Unibroue Maudite

Unibroue Maudite

In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.

Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.

Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

4.6 From a bottle to a glass. Pours a Murky brown amber color with a massive thick frothy creamy silky head. Aroma is spices upfront, cinnamon, coriander, cloves, banana, raisins, plums, grapes, figs, malt sweetness. taste follows the aroma. Medium heavy mouthfeel. Very tasty Belgian style beer!
1.1 Worst beer I ever had, and I've sampled many. It tastes like pure rubbing alcohol. I'll never have this again.
4.0 Yeasty, fruity aroma. Pour is cloudy mahogany with a frothy off-white foam that forms a thick cap in the center. Taste is of yeast, raisin, clover, roast malts, plum and apple. A great Belgium dubbel.
3.6 Spice, great strong beer smooth not too much of an alcoholic hit. Malty?? Like this beer 3 or so
3.2 Pours clear dark brown, with off-white foam head. Caramel in aroma and taste, some malt too. (Velp 202003)
3.3 Bottle. A- Cheese, coriander, pepper, slightly floral. A- Brown color, dark liquid, beige head. T- White pepper, raisins, coriander. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, spiced finish. O- A year past the best by date so no idea how this should compare but not bad. Very heavily spiced with seemingly coriander and something else I can't quite place at the moment. Decent.
3.9 16oz bottle from Beers of Europe and drunk on 27/09/2006. This was at the time an absolute mind-blower, because it was by a mile the most accurate Belgian-style beer I’d tried that wasn’t from Belgium (or at least Benelux). Actually they remain some of the best beers of these styles outside Belgium. Wonderful dubbel.
3.8 Botella de 34,1 cl. Fecha de consumo 31/12/2021. Color marrón con abundante espuma, carbonatación media. Aroma a caramelo, chocolate, uvas pasas, ciruela.
3.5 12 oz bottle. Pours a light brown with a big tight white head. Scents of barnyard and yeast. Big raisin flavors some spices with some nuttiness. Classic Dubbel. Low carbonation. Sour finish.
3.4 Bottle in a glass. Pours amber with an off-white head. Aroma of spicy yeast, some pale and sweet caramel malts, and very faint hops. Flavor the same. A decent dubbel but not my favorite style of beer.
4.4 8/2/19 Wjth A & Littles making steak and playing Playstation. Nose is tons of spicy yeast. Flavor is big and warm with lots of Belgian spice and hints of dark fruit. Warm and bright simultaneously. Palate is huge and very fluffy. Perfect Belgian ale. Overall, a fantastic dubbel that lives up to everything is good and expected from Unibroe.
3.6 Bouteille, 0,341l. Couleur orange sombre.
3.2 Bevuta in bottiglia da 33. Aroma che spacca il pubblico. Rosso, marroncino arancio, molto torbido. Fgr
4.0 12 oz bottle allowed to warm from a 45degF refrigerator for 10 minutes, poured into a 16 oz goblet. Tall, creamy white head with a slightly tan tint. Beer is dark brown from the front but amber-ruby through a backlight. Ample carbonation. The lacing is not too thick, but nice looking. Aroma is bread, dark fruits, and spice. After a few minutes, the spiciness begins to become the most prominent part of the aroma. Feel is on the thin side of moderate, but quite effervescent. Taste is earthy, with just a touch of drying astringency. The fruitiness trends toward cherry rather than raisins or figs. This gives it a "new world" take on the style while remaining true to the Belgian origins. Quite enjoyable.
4.2 This is a good beer. Really dark orange in color. Cloudy and hazy. Good alcohol content hidden pretty well. Smelled a little bit citrusy like an orange a little enjoyable
3.4 March Madness 2019 - Not my style. Not a bad Belgian...but nothing I really like. Earlier Rating: 3/22/2019 Total Score: 3.4 Earlier Rating: 3/22/2019 Total Score: 3.5 Earlier Rating: 3/22/2019 Total Score: 0.5
4.1 I hate to say this, but the first thing I thought of when I tasted this was "Blue Moon". Not in a bad way, but MUCH better than Blue Moon...just reminded me of that citrusy Belgian-style that so many domestic brewers are shooting for. This is how it should be though! Flavors are full but in a balanced way. Nice and hoppy too. Appearance is more in the medium brown side, cloudy but not quite thick and murky. Something like this straight from Belgium would probably be in the $4-6 range, so figure I'm getting the North American discount. Go Unibroue GO!! Keep brewing and I'll keep sampling.

3.9 Opaque. Colour is a rusty brown. Head has little lasting power. Aroma is rye bread and caramel. Taste is Christmas cake and plum.
4.0 Bottle. It pours a murky copper color with a tall tan color head. The aroma is caramel, bready, and dark fruits. Very smooth. Tasty.
3.8 A bottle from my colleague on return from leave in Saskatchewan, cheers James! Aroma: malt, dundee cake. Appearance: opaque oxtail soup, head quickly dissipates to nothing. Palate: full bodied and sticky, soft carbonation. Complex, predominantly sweet finish. Taste: heavily sweet and bitter, well balanced. Paprika, some vanilla. Satisfying and unassuming, the 8% ABV sneaks up from behind, a well-crafted beverage.
