Upright Five (#5)

Upright Five (#5)

Five is a farmhouse pale ale that was born after enjoying a few small production European brews that use a heavy hand of hops. Ours blends several Mt. Angel grown varieties to create a deep and complex flavor with an underlying earthiness. Pale fruit aromas created during the fermentation brighten the profile and bring the beer balance.

Malts: organic pale,organic caramel

Unmalted: rolled barley

3.5 Draft sample at Oedipus International Beer Festival 2016. Amsterdam, The Netherlands. 02.07.2016. Pour it hazy golden color with small white head. Aroma lemons, little bit strawberry. Taste quite malty, sweet candy sugar, fruity, smooth texture, creamy, medium body, average carbonation, abrupt finish. Ok

3.5 On tap at Darby’s Gastown. Pours a clear golden with a white head. Aroma is grainy, with flowers and some tea notes. Taste is pretty the same with flower hoppy bitterness. Hoppy bitterness aftertaste. Not bad.
3.2 Quite bitter, a bit spicy and zesty. It tastes a lot like a mild IPA. It’s a good beer, but not very special.
3.3 Sampled from tap at the Oedipus International Beer Festival 2016. Clear, golden yellow with an off-white head. Sourish-fruity, slightly funky aroma of straw, lemon peel and some quince. Sourish-fruity, slightly funky taste of lemon peel, straw, a touch of grapefruit and hints of pineapple, followed by a medium long, moderately bitter, very dry and slightly tart finish. Medium body, a little astringent and slightly effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Okay.

More or less yeasty fruity tints. A lightly sharper fruity and grainy tint. Yeast, floral tones and some good bitterness. Nice. Aftertaste is bitter, fruity and light yeasty. Low carbo, creamy mouthfeel, good medium bodied.
3.8 (Upright Five (#5)) Bottle 650 ml at home, served into a big tulip, ABV 5.5% Deep orange coloured body, huge and very thick, soapy, white head, with great retention. Quite fruity aroma with peaches, some honey notes, wood, light funk, some malts. Nice taste with grass, faint citrus, orange peel, light peach, light wood. Quite bitter finish and aftertaste. Medium body with good carbonation. Pretty good, nice to drink with this hot weather.

3.1 Bottle to tulip. Hazy straw golden. Foamy head. Highly carbonated. Aroma is funk, yeast, faint herb/Fruit. Vague fruit sweetness overwhelmed by mineral and hop flavors. Head is tannish, messy.
3.7 Nicely done saison. Light citrus and hay with some resin. Pours orange amber with good head and lacing. Light bitter finish with some tang. Tap at Drake Eatery.
3.5 750ml bottle from www, craftbeerkings.com. Poured a hazy honey brownish/deep gold body with a HUGE crystal white head. Aroma is fruity, tropical fruits, lime, tangerine, lemon, bubbke gum, sugar, Belgian yeast, dough. Flavor is slightly less sweet and a touch more grainy but overall nice. Mouthfeel is delicate with a light body and soft carbonation despite the huge head. The HUGE head is distracting simply because you get a mouthful of foam instead of liquid every time you try to take a sip. This is still a really nice beer but could have been great.
3.6 Borefts 2015, Day two. Tap. Lekker gruizig, amber smaakje, saison. Backlog from 2015/09/26.

3.8 From 0,75l bottle, Pours light cloudy golden liquid, big frothy white head, Aroma: flowers, elderflower, spicy, sweet, hopy, Taste: light to medium sweet, heavy bitter, light to medium sour, very spicy, very flowery, elderflower, herbal, very hopy, some citrus, tangerine notes, orange peel, malty, later alcohol strenght is perceptible, yet not so disturbing, Palate: medium body, sticky texture, lively carbonation, long bitter spicy finish, Overall: very interesting, quite spicy, hopy and flowery. Taste is better developed than aroma, which is quite simple. Quite drinkable.
3.8 On keg at the Grove, Huddersfield. Previously had it out of a bottle and enjoyed it more, so maybe this keg is a bit old/oxidized. Dry, crisp, light, crushable saison. Bit of ashy lemony incense. Peppery and well balanced. Nicely done.
4.1 750 ml bottle into tulip glass; no bottle dating, but was just released into the state last month. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep orange/amber color with a 2-3 finger dense and fluffy off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a dense cap that lasts the whole glass. Nice dense soapy lacing lings around the glass, with a large amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Incredible appearance. Aromas of big lemon, orange, melon, pear, apple, pepper, pine, honey, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big lemon, orange, melon, pear, apple, pepper, pine, honey, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Moderate amount of peppery yeast spiciness and herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, orange, melon, pear, apple, pepper, pine, honey, light caramel, toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Very nice robustness, complexity, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Very dry finish from carbonation. High carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, moderately sticky, and slightly creamy mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent hoppy saison style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
