Upland Raspberry

Upland Raspberry

(Previously labeled Raspberry Lambic). Raspberries have a sweet tartness to them already, so they make a perfect pairing with sour ales. Our Raspberry fruited ale has a fresh berry aroma with a touch of floral and wine-like notes, followed by a rich raspberry flavor. Reddish in hue with a pink foam appear upon pouring, with zesty amounts of carbonation. Finish is dry, with mouth-watering tanginess and raspberry flavor.

(Old description). In the spring of 2006, I brewed 300 gallons of top-fermented beer using wild yeast to create a Belgian-style Lambic. We conditioned the beer in oak casks and then initiated a secondary fermentation in the casks using whole fruit from Huber’s Orchard in Starlight, Indiana. You should experience a tart, almost sour taste balanced by the aromatic and richly flavorful addition of whole raspberries - perfect to share with friends, and a platter of good cheese and fresh fruit. - Caleb Staton, Head Brewer

4.8 Thanks! 750 ml. split / sampled @’t Schooltje. 10.9.13 Vintage. Deep dark raspberry, vibrant, no head. Nose is insane raspberry, puckering, strongly lactic, lemon sourness quality to the fruit but very vibrant, real fruit, all the same, touch mineral,… Taste is same amazing, vibrant lactic, touch vinegar, lemon puckering raspberry, very tart & puckering but the fruit is immense, lingering sourness with some raspberry pits in the back,… Body is puckering ,drinks amazingly well despite the sourness. Really awesome.
4.0 Bottle. APPEARANCE: clear red beer, small very unstable white head. NOSE: dense raspberries, very fruity and sour, little lactic, oak, somewhat syrupy. TASTE: very very sour, dries out actually, very lactic, bit over the top? Even for a sourhead... But loved it!
3.7 Bottle, shared at RBAG 2015, sent to me by b3shine, thanks Beau! Pinkish orange, acetic sourness and raspberry juice, nice combo , but enamel-stripping acidity.
4.6 Rasberries and cherries in aroma. Fruits came through in flavor and the added wild yeast made this grew exceptional. Dry and fruity finish.
3.5 A: tons of rich raspberry jam aroma. Very slight funk. A: dark red color with non existent head. gushed slightly. T: super sour backed by a nice fresh raspberry flavor. Not as rich as it smells. Mainly just sour and raspberry though not much besides that. P: thick and viscous with a resounding pucker. Low carbonation left in the beer after the initial gush. Very acidic O: good frambois but not great. Good flavor from the raspberries and sour sour sour. Wanted some more funk and nuances
3.8 Raspberry jam great raspberry and cherry aroma. Palate us thuck and cloy sweet. A little too much like my krueks and fruit lambics drier. Still good brew.
3.8 Shared bottle. Pours hazy ruby brown with fizzy off-white. Aroma is balsamic, raspberry, and plenty of sour funk. Flavor is very fruity and funky with bready notes, berries, and some oak character. Medium body and carbonation.
3.9 Refrigerated 75 cl brown bottle, 11/20/2013, corked and capped, from shrubber85, poured into a tulip. Translucent deep red with small pink head which dissipates quickly. Aroma is sour raspberry, medium body, medium/light carbonation, and little lacing. Taste is sour raspberry, oak, and rich raspberry. A shade not quite as sour as the persimmon, but very good.
3.1 Batch 3/10 bottled 11/20/2013. Aroma is rather fruity with quite a bit of jammy raspberry aroma. moderate acidity. Light oak notes and tropical fruit hiding in the background with medium light citrus. A touch acetic. Pours a slightly cloudy, bright, vibrant, red with a bit of a purple hue. Small pink head recedes quickly to the edges. Faint lacing and no legs. Flavor is exceedingly acidic; I should have saved some of the Tartuffe to cut this with. Moderate raspberry upfront with hints of oak and tropical fruit. As your palate adjusts the acidity becomes a bit more tolerable and you can pick up citrus fruit and more raspberry. Low bitterness, also a bit acetic. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Medium low acidic astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, this beer is way too sour. The acidity is really dialed up and somewhat chemically and acetic. Would make a nice raspberry vinagrette.
3.3 75cl, Batch 3.10 (bottled Dec. 20th 2013), no mention of ABV, exclusive American brew, with raspberries, thx alot to Vincent for bringing this over!, complex sour fruit brew, heavily sour/fruity and slightly woody/sweet, yet not balanced, cloudy, nearly no head, nice brew, yet very expensive!
3.4 Side by side tasting of the Upland Sour Reserve, Raspberry, Strawberry, Blueberry and Kiwi Lambic. Sour Reserve Blend 5: soft sour body, buttery, a tad floral as well 4.1/5 Kiwi: no real kiwi characteristics, extremely sour and lactic 2.9/5 Raspberry: one of the freshest raspberry aromas around. Afterwards all is sour and lactic 3.4/5 Strawberry: aroma is q bit chemical strawberry, the body and taste makes one remind of the Hanssens Oudbeitje, let it be a lot more sour 3.2/5 Blueberry: the nicest and tartest of the "Lambic" series we sampled 3.5/5 These beers are not lambics and should not be called as such. It is obvious that the sour character in this beer comes from lactic fermentation rather than a complex process of different families of bacteria and yeast. The aftertaste of all of the sampled "lambic" serie have a repelling sour finish...
4.4 Bottle thnx to geoffrey . Pours rather dark pink . Small , fast fading-to-nothing white head . Smell is pure raspberry , sour , with a herbal aspect . High carbo . Taste is very sour , raspberrys-to-the-maximum , bit sweetness even . Feels very natural fruity . Very sharp sour ending . Just like all other Uplands in the tasting ( 5 bottles ) this was very extreme, and probably not balanced at all - if you compare with the ’real’ lambics , yet I do love this one . Nice , but very simple ( sour bacteria added rather than a complex mixture of different Brettanomyces - species ) .
3.6 Bottle. Pours a hazy deep raspberry color, no head. Aroma is seedy raspberry, lemon juice, sour apricot. Taste is super acetic raspberry, sour cherry, wine grape, lemon juice. Out of control puckery. Just okay.
3.9 Bottle: Thanks, Chris. Lovely fuchsia, indigo, red-ish body, fully opaque with a light lavender head that fizzles instantly into thin air. Aroma of tart & sharp raspberry skin, lemon, a hint of cinnamon-y spice, yogurty lactic sourness, & tons of mixed berry flesh all around the edges. The taste is sour... Quite sour. Even more sour than the aroma would suggest. Puckering raspberry, balsamic vinegar, lemon Warhead candies, acetic lacto yeast, & just a touch of some vaguely woodsy musk in the finish; perhaps a little oaky. Dry fruit skin aftertaste, lingering raspberry & lemon. I’m a sucker for super sour shit & this really hit the spot.
4.1 Poured from bottle to glass. Hazy red hue with fizzy white head. Aroma is lactic, oak. Peppercorn, straw. Mouthfeel is fantastic with a medium body and zesty carbonation. Taste is sweet initially with a great sourness and finishing spicy. Overall this is great!

4.1 Taster from a bottle at Upland Sourfest. Totally hazy red / pink color. Awesome color. Thin ring of off-white head. Awesome big sour taste. Light spicy sour raspberry twang in the finish. 3.9 Location: 750 ml bottle from Upland, 5/16/14, Bottled 10/9/13 Aroma: The nose is full of raspberry and yeasty funk Appearance: It pours a dark red color with a fizzy, quickly dissipating beige head Flavor: The flavor is rather tart and funky, quite sour, with only a minimal sweetnes Palate: The body is medium, it has a fizzy carbonation, and a dry, mouth puckering finish Overall Impression: This is a really nice raspberry lambic. It doesn’t get even close to being sweet, just a really enjoyable, well-made lambic. Nicely done here.
