Val-Dieu Grand Cru
With its dark black colour and its brownish and creamy foam, the Grand Cru is a rich beer, full and powerful with a delicious long aftertaste. You will taste complex and surprisingly mild aromas given the alcohol degree. Produced with strongly roasted malt giving a tangy taste, this beer is also often associated with refined dishes. The caramel froth and roundness in the mouth are in perfect harmony with a medium bitterness and coffee tastes. The Grand Cru has recently won the silver medal in the Brussels Beer Challenge 2016.

LCI. Uit de fles geschonken. Prima quad: vol van smaak, rozijnen, caramel, mout, lekker zoet en zacht mondgevoel.
Пиво темно коричневого, очень насыщенного цвета, если посмотреть на свет. Пена светло коричневая, небольшая но хорошо удерживалась по краю бокала. Сделав первый вдох вы почувствуете сложные и удивительно мягкие ароматы, учитывая степень алкоголя. Карамель, жженый солод, чернослив, немного персика, абрикос аромат действительно очень сложный, но над всеми ароматами наиболее сильный это карамельный солод. Пиво сладкое, но в меру. Карамельный аромат сменяется приятным прожаренным кофе, который дополняет аромат фруктов и согревает алкоголем. Очень интересное и вкусное пиво!
Voici une quadruple comme seule la Belgique sait nous offrir. Puissance, présence en bouche, densité aromatique sont bien présentes sur cette Val-Dieu Grand Cru avec un alcool structurant, une levure typique belge et des arômes de prune, pomme, poire, candy, caramel et chocolat formant un cocktail très appréciable. La complexité, tout en restant très honorable, n'est toutefois pas à la hauteur d'une Rochefort, Saint Bernardus ou autre Abbaye des Rocs. Le visuel est sur un brun limpide sans mousse. Le nez nous amène en Belgique avec force et tempérament. Dès l'attaque, racée, on ressent cette puissance de l'alcool, très bien maîtrisée et ce, sans que le sucre soit surdosé. Le petit plus est la densité de la bière qui la rend proche parfois d'un Barley Wine. Le final, long reste dans cette puissance et richesse aromatique. Très belle bière.

Dark brown pour with small beige head; limited retention. Aroma is dark fruits (raisin), caramel, sugary, spicy, but also something rhum-like. Taste more than medium sweet, caramel, candy sugar, bit spicy, with a late mild bitter aftertaste. Full body but not boozy. Nice Quadrupel; has a certain richness but rather on the sweet side.

Aroma is malts, liqueur, alcohol, herbs, spices, phenols and dried fruit. Almost tart, malty, fruity, toasty, dates, metal. Strong but gentle, smooth, slick, moderate finish.

Val-Dieu Grand Cru wordt gebrouwen door Brouwerij Val-Dieu, een kleinschalige brouwerij in Aubel die werd opgericht in 1997 om de brouwtradities van de Cisterciënzermonniken verder te zetten. Het bier wordt zelfs nog gebrouwen in de (door de monniken ondertussen verlaten) abdijgebouwen zelf.
Val-Dieu Grand Cru.is een helder donkerbruin bier dat bij het uitschenken slechts weinig lichtbeige schuim produceert in een moussige vorm. Het blijft wel stevig aan je glaswand kleven en blijft op een normale manier stabiel. Naar het eind toe heb je nog een fijn dun laagje op het bier staan. Je ziet een normale hoeveelheid CO2 belletjes van een normale grootte omhoog parelen. Op de bodem van het flesje is nog een dun gistlaagje te zien.
HET AROMA:
Zoet, kandij en karamel, banaan, opgelegde kersen, mout en een lichte houttint.
DE SMAAK:
Zoet met weer wat kandij en karamel, banaan, opgelegde kersen.
HET MONDGEVOEL:
Volle body met een romige textuur en een medium prikkelend koolzuurgas.
DE NASMAAK:
Zoet, karamel, wat geroosterd en een kruidige tint.
HET TOTAALGEVOEL:
Een complex bier.
HET VERDICT:
Een lekkere brave quadrupel, zoet genoeg zal dus velen aanspreken. Mag voor mij wat warmer gedronken worden om de smaken en aroma’s wat sterker te laten uitkomen.

Pours a very very dark chestnut brown colour with a thin soapy looking off white head. Aromas of caramel, dry dark fruits, molasses, burnt brown bread, roasted malts and chocolate. Taste has more of the same notes again. Very dark fruity notes with sweetness of the caramel and molasses and a touch of burnt brown bread. A touch of cherry maybe. A little warming alcohol. The slight burnt roasty notes and the sweetness on the finish is very well balanced. Alcohol very well disguised. Medium body, low carbonation and very smooth slightly oily mouthfeel. Good Quad. Enjoying.

Donker bier met een dikke beige schuimkraag. Zalvende qua mondgevoel. En smaken van rood fruit, caramel, koffie en een beetje chocolade.

Taste; solid dose of fudge malts, yeast, dried fruits, prunes, liquorice, rye bread notes, syrup, figs n dates, basement notes, and finish is soft and lingering, warming and malted. Brunatne piwo o obfitej pianie, która zdobi szkło i pozostaje do końca w formie pierścionka przy brzegu szkła. Aromat i smak beczki i rodzynek, szlachetny alkohol. Goryczka średnia w stronę wysokiej.

De color ámbar, con un cordón de espuma de poca duración. De cuerpo medio y baja carbonatación. Aroma a malta tostada y frutos rojos. En boca tiene un ligero dulzor, similar a vino dulce (Oporto). Final seco con un leve amargor.
Pours deep ruby brown with 2 stage head, foamy then dense and creamy. Bouquet is of malt and esters. Sweet caramel on the soft palate with hints of hop bitterness, subtle estery funk and bananas, and a warmth all through makes for one of the best, if not THE best, belgian i have tasted.
33 cl bottle. A dark mahogany coloured beer with an off-white head. Aroma and flavour of malt, caramel, fruit, spice, yeast, alcohol adn with a sweet finish.
75 cl. bottle at home. Bought at Øliver. High and lasting creamy off-white head. Hazy dark brown body. Sweet fruity, apples and pears, aroma with notes of caramel. Sweet roasted malt with caramel and apple pear notes as well as, unortunately, hint of alcoholl. Little hops bitterness, low carbonation, long sweet finish.

It pours dark mahogany brown with a tan, frothy head. Head retention is medium. It has as strong malty and sweet presence in the nose. It has aromas of raisins and dried cherries with a bit of caramel. There is a slight perfume like presence as well. It is sweet up front with the flavor featuring raisins. There are some dark caramel notes in medium quantities with dried cherries. It has a full body with smooth alcohol warmth. The finish is dry with some sweetness. Overall, dark fruits are the strongest element with the malt in support.

On tap at Arts and Crafts Amsterdam Ave. Pours dark brown with a big foamy head. Raisin, biscuit, chocolate, dried cherry, dry sherry, rich brandied cherry. Nice body. Good.
The aroma of burnt caramel, alcohol. Dark brown in color with good light brown head. On the palate, the alcohol sticks out very well. Medium body, medium carbon loans.
Color negro con reflejos naranjas, muy turbia, opaca. Espuma blanca de medio dedo de espesor y corta retención. Aroma medio intenso, maltas tostadas, casi caramelizadas, uva negra, pasas y dátiles, ligeras frutas rojas, sobre todo me recuerda a las cerezas negras maduras, notas de vino tipo Oporto. Sabor intenso, maltas caramelizadas, pasas, dátiles, regaliz, leve vino, madera y unas ricas notas de levadura, final largo, dulce, levísimamente ácido, alcohol excelentemente bien integrado. Textura semioleosa. Carbonatación baja.
Un auténtico placer de cerveza, tranquila, amable, rica en matices, de las que te dibujan una sonrisa en la cara al probarlas. Espero repetir.

This is an awesome quadruple beer. Great sticky mouthfeel. Deep fruit flavours, malty and sweet. Strong. Ticks all the quad boxes. One to buy again.
