Upright Flora Rustica

Upright Flora Rustica

Flora Rustica is a Northwest-style saison that use yarrow and calendula flowers along with a handful of our favorite Oregon grown hops to produce a strongly aromatic beer. It’s very sparking and dry and makes an excellent aperitif as well as an interesting companion for certain foods like herbaceous and bitter salads or strong and fatty fish like mackerel.

4.3 Pours a very hazy dark golden orange color with tangerine edges and a two finger white head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Spotty lacing left behind. Very floral aroma with funky saison yeast, earthy hops and light fruit. Musty straw, grass and flower petal along with some honey, farmhouse yeast, apricot apple and pear. On the fuller end of medium bodied with delicate carbonation and an excellent balance of floral, citrus and farmhouse notes. Floral with subtle peppery spice and dry farmhouse funk. Grass and straw notes along with earthy hops and strong citrus. Orange peel and grapefruit juice with flowers, spice, bread and dry, funky yeast. Really well balanced, refreshing and very easy to drink. I enjoyed this beer very much.
4.1 750ml bottle pours out a straw color topped with a fluffy white head. Nose is a mix of floral spice perfume and and yeast notes. Taste is more of the perfume floral spices and lots of herbal.
3.7 Bottle - Sweet herbal malts, light honey and citrus and more sweetness. Clear gold with a rich white active head. Much like it smells, pretty sweet and well carbonated. An interesting drink for sure, I can see this going very well with food, but on its own a bit sweet.
3.8 a little over active on the foam and carbonation, but otherwise without fault. loved the dry yeasty flavor and the abundance of florals, especially in the flavor. a little hoppy as well and quite enjoyable.
3.6 750ml bottle, been staring at it long enough that I finally caved. Hazy gold pour with miles and miles of pillowy head. Damn, my pouring technique isn’t the best but it’s about 4 inches of head for 1 of liquid. Aroma: lemon zest, creamcicle, ginger. Not nearly so botanical as BA version ... Until I take a sip. Botanical herbal medicinal flavor dominates everything. Like I’m in a naturopathic drug store (I’ll disclosure: I’ve never been in such a store, this is just what I imagine) and they’re bringing out the big guns. Light pepper and bitterness at the end. Rather dry. I’ve gotta admit, I don’t like stuff that’s this botanical, so maybe I just don’t get this beer, but I’m going to have a hard time finishing this bottle. Calling in help -- any locals who see this tonight, come over to help me finish the bottle!
3.5 December 24, 2014 - bottle from Everetts. Clear golden pour with huge amount of head that sat around for a long time. Aroma was spice and flowers. Taste was consistent with aroma, but also had some citrus / lemon. Dry and spicy in the finish and bubbly carbonation. Light to medium body and maybe a touch watery at times.
3.7 Bottle, pours hazy orange with huge white frothy head. Aroma is grassy with light flora hops and light spices. taste is pretty similar to the nose, less intense spices, creamy body and dry finish
3.4 [ Bottle ][ 1/3 of 75cl ][ Tasting ][ ][ Tulip ][ 11.29.14 ] Murky gold, ultra-active head, lasts forever. Salty dough-crust nose, extremely mineralic with heavy yeast, moderately floral. Overly floral front palate, gravel dryness early alongside grassy bitterness, doughy finish absorbed by dryness, cliff-like end, lips stuck together. Burping carbonation minutes later. 3.4 Pour is dark hazed amber with lots of tight white head. Nose is very floral, lots of spicy flowers, a bit green, fair bit of pepper, some farmhouse notes, faint lemon. Taste is similar, tons of floral herbal notes, a fair bit of pepper, some lemon, grassy hop. Light body, softer carb, gentle feel.
3.3 Bottle shared at a tasting at Stas’s place. Thanks Itai. Pours yellow to brown with a small head, aroma of flowers, herbs, fruits, flavor of hops, herbs, lavender, floral notes, sweetish, medium bodied.
3.5 The beer is a medium yellow gold with a puffy white head. Good lacing and retention. The liquid is quite cloudy. Fairly strong floral character, somewhat medicinal. Nice fresh grain and saison yeast underneath the flowers. Taste is moderately bitter for the style. Grassy, herbaceous, vegetal in a funny way. Again, the saison base seems very nice, earthy, soft and gently sweet, but the floral flavor is a bit strong and kinda off for me. Mouthfeel is creamy and full but still pretty light. Interesting twist on their normal stuff but I’m not a big fan of the specific flower addition. Just too much of that herbal, medicinal flavor.
3.4 Bottle. It exploded on me, but whatever. Pours a hazy golden color with a ginormous white head on it. Nose is light and citrusy with a good deal of funkiness mixed in. Taste is ever so slightly tart, with some herbs and grass coming through, and just a bit of citrus. Pretty decent and fresh.
3.8 Bottle courtesy of Håkan (non-RB). Pours hazy vibrant orangish yellow with a big frothy white head that slowly dissipates while leaving lots of sticky lacing on the glass. Smell is herbal and floral with crackers, dried flowers, spearmint, hay, dry soil and orange zest. Taste is slightly bitter and floral with crackers, dried flowers, hay, dry soil, minerals, grapefruit rinds, white pepper corns, orange zest and lemon zest. Mouthfeel is soft, dry and light to medium bodied. Finish is bitter and floral with crackers, dried flowers, dry soil, hay, orange zest and lemon zest. Surprising considering how the BA version played out but yet quite tasty.
3.7 Difficult to pour this one, too much head. Golden hazy beer eventually. Nice herbal tea aroma, with some citrus. Spicy year, lime, herbal tea, lemon zest. Very nice but a shame I got about one pint from this big bottle.
3.6 750 ml bottle from Star Grocery. It pours a hazy orange color, rather dark with a white head. The aroma is floral with some strong notes of lemongrass, lemon candy, floral perfume and a very faint hint of spice. Pleasant. The flavor is similarly light and floral with some mild candy like sweetness. Some more floral perfume and hints of spice before mild bitterness in the finish. Kind of simple and devoid of the rustic character that I usually get from Upright Saisons. Still very pleasant though.
3.1 Bottle sample at a tasting. Thanks zvikar. Hazy yellow with a small head. Spicy and herbal aroma with strong calendula and yarrow notes and some fruitiness. Sweet with mild medicinal and herbal bitterness, light fruitiness. Interesting, but a bit messy.
2.6 Bottle sample at a tasting at Stas’s place. Thanks zvikar. Hazy deep golden with a white head. Aroma of floral spiciness, yeast and some fruitiness, sweetish flavor with yeast, lots of floral spiciness, some fruitiness, some malt and a bitterish finish. Medium-bodied. Not my thing.
4.7 Gorgeous cloudy straw, with beautiful abundant white head. Sweet floral nose. Flavor is same plus spicy yeast, earthy herbs, wheat, honey, mild bitterness.
4.2 Spicy yet delicate belgian yeast fragrance, slightly banana-y. Flavor is perfect for summer, herbacious flower taste and spice on the finish. Super sessionable.
4.6 750ml Bottle pours a very hazy pale brown/yellow color with a lot of frothy head. Wow. Amazing balance of flavor. A little marmalade, mild sweetness. Love the way it looks. I've got the barrel aged version to try too, and can't believe it could be better than this.
3.9 Hazy blonde, very spicy/peppery aroma, herbal, very peppery character. Sweet pale malts and low bitterness. Complex, very nice balance as usual. Good herbals, off-dry finish.
3.8 750ml. Pours a lovely straw yellow. Hints of grain and summer flowers on the nose. Flavors lean towards beautiful touches of calendula, hay, a bit of barnyard grains, tender sweeter malts, and finishes with a really pleasant grassy note. Damn good light stuff!
3.5 At upright with Taylor, Stephen, and Dina. Pours yellow hint of orange with thin head. Aroma is tangy orange hay zest. Taste is big raw barely and raw wheat grain grass note, some lemon peel bitter notes but not citrus. Nice and drinkable, strong grainy grassy backbone.
