Upright Four Play

Upright Four Play

Pinot Barrel Four was our second batch. We took the recipe for the Four and sent the beer into some oak barrels graciously donated by La Bete winery of McMinnville, topping them up with a small amount of Oregon cherry puree along with lactobacillus and brettanomyces claussenii to encourage more acidity and aromatic complexity in the finished beer. Half of the batch was blended and kegged and can be found at a few specialty bars while the remaining half is still maturing in the barrels and will likely be bottled at some point towards the end of 2009.

4.0 5 oz sample at the brewery in Portland, Oregon. The pour is a hazed golden yellow with minimal white head. The aroma is bright cherry sour, citrus tartness and some wheat grain in back. The taste is a great melding of the sour cherry and the tart acidic citrus, along with some wood and funk Brett that carries the finish. The palate is light bodied with fine active carbonation and the dry Brett funky tart finish. Fun beer.
4.1 This was a draft pour at the brewery during the RBSG. In the glass it was a gold color with a white head. Nose of tart cherry and sourness. Medium body. Flavor is malts, wine, oak, cherry, and funk. Tart sour finish . Really delicious

3.4 Keg at Hoppy Loft, 12th May 15. Probably unfair to rate this after 4 Cantillons. It’s nice some yeast and funk and sourness. OK, nothing exciting for me
3.9 Tap at the brewery. Nice. Sourness, nice funky aroma, sweets. Tangerine. Fun.
4.0 On tap at upright brewery Portland. Pours out a pinkish amber topped with a small head. Nose is cherry apricot barnyard and barrel notes. Taste is more of the nice fruit and a good tartness funk.
3.7 Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver, 600th Menu Party Hazy bright amber color, small head. It’s a quite standard Sour, with a light fruity flavor, and very light black pepper note; a bit lemony too, and woody; balanced. No surprises, but good.
4.2 Tap, brewery, amber pour, white head, nose is cherry, taste is cherry, tart, rivals Consecration, wow
3.9 [2/26/15] Draught at Upright Brewing in Portland. Orange color. Lovely aroma with barnyard, lacto, fruitiness (some cherries), oak and a bit of leather. Sourish flavor, bretty, oaky and lactic, with some cherries. Medium-bodied. Great stuff, extremely easy-drinking.

4.0 Keg at the brewery, 08/11/14. Hazed pinkish orange with moderate off white edgeing. Nose is tangy cherry skins, brett wafts, straw, earthy, funk, tarte pink berry tunes. Taste comprises sour cherry licks, brett, tangy red berry, straw, farmyard, light acidity. Medum bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with light puckerings. 3.9 Draft. Lactic sour aroma, dried apricot, unripe blackberry, lightly sour taste with a sweet finish. This beer is delicious.
4.3 On tap at upright. Such a phenomenal house sour. Cherry acidity, sharp, mild funk and moderate lacto.
3.9 Draft at brewery, Portland. Pours a cloudy tan-red, not much head to speak of. Aroma fruity, with some oaky notes too. Lots of cherry, some lacto character. Body sweet and just a bit tart, lots of understated fruit character, with just the right amount of oakiness. Kind of ridiculous this is a permanent handle for the price.
4.3 Excellent wild ale from upright. Big winey and cherry aroma upon pouring. Moderate level of funk and sour in the flavor especially. Seamlessly blended, and delicious."
3.9 Hazy orange with a pale head. Aroma is butterscotch, peach, plum, apricot. Medium-full bodied, lightly tart fruity on the palate. Flavours are cherry, peach, blood orange. Delicious.
4.1 At upright with Taylor, Stephen, and Dina. Pours darker bronze hazy, no head. Aroma is fresh authentic light cherries, minimal acidity, nice. Taste is sparking fresh cherries, rose like, very balanced and drinkable. Love it
4.2 On tap at the brewery. Pour is hazy orange-pink with a small head that quickly dissipated. Fresh tart cherries, cinnamon, vanilla, pie crust, graham cracker, lemony, cherry pie aroma. Taste is bright cherry, lacto, vanilla, nutmeg, allspice, pie crust, citruses, and flowers with a big sour finish and great spice notes. Medium body with high carbonation. Great cherry pie sour.
3.7 On tap at the brewery. Which was hard to find. The cherries and sourness blend well so neither over powers the other. Wish i could take this home
4.1 On tap at the brewery - This was quite the beauty. Pours reddish with a very light head. The aroma is quite tart with lots of cherries, light barrel, nice souring with a bit of vinegar. It has a medium crisp body with mild carbonation. The flavor has lots of raspberry and cherry. There is mild sourness compared to the aroma, but its there and lots of thick smooth fruit. The finish has rich cherries and mild tartness. Really enjoyable.
3.9 Bottle at home. Thx dfclav! Pours clear deep golden with a creamy off white head. The aroma is cherry, acid, ripe berries, oak and sour grapes. The flavor is ripe berries, cherry, light acid, marmalade, sour berries and light gooseberry.
3.8 A - pours light hazy glowing ruddy orange with no head. S - the nose is cherries and yogurt up front. Light raspberry. Simple grains and yeast. M - medium body and sugary sweet. Dry end. T - cherries both canned and fresh. Yeast, yogurt, mineral water and lemon juice. O - nice and clean. A little too sweet and less complex than I'd like
3.9 On tap at the brewery. Pours a hazy amber/red with little head. Aromas of sour fruit and citrus. Flavors of citrus , light brett, and light cherries. Not overly sour - almost smooth. Easy to drink. Super.
3.8 Bottle 750ml. Clear medium amber - red orange colour with a small, frothy - fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, white to off-white head. Aroma is moderate to light heavy cherry, light wood - funky, notes of malt - caramel. Flavour is moderate to light heavy sweet and light acidic with a long duration, tart, cherry, dry. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20131122]
4.1 On trap at brewery. Pours a lightly hazy amber red. Smells strongly of site cherries and lemon. Tastes sour of cherries with a hint of wood. Nice and tart, though not terribly complex.
4.1 Draft at Upright a few weeks ago - from notes. Pours murky burnt copper with no head. Aroma: hella sexy. Cherry, oak, tart, funk; cheese and poop in all the good ways. Taste: moderately sweet, really well-balanced tartness; cherry, funk, and a tiny bit of sweetened cereal in the end. Light body, texture is a bit thin. Overall: my favorite of the day so far. This alone is enough of a reason to stop in for a visit.
