Chief BlackHawk Porter is a robust black and sharply bittersweet ale. This style was traditionally the session beer consumed by the porters in London.

4.1Pours dark mahogany from the bottle with a foamy tan head. Aroma is smoke, coffee, and roasted malt. Tastes nice and thick on the tongue. Taste is VERY similar to the Cast Iron Oatmeal Brown by 4 Hands Brewery. It’s uncanny how alike these are. Taste is smooth with coffee and roasted malt, all in a smoky finish. This is a fantastic beer!
3.7Starts with a strong coffee and light smoke flavor. Finished bitter with a black coffee flavor. Really smooth and easy to drink. Smells like coffee. Had out of a bottle at home.
3.4Bottle to shaker, small light brown head that rapidly diminshed. Burnt, bready nose. Med-full body with average carbonation.long lasting flavor with a bitter finish. Over all a very good porter.
3.2Tap at the taproom July 30th. Notes are lacking in text. Bittersweet. Sessionable.
4.0A very incredible dark beer. Sweet with a light grain aroma and a perfect mouthfeel For the ABV this is what you want out of a beer such as this. Thick creamy sweet dark grain. Wow Home run session ALE!
Update after at the brewery. Overall I reduced from 20 to 18. Everything else stands. Still a very solid beer.
3.712 oz bottle pours black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate and toffee. Taste is malts, coffee and chocolate.
3.612 oz. bottle poured to a Czech-pils glass, producing an overly active, billowy, brownish tan head that turned a mousse-like and stubbornly persistent layer covering the dark brown, amber & ruby highlighted liquid. The lacing showed thick, frothy, and spiraling qualities. The nose was roasted & very malty, with chocolate, caramel, a touch of treacle, and light woodiness. After waiting patiently to taste, the flavor added moderate, roasted & earthy bitterness, a touch of smoky astringency, cocoa, and subtle coffee. A little less than medium bodied, the texture thinned a bit, and the carbonation softened after a good deal of the initial effervescence was wasted on the display. Still pretty rich & tasty.
3.2Bottle from Discount Liquors in Milwaukee, WI. What a great store.
The beer is dark brown, approaching black, nearly opaque with a small beige cap. Aromas include the expected roasted malt, chocolate. Light char and coffee notes in the flavor. The body is perhaps a tad thin. Overall, pretty good, but perhaps a little weak in body and potency
3.7Draft at The Old Fashioned. Pours a dark brown color with a small khaki head. Notes of chocolate, toasted and roasted malts, earth, coffee, and light cream. Very smooth mouthfeel, with moderate carbonation and a light to medium body. Good, simple, smooth, tasty porter.
3.8Draft. Wonderfully smooth session-style porter, with a ton of cafe au lait, raw coffee, dark chocolate, and spice and fruit from the simple hopping.
3.5355ml twist off bottle. Pours a dark brown with a long-lasting tan/offwhite head. Nice lacing. The smell is roasty, lighly smoky, some peat, plenty of unsweetened cocoa. The flavor once again brings to mind smoke. It is slightly metallic but nicely peaty with cacao nibs and a sharp bitterness. Nice one.
3.7Pour from bottle. Roasty malts. Very subtitle chocolate and coffee. Nice easy drinkable porter. Surprised by this one.
3.7Rated on 6-05-2010 (Bottle) This beer pours a medium sized smooth tan head, opaque dark brown body and a fair amount of lacing. The aroma is malty, roasty, chocolate, and coffee. The taste is lightly bitter, malty, coffee, chocolate, and roasty. The palate is lightly tingly and a bit thin. This beer is light-medium bodied. This beer is very quaffable, has a nice roasty flavor, worth trying, and a beer I would drink again.
3.9Bottled 12/7/12. Drank 12/19/13. Over a year old. Cap exploded. Scared the hell out of me. Pours oily black with a fluffy light off-brown head. Aroma is dark chocolate, roast malt, coffee, vanilla, licorice, some dark fruits, bread. Taste is rich, bittersweet; dark chocolate, creamy, roast malt, licorice, hints of dark fruit; very tasty. Nice lacing. Chewy mouth feel. Medium-low carbonation. Really tasty. Nice. I enjoyed this beer a lot.
3.4Deep black pour, ruby hue with a thin and fizzy khaki bubbly head .. aroma of sweet chocolatey and deep roasted malts with light coffee flavor .... taste is of roasted malts with light coffee, caramel and light chocolate malts .... finish is dry ... simple porter mouthfeel is a little slick and the body is thin
3.5Paid $4.00 for a 6 oz. half pint at Hopleaf. Color is hard to see in poor lighting but it looks typical, with thin bubbly tan head. Nose is milk chocolate, roasted barley and caramelized sugar. The flavor is rather nice with the aroma reflecting the taste with the addition of small amounts of espresso beans and vanilla hints. Body displays some creaminess in texture yet, also has a thin watery element. Still after completing the half pint I realized that it was still rather nice to drink with good flavors.
3.4Pours dark brown with tan head. Nose is of chocolate, ashy malt, nuts and a bit of pepper. Taste is a medium to light body chocolate, roasty malt taste with some pepper as well. Not bad.
3.5On tap at the brewpub. Comes dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, and coffee. Taste is roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, and nuts. Very good.
3.7Brown color. Robust roasted aroma tastes roasted and sweet with some hop balance. Really drinkable and enjoyable porter.
3.6Mahogany. Large frothy beige head, lasting with lace. Roasty. Chocolate. Roasty bitterness. Fairly dry. Very drinkable porter.
3.4Pour is dark brown/black with a thinnish tan head. Nose is bitter almost sour. Very yeasty. Some hints of burnt coffee and dark bitter chocolate. Taste is more pleasant than nose. Nice roasted malt flavor with dry burnt coffee mouthfeel. Glass has nice lacing as I drink. Okay but glad it was part of a build your own sixer.
3.9Rather impressive porter, with a dark, nutty robustness that steals the show. Pours a dark, almost oily brown to black, with a great profile and aroma. Nice one for sure.
3.9Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. Pours a dark brown with a light beige head. The aroma has burnt coconut and chocolate. Taste is bittersweet chocolate with a nice toasty note. Thicker mouthfeel. Nice beer.
3.6Pours a dark ebony with frothy voluminous tan head. Aroma is dominated by strong dark roasted malt and a bit of chocolate notes. The taste is a great blend of bitter and sweet notes. An easy finish makes for a very delicious session able porter
3.5Pours black with a two finger sized, tan head. Had aromas of roasted coffee, vanilla, licorice, and a bit of milk chocolate. Pretty sweet going down, with a mild hop bite on the end. Roasty aftertaste, and was not as smooth as 5.4% would indicate. Pretty good porter at a decent price.
3.3Bottle. Pours dark black with no head. Aroma is roasted malts. Flavor matches aroma. Still a little drunk, still nothing special. Blahhhhhhh.
4.2Slightly phenolic with hints of coffee. Appears black, but hold it up to a light and it has some red hues around the edges. Slightly acrid with a coffee roast/bittnerness that comes through. Just enough malt sweetness and dryness to make you want another sip.
3.5Poured from draft at Hopleaf. Black and thick. Coffee notes. Very very rich. Great flavor and enjoyable
2.9Bottle. Pours a deep nearly opaque brown, with a nonexistent head (could be my glass though). Nose is standard porter -- dark roasted barley dominating. Mouth is medium bodied, malt forward, then bitter with a hint of soot. Not really all that great -- especially given the weighted average, so to be fair, this may just be an old bottle.
3.712 oz bottle courtesy of elkhunter. Thanks. Pours a dark brown color with a small beige head that has fair retention. The aroma is mild with dark roasted grains and some coffee. The flavor is similar to the nose, coffee, blackened barley, unsweetened baking chocolate and earthy hops provide a nice bitter balance. The palate is full and smooth with medium carbonation. Finishes a bit short with some lingering acidity. Overall: Very nice little brew, I will drink again.
