Tyranena Down n' Dirty Chocolate Oatmeal Stout

Tyranena Down n' Dirty Chocolate Oatmeal Stout

When the railroad was completed between Madison and Milwaukee in 1882, mucky soils in the glacial swamp near Lake Mills made the tracks most unsteady. A bridge-tender stood guard, 24 hours-a-day, to warn oncoming trains of the danger ahead and caution them to slow their pace. One engineer chose not to heed this warning and the locomotive lost control and tumbled off the bridge into the mud below. The train is said to be forever entombed deep in the muck along the present day Glacial Drumlin trail. We brew Down ‘n Dirty Chocolate Oatmeal Stout thick and black like the glacial muck.

3.1 Nothing too special. Had a lot of chocolate flavor, tasted like a average joe stout. Fine to drink however. Very little amount of bitter, as well as other heavy flavors. Was smooth, but didn’t have the ’alcohol’ taste I tend to enjoy in most stouts.
3.9 Pour was deep dark with a slightly dark tan head. Aroma was strong with chocolate, light caramel, and some bread characters. Body was medium to full with a smooth oat character along with some more well blended chocolate malt and a nice caramel finish.
3.7 Dark pour with a light brown head. Aroma is roasted malt and chocolate. Taste is creamy, roasted malt, oatmeal and semi-bitter chocolate. All the flavors meld together well. Nice lacing.
3.6 Aroma of burnt malt, cocoa, some coffee, taste is chocolate, coffee, burnt malt, sweet, but drinkable.
3.7 12 oz bottle pours a black with a sudsy brown head. Smells like roasted malt, burnt oats, a hint of coffee and cocoa. Tastes good. Not as full bodied as some of the other Imperial stouts, but it’s nice and creamy, mildly carbonated, and has a nice long finish. An outstanding brew at this price point. Another really good beer from Tyranena.
3.9 Smells bourbony and tastes sweet and smokey. Slight roasted coffee notes and vanilla. Bitter finish. Pours black with a reddish tan head. Had at home.
3.4 On tap @ Beer Camp - Chicago. Pour is deep brown with a milk chocolate colored head. Aroma and flavor of coffee grounds, chocolate, roasted malt, slight caramel. Finish is sweet with bitter coffee. Somewhat thin for the ABV.
3.8 Bottle from Tooch via trade. Pours pitch black with a one finger tan head. The nose is roast, milk chocolate and coffee. The taste is ashy cocoa, milk chocolate, roast, coffee and light hops. Medium bodied. Enjoyable stout. 3.8
3.7 Bottle pour at world of beers in Evanston. Black with not much head. Nutty mild chocolate cocoa flavor. Malty. Very tasty
3.6 Pitch black with big tan head. Nose heavy with acidic roast malt, coffee, and dark chocolate. Smooth, oatmeal-silky body with more acidic roast malt/coffee with a faint sweet aspect. Lingering bitter chocolate and roast. The acidic roasted malt quality is just slightly more than I’d like. Nice stuff.
3.6 [Tap] Draught at Farmhouse in Evanston. Pours an opaque black color with a lasting brown head. Aroma is of roasted malts, chocolate, espresso and vanilla bean. Oatmeal comes out a bit more in the flavor. Milk chocolate, mocha, earthy notes and lingering bittersweet finish. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Pleasantly surprised by this one.
3.3 Too thin in my opinion especially for an oatmeal stout. Has a finger tan head that recess nicely. Good flavor nothing that makes it unique but a middle of the road oatmeal chocolate stout.
3.6 Black pour with a creamy tan colored head. Chocolate & roast aroma. Creamy mouth. Lots of roast & dark chocolate. Bitter espresso creeps in as it warms. Roasted nuts also pop in and out of this one as your drink it. Lace is present.
4.1 Bottle. Pours thick, nearly black. medium creamy light brown head, fairly lasting with some lace. Lighter medium body. Creamy. Fairly Soft. Oatmeal character makes a super smooth mouthfeel. Aromatic and flavorful. Sweet. Roasty. Really pleasant bitterness through the finish. Coffee and chocolate stand out.
3.9 Deep mahogany color out of the bottle with a fluffy brown head. Chocolate and cereal grain nose. Very smooth mouthfeel with flavors of chocolate, dark toast, dried fruit, burnt caramel, and some sweetened coffee in the finish. Tasty oatmeal stout.
3.6 Bottle. Pours nearly black with ample tan head, nice lacing. Aroma is combo of roast malt, toffee and chocolate. Taste is roasted caramel, chocolate, marshmallow and some oats. Slightly bitter finish with thin mouthfeel.
3.5 Draft to taster. Looks good; a mostly opaque dull block with light beige lacing. Smells of dark malt, dark chocolate, oats, and light roast. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel; a bit of a metallic finish though. A solid example of the style.
3.2 Bottle. Pours black with tan head. Aroma is nothing, flavor is roasted malts, oatmeal and some chocolate. Thin palate.
4.0 Bottled 2/6/13. Poured 12/19/13. Pours opaque brown-black with a fluffy light brown head. Aroma is chocolate, roast, bready, earth; fairly simple. Taste is creamy, malty, some alcohol, chocolate, coffee; simple but really nice. Finish is bitter chocolate. Nice lacing throughout. Medium-low carbonation. Chewy mouth feel. Really nice, tasty, drinkable. Excellent.
3.6 Pours a fairly translucent dark brown from the bottle, appearing black in the glass with a fairly thick khaki head that settles to a ring and leaves spotty lace. Nose involves roasted malt, toasted notes, chocolate, earthy hops, dust, and vanilla. Quite sweet, fairly bitter. Rich but thinner side of medium bodied, silky, pretty actively carbed, tingly, sticky, with a chocolaty bitter finish. Pretty enjoyable if a bit lacking body-wise. Bottled Feb ’13.
3.7 Draught @ Dexter’s in Madison. Pours basically black with a small tight head and nice lacing on the glass. The aroma is funny, in a sort of malt extract kind of way... more pleasant notes include chestnut, ash, light coffee... mild chocolate. Pretty ok smelling all around. The flavor is really nice, rich and roasty with some sweetness up front and plenty of bitterness to back that up. Not overbearing, but very flavorful, pretty well balanced, pretty grate.
3.9 On tap at Three Floyds, Black pour with a thick tan head. Aroma of oatmeal dominates, backing choc/coff. Taste chocolate, oatmeal finish, creamy body.
4.0 Pours an opaque black with a small tannish head mostly dissipating. Nose is coffee and molasses. Exceptionally smooth and creamy, this brew is full bodied and full of dark molasses, coffee, dark chocolate and malt flavors with a very light hop suggestion. An excellent beer for its style, it pairs well with pan fried bluegills and hash browns with onions.
3.7 Just ate a cupcake, pours black with low carb, aroma is chocolate and heavy roast. Taste is smooth with a nice bitter roast and slightly sweet finish.. Good one
3.3 Pours dark with an ample cream head and lacing. Aroma is sweet chocolate and grain. Taste is light chocolate, roast, and water. Thin palate and watery. Not a fan of this one.
3.5 Thick black color. rich pillowy head. Rich smell of coffee. It starts out with a great combination of coffee, chocolate, malts, and oatmeal. Finishes very bitter. Overall I feel it could be a top beer if it was a touch sweeter and creamier, but less bitter. The bitter finish is a bit too overpowering. Really a very good beer.
3.1 The thin-ness and carbonation detracts from the taste. It's not terrible. It's just not what I was hoping for. Kinda plain, in my opinion. ---Rated via Beer Buddy
3.6 Pours an inky, oily looking black with a minimal, although long lasting tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, cocoa, chocolate, and just hints of licorice. The taste is plenty of malts, more earthy actually. There is still a healthy amount of chocolate, especially in the aftertaste. The chocolate aftertaste is rather subtle, but it does linger in your mouth. I still find very subtle impressions of licorice. This is a bit sweet as well. The body is medium, while it has a smooth, creamy texture. Carbonation is limited. Very easy drinking here, although I get the feeling it might be a bit stronger than I realize.
3.3 Firkin Fest 2013. Black of course. Thick. Some oak, and I think I taste a little whiskey. Rich, roasted malt. Solid
3.7 Aroma is malts, chocolate and a slight mustiness. The flavor is chocolate, roasted malts/bitter coffee and an acidic/tart finish.
