Vicaris Generaal

Vicaris Generaal

Bottle: Unfiltered

Vicaris Generaal is a red-brown warm-fermented beer with a beautiful tinted head, unfiltered in both bottle and keg. Generaal will mature in the bottle and is for the experienced beer lover. Generaal has a marked bitterness obtained by using roasted malt and hops. It is not a sweet beer.

Vicaris Generaal is made, like Vicaris Tripel, in three stages: warm fermentation at around 24°C, lagering at approximately 1°C and secondary fermentation in the bottle. The only difference between them is that the Tripel is brewed with one malt variety and Generaal with three. Vicaris Generaal is also brewed without spices.

- Ingredients: water, malt, sugar, hops and yeast.

- Available in 330ml and 750ml bottles and 30l kegs.

Note: Brewed by De Proef before the Dilewyns brewery opened in 2011.

3.7 Brown with a frothy head. Smell of roasted malts with a strong caramel note. Taste of roasted malts with a little walnut oiliness, a light floral side and an agreeable bitterness. Strong carbonation.
3.6 This is a backlog rating from 2014 from a bottle picked up at Party Source, from notes. When I had this beer it was average to below average for the style and not something I wanted to have again or I just didn't get back to my notes because of my technology at the time, work and/or family. Words to describe this beer are sweet malts, caramel, dark fruits, mild spices.
3.5 Bottle. Pours a dark brown colour with a tight beige head, malty aroma with hints of chocolate, the taste is medium bitterness and fruity with a dry bitter finish.
3.9 A recent purchase from a distributor that helps keep me in Belgian brews. This 33 cl bottle will be served into my Great Heights snifter. I determine a mahogany brown body with an assertive parchment brown head. I lift for a smell, candied fruit, cherries and bread dough. But the taste is why I am here. Raisins, biscuit, dates, a vinous quality. Less sweet than expected from the nose, actually more a sour note. Creamy. Goes in a different direction that makes it interesting but definitely not one of my favorite dubbels.
3.5 Pours dark brown, frothy nut brown head. Aroma is malty, sweet, bread, marcipan. Taste is malty, bread, slightly roasted.
3.4 Ohne Überraschung recht stark und alkoholisch. Röstaromen, dazu Malz, Karamell und beerenfrüchte. Vollmundig, leicht süß im Abgang.
4.2 Lekker. Zoete smaak. Beetje chocolade achtig.
Goed biertje
4.4 Bottle. Pours brown with massive foam. Aroma of caramel, interesting Christmas spice blend, nuts. Taste is plum, more spices, chocolate, toast and roasted malts. Big and filling but completely balanced. Sticky candy sugar palate with more plum, cereals and caramel. Really satisfying.
4.1 Bottle from Sugaya. Aromas of caramel, roast, dark fruit, yeast, and gentle spice. Deep orange/brown color, with a big rocky tan topographic 3D map moonscape head. Flavors of toasted malt, chocolate, nuts, dark candi sugar, and plums. Rather balanced finish. Medium-heavy bosy. Rustic and rich stuff. Rounded flavors, well balanced. Alcohol is very well hidden. Really a dubbel?
4.1 Dec 2018. 330ml stumpy dark bottle, unfiltered, from BeerWulf. Ooh, this is malty. My sort of beer. Just enough hops to add interest and balance to the malts. Bags of proper malt flavour with all the nuts, raisins, chocolate, coffee, etc you'd expect. A great winter beer - a perfect Christmas beer, but also lovely at any time of the year for proper beer lovers. Yummy!
3.8 Bottle. Dark brown, ample tan head. Nose caramel, roast malt, coffee, raisins, nutmeg, candied fruits. Quite full body, sweet taste adding chocolate, banana bread.
4.0 33cl bottle. A clear reddish brown colour with a mid-sized good lasting beige head. Aroma of caramel, raisins, dark moderate roasted malt. Taste of caramelish dark malt, chocolate, nuts, raisins, cookies. Quite nice!
3.4 Robe brun sombre, acajou, semble limpide. Riche, chaleureux, dense. L'amertume perturbe un peu cependant.
3.8 Beer #3 of my #7000 beer celebration - 7 on either side of the milestone. Deep brown coloured body with a ruby glow along with a rich brown and coppered glow and a thick four centimetre tall light brown head at first that fades fairly quickly and after a few moments, you've got nothing left up top. Aroma of caramel, light toffee, a touch of apples and pears, some mild grain, a dose of yeast and finishing with some honey and light earthy nuttiness. Meidum-bodied; Strong honey and very sweet flavours at first with a heavy note of malt, light grain, some nuts and earthiness, but mostly a dry, sweet and caramelised sugar flavour with a touch of yeast on the tail end and even a little bit of bread. Aftertaste is dry, but very sweet and incredibly muted for the style - this goes down very easily without any alcohol or pungency/astringency around - this is mild and showing it's age very nicely. I'm not sure what this would have tasted like when I first bought it, but i'm glad I aged it and while it didn't have too much of a complex character, this was nice and aged well. I sampled this stubby 33 cL bottle purchased from Bier Tempel in Bruxelles, Belgium on 18-January-2015 for €2,50 sampled at home in Washington on 21-August-2018, a bit more than 3.5 years after purchase. Date on bottle (best by date?) of: 23-April-2017.
3.7 Dark beige frothy head stayed well on a thick chocolate brown body. Sweet aroma with dark spirits, demerara, parkin & malt. Medium bodied, very sharp & tingly on the tongue with a clean finish. Tastes as the aroma with demerara, Christmas cake, plum, dark spirits & tangy citrussy finish.
3.7 Copenhagen 10/7 2018. 33 cl bottle from Den Belgiske Ølbutik, Vanløse. Fiery, jumping horse on the label. Pours murky, very dark brown with red hue and a lot of yeast lumps whirling about. Off-white head. Settles as thin, patchy layer of foam. Moderate lacing. Aroma is vinous and of chocolate, oak, vanilla, brown sugar, alcohol. Strong carbonation. Slightly oily, prickly, fizzy texture. Flavor is fairly sweet but balanced nicely by medium bitterness. Aftertaste has sharp bitterness rounded by the sweetness inherent. Lingering. Solid well balanced Belgian Dubble.
4.0 Bottle. Muddy brown. Huge frothy head of beige colour. Aroma: dark malts, spicy yeast, dried fruit. Medium body. Taste: medium dry. Rich dried fruit, caramel, toffee, rum, notable hop bitterness. Really good.
3.6 330ml bottle from RusBeerShop in Moscow. Pours opaque brown with a medium-sized beige head. Aroma is dark fruits, spice, caramel, Belgian yeast. Taste is sweet and malty, a little bit alcoholic, caramel, dark bread, sweet fruits, light warming alcohol finish.
3.7 Donkerbruin bier met geelachtig/beige schuim. Geur: geroosterde mout, wat zoethout, kruidig, ietwat gedroogd fruit. Smaak: wat geroosterde moutbitterheid, zoethout, licht kruidig, licht zoet. Medium volmondig. Medium koolzuurprikkel. Afdronk: licht bitterzoet.
4.1 Bottle, 0.33l. Deep ruby pour two finger frothy beige head, thick and long lasting, leaving really nice lacing on the glass. Malty nose, loads of caramel and toffee, sweetish, flowery background. Medium body, soft to medium carbonation. Thick texture, really pleasant mouthfeel, very smooth. Sweet taste with very subtle bitterness towards the finish. Aroma of caramel, toffee and brown sugar. Bready, yeasty. Notes of chocolate. Flowery. Slightly sticky mouthfeel. Nicely balanced, well hidden alcohol. Overall, really nice dubbel. Rich and tasty, one to enjoy slowly.
3.4 Bottle at Hundholmen, Bodø. Pours a hazy brown colour with a small beige head. Aroma of fudge, coffee, bread, chocolate, phenols and raisins. Sweet flavour with dried fruit, chocolate, coffee, bread crust, nuts, leather and some alcohol. Has a slick mouth feel, medium to full body and a light bitterness. Malty and sweet but unbalanced flavour. Aging will help this beer.
3.7 On tap at the 11th Brugge beer Festival, Brugge, Belgium. A hazy dark brown coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Roasty, malty, caramel, dark fruit aroma. Tastes roasty, malty, caramel, dark fruit, quite sweet. Classy Belgian Dubbel.
Meni krasno pivo! :)
3.6 33cl Bottle @ Bodecall, Malaga, Spain. Hazy dark brown colour with a medium size tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, caramel, yeast, dark fruits. Taste is roasted malt, caramel, yeast, chocolate, nuts, herbs, alcohol. Medium body, average carbonation.
4.0 (marron dépôté, nez alcool-épice, bulles franches, trop h2o (s’affine), pruneau, torréfié, fin amère & levure, low lasting)
3.1 Dark beige creamy full lasting head. Brown colour. Aroma is malty with fruity notes (raisins, prunes and dried fruits). Flavor is malty too with fruity (prunes) tones, ending in a moderately fruity and slightly spicy finish. Medium bodied.
4.7 Found this beer from 100 Belgium beers to try before you die and it didn't disappoint !
