Bottle conditioned.

Brewed under direction of Hildegard van Ostaden, formerly at Van Steenberge, now at Koningshoeven - La Trappe brewery.

With its rich foam, hoppy flavour and fine bitterness, Urthel Vlaemse Bock is a special ale with a high drinkability for lovers of the authentic Flemish brewing art. Vlaemse Bock as originally brewed for the winter, but is now available in 33 cl. (330 ml./ 11.2 FL.OZ.), 75 cl. (750 ml./1 PT. 9.4 FL. OZ.) and kegs the whole year. 2.6 Bottle. Pours a deep nut brown clear body with a small off-white head. Aroma is phenolic raisins and dark fruit tones, grape peel, wet paper and hints of paint thinner. Weird, and not too good. Taste is raisins, slight phenolic touches, dry wood-like tones, alcohol and deep malts. Medium body and carbonation. OK, but not great.

Malty and slightly sickly sweetish aroma, notes of molasses, oak and dark dried fruits. Rich malty flavour, sweet but not extreme, notes of caramel, molasses and brown kandij sugar. Minimal hops.

1.6 Corked bomber poured into tulip glass, bottle code K18A7. Pours a muddy reddish brown color with no head. Mild aromas of raisin, prune, biscuit, caramel, molasses, and earth. Initial flavor is a light sweet with a light bitter finish. Taste of caramel, rum soaked raisin, herbal, and earth. Flat carbonation, medium body, dry, and lingering flavor of herbs and dirt.

3.7 33 cl bottle @ Gastropub Tuulensuu. Rated on 23.05.2010 Aroma is malty with raisins and brown sugar. Flavour has ripe fruits, lots of malt, caramel and raisins. Not a bock in any way, more like a dubbel. But a good one!
3.7 Bottle @ Belgian Brewfest. Solid Dub. Probably the best brew I have tried by Urthel.
3.3 Old rating bottle shared with benzai at the buitenlust.. dark brown color, nice red glare... sweet smell, taste is good though.. like it
4.1 330 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottle code K17A7. Pours very cloudy dark reddish brown color with a very nice 2-3 finger dense khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings to the glass, with a fair amount of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of raisin, prune, toast, biscuit, caramel, molasses, nuttiness, and earth. Pretty nice aromas with good balance and weak strength. Taste of big caramel, toast, biscuit, raisin, nuttiness, toffee, molasses, prune, herbal, and earth. Lingering notes of raisin, caramel, biscuit, toast, nuttiness, molasses, and herbal on the finish for a good. Fantastic balance of flavors with nice complexity and robustness. No cloying flavors at all after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Belgian strong dark ale! Great robust and balance flavors; and very smooth to sip on. Really enjoyed this.

3.6 At a tasting, thanks, small stable beige creamy head, murky and a little light brown colur, aroma of congac, dried frits, with some oxidised notes and a touch of chocolate, flavourof dark chocolate, baba au rhum, and some cherries. Good and quite complex but a bit too heavy.

3.7 11.2oz bottle in a Trappist glass. Pours dark brown with a lacy, light tan head. Aroma of spicy yeast, caramel malts, some floral hops, and hints of fruits. Flavor the same. Average texture. A pretty good dubbel.
3.2 Dark brown pour with a beige head. Aromas of raisins, sweet spices, licorice, toffee. Flavours of licorice, caramel, cinnamon. Malty, sweet finish.
3.1 Brown pour, tan head. Sweet, roasty malty aroma with dates, figs, some brown sugar. Flavor is roasty, sweet, figs, port, sticky raisin bread.
3.0 Pours a dark root beer brown with a aggressive golden tan head which dissipated quickly. Slight lacing was noted. The nose was malty with notes of dark fruit. The taste was roasted malt, prunes, raisins and hints of coffee with a pleasing bitter aftertaste. An enjoyable beer.
3.6 Brown pour, tan head. Sweet, roasty malty aroma with dates, figs, some brown sugar. Flavor is roasty, sweet, figs, port, sticky raisin bread. Not damn bad!
3.8 Brown 33cl bottle, best before 06/2010, drank 02/2010. Poured into a ’Corsendonk’ stemmed tulip glass. The whole bottle was poured into the glass, so a hazy, misty body of a dirty red/deep brown beer stared back at me as I stared at it. On top sat a light tan coloured head, thick and creamy looking. The roasted malt smells hit my nose before it got to the glass. Shotrbread biscuits with caramel and chocolte on top (known as Millionaires shortbread in some parts) is how the aromas sorted themselves out during the tasting and as the beer warmed; add extra maltiness to that statement. The taste was warming a sweetish, the molasses in the malts showing their true flavours. When I think of this style it includes Chimay Blue, 3 Pistols and Gulden Draak, this beer stands up with those no problem. Sweet, but not overly so, rich and full bodied it is, warming as already mentioned, this is a cold evening nightcap sort of beer. Luckily it is very cold tonight, also luckily, it is still early and my nightcap will be a lot later!
3.0 300312: ugly gnome with a proper nose is apparently the brewery trademark. it starts bad. Minni volcano opening. smells of carbonated and dark malt. overkarboneret, burnt acidity. otherwise ok creamy roasted flavor.
3.8 Bottle. Dark caramel color, small amount of head and nice lacing. Scent of caramel malt, yeast, honey, and a hint of sour cherries. Taste is malty, delicately sour, woody, and creamy, with some alcohol on the finish. Well rounded beer with a fruity character that lingers in the mouth.

3.7 Bottle. Clear brown/red colour with tanned head, containing small and big bubbles. Malty aroma of roast, licorice and chocolate. Medium bitterness in flavour, returning the dark chocolate flavours and licorice. Rich body, full flavoured, great beer.
3.4 Clear reddish brown with a disappearing beige head and lots of floaties. Flavor is sweet, malty, dried fruit and yeasty. Flavor is quite sweet and moderate bitter. Sweet finish. 200112
3.5 Bottle. Dark brown with small beige head. Aroma is malt, yeast, caramel and dried fruits. Flavour is malt, medium sweet, yeast, caramel, dried fruits, little liquorice and a little bitter.
3.5 HIgh aroma of molasses with raisins and light malt notes. Brown reddish color with a than head that does not persist. Mlated flavor of barley with plums and raisins with a bit of honey. Overall: Strong flavor of barley with an impression of a dubble.
3.4 750 mL bottle (as Vlaemse Bock). Pours a hazy dark brown with no head and little carbonation; a swirl leaves legs on the glass. The aroma is on the sweet side with toffee, Munich malt, prune, a slight roasted hint, and a deep earthiness. The flavor is deep and malty with toffee and creme brulee notes. There is some prune character, but not as much as in the nose. The sweetness is cut with a wooden bitterness and a sort of dank earthy tone. There is a bit of spicy yeast character, but it’s subdued. This gives me the impression of slightly over-toasted raisin bread. Ok.
3.8 Wow. I got this bottle super cheap from the craft beer outlet. Worth every penny. Dark pour with aroma and taste of raisins, caramel, and a hint of hop bitterness. Good.
4.1 What an awesome brew! Fruity, sour, sweet - very complex! Let this one warm just a tad for some really intriguing flavors! Truly a brew to be enjoyed throughout the year but my favorite time of the year is Fall and Winter alongside some tasty rum-coated fruit cake (call me weird but it is divine). Grab a bottle and share some with your friends!
