Victory Hop Wallop

Victory Hop Wallop

Horace ‘Hop’ Wallop headed West a broken man. For it was a certain Miss LuLubelle Lager that had left him, thirsting for more. Drawn by wild tales of the riches of the gold mines, Hop pressed on westward. His last nickel spent on a prospecting pan, Hop’s hunger and thirst got the best of him. Two fistfuls o’ barley and three of some wild and wayward hops tossed in the pan with some clear water was to be his meal. But sleep
overcame him and he woke to a bubbling, cacophonous concoction. Overjoyed with the beautiful ale that he had made, Hop realized the secret of the ’green gold’ he had discovered in those fresh hops. Celebrated far and wide, Hop Wallop lives on in this vivid ale with his words, "hoppiness is happiness." As our annual homage to the fresh hop harvest, Hop Wallop is a fragrant experience that delights the tastebuds. Pure gold of color, this ale offers its heady bounty of hops to the adventurous of taste. Bold, bracing and surprisingly refreshing for a strong ale, Hop Wallop lives up to its name and legacy.

3.7 Bottle. Pours clear pale gold with a white head. Lots of citrus and pine with a bitter finish. Good.
3.8 Clear , amber color. Pine and earthy notes in the aroma. Strong, hoppy bitterness Good, old school IPA.
3.3 Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Andover Classic Wines. Appearance is clear yellow with tons of sparkle, finger-width foamy, white head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is biscuit dough malts dwarfing mild citrus. Taste is malty--more Pilsner/cracker than caramel--with trace citrus and dry bitterness. Palate is medium bodied with smooth texture, soft-to-average carbonation and dry, mostly bitter finish. Overall, surprising out-of-whack malt-to-hop balance for a beer called "Hop Wallop"--minimal hop FLAVOR to speak of, especially for a citra/simcoe offering; mainly malt flavors and hop bitterness.
4.3 First time i saw this brew. I'm typically a Hop Devil type when I do Victory but what the heck, gave it a try. Surprised by the taste, not in a bad way. Not as hopped as I might expect, a bit more citrus and frankly an enjoyable taste. I am not a beer snob just a guy who likes lots of hops and strong IPAs. I would add this to a regular purchase selection.
3.9 A kinder, gentler Hop Wallop. Years have gone by since I've had a pint, so I'm not sure how long this scaled-down version has been the recipe, but, despite putting back many a sixer of the old brew back in the day, I'm a fan of the new(ish) approach. The hardcore caramel and pine of the original have been reined in, with more cracker and grass and tropical-citrus notes replacing the DIPA indulgence of the original. (At 7.5%, I'm not sure new Hop Wallop still counts as an Imperial IPA.) Definitely brighter, with an easier finish--the bitterness is prominent, but no longer as palate-wrecking--yet still tasty as hell.
4.2 1/22/19 With A cleaning the house after a day of step studying. Nose is big with lots of citrus and equally strong sticky, earthy hop notes. Taste is sweet up front then quickly blooms into a sticky herbal hop bomb. Lots of earthy bitterness at the end. Soft and silky palate without that much carbonation. Leaves lots of foral bitter hops on the finish. Overall, another fantastic IPA from Victory. Big sticky hop bomb with lots of great herbal flavors.
2.9 Draft at Craft Brewed. Pours a clear gold with a small bit of white foam that dissipates. Light orange zest and marmalade notes. Bitter on the palate with dried orange zest, pine and toasted caramel. Some peppery bitter hops that linger. A bit thin and boozy.
3.9 Pint. Clear orange gold, foamy head fading to lacy edges. Big pine and citrus aroma. It's a boozy dense citrus led straight up dry af IPA. Glorious.
3.3 I just expected more here. I didn't actually get that much bitter hops in the body and for a Citra hop and Victory beer, was a bit disappointed.
3.2 Haven’t had it since it’s hiatus. Poured into a sample glass from a bottle. Virtually nothing to report on the nose. Great, professional appearance: Golden, filtered, and leaves spidery lacing. Taste is refreshing and well balanced; hard to believe it’s 7.5%. Citra hops very present. Merry Christmas!
4.0 New England Run Sample #5- OK, this isn't a local "New England" brewer, but was close enough and was curious to try. Had their Hop Devil back home, which was good, so wanted to try something else from this brewer. Plus, I'm not sure If they have this there so choose this as the 6-pack to buy as soon as I got in town. A very good IPA. I don't know the difference really between an Imperial IPA, Double IPA, Extra IPA, etc....but this has the feeling of an Extra or heavy strong IPA that's not quite a double. Appearance is on the lighter side...medium to dark yellow, lighter orange for IPA standards. Taste, like the name, leans heavy on the hop side. One of the bitterest one's I've had for a non DIPA. This brewery is impressing me so far. I am now downgrading flavor from 9 to 8 b/c just a bit too bitter for my preference...but is a close call.
4.7 Golden pour from a growler filled at Victory's Parkesburg brew pub. Fluffy one finger head leaving plenty of lacing. Aromas of pine, fresh hops, grain and sweet malts. Taste follows the nose and has a bit of sweetness up front followed by a delicious hop bitterness. Clean and refreshing. Reminds me a little of Hopslam, which I love.
3.8 12oz bottle, WW. Clear golden orange, small, sticky white head. Grapefruit and orange aromas and flavors with pine, resin and caramel. Lots of hops bitterness. Sweet, oily, bitter finish. (notes)
3.8 Keg Half Pint at White Horse American Beer Festival 2009, Parsons Green, London in July 2009 - And Bottle - Pale Gold in colour. Very Hoppy; piney, very resinous, oily hops. Very citrus-fruity; bitter grapefruit and lemon. Solid Malt base; caramel and toffee. Intensely piney resinous hops over a solid malty base. Very bitter citrus hop bite. Mega-bitter, mega-hoppy, mega-citrus-fruity Double IPA. (2009-07)
3.3 backlog, Bottle, pours a very well carbonated golden orange with average to large sized head. Small bubbles. Smell and taste are dry hops, strong bitter pine, ash, grapefruit, and toast. Lacked balance for me and was hot in the close
3.6 Hop wallop pours a deep yellow almost lager type body with plenty of carbonation and a thin head that left lots of heavy lace. Aroma had a few different things in it like pine, citrus and almost some floral notes, but all were rather faint. Mouthfeel was nice with a slight thickness and carbonation bite. The flavor left a little to be desired, the pine flavor bordered on skunky with a bitter finish, it wasnt bad but kinda unusual. Even though the taste was a little off i wouldn’t mind trying it again in the future. Originally rated on 11/19/08
3.8 Pours clear blonde with a modest white head. nose is the usual suspects of West Coast hops and a little sweetness. hops come on fairly strong on the front with good bitterness and some grapefruit. malt is very sweet. finish is better and somewhat sticky.
3.6 Pours a nice clear, gold color with no lacing or head retention. Smells like pine and hops. Tastes very hop forward and finishes less bitter than I thought it would. Good beer, but nothing crazy.
3.8 12oz Flasche. Goldenes Bier, flacher Schaum. Hopfen, Kräuter, Orangen und Zitronenschale in der Nase. Sehr kräftig bitter im Geschmack. Kantiges Bier. Citrus und Malzsüsse.
3.6 355ml botte. Almost clear golden orange color with off white head. Hoppy and malty aroma, citrusy fruity, pine, caramel. Sweet and bitter taste like aroma. Medium oily body with soft carbonation
3.4 Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel Florentin. Thanks Shmupi. Hazy amber with a white film. Spicy, cumin aroma with mild fruity hoppiness. Sweet bubblegum and a little oxidized taste. Medium body, bubblegum finish.
3.8 had this 2 yrs ago and forgot to rate it..golden pour with a fluffy white head..aroma of citrus fruits,pine,resin..sticky,sweet,hoppy..kind of an amped up version of Hop Devil.
3.9 Bottle at home. Pours golden, nose is resinous, pine, caramel, taste is quite fruity and juicy, bitter.
3.0 Hop wallop is a cool story and this golden beer is alot of fun. This beer is bold and adventures. Not a late bloomer. Great aroma.
3.7 (from notes) - served in pint glass A - hazy yellow/orange capped with medium eggshell head. Head has modest retention. Ample, fine carbonation. Aroma of citrus hops and malt. Mild aroma for style and taste. T - "Hop Wallop"? Yes, but amply tempered with a generous load of caramel malt. Has bitter (lemony grapefruit) hop finish and aftertaste true to style. Pronounced citrus and pine notes to hops. M - brisk and a bit tingly; medium body; D - a good sipper, although I notice it is disappearing rather quickly; a good session beer too, but watch out for that 8.5% ABV which is not obvious via aroma or taste.
3.5 Bottle 33 cl. Yellow, hazy with a white head. Soft hoppy aroma with some orange sence. Light bittersweet with a soft hoppy end. bb. 23.07.2014, tested 01.09.2014.
4.1 "no doubt i had a bad one, even though the date on the label had not passed...but the spoiled version is all i have to go on. too bad...Storm King was really good, and I just finished an Alesmith IPA & wanted to compare. This one smelled spoiled & skunky, although there was still a hint of the choice hops that were there, it actually looked good on the pour...even if the head was a little much. Body was nice too, but since it was bad, the flavor made it so i only wanted one swig. not available anywhere near Reno, so I’ll rerate if i ever find it again. Man...i’d planned on sampling Green Flash IPA, but this spoiled crap ruined my palate for the night! rerate from a spoiled 2.3... got a good batch this time. got a touch of skunk in the nose before the hops, but maybe it was in my head. it disappeared when i poured. thinner but smoother than i was expecting. quite hoppy and complex, but not a huge 2ipa, which i guess is both good and bad. solid, grapefruit hops. very very smooth. 9/09 same on tap."
2.8 Rated based on notes taken 18 Jul 2011 -- A nice IPA. Hops are slightly underwhelming, mostly bittering. Not much flavor and aroma hops.
4.1 from a 33cl poured a hazy golden body with a nice creamy off-white head that staid some time. Aroma is wonderful, hops, candy, spices and flowers. Flavors of malts, floral, sweet and herbal hops, slightly spicy, peppery. Alcohol, bitterness, nice strong body. Nice strong complex flavors, long lasting bitter taste in mouth, very enjoyable. Great Brew.
3.5 Gold with big foamy head and lots of sediment. Resinous hop aroma. Taste- first thing noticed is the sweet fruity malt. Tropical fruit. Hops hit you next...piney and resinous. Just a tad soapy. Overall, very nice.
