Fruity notes from imported Belgian yeast swirl through a precise souring. Pucker up to a bite of citrus laden tang ending with a delectable experience.
Malt: Pilsner Hops: Tettnang (from 2020 can)
Tastefully tart is how our monkeys describe their sour sibling. Born from the same imported malts, Belgian yeast, and a mix of magical spices, this monkey decided to take a walk on the tangy side. With a swirling citrusy, lemon bit and a delectable essence, you better pucker up and respect this monkey. (from http://victorybeer.com/beers/sour-monkey)
This electrifying transformation of our famed Golden Monkey may just blow your mind. Tastefully twisted to offer nuances of sweet fruit and a sharp tang of tartness, this exhilarating combination of flavors makes this brew a Monkey all its own.

3.8Bottle - Pours a hazy golden with a smallish head. Sour aroma with a good balance of sweet and sour. Nice mouthfeel and interesting finish. The triple aspect Is weak, but very enjoyable.
3.612oz can courtesy of Headbanger poured into a Tulip. Color is light yellow with a slight haze. Carbonation is good with a small rocky white head. Aroma is light grain and citrus with a sour note. It has a lighter medium body with a crisp mouthfeel. Flavor is tart with a nice lemon note and just a touch of pineapple and peach. In the aftertaste a Belgian spice shows as it finishes dry. Overall this is an interesting and complex brew.
3.5Bottle dated 30 April 2015. Strong sour malt aroma. Cloudy orange color with a small white head. Tart flavor throughout with undertones of sweet fruit and maple.
3.412 oz bottle. Golden color with a white soapy head. Lemon, yeast, bit of funk in the aroma. A little tart, white bread, citrus, spices, green grass. Pretty refreshing.
3.5Hazy yellow-gold pour with a thin, quickly fading white head. Aroma is lactic tartness, green wood, caramel, bread, fruity esters, lots of interesting fruity and citrus notes that are really hard to pin down. Flavor is tart and fruity up front, then some heavy bread and booziness, green wood, lots of lactic tartness and some nice cereal. Medium body, slightly syrupy, acidic, medium to heavy carbonation. Pretty good, a little sloppy and boozy, but it makes up for it by being interesting.
3.612 oz can 10/25/20 (Binny's Montgomery) 38° in Tulip. Pours a clear golden with a small white head. Aroma of funk, citrus, and Belgiany. Taste of the same with some bitterness on the back end. This light to medium bodied brew is well balanced and pretty darn tasty.
4.3I like it. Sneak 9.5% and can’t taste it is a win. Tart but now overpowering. Better than New Glarus - Belgian Red.
3.79.5%
4.3Like many sours, kind of a citrus funky basement smell. Definitely lemon, apple, and almost peach notes. Lively feel but dry wine-ish finish. For a 9.5 ABV very drinkable. Pours golden yellow with no head.
4.9Sour subtle strength
3.4Funk, citrus, apple flavors. A sour built on the foundation of Victory’s classic Golden Monkey. High octane 9.5% is well hidden in this beer.
3.0Good alcohol content/ bad taste
2.6Pour from can I bought at Total Wine. Contrary to other reviews, my pour had a small head that dissipated immediately. Aroma is fermented grapes (my fancy way of saying "wine"). Taste is very sour, but not unpleasant. It's a dry beer that kind of puckers the mouth and burns the throat. Little to no carbonation. Interesting, but not really a drinking beer.
3.1less malty and more hoppy that most triples. But still pretty refreshing.
3.912 oz can. Pours golden with tall, long-lasting, foamy white head and lively carbonation. Nose is of sour dough, funky yeast and fruity esters. Body is full and tangy. Taste is very sour, funky yeast, lemon zest and grassy hops. Finish is long and sour. Nice sour brew.
2.412 oz. can.
AROMA: Slightly sweet and yeasty. There are very (and I mean VERY) subtle hints of lemon, but you really have to search for it.
APPEARANCE: Pours a clear, straw-gold with a minimal white head that dissipates VERY quickly (don't blink or you'll miss it!).
TASTE: First sip and you get flavors akin to the SweetTarts candy from my youth. Hold it on the tongue and it starts to taste more like a hard cider. However, the "sour" portion has a somewhat chemical taste to it, which I find slightly off-putting. Flavors of lemon and apple come through if you let the beer warm up a bit.
MOUTHFEEL: It is very dry on the palate. It is thin-bodied with a sticky/tacky texture. The finish is long and all about the sour.
OVERALL: If someone handed this to me, sight unseen, I would never in a million years guess that it was a Belgian Tripel, much less that it was 9.5% ABV. As with most sours that I've tried the sour seems to be there just for the sake of being sour, and really doesn't complement the base beer in any way, shape, or form. I've had a few sours whose marrying of sour and the characteristics of the base beer, were superb. So I know it is possible to create a great sour beer. However, this is not one of those outstanding sours. Instead, it is just another run of the mill sour that really doesn't stand out from the crowd, other than its high ABV.
3.0Bottle from Varsity. Clear yellow with minimal head. Dry funky wine head. Pretty dry with cherry and grape, hides high ABV pretty well. Fair
2.2This reminds me why I don’t like sours. Tastes like a cider or a wine of some sort. To me this isn’t beer. To each his own.
4.1Exactly what I would expect from this brewery! Delicious. A sour beer doing exactly what it was designed for - to bring out a sour, yet sweet taste. Underlying notes of raspberry.
3.4Can. Pours a golden with a white head and tart fruity aroma. Taste is tart up front, fruity sour notes with Belgian yeast and esters into the sour finish.
4.0A 12 oz. can poured into a glass chalice produced a soapy, 1-finger, fast-fading white head over a mostly clear, straw-colored body. Some spotty lacing left quickly. Subtle, changing aromas of apples, pears, tart lemon and melon balanced by background notes of sweet malt and some Brett farmyard. Got a jolt of puckery sour apple, lemon rind and grass in the early sips, joined by some malty graininess and a sort of vinous quality late. Moderately crisp mouthfeel with a dry, lingering finish. Substantial ABV is pretty well-hidden until you try to start typing.
3.1I poured it from the can into a tulip. It pours golden with a white head. The aroma is sour fruit and dank. The taste is sour apples, lemon, and other fruit. There's a hint of Belgian yeast. It definitely hid the alcohol well. It was pretty much all sour though. I liked this slightly more than expected. I didn't love it though.
3.5Aroma of funk and citrus. Yellow and clear. Looks like a lager, which is deceptive for this being a 9.5% beer. Taste is sour, citrus, lemon, funky finish and some malt at the end. Very interesting beer. I will commend it for not tasting like alcohol at all.
3.312 ounce bottle in Kent Ohio. Smell the sour with fruit and slight vinegar notes. Golden hay in color it’s slight white head. Tastes sour and dry. Alcohol is well hidden. Estrogen aftertaste. Interesting sour. Cheers!
4.7Delicious sour mix with gentle wheat
1.0Pours a clear yellow with no head. Very dry and very bitter beer. This has some citrus notes to it. This is too bitter for me and I just don’t consider this to be a beer. I’ll pass on this.
1.0It tastes like someone put Mountain Dew and a bunch of Warheads in a blender. This is a beer where the first few sips come off as drinkable, but the overpowering sweetness and tang become too much halfway through the bottle. I like a good sour. This isn't one of them. Sorry Victory, love your other stuff...
3.7Pours a clear pale golden with a substantial white head. Grassy aroma. Taste is sour upfront, but not overly so. There is also a clean malty and grassy taste in the background. Light and thirst quenching with an ABV that goes unnoticed. A really good sour!
3.4Pale straw appearance with sudsy white rim. Aroma of banana, clove, tart cherry, salt with a twist of lime. First gulp is heavy on the sour pucker factor. Acidic and very tart. The fruit notes are drowned out by the focus on sour in my estimation. Finish is long and strong which could be a good or bad thing depending on your liking of sour beer. This one is ideal for sipping and warms the throat in a hurry. For me this one is just okay and the original Golden Monkey stands heads and shoulders above this variant.
3.6Keg at Draft House Seething, 12/12/19.
Clear golden blonde with a decent white cap.
Nose is big on citric sherbets, funk, faint yeast, straw, lime zest.
Taste comprises candied fruit peel, soured citric zest, lemon rind, hint of pear drop, grass, light funk, trace of yeast, mellow acidic bite.
Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a mellow pucker.
Decent for the ABV ... a fair refreshing drink for a 9% job.
