3.5 Bottle at Captain Lawrence courtesy of Greg during the release of Smoke from the Oak Apple Brandy Barrel. Pours a ruby brown with a thin beige head. Plum, prune, vanilla, and a light isopropyl note. Flavors are somewhat akin to decomposing fruit – plum and prunes. Light dry finish. Ok, but not amazing.
3.9 2006 Bottle. Hazy dark brown/orange colored pour with little carbonation and a nice spicy boozy aroma. Flavor was rich creamy and malty and finished with a little pear and brown sugar on the aftertaste. Ageing has definitely done this bottle some good, as it was very drinkable with none of the alcohol heat of a young barleywine.
3.8 The Dan Journal #264. tasted 6/8/09. 12oz bottle. Hazy and murky hue. Bready and bitter rye bread aromas. Full bodied with a soft palate. Nice caramel malt character with a noticeable alcohol burn. Nice bitter finish. This is really nice. Creamy vanilla malts mixed with the bitter and tangy hop finish. Good stuff!
3.8 Bottle thanks to skyviw and a dld trade,Pours thick and a hazy burnt orange to brown in color miniamal head aromas of sugsr, malts, caramel, and alchol taste is of all of the above witha sweet smokey, and peaty full bodied strong and bold
3.5 This brew pours a cloudy ruby brown color with a medium and fluffy beige head that recedes slowly. Patchy lacing on the glass. Sugary malt aroma with notes of smoke and vanilla. Medium body with a sweet malt and burnt sugar base and flavors of mild hops, smoke and oak mixed in. The finish is sweet and malty with a charred wood and caramel aftertaste. Interesting Barley Wine overall, yet not as enjoyable as I would have expected from this brewer.
3.4 12oz bottle from maximum12 poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy amber with a short-lived cream-colored head that leaves a small collar and no lacing. The aroma is very sweet with lots of caramel malts, toffee and dark fruits, especially figs and raisins. There is also plenty of brown sugar or molasses thrown in and the hops have pretty much faded. The taste is fairly basic for a barleywine with the caramel malts and toffee forming a decent backbone but with not much else going on. There are hints of dark fruit, but not lots. The mouthfeel is fairly thick and viscous for the style with a little soft carbonation. The sweetness just coats the mouth completely. This is a decent barleywine but I think it’s caught somewhere between an English and American barleywine. I don’t think it quite has the big complex sweetness of the English and the hops have faded a bit too much to really be a good example of the American. It’s still a good beer but it may have been a bit better fresh.
3.4 Bottle shared by Magjayran. Deep cloudy amber with a yellowish off-white head. Old fruit and malt on the nose with slight hope notes. Got some toffee and tobacco and slight smoke hints here too. I second JCB on the barleywine fatigue, but I suspect this is about as very-slightly-above-average as I thought it was.
3.4 Bottle shared by Magjayran - thanks, Jamey! This one was 2 years old, I believe. Thick pour and a slightly still body. Carbonation still fairly lively, decent head. Fruitcake in the nose, with a slight hop kick. Some toffee notes in the flavors, not really blending too well with the citrus that’s faintly detectable in there. But then again, we may have had BW burnout by this point in the tasting.
3.6 Bottle. Poured a ruby brown, with a small white head. Aroma of dark fruit, sweet malt caramel, and light spice. Taste is very malty, with more dark fruit, caramel, and light hop. Finish is warming. Body is medium, with some carbonation. Overall, an enjoyable barleywine.
3.6 Carolina crew gathering! Thanks! Muddy brown pour with a thick off white head and drippy lace. Dark fruit and peat on the nose. Caramelized sugar, figs, and light smoke. Dry alcoholic finish. Hop character seemed to be nonexistent
3.7 2007 Vintage. Appearance: Pours a murky, brownish-amber body with a thinnish, bubbly, off-white head. Smell: Richly malty, sweet-smelling nose with notes of caramel, plum jelly, toasted bread crumbs, peat smoke, and a minor hint of wafty alcohol. Taste: Quite sweet with tastes of dark caramel, brown sugar, and concentrated plum wine. Distinct kick of smoky peat. Curious hint of vintage boot leather. Only a touch of earthy bitterness remains at this point. Develops a more nutty quality upon warming. A tad alcoholic as you near the finish. One last taste of peat on the warming, semi-dry finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: Well, it’s certainly different; like a barleywine coupled with some wee heavy characteristics. Fairly decent overall.
3.3 Bottled sample, at least a couple of years old. Amber in colour with medium to strong carbonation and a few floaties. Aromas of stewed fruit, sherry, figs, vanilla, a bit of funk, and pale malts. Flavors are of caramel malts, vanilla, more sherry, and orchard fruit. Heavy and slick bodied, in spite of the fairly strong carbonation. Almost no bitterness or hop character to speak of. This particular bottle was a bit past it, but still fairly enjoyable.
3.7 Thanks ogglethorp. Murky auburn brown with a frothy tan head, minimal lace. Nose has a lot of figgy malt in it, is also sharply ethanolic. Flavors of malt syrup, figs, smoke; astringent with green apple, orange peel, and alcohol bitterness; finishes with caramel and smoky toffee. Full bodied, almost milky thickness, creamy palate, minimally carbonated.
3.0 2007 bottle acquired in trade and consumed in January of 2009. Pours a muddy brown. Aroma is very mild. A touch of malt and alcohol. Flavor is a little odd, the lack of a noticeable hop presence leaves this beer seriously wanting for depth of character. Perhaps too old?
3.0 bottle at Paul’s BW tasting. Deep amber in color. Aroma of molasses, some rubbery phenolics and light esters. Taste is molasses, a bit estery, some green apple. Tastes like the yeast got stressed. Medium body. Body could have used more heft.
3.2 Slightly caramel aroma, with hints of dark fruits, alcohol, and a touch of something astringent. Pours a hazy, reddish-brown, with just a dusting of tan head. The flavor has oak, vanilla, and just a touch of hop bitterness. Solid beer, nothing out of the ordinary, but very drinkable.
3.8 Courtesy of Ed. Aged... 2 years? Dark copper color with no head. Strong malty aroma and a little oak. Thick and chewy malt body. Light molasses, some brown sugar and sherry notes. Yummy!
3.4 [Bottle] Pours a cloudy ruby brown with a small beige head that gradually dissipates. Aroma is slightly subdued, but has a bit of citric hops, plenty of caramel and a hint of the alcohol. Flavor is interesting. Actually a little smoky like toasted wood. Was not expecting that one. There is also some candi sugar, a touch of raisin and caramel, and more of that alcohol. This is one of the more unusual barleywines that I have had in a while.
3.6 Tyranena spank me baby as Spank Me Baby Barley Wine with wood. Amber with a thin off-white head. Aroma of alcohol, caramel, light fruit and mild sugar. Taste of alcohol, hops, caramel, raisons, sugar, molasses and mild wood. Smooth body with some alcohol burn and warming effects.
3.0 12 oz bottle. I could have sworn I liked this beer when I had it over a year ago. This one was aged since early 07. Pours an ok medium coppery brown with an ok fizzy head. Aroma is wierd though- tons of rubber, plastic phenols, along with a good amoutn of acetaldehydes, green apple, and some pear to go along with a lame and weak caramel malt backbone. Flavor is a bit more green apple, phenolics, ok toasted and caramelt malts, ligth pear and raisin fruitiness, a bit estery and solvent-like in the finish- and a bit thin. One of my least favorites of the night.
3.6 Bottle at Paul’s Gathering: Murky deep copper pour topped by a dense tan head. Sweet aroma- dark caramel, old plums/prunes, honey and a touch of toasted vanilla. Rich palate. Sweet but isn’t cloying. The flavor has some honey and toasted vanilla over ripe dark fruits- plummy notes and a touch of gingerbread. There’s a smoky hint in there as well. Finish has a smooth long mild bitterness with residual earthy notes and smoky hints. Big, but gentle drinking.
3.2 12oz bottle that’s been sitting around for awhile..... pours a cloudy dark cinammon brown and a soapy/wispy white head.... dark fruits and candied sugar upfront in the aroma, followed by caramel malt....dark fruits and caramel malt upfront. some subtle tobacco and peat in the flavor but to a lesser extent as well. average mouthfeel. booze only slightly detectable in the finish but just barely.
3.7 Numero #500. Poured from an ’06 Grrrowler. Lots of candy sweetness in the aroma. More to match on the pallate. Sweet mollases, carmel, and old fruit. Very, very rich stuff. The 6oz glass I had took some time to go down. Slighty booze burn on the back side. THis aged well, but was a bit on the sweet side for me to really spank any babies about.
3.1 7-13-08 bottle shared with lb4lb thanks to kramer17801 Very thick dark amber pour with a thin off-white head. Smell is caramel and honey and fruity but very light and not very complex. Flavor is caramel and alcohol - up front and in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and decent.
3.2 Bottle in trade courtesy of kramer17801. Thanks! Pours a rich muddy, opaque brown with a creamy beige head. Smell is very metallic with some lightly fruity notes behind, but not very aromatic or inviting. Taste is dull up front with some fruity flavors behind and a lightly alcoholic finish. Really pretty thin in the flavor department and very short lived. Some light nuttiness lingers, but still a pretty abrupt finish. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Not terrible tasting, but really wasn’t that flavorfull, either, and the nose was a bit of a turnoff.
2.2 Review from 2006. Tyranena’s newly released Barley Wine? Hell yeah, let’s give it a try! Poured a very nice maroon color with a beige head with good retention and nice lacing. Sadly, from here it all fell apart. Smell was like a combination of pine and cat piss. I don’t say cat piss to be childish, that’s what it smelled like, and depending on whether or not they used Cluster hops in this, Cluster hops have been known to give such an aroma. Taste is the same, just couldn’t take it. Ignoring the taste, the characteristics of the mouthfeel, medium-full bodied with medium carbonation, would be considered good to me, so I will not bring them down just because of the taste. I feel that taste does affect drinkability and will rate accordingly, this was an absolute drain pour, couldn’t even have half of it. I cannot assume this was an off bottle because it just got to the store and was transported immediately to my fridge. In the chance that this was an off bottle, I will try this again, and will change my review if deemed necessary. Although I haven’t posted official reviews for some of the Tyranena products I’ve had, I’ve been pleased on every occasion, except this one. Edit: I have tried this beer a couple times now and been extremely disappointed on all accounts. I’m not wasting any more money to try to find a bottle that tastes good, I think this one just doesn’t agree with me.
3.7 bottle: pours with no head but bubbly a dirty murky brown colour body. aroam is very malty slight cheese aroma, hints of toffee and some dark fruits good raisin aroma that is very enjoyable. flavour is very malty with plenty of raisins adn slight cheese again. the finsih is good and quick with some dryness and wonderful palate that is just a litlle sticky, some chocolate and slight roast slide in at the end not ot bad.
3.3 Pours a cloudy, hazey copper colour with a big white head. Aroma is strong of alcohol, barley (der) and grapes. Taste is pleasent, semi sweet with a long lasting finish.
3.7 Thanks to ogglethorp for the trade. Pours a hazy brownish amber with amber/orange/ruby notes and a smaller bubbly/creamy off white head that left some lacing. Aroma of dark fruits, leather, smoke, tobacco, lots of raisins, touch of vanilla, some molasses and toffee notes. Flavor of raisins, other dark fruits, smoke, toffee, molasses, some vanilla and nuts.
3.1 Bottle. Body-muddy brown body with minimal CO2. Nose-Meow-Mix, burnt plastic, flax seed, very light formaldehyde, smoked meat-smells like a BBQ fueled by a chemical fire. Taste-BBQ, meaty, salty, numbs the tongue, acrid finish, smoke, low to medium sweetness, mildly raw. Overall quite disappointing in a burned horse kind of way.
