lacks a little but of complexity and richness. Enjoyed it either way.
4.2 Has some major whiskey and chocolate scents. The taste is similar, but with a little hint of smoke. Body is super smooth and has a great mouth feel. One of the best beers I have had in quite a while.
3.4 Bottle 2009. Brown black pour with minimal head. Aroma of chocolate and lots of bourbon and toffee, a little soy oxydation. Taste of liquorich chocolate, bourbon and some ginger. Palate is a little too flat, probably due to aging. Decent.
3.6 Bottle shared by Thorpe429 for Matt’s baby shower tasting. Thanks! The beer is dark brown, approaching black, with a thin, tan head. The aroma offers roast, bourbon, sweet malt, booze, brown sugar, and oak. The beer is sweet, with a healthy whiskey presence throughout. The body is thinner than expected, with moderately low carbonation. Overall, a decent brew. If the body was a bit thicker and the flavor less sweet, I would enjoy it more. 3.9 Pours nearly black with a brown cap. Scent is chocolate, roasted, rye. Taste is chocolate/coffee....creamy. Good barrel tones. Very nice porter...
4.0 Bottle at home - 08/06/12 thanks to Sam for an IP trade in Denver. Pours a very dark brown approaching black but with reddish hues when held to light and with a dirty tan head. Dark malts, chocolate, molasses on the nose and a whiff of whiskey. Tastes of burnt caremalised sugars, malt, chocolate and licquorice. A well balanced beer with a fullish body but very drinkable.
4.3 Poured from a bottle into a Sam Adams glass. Dark brown, completely opaque. Nice light brown foam that dissolves to a ring and some film. Minimal lacing. Smell is rich chocolate, roasted malt and bourbon. Taste is up from roasted malt. Nice caramel, vanilla and bourbon. Very light alcohol towards the end. Kind of a chocolate finish. Palate is thick and creamy. Light carbonation. Nice. Overall outstanding beer. Wonderful flavors throughout.
4.1 Dark bown-black color with tan head. Light carbination Aroma of caramel, coffee, and roated nuts, slight smokey. Taste is bitter with a sweet undetone, very small sour noted. Overall very good.
3.7 Acquired this in a trade. Enjoyed at fridge temp in a Duvel tulip. A - Poured a viscous oily liquid into the glass. No head at all. Pitch black. S - Coffee, vanilla and smoke up front. Very Peety. Hints of rye whiskey. T - Wow.Lots of roasted / toasted malted barley. Very nice nutty sort of taste. Smooth with hints of chocolate and espresso beans. Finish is very much like a rye whiskey but without the heat and burn in my chest I was expecting. M - 40% carbonation on mouth swish. Medium to heavy body. O - This is suprisingly enjoyable. I think because it’s an 8% porter in barrels that it has all of the nice flavors I’d like but none of the ones I don’t. Nice stuff.
