3.9 Big thanks to bring for "bring"ing this beer to a tasting. You’re the man, Barry. Pours a hazy golden color with a one finger white head leaving a ring around the glass as it settles. Aroma is very pleasant with honey, pale malt, spice, yeast, and mild sherry oxidative notes. Hey, it is over 6 years old. Flavor is good and sweet with pale malt, lots of honey and spice, Belgian yeast, and a little light fruit, especially apple and pear. Sherry is definitely in there as well, but there’s not too much of it. Nice and sweet on the palate with medium body and mild carbonation that belies the age of this beer. Drinkability is pretty high. This beer is very good overall.
3.7 Bottle 75cl. Light unclear medium amber orange color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, toasted, caramel, oxidide, fruity, sherry. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20090922]
3.6 75 cL bottle. Pours hazy yellow to orange with a small white head. Aroma is citrusy, orange fruity and oxidised malty. Sweet orange fruity, peachy and citrusy flavoured. Distinct yeasty presence. Fruity phenolic flavoured into a medium dry finish.
3.8 Bottled. Golden colorued. Unclear. Dense off white head. Citrus, spice and fruits in the aroma. Flavour of fruits, spice, yeast and light alcohol. Medium to full bodied. fruity and spiced end. Has a nice light alcholtoch on lips and palate
3.6 Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of fiulijn. Pours a hazy yellow with an off-white head. Oxidized and very pleasant and sophisticated Sherry aroma. Rich body, fruity and pleasant again with an oxidized edge that really rounds it off pleasantly. Low in carbonation but high in alcohol. Yummy! Thanks Alex. 220909
3.7 750, corked and baled. thanks, dany! so stoked about this. pours a deeply hazy, unusual, and very pretty pale yellow. no head, no lace. huuuuge raisin and fig nose. other light sweet touches in there as well, but its all about those two notes. sticky sweet flat body. creamy raisin, fig, toffee, and butterscotch mid palate, complemented well by a soft tawny port undertone. faintest hint of carb at the end, joined by some warming alcohol. an attractive big belgian thats benefitted from the cellar in its own sweet way.
4.1 Bottle from a trade with Dickinsonbeer. Thanks Paul! Aroma is very yeasty but smooth - none of that spent grain/wheat sharpness that I don’t like: a fruity yeast, just a bit plain. Nice even golden color with a fat white head. Flavor is not very yeasty at all: sweet wheat, apple, that grape flavor that many Trappist quads have, brown sugar, even a faint roast. Very full and flavorful.
3.9 750ml bottle, bottled 12/12/02, tasted on december, hazy amber-orangeish hue, with an off white head, yeasty, fruity, honeyed pale malt nose with some mild peachy, apricot, candied orange peel, marmalade esters, with a faint spicy accent, within a warming aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a yeasty, honeyed pale malt, fruity character of marmalade, candied orange, tangerine peels, and dried apricot, peach flavors, with a honeyish mellow, velvety warmth mouthfeel, leading towards a honeyish candyish, fruity, warming finish. This one aged very well.
4.0 750ml via trade with moejuck I believe, way back when. Pours orange with a tan head. Nose is sweet and quite fruity with a big apple fruity feeling. Taste is spiced rich and fruity.very smooth and very light for the abv. Pretty tasty.
4.1 750ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazed burnt orange color with zero head. Tons of sweet candied dark fruits and malt on the nose. Flavor was sweet with malt and some baking spices. Brew was medium/ full in body. A damn good Belgian Ale.
3.5 Bottle, at BA Throwdown #2. Pours a golden reddish color, creamy lacing, nice head. Bright cider nose, Belgian yeast, some mellow notes. Creamy notes of vanilla and caramel. Some interesting creamy maltiness, with lots of wheat. Drinkable, held up very well, very good.
4.1 Tasted 8/19/08. 750ml cork and cage. Upon opening, the cork is stinky and darkened. Pours a hazy body with a golden orange hue. Slight trace head with no pop when it was opened. Candy nose with hints of grapes, citrus and berries. Good nose! Ever so slight vinuous note. Full bodied with a solid yet melded burn. Typical Unibroue character with a nice mix of citrus and honey. Medium roasted sweet malts. As complex as this beer is, I keep going over and over the honey and citrus flavors. Stickt finish with a faint slight hop character. So smooth with flavors of graham crackers and lemon acidity. Moderate effervescence. So good! And I still have one left!
3.6 [1512-20080704] 20floz bottle. Florally sweet malt aroma has heavy hay straw notes and hints of floral lemon. Murky, light brown orange body with quick white bubbles and lots of floaties. Belgian yeast flavour also has muted hay and malt and lemon yeast. Medium body seems a little flat. Interesting to try, holding its age fairly well. (c/o tupalev, w/ him, jerc, manuchampions) Aside: This was the bottle jerc and I brought back with us from Montreal c/o Glouglouburp via HogTownHarry for tupalev, who then kindly shared it with us!
3.5 Courtesy of BeerBuzzMontreal, thank you! I was fully aware this brew was about 6-7 years of age.. rendering it a completely different animal then it was originally intended. Poured orange hue. Taste was toffee and alcohol. Reminded me, unfortunately, of Lucifer with a quarter shot of vodka. Some citrus notes apparent. Medium bodied. Tasted like it was once legendary, but a little too aged- yielding it difficult to rate.
3.6 750mL split with pwn3d. Pours a bright cloudy orange with small head. The aroma is fruit and alcohol. Im guessing this is around 15% abv now that its aged for several years. The taste is very strong - with fruit again. I wish I could try this when it was first released. However, still a good beer considering the high alcohol.
3.9 Lots of people to thank for this one. First off to Harry - who saw that I was in search of this and posted it in the Eastern Canada forum to see if he could trade for it, for me (thanks Harry!). Next to rastacouere, who generously donated the bottle for nothing in return (yet! It will be repaid) - such is the generosity of a great ratebeerian! And finally thanks to Jerc and Mabel for carting this back from Mondial for me - now that’s a team effort! I shared the bottle, now very nicely aged, with Jerc, Mabel and Jon. Nice yeasty aroma - fruity, musty. Medium yellow, hardly any head. Great taste - very fruity, very sweet, very strong (still). Complex yet very drinkable, but potent - this has aged wonderfully well - a truly great beer. Thank you everyone!!
3.6 750mL bottle dated January 9, 2003. Poured brilliant brighter golden with a short-lived cap of white head and a whole lot of rising carbonation. The aroma picked up stronger peppery spices with medium-skinned fruits laced with alcohol.. digging deeper unearthed some oaky and tannin notes, very faint vinegar-dusted cherry, and another layer of fruit. The flavor had more of the fruit with a strong yeasty component (black pepper and banana mostly).. some lighter sherry-like oxidation notes around the edges (which worked well here).. finished warm, but remarkably well-balanced. Medium-bodied and almost slick on the palate with high carbonation.. really bubbled up and got tacky right at the finish. This held up very well, just sweetening up a bit and changing the texture.
3.9 Sample from a brown bottle, 750 ml, "vertical" tasting of Unibroue (from 10 to 17) at Philippe Wouters’ on April 4 2008; eye: apple juice, quite effervescent, clear; nose: stale, cork, Madeira; mouth: cork, Madeira, citrusy, honey, carbonated finale in honey and Madeira, full body, nice balance FRANÇAIS Échantillon d’une bouteille brune, 750 ml, dégustation « verticale » de Unibroue (de la 10 à la 17) chez Philippe Wouters, 4 avril 2008; oeil : jus de pomme, très effervescente, claire; nez : éventée, bouchon, madère; bouche : bouchon, madère, citronnée, miel, finale carbonatée mielleuse et madère, corsée, bel équilibre
3.8 750 ml corked and caged bottle poured a clear gold with a lasting creamy white head. Aromas of pear, apple, light spice, light carmel and a hint of yeast. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, pear, spice and light pineapple with a smooth lingering spice finish. This beer aged very nicely!
3.5 Thanks to Aaron for this one. Gold color with an effervescent head. Sweet fruit and yeast aroma. Flavor shows some caramel and a buttery aftertaste. Thick bodied.
4.7 I found a companion for my only other sample of this just last night. Thanks to the IN BAs for providing me with the whereabouts of this one. Bottle date of 10-10-2002. Score! As much as I have looked forward to trying this, I just hope that the cork has held up. The pop was light, but it allayed all my fears. I poured this into a tulip. It has an inch, maybe more, of head. It is a very light golden yellow. The second and last pour creates two inches of foam. The nose is complex. A fruity smell from the yeast is followed by lime and orange. The taste begins with lime and orange in the front. These give way to sweeter apples and even cherries. For as light as the color is, I sure do taste some dark malt flavors in this one. The mouthfeel is thick, and coating does not seem the proper term. I would say cloying, except I am enjoying every aspect of this beer, including its cloying mouthfeel. Drinkability is good. I am slogging through the bottle in no time. Unibroue is one of the finest breweries in the world. Their special releases are meant to be aged, and this specimen gives me hope for the many of their beers that I am storing. 3.5 750ml bottle labeled March 3, 2003. Poured a medium golden color with a smaller sized white head. Aromas of yeast, fruity, bananas, spicy, and some citrus. Tastes of sweet fruitiness, apples, and lighter citrus. Thinner and lighter body. Alcohol hidden. The aromas weren’t bad, but the tastes may have suffered in the past 5 years.
3.6 750, thanks to Ibrew2or3! Pours a cloudy apricot with a white ring of foam. Light aroma of apricots and citrus... subliminal suggestion from the color? Spicy fruit taste, overlaid by oxidized apples. Dry finish.
4.0 Bottle, thanks so much Beershine! Complex nose - citrus, cobbwebb, light raspberry nose. Hazy golden, low head. Well developed blend of flavors - spicy, fruity, grape dryness. Bone dry body, light sparkly. Orange peel and mango aftertaste.
3.6 Bottle. Faint copper color with a phenolic, malt aroma. Sweet and even-keeled with some nice dark fruits. Slightly spicy.
4.0 Light golden in color. A lot of dark sweet fruits in this even though it is so light - very nice and suprising.
3.9 75 cl. bottle dated March 3, 2003 . Pours a cloudy straw color with a white head that has black speckles in it. Has a citrusy, yeasty, spicy smell. Super strong taste of lemons, limes, black pepper, and tart malts. Medium bodied with a lively, zesty mouthfeel. The 11% tries to hide itself but ultimately comes through in the finish as a pleasing belly warmer. A Wit beer on steriods. Notes;(Sept 2004) bought a case of this in 2003 and have found two bottles so far that were dead flat. A great beer otherwise
4.0 The 11 might be my favorite Unibroue anniversary ale. It’s superb. Opaque peach color with a nice head. Apple aroma with some alcohol and caramel notes. Warm and full-bodied. Alcohol is well-hidden in the flavor. A happy beer. (re-rated Dec 2007: pours pale golden color with strong effervescence. Complex syrupy smell, like waffles. Highly aromatic. Tastes a little too sweet for me with characteristic Unibroue flavors. Bursty, slightly sticky mouthfeel. I could downgrade the previous ratings but have too many fond memories of the beer to warrant that)
3.5 750ml, j’ai bien aimé cette bière très forte, belle couleur ambrée, belle saveurs, agréable en bouche, chaleureuse.
