3.4 Blind tasting at Papsoes place, another great session, thanks Henrik! Beer #13: Pours orange with a fully diminished off white head. Wineous and woody aroma, light salmiac note. Flavour is sweet, light yeasty and mild spiced. Light sweet and light yeasty finish. This actually works great flavourwise but not in the aroma.
3.4 # 13 Bottle. [Papsoe’s great blind tasting, thanks Henrik!] Average thick fin bubbled head that mostly lasted. Cloudy amber-golden color. Fair display of lacework. Toasted malt, grain, berries, alcohol, raisin and fruit. Over the palate came sour notes, citrus some grapy with mild spice. Medium bodied with an average carbonation and light dry alcoholic texture. Moderated sweet with some sour and bitter flavor. Light sour and sweet fruity finish. 7-3-7-3-14 = 3.4 19-04-2008

4.0 (2003 Vintage) Appearance: Pours an amber color with a grand billowing ivory head. Smell: Very fragrant and sweet-smelling of apricots, candy sugar, and dark fruits. Taste: Begins with the sweetness of caramel and candied fruits (notably tangerines and apricots). Evens out with biscuity, toasted malts and a woody hop flavor. Very dry, spicy finish. Distinctly, this beer isn’t entirely dominated by yeast or spices as some Belgian beers are. Mouthfeel: Medium-full body, with a high, surging level of carbonation. Drinkability: A fairly likeable Belgian-style ale.
3.9 Bottle sampled pours orange/copper with a small compact off-white head. Aroma of fruit, candy sugar, spices, belgian style yeast, and caramel (very nice). The flavor is also sweet, acidic fruit, caramel, citrus, smooth at 9% and spices are present. Good healthy body, good brew.
3.6 ’03 bottle, courtesy of Steve German. Dull orange with little head. Sweet, fruity, malty caramel aroma with apricot. Soft on the palate and sweet but not cloying. Tart, lightly fruity, mildly spicy and ending earthy in flavor. I get some marzipan. Nice understated ale.
3.8 ’03 vintage. A little white head on the ambor head. Very sweet malty fruit nose. Very sweet beers with some yeast. -2/26/07 7/2/7/4/ = 3.6? I’m pretty sure the original rating was from MilkmanDan. As is this one. Well oxidized at this point on the ’03 vintage.
3.9 Courtesy boboski. Bottled 5/15/03. Amber/orange topped by a modest, dense, tan head. Toasty caramel-toffee malt, dark and light fruits, doughy yeast, and mild spices. Full/medium body, balanced. Solid.
3.5 2003. This has aged well and there was so much sugar it could probably go a lot longer. Aroma is sweet with malt and fruit, but I can’t distinguish any particular fruit. Very sweet flavor, malt and sugar, sweet citrus but no sourness. Also yeast in the flavor.
4.2 2003 vintage. A orangish pour with thick head. Boy, Victory seems to do a pretty good job with their belgians. I really liked this and V12, golden monkey not quite as much. A beer that held up to it’s aging, nice complex flavors of toffee, cinnamon, peach, and apples. Very good.
3.4 2003 vintage pours a hazy reddish orange. Kind of has a weird almost vegital/candi sugar nose. The flavor is similiar. I am not sure what the flavor is is like a candi sugar and caramel meets brussell sprouts or something. Interesting to say the least, and I am not sure if I liked it or not.
3.3 2003 vintage pours to a burnt, thick apricot orange in color. Aroma is an amalgamation of oranges, whiskey, and some weird pot-roastish notes. But that’s no anomaly: heavily marinated meat in the flavor, butter rum and wet wood. If it sounds weird you’ve got the idea.
3.7 shared 750. not sure of the vintage. Hazy golden/light amber in in appearance. Aroma is yeasty, with alot of notes of apples/pears, caramel, light spices. Taste is the same, full bodied, lightly sweet, bready and spicy. pretty enjoyable.
4.1 2003 vintage courtesy of a lucky find. Green apples rind, coriander cinnamon apple pie aroma. Orange amber hazy with diminishing beige normal head. Apple-orange dessert flavor, spice, cinnamon, brown sugar, very nice. medium gravity, bubbly, nice hoppy tasy finish.
3.8 Sample at Sleepy Bear tasting 09/30/06 - 2003 vintage thanks jjpm74 - Aroma is strong spice, honey, malt, carmel, and some light fruits. Pours dark orange with medium head and great lacing. Flavor matches aroma with some citrus hoopy characteristics crepping in. Alcohol well hidden. Palate is creamy and tart. This has aged beautifully and tastes great. Wish I had more.
4.3 2003 Bottle. Pours a deep amber with a frothy head and exquisite lacing. Light peach and cedar in the nose. Flavor is blunt peach, wood, raisin, and a touch of orange peel. Mouthfeel flows like a river of flavor over the tongue. Another stellar effort from Victory.
3.8 Bottle of the 2003 vintage. A murky orange brown color with a foamy tan head. The aroma has orange, pears, peach, apple, light toasted malts and caramel. A smooth malty, light chocolate and caramel flavor. Mildly warming with a subtle alcohol finish. Balanced and enjoyable.
2.8 This poured amber and smelled of cloves (which I like) and vanilla (which I really don’t like). The licorace taste was strong enough to numb my tongue. I didn’t notice any of the fruitiness everyone else seems to, so maybe I had a bad bottle.
3.8 A hazy golden/amber pour with an off white light head. A nice yeasty aroma with a fruit kicker. A fruity almost appley flavor, and the light yeast flavor as well. A smooth very well carbonated palate for the style with a hint of some kind of bitter at the end. Thanks to whomever brought this to kp’s Cellar Party.
3.7 2003 Vintage: Poured a slightly hazy and chunky orange-amber color with a thin off-white head. Sweet and sugary aged malt aroma and flavor. Caramel malty flavor. Light fruit in the aroma. Lively mouthfeel.
3.9 Nutty brown in color with a light tan head that leaves some lacing in its wake. Chocolate, caramel, cherries, apple, lots of grains and fruity/floral yeast. Oatier, thicker palate with a long, long finish. Aggressive, with a bit of forward alcohol. Though this is a winter beer -- I would say it is good for any time of year. Splendid!
3.8 Hazy orange/amber body with an cream colored head. Sweet sugary aroma includes fruit, spice, caramel, yeast, and faint alcohol. Tastes mildly spicy, lightly sugary, fruity, faintly alcoholic. Aftertaste is lightly spicy, a little dry and a little yeasty.
4.1 After the cork pop, a channel of foam crawls up the neck of the bottle encouraging a quick pour and an immense head in my glass. This head settles rather quickly over a very attractive, light-hazed vermillion body with deep red lowlights. Caramel chewiness is detected in the nose with tangerine citrus, raisin, big alcohol and an intriguing yeast strain that is spicy, sour and sweet at once. Fluffy yet thinly syruped, fruity malts and vinous alcohol turn to whisky with a lick of salt in a dry finish. Entertaining. Purchased from Di Carlo Fine Wines and Spirits, Mundelein, IL 60060
3.6 Courtesy of Pailhead. Hazy copper with tan film for head. Aroma very yeasty, with tons of fruit, (apple, pear, white grape) with a floral hop backgorund, somewhat spicy. Flavor again fruity esters, mostly apple and pear, with floral hops and some spice in the finish. Struggled to bump this score up, it’s too one-dimensional though, with all the fruit. Good brew nonetheless.
3.8 Aroma has apple, corriander, orange peel, caramel and hints of chocolate. Taste was smooth for the strength but one dimensional. The apple was the dominant flavor.
3.7 Bottle: 2003 vintage. Big yeasty aroma with some light fruit and hints of apple. Pours a cloudy orangish-red with a small white head. Lots of yeast with a hint of tartness. Touch of candi sugar just before a flowery bitter finish with a touch of acidity.
3.3 Thanks Styles. Vintage 2003. Pours a hazy orange with a quick dissapearing off white head. Aromas were mild with a musty and citrus . Flavors were pear, light maltiness, citrus and spice.
3.4 Typical American version of a Belgian style, unfortunately. Simple, straight forward.
3.6 Poured orange with a off white head and yeast sediment floating about. Aroma was sweet fruit, notably pear and peach, with a good amount of yeast. Flavor is malty sweet and fruity. Ends quite dry.
4.0 12.25.05 A nice christmas treat. May 15, 03 bottling. Had a hard time explaining to a couple people that not all beer that sits around for a year or three gets "skunked". As for this one. Excellent pour with a deep amber nearly copper color. Slight syrup with spices and fruits. Perfect for holiday dinner.
