3.7 Pours a slightly hazy, bright golden orange color with apricot colored edges and a two finger, yellowish-beige head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Very good retention with a pillowy cap that takes a while to settle, leaving streaks of soapy lacing in it’s path. Sweet, slightly smokey aroma with a nice charcoal/campfire character countered by sweet malt backbone. Decent smoke character but not too intense with hints of butane, ash and smoked meat countered by sweet caramel malt, toffee and biscuit. I would have preferred a little more smoke but it’s not tame by any stretch if the imagination. Inviting nose on this beer that’s reminiscent of a lighter version of an authentic German rauch bier. Medium body with crisp carbonation and a strong smoked malt flavor that’s heavier than the aroma suggests. The beechwood smoke really stands out with hints of ash, charcoal, burnt malt, and barbecued bacon. This is countered by a sweet malt backbone and light bready yeast character. Caramel sweetness along with toffee, hazelnut, bread and subtle dark fruit esters. Very good imitation of a rauch bier flavor profile but slightly less intense. Similar to something from Schlenkerla but the smoke flavor isn’t quite as rich or complex. Still, this beer is well balanced and easy to drink while packing a decent amount of smokey flavor.
3.4 Bottle thanks to Eugene. The night is over and all I have are the remnants, which means almost half a bottle of this -- apparently the world doesn’t appreciate smoked beers. But I’ve got my x-files and I’m in the mood to tick, so bring it. Clear copper pour. Not a lot head now, but there may have been some a few hours ago, so I’ll let it slide. Aroma: bandaid/adhesive. Taste: toast, caramel, light campfire. Moderately sweet. Light bitterness. Medium bandaid. Newfoundland (??? wtf autocorrect, that’s "medium") body, slick texture. Overall: the kind of smoked beer that doesn’t appeal to me.
4.0 This was poured into a mug with a light hazy bronzed semi-burnt orange to ruddy brown color with a one finger white to off white foamy head. Thick foamy lacing roams around the glass after the head dissipated. The smell starts off with a rich sweet to moderately smoked malts. Light meatiness enters in after a bit of warming. The taste was mainly sweet with an ample amount of smoked malt portion. Meatiness is extremely subdued. But a light crisp breadiness does show some extra flavor and ends up leading slightly into the aftertaste and on into a quick sweet moderately smokey finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a pretty good sessionability about it. Carbonation runs fairly light. Smooth sweet to smokiness runs along my tongue nicely. Overall, smoked lager or rauchbier (as I have very little experience with rauchbiers), its good for me and I would have it again.
3.6 Bottle. Moderate dark bread and caramel for the malt, moderate herbs for the hops, and meat for the yeast, with a big note of smoke. Head is small, frothy, white with some slippery lacing and is almost fully diminishing. Color is murky medium amber. Flavor starts lightly to moderately sweet and acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, slick, with a fizzy carbonation. Full of smoke and the right amount sweetness in this Smoked Beer.
3.4 Sample from 75 cl. bottle. Slightly hazy, amber-golden colour with a thin, white head. Fruity aroma with smoked notes and caramel malts. Taste is bitter. Medium body, creamy texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes dry and fruity with smoked notes. OK.
3.6 Pours a hazy light amber with a white, foamy head and lacing. It has a nice aroma of toast and smoke with a flavor of smoke and a bit of dark fruit on a dry but slightly sweet finish, all over a medium body.
3.4 Opened 7/15 but purchased 7/14. Pours a golden orange color with a light white head. Aroma of Frankenscence and Myrrh incense. Reminds me of Catholic Mass in a glass. The flavor takes much like a lager with a shot of scotch in it. On the palette it has strong undertones of a scotch whiskey. Overall good, but more scotch like smoke, not a "campfire like smoke" as stated on the bottle.
3.6 Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a beige head. The aroma has notes of beechwood smoke, caramel, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of beechwood smoke, lemons, caramel, and malt, leading to a bitter finish.
3.9 750ml bottle. Tan-copper body, looks filtered. Nice steady, foamy white/off-white head. Classic and well done, reminds me of Spezial Lager. Medium bodied, really easy going. Pretty much nails it. Pleasantly devoid of gimmicks. Would love to see this in sixpacks.
3.7 Bottled. Golden coloured. Unclear. Dense off white head. Aroma. Smoke, fruits, herbs, light bacon. Flaovour. Bacon, meat, smoke, light herbs, sweetness, Medium bodied. Ends smoky.
3.3 Bottle@Yespr’s - golden orange pour with white head. Aroma and taste comprises smokey meatiness, bacon, sweet malts, some spices, ok.
3.3 Bottle. Hazy dark yellow colour with a white head. Aroma and flavour of malt, hops, fruit, smoke and caramel.
3.4 clear yellow, small white head. very nice smoked malts aroma, meat, fattish in the aroma. flavor is smoked malts, balanced but subdued hops. classic german style smoked.
3.4 75 cL bottle. Pours cloudy orange with a small white head. Aroma is mild smoked and breadish light malty. Toasted malty and light smoked. Caramelish. Sweet and toasted malty. Bitter and smoked finish.
3.4 750ml corked and caged bottle. Funny name. It is a golden smoked lager, meaty and smoky at first but it gets real light and airy as you go. Not bad but not holding a candle to Schlenkerla.
4.6 This is a slightly misleading beer at first whiff. Then with a look at the stuff, followed with a draught - you know you’re in the presence of greatness. This stuff for a smokey brew, no question, is also very drinkable! Smoke beers are not my thing, but I’m having a hard time keeping my mitts offa this brew. The malt sweet to smoke is a thing of beauty.
3.8 Pretty good but I’d love to see this in smaller bottles. Whew that was a lot of sweet smoky lager. Flavor was like a nice smoky campfire, and smoky smoked sausage. Flavor similar smoke and meat, savory, but also very sweet with toffeeish melanoidin malts. Initially effervescent, it seemed to lose liveliness quickly (I didn’t nurse it) and was fairly flat, sweet and dull/heavy on the palate by the end of the 750. Poured initially with a nice head but subsequent pours lacked foam. Pure amber color.
3.8 Bottle. Pours a transparent golden with a super thin layer of creamy off white head. Aroma and taste of smoked meats, slightly malt forward with hints of hops.
4.3 Absolutely wonderful smoked beer. The smokiness is there and plentiful, but it enhances the base lager without overpowering it. Recommended.
3.9 great smoked aroma. In taste is a bit less palpable, but still ok. It’s a good one, but not much better, if at all, than polish smoked craft beer.
2.4 Bottle shared at the KoBB meeting. Light golden pour with a big white head. Aroma is smoke, beef, and roast. Taste is almost sweet and sour, a little more beef, and smokey finish.
3.6 750ml corked bottle. Pours a clear light amber with a large white head and leaves plenty of lacing. Aroma of a campfire cookout! Smoky burning cherry wood, grilled meats, hickory, caramel. The smell of late summer/early fall. Taste is smoky goodness right up front and center. Taste is the equivalent of what burnt hickory and cherrywood smell like. Strong smoked meats flavor here too, specifically smoked sausage. I swear I can even taste the barbecue sauce. Under that there is a great caramel malty base. Maybe even a hint of bitter hops. Long finish of smokiness and maltyness. Light medium bodied, slick texture, fair carbonation. This may be the perfect beer for a nice September or August autumn night when there is a slight chill in the air and the leaves are just starting to turn colorful. And it’s not so bad when the tempature is in the teens and there is snow and ice covering everything, as I am discovering.
3.6 Bottle: Cloudy, golden sunshine aroma, slightly orange with a really foamy eggshell cap that slowly recedes, retains for a while, & leaves some splotchy lacing behind. Aroma is heavy of liquid smoke, semi-sweet with campfire undertone. Light hint of smoked sausage, charred hickory, toasted crackers, & grain. Flavor hits with more sweet smoke, a light meaty essence & a big campfire closer. Heavily toasted grains, light earthy & woodsy bitterness, & a strong, bready finish. Sweet smoke lingers into the aftertaste. Medium bodied. A really nice smoked lager.
3.5 @ Eddan 15-2-14: stora tydliga röktoner och sälta i doften. Smaken har en lenare röksmak med en aning syrlig efterton. ---- Soberness not garanteed!
2.2 Sample at a tasting event. Not my thing, tasted way too much campfire and smoked meat.
3.1 750ml bottle. Yellow/orange pour with an off white head. High carbonation, fizzy. Smoky, campfire, sweetness, salty, mild bacon, and notes of acidity. Ok.
3.4 On tap at cottonwood. Smoke is the character. Sweet and deep yellow and average mouthfeel.
3.4 750 ml bottle caged and corked from Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, on sale for $5. Seems that not a lot of people are a fan of rauchbier, but my tastes are adventurous. Pour is deep gold, somewhat cloudy, with a one finger, creamy white head that maintains and leaves thick lacing. Strong campfire aroma. Lightly sweet, light bitter, light salty, mildly sour. Has a light to medium body, thin texture, average carbonation, and smokey, long finish. I like this more as I get further into the bottle, the strong flavors grow on you and become more mild. Overall has a dry feel with plenty of smoke. Would be good to pair with a cheese and salami plate.
3.6 Ballcock adjustment and matching pj’s at great wolf lodge. Smoke-y and santa hats. Brutus, pontius and the other bloke have it easy. Oddly tart. Thanks saint nick, my wife, AndyReynolds and tj from Deps.
3.8 Meaty smoke aroma, little roasted notes, just smoke. Crystal clear amber thick yellow head, good lace. Smoke, sweet lemon candy. Odd mix, and maybe a slight exaggeration, but this seems very sweet. The sweet smoke subsides, leaving just a mild lemongrass finish. Medium body, soft carbonation, smooth. Very odd beer, and not terribly enjoyable at first, but it doesn’t take long to become better acquainted with this. There’s no way you could appreciate this beer from anything less than the 750ml bottle it comes in.
