3.4 Very dark brown, almost black, with thin brown lacing. Roasted coffee beans, chocolate, caramel, some vanilla, and toasted malt. A bit too sweet, strong lactose taste. Smooth but thin, not quite full-bodied. Small alcohol presence in the coffee-filled finish.
3.7 October 26, 2013 - bottle shared by Jared at Darkness.day. Dark brown pour with some head. Bourbon, vanilla, spice and chocolate in aroma and taste.
3.8 Bottle at Darkness Day. Nice rich dark brown pour with a small dense head. Cocoa and vanilla aroma and taste. Moderate palate. Yummy.
3.8 Aroma is dominated by the chocolate and vanilla. Medium strong dark chocolate notes with medium light vanilla notes. Hints of bourbon and roast. Pours black with a thin light tan head that recedes quickly to the edges where a slight film lingers. No lacing and medium sized legs. Flavor is as expected, tons of chocolate and medium light vanilla with moderate bourbon notes as well. Light roast and hints of dark fruit esters. Some alcohol in the finish along with lingering dark chocolate and light bourbon character. Medium bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with low carbonation. Some silkiness and creaminess as well. Low, but present astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall a pretty good beer, but I was expecting drop dead amazingness and was a bit let down. The mouthfeel is a bit off and I would like more vanilla to balance all the chocolate and bourbon in the flavor.
4.0 12/20/2010: Tyranena Doubly Down ’N Even Dirtier Barrel-Aged Chocolate Vanilla Double Stout (brewed with cocoa nibs and aged in bourbon barrels with cocoa nibs and vanilla beans)... Aroma: Dark chocolate, mocha creaminess, woody bourbon, and deep, intense vanilla. Appearance: Thick and silky pour of very dark brown liquid; steady flow of small carbonation bubbles that create a dense, rich tan-colored (mocha) head that lasts; splat lacing. Flavor: Dark chocolate; cocoa nib and espresso bitterness; charred wood; vanilla; coffee-like finish rimmed with vanilla. Palate: Thick and milky; medium-full body; smooth. Overall: Impressive; bourbon doesn’t dominate and chocolate and vanilla are there, but subdued; this is a well-done stout with lots of great flavors lurking. 12 fluid ounce bottle from Tmoney99. Thanks Tom! Rating #141 for this beer.
4.0 Bottle 12once, 355ml ? from Henrik many thanks. A dark beer without head. Nose is on dark chocolate, licorice, red fruits. Aroma is huge on dark malt, coffee, toffee, creamy body, licorice, prune, licorice, very pleasant chocolates notes. Some round caramel and wood, vanilla is light but there is a sweet floral touch that gose well here. Very tasty and easy drinkable.
3.9 black, amber edges no head nose is roasted coffee and cream lots of dark chocolate and a bit of sweet dessert wine.very sweet. vanilla and prunes
3.8 2010 review. Appears deep dark black/brown with virtually no head. Smell is bourbon, slight vanilla and deep rich malt. Taste is bourbon, vanilla, molasses, vanilla, rich dark fruit - lot’s of flavor and very tasty. Medium body - a bit watery for an impy stout. Fairly low carbonation, still smooth and pretty nice. Overall a nice sipper with a ton of flavor.
3.6 19th March 2011 Dark brown beer, tiny tan head. Low carbonation dry palate. Dry dark malt, semi sweet. A little vanilla and unsweet dark chocolate. Trace of wood. Good but lacks that luxuriant feel of the best BA Impies.
4.0 Dark beer with only the faintest brown galaxy of tiny bubbles on the surface for a head. Nice vanilla and bourbon barrel nose. Very warming alcohol sensation with flavors of bourbon, oak, vanilla, buttered burnt toast, roasted grains and some sweet caramel. Nice use of a barrel to compliment a nice impy stout.
3.8 Bottle shared at the September 2012 Santa Cruz tasting. Darkest brown with a light-tan head. Chocolate graham aroma with some vanilla. Vanilla flavor, boozy chocolate liqueur. Light body.
4.0 Bottle shared by drabmuh. Thanks Matt! A: Near black, the beer appears a very dark brown near the crest. The head is a half inch thick and beige in color, with average retention and some OK lacing left on the glass. S: Roasted malt, vanilla, chocolate, alcohol. T: The bourbon component is prominent and the beer has a rich, bold taste. Chocolate and vanilla are both distinguishable and add some great flavors into the mix. The beer is very well balanced, complex, drinkable, and enjoyable. M: Medium bodied and very smooth, with a moderate amount of carbonation. D: A delicious beer. I would be happy to drink this again. 3.7 12oz bottle courtesy of a LIF from Madvike. Thanks! A: Good thick pour yields minimal head and leaves a trace of it after the beer settles. It’s black as an RIS, though. N: Chocolate syrup, oak, plenty of vanilla. Great mixture of the bourbon components, the base beer, and the nibs. T: Balanced, but a little lacking. However, there’s an excellent mixture of the coffee and roasted malt "bitterness" and the chocolate and bourbon aspects. However, I’m docking points for noticeable alcohol. At 7.5% this shouldn’t even be an issue. M: Hurts the beer. It’s a little bit thin and watery, and as such can’t deliver the flavors with a right hook. I know it’s a double stout, but it still feels like it should have a bit more oomph. O: This is so close to being brilliant, but the mouthfeel continues to hold it back. I don’t know if it can get any thicker at 7.5% ABV, but if there was just a little more something here this would probably walk briskly into mid 4 territory.
3.8 Thanks to Exiled for sharing this bottle. The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is very heavy on the chocolate with some roasted malt, oak and bourbon notes thrown in. The barrel-aged notes are stronger in the flavor, where the bourbon and maple is the first thing to come through. I also get a nice amount of chocolate, as well as some vanilla and some alcohol. Medium to thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
3.8 Bottle. Pours dark black/brown with minimal lacing. Aroma is quite nice of dark chocolate, vanilla, bourbon and maybe some dark fruits. Taste is much of the same and packs very nice punch for the lower end of abv in imperial stout category. Chocolate is the king here. I really enjoyed this offering.
3.7 From notes. First reviewed 10/22/2011. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a snifter. Thanks to bauermj for opening this up. My pour has a molasses brown hue with slightly lighter transparent edges and a wispy off-white head. The aroma is full and robust. Dark, unsweetened chocolate, roast coffee, roasted malt, some light tobacco and smoke all contribute to the nose. The flavor is full of roasted and bitter notes. Roasted malt borders on burnt, with some smokey notes as well. Dark chocolate and roast coffee are noticeable as well. The bitterness lingers throughout the taste and finish. At the finish there is a light woody oak that contributes the only barrel character I get from this beer. This is a little light body for the style, although I understand it is only 7.5% ABV. The carbonation is a little fuller than medium and there is a light stickiness as well. Even though this is a little bit light, it packs some nice flavor and has a great aroma.
3.8 Bottle pours black with pretty much no head. Aroma shows notes of roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla, and of course bourbon. Flavor shows the same with additional notes of coconut, oak, coffee, more vanilla, and a touch of earth. Overall body is moderate to full, sweet, and finishes with roasted bitterness.
3.9 Bottle thanks to madvike. Great extra! Huge aroma full of fresh vanilla, sweet cocoa and the smallest hint of bourbon. Wonderful nose indeed. Flavors were also rich in vanilla and chocolate, light wood and a tinge of bourbon. Mouthfeel was quite creamy given the ABV, maybe some lactose was used? Either way, nicely done. Feels and tastes a lot bigger than it is. Carbonation light and fitting. Not quite an imperial stout but a well executed sweet stout. I enjoyed it.
3.9 12oz bottles. Rating #127. Tasty brew, chocolate and light roast. Flavor had a bit of roast and more chocolate. Nice stuff. (2051)
4.1 12oz bottle (received via trade with heybeerman) - A beer with a description like this not only is right up my ally, it’d better deliver and this one does. Just a great, great beer that’s complex on all kinds of levels, AND seals the deal with a statement that Tyranena is a GREAT brewery. Chocolate notes, vanilla, bourbon, chocolate sandwich. It’s like they took some kind of incredible chocolate dessert and stuffed it into the beer. Decadent. Flavor profile explodes with rich, decadent chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, toffee and light cream. Even as much as I loved this beer, I wouldn’t quite call it an imperial stout...more like an imperial porter or a robust porter. Fantastic no matter the style.
4.0 12 oz bottle. Ebony with sparse foam leaving a few specks. Nose is bourbon, dark chocolate and vanilla with hints of cherry and coconut. Medium to full body with a silky mouthfeel and a crisp tang. Taste is bourbon with a shot of espresso; chocolate and vanilla finish. Great.
3.5 (12oz bottle thanks to bu11zeye) espresso brown with a ring of dark tan head. Nose of vanilla, caramel and coffee. Taste of dry cocoa, vanilla beans, and sweet coffee. Nice linger, more watery than I thought it would be based upon the rich nose.
3.6 Bottle. Thanks to Doodler. Pours black with a small offwhite head. Aroma is cocoa, vanilla, alcohol, woody notes. Flavor is milk chocolate, bourbon, wood, roasted malt. Waterish palate.
3.6 Bottled. A pitch black beer with no head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt and soy sauce. The flavor is sweet with notes of alcohol, sweet and roasted malt, soy sauce, and wood.
4.0 loads of chocolate in the aroma with some bourbon. black pour with small head. flavour was dominated by the chocolates but some vanilla was noticiable. real easy drinking for the style. I quite liked it. thanks to Andrew!
4.0 12 oz. bottle shared by Tmoney99. Pours dark brown/black in color with a small beige head. The aroma is chocolate/cocoa, roasted malts with a slight sour quality. The flavor has chocolate, vanilla, roasted malts, mild bourbon notes with a slight sour twist. Medium to medium plus bodied and smooth drinking.
4.0 12/30/10. Bottle brought back by keenan. Black for the most part with a trim reddish tinted beige head. Lots of chocolate/cocoa in the nose… mixed with roast, oily vanilla, spice, a touch of sourness and dust. The bourbon flavor is mild but becomes well pronounced on the finish and aftertaste. Cocoa sourness is awesome on the finish as well. It is creamy and soft but in no way sticky. Nice. 8/4/8/4/16/4.0+
4.1 thanks hbmason for sharing-12oz bottle-pours a brown head and black color. Aroma is rich dark malt-molasses, bourbon, vanilla. Taste is bourbon, rich dark malt-molasses, vanilla, some earthy hops bite. Occasional.
3.3 Thanks to Mike for this... Dark shiny mahogany, nice light tan head... Chocolate with a bit of vanilla and scotch... The taste is a bit boring, really nice feel though, light chocolate with vanilla
4.0 Bottle thanks to Secret Santa! Pours black. Tan head. Nose and taste of rich cocoa, rich vanilla beans, bourbon barrel, roast chocolate malts and coffee. Very full nose! Dry bitter chocolate finish. Medium body.
