Unibroue 1837

Unibroue 1837

1837 is a blond beer, slightly cloudy, refermented in the bottle and contains 7% alcohol. It is a great beer, relative to the abbey family of beers. It is brewed from a blend of Québec-grown raw wheat, lightly roasted barley and a hint of spices. It delivers a great sensation of freshness.

4.1 [2435-20090809] 650mL bottle. Fruity spice yeast aroma has nice bread spices infused throughout. Hazy, light orange brown body with a long-lasting foamy white head. Fruity yeast flavour has sugary malt and a long sweet finish. Medium body. Yum! Very tasty and refreshing, seems to be in excellent shape. (@ Beerfest at the Condo; w/ DuctTape, jerc, others)
3.5 Bouteille 341ml. (2006)
3.7 Poured out a hazy yellow beer, totally unfiltered with a huge puffy white head that did die and left no more than a ring. Very little spotty lacing and a tiny amount of sediment. Awesome aroma! Stiff spice, bananas early on, more nice warm spice, some citrus (orange) and mild yeast. The taste is fairly mild with a faint touch of alcohol, a bit of yeast - which is very balanced and excellent - seemingly better than other Unibroque stuff. Soft and balanced. The mouth feel is smooth with some heated spice on the finish. Pretty much medium bodied. An excellent beer.
3.8 Straw yellow mildly cloudy with a thin white head that doesn’t seem to want to leave and had ok lacing, nice looking beer but not great. Sweet flowery yeast and a touch of banana aromas fill the nose smooth and enjoyable but maybe a touch mild. Sweet smooth wheaty taste, along with your typical Unibroue yeast flavor, very floral tasting along with some mild spices, no alcohol can be detected. Smooth and refreshing with an enjoyable flavor great beer and I’ll pick it up again
3.6 Bottle. Cloudy yellow with a thick foamy head with poor retention and average lacing. Aroma is cloves, classic unibroue yeast, spices, apples, bread malt and sugar. Flavor is malt, caramel, fruits and yeast. Medium body with fizzy carbonation.
3.4 Bottled (from lahoublonniere.be). Yellowish golden colour with small white head. Aroma is some yeast, spices, caramel malts and fruits. Flavour is quite much the same. As it all warms up it gets a bit more sweet and also alcohol starts to show up a bit. Still quite solid as most other Unibroue brews.
4.2 In my imaginary country of Québec, the 1837 can be found in 341 ml bottles only in some SAQ store (check SAQ.com to find out), government owned and mismanaged. It had been a while since I had that beer, that had not impressed me much on my first attempts. I have today been most delighted by the delicate sweetness, fruity (apricots, citrus) and slightly spicy (I think cloves and others) and almost nectar-like texture. I’ll lower my rating if the next one is not as good but I’m very impressed today...
3.7 Purchased at Super Marche Rahman in Montreal. I don’t think this is attainable in the US, but I could be mistaken. This beer is very good, everything you would expect in a Unibroue palate wise, but not much flavor. It really tastes like the canvas backing of the Éphémère franchise. Possibly the backing of several of those fruit beers. The result is highly sessionable, smooth, bubbly unibroue.. bready and light.
3.7 Bottle. Pours a light orange body with carbonation. Aroma is yeast. Taste is light, but good.
2.9 750 ml bottle. Poured hazy yellow with a nice fluffy white head. Nose typical of Unibroue beers, a bit musty, funky and spicy. Taste comes off a bit hot and musty. I don’t know if this bottle is old but the taste gets crusty very quickly. Where’s the freshness advertised here? I won’t finish this bottle.
3.0 Slightly hazy golden coloured body with a nice frothy off-white coloured head. Aroma of coriander, wheat, canned corn, sugar, hay and a little spice. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong spice flavour up front with a little malt taste and hardly any hops. Aftertaste shows some wheatie characteristics with a bit of a tripel taste and not much else. Overall, a decent trip - good to try and nice in this area. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased at Couche-Tard in the Place d’Armes in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on 20-February-2006.
3.4 341ml bottle from the SAQ as part of a trade for a server cabinet :) The aroma is yeasty and spicy citrus Pours a hazy golden amber with a nice white head The taste is spicy yeasty and citrusy Very nice why can we not buy this in Ontario
4.2 12oz bottle courtesy of boutip. Pours a hazy amber with a white head. Smells of perfume, wildflowers, some underlying funk. Tastes of straw hay, wildflowers and has a nice dry finish with a touch of tartness.
3.4 341mL bottle. Poured slightly hazy medium golden with a dusting of white head and a light ring. The aroma was spicy overall with white pepper and tangy wheat over a honey and pale malt base.. light fruits and floral notes emerge with warmth. The flavor opened with tart lemony-wheat on the tip of the tongue.. seemed like clover honey starring at the base, with lesser notes of bread crumbs and pale malts.. drier and spicy on the back and finish with peppery notes and warm honey. Medium-bodied with a thicker feel on the palate.. carbonation was tight and filling, but it managed to keep its flow together where some other Unibroue beers have faltered (for me).. dry on the finish. Solid brew.
3.3 pours a hazy apricot color with a sizeable frothy head. Aroma of unibroue yeast, peach, apple, and cider. Falvor is very nice- maintains the peachy flavor with that distinctive yeast that this brewery does so well. Palate is light, but the drinkability is great- excellent session brew. Well done overall.
3.3 Pours golden with nice frothy head. Aroma is cider, peach, and lots of citrus and spicy yeast. Flavor is quite fruity- lots of nectar with a nice balance of clove yeast and a dash of caramel malt. Very drinkable. Palate is average- lots of carbonation but smooth.
3.1 Bottle 75cl @ Cnudde Tasting.. Clear medium yellow color with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, white head. Aroma is moderate malty, toasted, moderate yeasty, wood, coriander. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet with a average to long duration. Body is medium to light, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft. (290308)
3.7 Bottle, thx to thewolf. Vintage 2004. Golden / yellow colour with a white head. Aroma is pineapple, peaches, yeast. Flavour is pineapple, peaches, yeast, spices. Full body nice beer.
2.9 (Bottle) Pours a cloudy golden body with a small quickly dissipating white head. Aroma of grass, lemon, wheat, and spoiled citrus. Flavor of lemon, sour mash, and coriander.
3.1 (Bottle 75 cl) Courtesy of fonefan. Clear golden with a tall and lively white head. Aroma dominated by yeast and coriander. Medium body with a heavy carbonation yet still a fairly pleasant mouthfeel. Flavours are mainly sweet pale malts and coriander with the finish being short and dry without much hoppiness. A classic Unibroue - and a little boring. 290308
3.4 Clear golden with large white head. Sweet fruity aroma with yeasty and coriander notes. Flavor is sweet with notes of yeast, coriander and fruits. Ends sweet.
3.7 Bottle, 75cl corked, thx to thewolf. Vintage 2004. It pours an almost clear, yellowish golden body with a medium-sized white head on top. Nice aroma with peach, some spices, pineapple, pale malt and a little yeasty touch. Pleasant flavor too, with peach, citrus and pineapple and some bitterness, as well as pale malt and a little spiced flavor. There’s a litte yeasty note in the flavor too, and it finishes spiced and fruity. Full-bodied and effervescent in the mouth. I usually appreciate the Unibroue beers, and this is no exception. A good blend of aromas and flavors, and good drinkability. (080301)
3.6 The Fonefan/Brugmansia Cnudde tasting. Courtesy of Fonefan/Brugmansia. Golden with a lot of rising bubbles (does not affect mouthfeel though) and a nice big head. The aroma signals "Unibroue" - malt and spicy yeast and some fruit. The flavour has sweetness, notes of citrus, malt, spicy yeast, coriander - and it’s refreshing, pleasant and easy to drink, but is so typical Unibroue that I will not be able to remember this particular one as an individual among the Unibroue beers.
3.9 750ml @ fourquet Fourchette, Chambly Quebec. Pours a medium cloudy blonde. Very similar to Caracole Saxo in both flavor & appearance. Great beer IMO. Fruity, yeasty, medium spiced with coriander, curacao. Excellent
3.1 Hazy pale yellow with a white head. Fruity and spicy yeast aroma, with some coriander. Dry and spicy flavour, some pineapple notes from the yeast.
2.6 75 cl bottle@fonefan/Brugmansia’s Cnudde tasting. Pours almost clear yellow with white head. Mild coriander and dry malt aroma. Flavour is much along the same lines but with a more present oxidised note. Ends light bitter and dry with a light acidic touch.
3.9 Tasting at thewolf. Pours a yellow with a head that looks like dishwashing foame (but tastes nothing like it) that disappears quickly. Very nice fruity aroma (a bit like althe drops) sweet. Sweet and fruity flavour. Quite olie and vinious and still fresh and sparkly. A very nice palate.
3.4 (on bottle, thanx to thewolf) Tropical fruits; pinaapple, passionfruit and that good old unibroue yeastaroma. Carbonation like champagne. The tatse is like a lemonpop, the finish comes through with a nicefullness and more sweet, rounded feel- Lingers quite some time.
