10 % of alcohol, a light Scotch-aftertaste, a nice body coming from the 4 different kinds of malt (one pale, two caramelised and one torrified malt).

3.7Pours dark brown and murky with an audible fizziness. Rich smell of milk chocolate, bread, malty cereals and lots of things that are great to eat. Thick palate too and good balance sweet/bitter. Quite luxurious really.
3.6Brownish beer with a lot of sediment and a nice beige head. Aroma is medium sweet, with roasted malts and a bit alcohol. Flavour is very soft, medium sweet, yeasty and the alcohol is very well hidden and only comes to the surface when the beer warms up a bit. Very nice brew. (Bottle 33cl)
3.9Bottle. Pours a murky brown with a tan head. Aroma of malt and alcohol. Taste is malty and fruity. Very sweet and ULTRA SMOOTH. Real good
3.5Dark brown, medium carbonation. Aroma is sweet and bitter with a sour hint. Notes of caramel, nuts, dried fruit. Bitter sweet aftertaste.
2.7The head is ok, body brown and cloudy. It smells malty, darkmalty, alcoholic. The taste is yeasty, alcoholic, not the best alcoholic taste, strange. Drinkable. 11/8/8/7/12/8

With the selection of higher gravity beers not that diverse at the time I chose to go with a continental offering. This is a very well made Belgian strong ale that fits the style instead of trying to be some sort of novelty. I would drink a couple more Ecaussinnes beers if they are not too expensive.
Aroma / Appearance - A creamy chestnut body is thick like melted chocolate or stained maple syrup watered down to be drinkable. The creamy legs add to a satisfying presence. Chestnuts, figs, almonds, and Hershey’s chocolate are heady and sweet like a glass of true hot chocolate. Traces of Granny Smith apples hide in the background.
Flavor / Palate - Carbonated hot chocolate and apple cider refresh the throat. Caramel, honey, and warm Hershey’s kisses melt on the tongue. There is a boozy aspect which is not shocking for a 10% ABV beer. This might be a better example of the style than most.
3.5Bottle @ home shared with Dutchdrebus. Clear red color, medium sized, quickly diminishing off-white to beige head. Smell malts, sweetness and a touch of herbs a spices. Taste malts, sweetness, some alcohol and again some herbs of spices. Medium and a bit fizzy carbonation, medium to full body. Nice beer, though the carbonation does make me not want more than a single bottle per night.
3.7Bottle @ benzai. Brown to ruby colour with a medium beige head. Smells herbs, malts, some alcohol. Tastes sweetish, some herbs, raisins, malts, some liquorice. Full body, warming to the chest, medium to heavy carbo.
3.5Sample @ DØE. Nice head with good duration. Color is brown. Aroma and taste are yeast, fruits, malt, caramel and hops.
3.5Light brown body, creamy head. Caramel and roasted malts, brown sugar and cereal. Sweet smooth brown sugar body. Great palate, but a fairly simple taste. Misses bitterness. (33cl bottle from Bierparadijs)
3.5Brown head. Half-sweet. You can taste the yeast. Decent beer. Best "bruin/brown" (brune) bier I’ve had. Can also taste minerals in this one.
3.7Bottle 330ml @ My parent’s place
Pours brown with a few floties and a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, toffee, alcohol and dried fruits. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and light bitter with a long warm, toffee and fruity finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
3.4Bottle (33 cl) from bierzwerg.de. Hazy deep chestnut, some floaters, medium beige head. Sugary and malty with some nutty aromas, dried fruits, and subtle phenols. Medium bodied, soft carbonation. Sweet with medium bitterness.
2.3Bottle 75 cl. Pours brown red copper. Good yeast, little chocolate. Not too complex. Slightly one sided. Alcohol hidden pretty well.

2.9Bottled. Pours brown in color with a frothy off-white head. Bready, dark bread, malts in aroma, some yeast notes as well. Same bready malty flavor. One dimensional, nothing more nothing less.
3.4(bottle, 33cl) Hazy, murky brown colour with loads of floaties and a mid-sized tanned foamy head. Nutty toast-malty aroma with notes of caramel, leather and a tinge of molasses. Sweet flavour, full bodied with a soft carbonation. Toast-malty base with caramel, chocolate, notes of dried fruits and a mildly vinous Port-like touch; moderately sweet, toasty malty finish with notes of dried fruits and chocolate. 26.II.13
3.875 cl bottle. 2007 vintage.
Seems to be ok, no contamination detected. Sourish fruits, dark berries, yeast and spices on the nose. Same thing on the flavor with toffee and brown sugar also. Quite nice and nicely aged.
Maybe a 4.0 rating for this vintage bottle.
75 cl bottle.

Pours dark copper color with a medium head. Aroma of caramel, dark malts, ripe fruits and spices. Flavor of spices, dark malts, dark ripe fruits and some yeast.
3.5330ml bottle. Pours dark brown with no head and the fizz shook all the bits up. Aroma is caramel, toffee and raisin. Taste is sweet with toffee and caramel. Raisin finish with a toffee aftertaste. Drinks below the strength.
3.7Torrified? Really. Ok then. Err, smells of toast, I’ve finally had a beer that I can say smells of toast. SNOWDAY! WOOP!!!
3.2Malziger, weinartiger Geruch, Trauben. Süßer Start ins Geschehen. Süßmalzige Mitte, Schokolade, weinartig, kaum Alkohol. Abgang dichtmalzig, schwer und süß. Überraschend liquide, könnte aber noch komplexer sein. Ansonsten recht gut.
3.3Bottle: Cloudy, amber coloured, small off-white foamy layer, robust sweet-malty to toasty nose, caramelly and nutty aromas included, fruits and alcohol underneath; solid sweet flavour, some yeasty bitterness detectable, full bodied and a bit fizzy; lingering yeasty bitter and sweet malty finish, some warming alcohol in the aftertaste. Surely good, but not exciting…
3.9Nice dark amber color, clear with just the minimal head on top after a little bit. Some alcoholic aroma, kind of expected from a 10º belgian strong ale, remembering distilled spirits, maybe herbs and grass too. Light sweet and bitterness, mixed perfectly. Soft carbonation but at the first impression looks more than it really is, medium to full body with a clear bitter finish. Overall an excellent beer, really well balanced and enjoyable at any time.
3.7Dark amber brown colour, medium foamy slightly mokka coloured head, yeasty slightly sweet bitter smell, bitter cacoa like taste flowery sweet fruity a bit sour but a pretty dry aftertaste with just a bit cacao and bitterness lasting.
3.875 cl bottle @ home, BBE 24.02.2012
Aroma is sweetish with orange peel. some toffee typical to aged belgian ales and brown sugar. Flavour has raisins, some orange peel and brown sugar. Finishes with distant vinegar, cardboard and moldy cellar notes. Also some warming alcohol in the aftertaste. The BBE date is quite exact; I have a feeling that this wouldn’t have improved with any more aging.
75 cl bottle vintage 2007? @ Timo A
Still sweet and lots of raisins. Well, it seems that I was wrong with the aging – if you do it in the right conditions. Harsh score estimate: 3.7.
4.5medium sweetness, lightly bitter, caramel, coffee, black, clear, tan foam, long finish, lively, light body, slick feel,
4.1Very dark unclear burgundy, more brown high up in the glass, thick beige head.
The nose is mostly sweet and roasted (almost to the point of being smoky), red fruits and some alcohol.
The taste very much delivers on the nose’s promise, it’s a pleasant full and roasted taste with a solid dose of sugars but never cloying; the alcohol is well hidden yet there is a warming glow (after all this is 10%), raisins, dark chocolate. All of this is balanced by an almost scotch ale like touch, slightly bitter.
The aftertaste is rather smooth, subtly roasted, still quite sweet, no lingering alcohol, again a little vegetable bitterness reminding me of a scotch.
Overall a quite complex and evolving taste; Ecaussines’ strongest is by far its most convicing brew and much, much more interesting than the ultrablonde or ultra ambrée.
3.5Bottle at DØE. Brown colour with a nice beige head. Aroma and flavour of caramel, yeast, dried fruit, malt and alcohol.
