3.5Bottle at "30 år av surt", on May 5, 2012 in Göteborg.
3.5Bottle at "30 år av surt" on May 5, 2012
75 cl.
Hazy copper color, smallish off-white head. Sweet, malty, spicy, alcohol scent. Spicy, lactic, alcohol taste. Spicy alcohol aftertaste. Warming alcohol. Medium to smooth mouthfeel, sort of harsh finish. Medium bitterness.
4.030 år surt. Pours cloudy mahogany wrh a small off white head. Aroma is malty caramel bready spicy and a bit fruity. Flavor is sweet malty and spicy in front adding more peppery bitter and phenolic character in middle sistaining it to the end with nice fruity touch. Finishes dry malty and fruity with a great pungent touch.
3.7Bottle at "30 år av surt". Golden/amber beer, lasting off-white head. Sweetish yeasty aroma, fruity notes, marcipan. Marcipan flavor, yeasty, fruity, sweetish, some malt, roasted notes. A bit too sweet.
4.0Thanks to pushkinwow for popping this at the Ottawa tasting. Pours a dark brown with small white top. Aroma is special malts, yeast and grapes. Taste again is filled with grape, fig and malts. A little sweet but nicely complex.
3.7light hazy amber, apricots, caramel, apples, but flavors don’t stick out that much. Fairly rounded. Decent.
3.8Bottle shared by TimE. Glowing amber-orange, nice head. Oxidized, estery nose, spice, ginger, orange, honey, grains. Very fizzy, with alcohol and some metals, peach, esters, ginger. Nice, but the 2004 blew it away.
4.0750ml corked bottle pours a dirty amber color with a 2 finger light beige head that retains well and eventually settles to some spotted lacing. Aroma is dark fruits and some light roasty bitterness with some light hops bitterness and malty sweetness and yeasty finish. Modest carbonation and medium to heavy body with a little alcohol provide a tingling warming sensation on the palate. A very nice example of the style.
3.9750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled December 2009. Pours hazy reddish orange color with a nice 2 finger light khaki head with great retention that reduces to a lacing cap. Some spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, candi sugar, plum, raisin, apricot, molasses, biscuit, apple, and yeast spices. Some nice and interesting aromas. Taste of caramel, plum, apple, molasses, gold raisin, candi sugar, biscuit, and spicy yeast. Lingering notes of caramel, dark fruit, molasses, and spices on the finish for a bit. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a fairly creamy and slick mouthfeel. Very smooth drinking for 10%; with only a slight warming on the finish noticed. Good balance of flavors and spiciness. Overall this is a very nice Belgian strong pale. Interesting mix of flavors that come together very well.
3.4Murky orange with a lightning fast dissipating white head. Aroma of bready maly, yeast, alcohol, brown sugar and fruit peels. Taste of yeast, fruit, light pepper and mild alcohol. Dry and sudsy with a bit of alcohol burn.
3.6Gold/copper and hazy with some beige head. Aroma is belgian yeast with some brown sugar, dark fruit, candy. Hint of sweetness and fruity taste with a light tartness. Very solid, don’t notice the alcohol, finish is a bit sweet.
3.4bottle shared by murphym45 - doughy yeast, caramel malts and smooth. Toffee malts and fruity candy. Big chunky malts. Does not pair well with mexican food, but good on it’s own.
4.1750mL bottle, pours amber orange with an off-white head. Aroma of yeast, cinnamon and molasses underneath that fights through to the forefront eventually. Flavour of licorice, mint, yeast, sweet dried fruits and molasses. The aging has certainly done it well. Exquisite.
3.9Bottle. Aroma is hazy orange-amber with a medium sized pearly head. A bit grainy on palate. Aroma is beautifully mature combo of bubble gum, yeasty spice, sherry, rum-soaked cherries. Flavor follows suit, a bit of autolyzed yeast creeping in. Great depth overall, profound dried fruit and yeast complexities. Integrates alcohol well.
3.5A sweet, boozy sipper, highly typical of the brewer. Bronze with a lasting head. Aroma of ripe fruits. Thick mouthfeel. Tasty stew of souring summer fruits. Nice but no real departure from the brewer’s standard range. Bottle
3.1A: The pour is an orange-amber color with a thin layer of off-white foam.
S: Definitely a lot of oxidation happening here. Stale sugar, particularly brown sugar, with some cardboard. A fairly potent orange peel note, which is actually nice.
T: This is intensely sweet, but I suppose it works out alright. Lots of fruit character such as oranges, pears, apples, maybe strawberries. Some caramel, too, just for good measure. It’s still quite oxidized, despite what good flavors that are there.
M: The body is medium with a moderate carbonation.
D: Despite the flaws, this one wasn’t horrendous. Some decent points to it, which was pleasant in what was a lackluster lineup overall.
3.3clear brown small smooth offwhite head.
aroma : dry like dusty, sweet dark fruits like figs, caramel, malts. not really sweet as you might think from my description. faint alc. fant flowery note. Aroma reveals a strong beer but not much of a hint as to how it tastes. Let’s find out.
flavor is strong sweet dark fruits (like raisins, figs) syupy note, strong note of alc. I think the alc. is too easily detectable and it sort of makes the beer a little more cloying than what would be perfect. not much hops in this brew. the overall impression is syrup, dark fruits and alc.
3.7The beer pours a hazy brown-orange color with an off-white head. The aroma is heavy on the caramel malt and green apples. I also get a little bit of yeast mixed in.
The flavor is a mix of toffee, green apples, candy and brown sugar, alcohol and yeast. The flavor is very nice and is well balanced between the malt and fruit flavors.
Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
3.9750ml bottle. Pours a mostly clear medium amber color with a large yellowish head that leaves film on the beer. Great aroma, caramel apple like the 15 but less oxidation present. Spicy and Belgian. Sweet caramel apple on the flavor as well. Belgian yeast is huge. Medium-full bodied but not syrupy, with lively carbonation. Great beer overall. These guys do Belgiums well.
3.90.75L corked bottle brought home from ØlKonsortiet, Aalborg. A dense fingerthickblond head atop of a dark copper colored body. Aroma is sweet, soft and vinous. Rounded malts, caramel and tinned, juicy fruits. Taste is invitingly sweet. Caramelly malts with honey notes. Fruit-cake fruitiness. Mild spices and mild bitterness underneath. Soft and vinous in the mouth. Almost full-bodied. Complex, mouth-warming end. Elegant!
3.6Big deep offwhite head. Hazy amber body with light carbonation. Musty fruity papery aroma with buttery caramel notes. Dry-sweetish earthy fruity honey taste with resiny notes. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Lightish body. Dry spicy gingery honey aftertaste with earthy musty notes. Really nice and subtle. (0.75l bottle, shared by Ole_R.)
3.975 cl bottle. Best before 2010-12-31. Golden orange colour with a huge white creamy head. Aroma is very fruity. Heavy notes og apples, yeast, caramel, nuts. Some sugar. Starting to oxidize. Flavour is well rounded. Notes of malts, yeast, apples, sugar and hops. Medium long aftertaste.
3.8Bottle shared by OleR. Thanks! Pours a sparkly, hazy, golden yellow with a creamy white head. Tons of butterscotch in the aroma, definitely oxidized this one. It really works though. Some alcohol, some vanilla, light fruit notes. A lot of sweetness on the flavour side of things, with a certain sharpness from the alcohol. There is a bitterness in there, but it’s mellow. Cleans things up a bit in the finish, though. Medium to light bodied, with lively carbonation. I really liked it. Drinkable, but at the same time hearty and strong.
4.1Pours a muddy clay red with a barely noticeable amount of carbonation. The nose is not as in depth as the Unibroue 17; picking up alcohol, fruits and sugars. Taste is incredible smooth, caramel, fruit, raisins and dates, a little spice, a little burn from the alcohol on the way down. Wonderful!
4.0750ml. Pours a hazy dark honey amber with a three finger fizzy head that faded into a thin topper fairly quickly. The nose is caramel, light tobacco and fruit. The taste is dates, spicy yeast, fruits, toffee, maple syrup and more tobacco-esque flavors in the finish. Medium semi-prickly mouthfeel. A little alcohol burn on the very end and pretty warming. Decent. I’m glad I let it age as I can image this was much sweeter when young.
4.4This has been in a box in the dark at room temp for some years so I was worried that it might have taken a hit. But, happily for me, it just got better! Poured a big, sudsy, foamy, frothy, light tan head that settled out after a bit and a little lace. Color is a lovely clear, medium amber. Aroma is big bread yeast, malt, a little metalic, and malt. Flavor is like aroma minus the metalic and plus a little fruitiness and malt sweetness, but cut with the carbonic acid and the bitterness of yeast and hop. Body is excellent - mouth filling and the bubbles are just right for the malt et al. Finish is like flavor and slowly fades in a medium long period. Very well rounded beer and easy drinking.
3.6Pours hazy orange copper with distinct cream head. Pleasant sweet caramel aromas overlying some fruity hop zestiness with a touch of unibroue ale yeast character. Medium full body, chewy mouthfeel, sweet caramel with lingering yeast flavours and a touch of anise and tartness on the finish, even some mu‘assel apple-tobacco like flavours. Bitterness is there, however subdued by the higher gravity.
3.0750 mls of overly sweet disappointment purchased at Canal’s Hainesport. Poured an ugly muddy brown body underneath a bubbly beige head. Aroma is overly sweet with lots of caramel, molasses, toffee, cardboard, sugar, rotting fruit. Body is medium/full with a slick coating that isn’t to pleasant and soft carbonation. Flavors of sickly sweet things, sugar coated caramel, corn syrup over toffee, molasses flavored mapled syrup and a touch of toast. Man is this sweet.......hey Canada how about some Mother Fucking hops!!!
3.8Bottle Pours out hazy orange topped with a tall head. Aroma was of sweetness toffee, apples, cherries, and some spice. Taste was more of the fruit a wide variety might I add cherries, apples, berries, even some pit fruit. A good amount of malts and spice to balance it out.
3.8Celebrating my 900th rating tonight (October 2008)... so went to my beer cellar, and was looking for something special. Found this lonely bottle of Unibroue 16, celebrating their 16th anniversary a few years back, and had not tried it yet. It was time to open up this baby ! Like other Unibroue strong ales, this one had a huge caramel off-white foamy head that stays forever (almost) and creates patchy lacing all around. The brew itself is caramel-orange in colour with lots of very tiny sediments floating all over. Beautiful tiny bubble active carbonation too. On the back of the bottle, 04-12-2006 is written in small. The nose is pretty much on the red apple side, with the usual Unibroue yeast and a touch of alcohol and sourness. The taste is a mix of lots of fruits, like the red apples re-appear at first, with some citrus (lemon, orange) in the middle, and a little bit of peaches in the aftertaste. All along, we find some hints of caramel and spices. Not really sweet, not too spicy and with a tad of bitterness. This beer is retired now, and that was my only bottle... so good trying you... Unibroue 16.
