3.612 oz bottle from benzai, thanks! Bottled on 23 July 2014. Clear, deep amber to copper color. Light beige head with a 1 bubble layer retention. Aroma’s: flowery and fruity hops, tropical fruit, bready malts. Somewhat resinous retronasal, floral and herbal hops, malty sweetness. Flavor is moderate sweet with a nice moderate bitter backbone. Medium bodied. Finishes a bit dry and moderate bitter. Nice enough.
4.2"an aromatic and highly tasty IIPA courtesy of pfoxyjohn. nice bouqet of floral citrusy hops and spice. the head is big and tight. body is big and creamy. very nice. huge hop bitterness and flavor, and one of the hoppiest beers i’ve had that’s managed to be well balanced. flavor is lots of citrus and spicy hops and lots of malt to sweeten things up. lingering bittersweet aftertaste. very nice, smooth brew."
3.3Draft - Caramel and light pine. Clear copper with a rich off white head. Sweet caramel a pond some pine sweet hops. Sweet and lots of malt, but decent.
3.712 ounce bottle from Keg Liquors. Bit of a malt bomb with big malty flavors. Sticky nose. Some resin. No clue regarding freshness.
3.7Bottle @ weekly tasting shared with Dutchdrebus, Joes and Judyvv. Clear dark orange to reddish color, medium sized off-white to beige head. Aroma is malts, hops, sweet resin. Taste malts, hops, resinous, heavy resinous bitter. Very nice finish, but the initial flavors and aroma are slightly disappointing.
3.6Bottle @ Joes. Clear amber colour with a small off-white head. Smells hops, sweet, malts. Tastes sweet, malts, hops, fresh, nice. Could be more crisp. Medium body, nice carbo.
3.9Clear, deep amber-copper with a frothy, white head. It has an earthy and floral hop aroma with some mild citrus. The full body has a slick, oily body with good carbonation. The taste is moderately bitter to start and turns more bitter throughout the finish.
2.9Weird beer...not sure if ipa is the correct style for this one....malt dominant....not terrible....but not one to search out.
1.0I am rating this beer in comparison to other Imperial IPAs, which I would have to say this is not. I think this beer has more in common with a barleywine style like Lagunita’s Brown Shugga, as opposed to an Imperial IPA. The name is misleading; it has almost no hoppyness to it whatsoever.
Being in California, we do not get Tyranena out here, and I ordered it from a company in Illinois. I am used to West Coast styles of IPA such as Stone Enjoy By, Russian River’s Pliny the Elder and Firestone’s Union/Double Jack. Those beers are more traditional IPA with a strong hoppy flavor, bite, and substance. Those beers pour with an orangish hue and have a impressive and powerful aroma.
Imperial IPAs kick it up a notch and typically pour browner than regular IPA. They keep the hop flavoring, but lose some of the aroma.
Hop Whore is neither of these descriptions. It pours brown, like a barleywine style. It has a sweet and strong molasses odor, and tastes like sorghum and yeast. I don’t get any hoppyness from this at all, which really makes me question the name. If this were described as a barleywine, it would be more appropriate, but lacks the oomph to compete with beers on that level. This beer is really a conundrum to me as I don’t know how to classify it, but it is a terrible Imperial IPA.
3.8From 12 oz bottle but have had it on draft also. Aroma of burnt citrus orange. White head and pour a dark orange. Has citrus spruce mixed with orange taste. Hits the palate with a heavy bitterness at the front end and carries toward the back of your mouth with some resin. Very good effort for a Wisconsin Ipa in which this area is not known for imperial Ipa’s.
3.112oz bottle pours a clear somewhat dark amber with an off-white head and nice lacing. Aroma is caramel, mild perfume, malt, and a little hop. Flavor is a bit resiny bitter with a warm finish. Ok
2.9Bottle from Ware House Liqour, Chicago. Clear deep golden beer with a nice lasting offwhite head. Malty bready aroma, caramel, perfume, kinda aggressive hops. Hoppy caramel flavor, onions, bready, cream, some grapes. I did not like this one very much.
3.9Bottle pour into snifter glass from Belgium. Copper color slightly deeper hue than expected. Smell is really good...hops with some sweetness. Taste has some resin elements and a good deal of hops. Definite backbone of malt. Dries out the mouth while covering the palette. Probably worth a romp despite the STD risk.
4.2Lijkt redelijk op de La Trappe Oak Aged. Heerlijk aroma en mooie schuimkraag. Een bijna perfecte afdronk.
2.3Not a big fan of IPAs, but the name had me interested. A very earthy flavor, deep red appearance, and add an earthy aroma. OK for the the style.
3.4A very good ipa from Tyrrhenian. Super hoppy and nicely bitter. Smells hoppy and had this one at home
3.8One of the more multi IPAs. Very similar to a victory hop Devil. I prefer the more classic West Coast IPAs.
3.7sample at Food Bank bottle share, deeper orange pour. pretty potent bitterness with a hefty malt backbone. Nice
3.8A strong iipa. Pours a great burnt orange with head and lacing. Aromas are dank hops and sweet caramel. Nice backbone of malt on this. Great resiny finish. Nice stuff.
3.7bottle - Pours amber with a big, light tan head and good lacing. It has a citrus and malt aroma. The flavor features big hops bitterness and caramel. It’s full bodied with a long bitter finish. It’s strong and very good though for me not as good as some other double IPAs.
3.2Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. The aroma is pine hops, caramel malts, and signs of oxidation. The flavor is a strong caramel maltiness, pine and resinous hops, more signs of oxidation. This is a dull IIPA, way too sweet, and oxidized. This would be a better beer fresh for sure. A malty bitter bomb.
4.4Bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a very dark orange with some chunkies and a finger of thick white head. Aroma is loads of citrus and grapefruit with some pine resin and caramel. Taste is medium bitter. Loads of citrus and pine with a strong caramel backbone. Full bodied with a thick creamy texture. Lively carbonation and a super long finish. Overall, awesome. This one is a winner for sure.
3.6Dark reddish copper pour with a quarter inch creamy/khaki head and light sticky lacing .... aroma of caramel malts, floral and piney hops along with bitter pungent hops .... taste is piney and floral, grapefruity hops with a deep bitter earthy bite and caramel malts ... finish is super dry with a wicked bitter dry hop bite floral and piney hops lingering .... intensely bitter and very solid
4.0Bottle. Orange. Powerful aroma of hop and alcohol. Strong dry bite. Alcohol and grapefruit flavor. Aggressive and good.
3.7Bottle. Nose has apricot, mango and some piney-ness backed by caramel. Mouthfeel is very nice, thick and creamy, very substantial for the style, but converges in a very nice way with the hoppiness. Flavor is great - lots of pine and citrus with a long bitter/resiny finish. Great as is but I am wondering if this sample is not as fresh as it could be. Would like to try fresh on tap.
4.0Pours a clear, radiant ruby orange. Medium creamy white head, partially lasting with lace. Aroma is pretty balanced. Full of sweet and hoppy. Caramel, dense fruity, citrus, almost barley wineish. Flavor much the same, very hoppy, with some added pine. Full body. Oily. Fair bitterness. Pretty balanced finish. Sweet, bitter, dry.
3.8A: Amber/Golden Straw Hue, Passes Some Light, White Head Ring, Mild Lacing
S: Floral, Earthy, Mild Citrus, Mild Crackers
T: Sweet Citrus, Honey, Mildly Floral, Mildly Malty
M: Mediocre Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Mildly Drying
Overall, a nice hoppy beer that doesn’t burn you out and lightly sweet.
3.2Bottle. Pours an attractive deep amber with a small off white hed, decent retention. The aroma has a lot of piney, resiny hop notes and only a bit of the malty citrusy balance. The taste is fairly bitter, resiny, a bit of a sweet balabce but not overly citrusy.. more of a dry maltiness. Not crazy about it.
3.5Pours deep amber, cloudy, with a small tan head.
Baked bread, floral aroma.
Taste is toast, pine, malt, herbal hops, sweet fruit.
Nice steady bitter, caramel.
Gets a bit syrupy towards finish.
Very good.
3.412 ounce bottle. Pours golden orange with a small white head. Aroma of citrus, florals, and malt. Taste is grapefruit, other tropical fruits, florals, caramel malt, and alcohol. Pretty good.
