Victory Storm King Imperial Stout

Victory Storm King Imperial Stout

With a huge, Pacific Northwest hop aroma & character upfront, Storm King subsides into massive, roast malt complexity. More flavor than mere words can adequately describe. Rich and substantial, it will warm your heart.

3.8 As someone who is a big fan of Victory Brewing, my experience drinking the Storm King was the first time I've been disappointed by a product from this generally top notch Pennsylvania brewery. Currently trying my second bottle of a 2018 vintage with an August 2023 best by date, and although I'm getting more flavor and nuance on this second round, this beer falls short of its aim to challenge Great Divide's Yeti in the hoppy American-style imperial stout category. That being said, this beer is still very good, with a rich brown-black opaque appearance and creamy head, exceptionally smooth palate, and that intriguing interplay of bitter piney hop flavors and charred coffee malt flavors that again reminds me of the first time I had the classic Yeti. Some red fruit notes in the aroma and the taste, with hints of chocolate as well. I however did not pick up on the "massive espresso" as described on the bottle, which added to my disappointment. It does finish very smooth, but just doesn't strike me as particularly impressive in any category. A good American imperial stout, but fell short of high expectations.
4.1 0,33l bottle. Pours black with tan head. Aroma of roast, coffee, chocolate, licorice, vanilla. Taste is big, sweet, bitter roasted malt, coffee, milk chocolate, licorice, slight hint of smoke, with some bitter hops in the finish. Full body, very well balanced.
4.2 A solid IPS. Super dark appearance with mocha colored head. Some hop in the aroma...not the typical soy-sauce smell. Chocolate and coffee malt. Alcohol is well hidden. Used half of my 2nd sample combined with Bells Kalamazoo in a slow cooked pot-roast.
3.2 From the bottle. Dark, dark brown with a frothy to creamy beige crown that lingers for the duration. Aroma is ladened with an overtone of nail polish, which is undoubtedly the brew‘s biggest flaw. Beneath it: licorice and coffee. Taste is bittersweet up front with a fairly sharp hops bite at the finish. Body is full, carbonation is soft. Okay but the flat hops bitterness covers the richer, malty undertones that I prefer to make more of an appearance in this style.
4.1 A great aroma of malt, chocolate, coffee and some licorice, pours a dark brown color with thick tan head that lasted. A full bodied oily mouth feel with a taste of malt, mocha an de licorice with a boozy licorice finish.
3.7 A 12 fl. oz. bottle with an enjoy by date of 27th January 2021. Poured into a snifter glass. It was a dark dark brown to black in colour with a thin mocha head that dissipated fairly quickly and left some sparse lacing. Aromas of piney hops, roasted malts, chocolate and coffee. Tastes of roasted malts, piney hops, chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, light herbal and a hint of liquorice. Creamy, medium bodied with soft carbonation. Overall, a nice Imperial Stout, although I’m not too fond of the liquorice and herbal mix on the finish.
4.7 Twelve Ounce Bottle. Perfect!
4.6 I've heard Victory is discontinuing production of Storm King shortly. Can anyone confirm or (hopefully) correct this? It's a favorite, so I hope it's incorrect. Bad enough that I had to stock up to get me through the summer each spring (smile).
4.0 Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Black with a thin, tan head with lacing. Nose is roasted oats and chocolate. Unbelievable smoothness for a high ABV. It has a warmth, but not a fiery boozy taste. Bitter dark chocolate and espresso tastes. I had this one many times over a decade. Great move going back to the six pack (four packs are too rich for me). Happy New Year!
3.4 Kolsvart med tjockt beige skum. Doftar rostad malt, choklad, lite sirap och melass. Smaken fyllig, maltig, chokladig, lite syrlig. Eftersmaken mkt lång med syrliga, chokladiga toner, någon beska.
3.0 Pours a clear super dark ruby color with a thick tan head and great retention. Great lacing. Aroma of dark chocolate, dark fruit and booze. Dark bitter cocoa flavor dominates with a semi-harsh bitter hops finish. Too bitter for my liking. Heavy mouthfeel. The 9.1 ABV is pretty well hidden.
4.0 Color negro intenso, casi "chapapote" y espuma marrón suave. Aromas intensos a chocolate negro, cafés y maltas tostadas.
4.3 Black with nice, beige head. Coffee, roasted malt and pine in aroma. Mix of roasted and hoppy bitterness in taste. Extremely easy to drink for this ABV.
3.2 (> fruité (raisin, prune), sucré (brun, miel), ~café, first creamy, s’h2o-ïse, last café trop amer, malt-avare, s’est indus)
4.1 355ml bottle, almost 3 years old I believe. Pours black with a very well retained beige/tan head, nice lacing too. Aroma of roast malts, piney hops, coffee, dark chocolate. Taste follows suit, roast malts, coffee, dark chocolate, as it warms the hop presence grows, piney, and very bitter, some dark fruit and liquorice, big bitter finish. Medium bodied, smooth, creamy, soft carbonation. A really nice imperial stout, the hoppy bite is still strong even after 3 years of ageing, I would bet a fresh bottle would be entering black IPA territory if the hops are any stronger in it.
4.0 Very solid coffee flavored chocolate stout. Very well put together. Nice bitter finish. Dark fruits dominate the taste of this beer. Low carbonation. This is what a stout should taste like.
4.6 Love it! One of the greatest stouts ever. Lots of chocolate, slight coffee with a leathery bitterness that is phenomenal! Get some!
3.8 Bottle at home. Three year old. Pours a dark brown to black colour with a small beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, dark wood, chocolate truffles, pine and grass. Roasted flavour as well with coffee, oak, ash, dark chocolate and grass in a little dry ending. Has a silky mouth feel, medium to full body and a light to medium bitterness. Well roasted and the aroma is especially delicious.
3.3 Bottle from Systembolaget, cellar stored. Deep Brown with beige head that disappears fairly quickly. Leathery with cocoa, a bit of cardboard and liquorice. Past it's prime, I'll need to revisit.
4.0 Sysitumma lasissa, jossa mukana tumman ruskea vaahto. Tuoksu on paksu, tumma ja täyteläinen. Mukana on kahvia, suklaata ja tummaa hedelmää. Maku on edelleen täyteläinen ja pitkäkestoinen. Paahtuneet maltaat maistuvat. Loistava IS kaiken kaikkiaan.
4.0 From notes: 29.3.2017 Colour: black Head: frothy, brown Aroma: roasty, raisin Taste: full body, medium carbonation, complex, licorice, roasty, bitter, warm
3.7 Very welcoming aroma: soft, lots of warm chocolate, only gently burt, some hops. Taste again lots of chocolate, followed by a little coffee. Distinctly astringen, grainy finish. Aftertaste bitter: hopbitter rather than burt malts. Lots of hops ( a bit too much for my taste, should learn to look up the IBU on the bottle first... ) and that yeasty taste I have noticed with moe Am. stouts. I liked it at first but now less so... Still very nice and tasty brew.
4.0 Pour from a 12oz bottle. Deep inky black brew with small tan head. Aroma of toasted malts, dark fruit, earth. Taste is sweet roast and dark fruits up front, coffee emerging towards the finish, a little boozy at the very end. Chewy palate. Tasty.
4.2 (Bottle) Opaque black body with a small disappearing tan head. Aroma dark roast coffee, wood. Full bodied, foamy and chewy. Flavor is moderately sweet (some berry), and mild bitterness that lasts and builds a little as the sweetness fades; lots of woody notes and hint of smoke; mild chocolate; coffee and peat. A lot going on in the flavor; dynamic.
4.0 Lovely imperial stout, swinging from one extreme to the other, starting with a rich, gentle, indulgent sweet chocolate-and-caramel front before doing a one-eighty and plowing straight into a prolonged, clingy, palate-scouring bitter back end. Mostly eschews the dark fruits found in most impy stouts for anise, dark roast coffee, and hints of vanilla among the brief sweet streak, but the real treasure is the prolonged, biting finish, dry as hell yet still dusted with cocoa and roasty malt. Pours a dark, dark brown that grows black, with a fleeting off-white head and ample lacing. Surprising amount of caramel on the nose, not a whole lot of chocolate and roasted notes. Creamy texture has just a hint of alcohol warmth. Delicious.
4.1 Aroma - is rich with roast, coffee, chocolate, and some bold hops and. booze. Appearance - black as night body. Some tan head that settles slowly. Good sud lacing. Taste - rich roast, chocolate, alcohol, coffee, and licorice. Palate - full body, thick texture, average carbonation, astringent finish.
4.1 Tap@tommyknocker. Opaque black color with tanned head. Aroma has coffee, licorice, dark malt, vanilla. Taste is malty sweet with long bitter aftertaste. Flavors of coffee, malt, bitter elements, licorice, vanilla.
3.8 Bottle, Wine Warehouse. This is one I'd assumed I'd tried every time I saw it - and perhaps I did and somehow didn't rate it. But today I was determined to take home a case of singles I'd yet to rate and I checked everything in the store until I got to 24 - and lo and behold, no rating for Storm King. Pours dark brown with a soft tan head. Aroma is sweet chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, caramel, light coffee, sweat. Flavor is dark chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, coffee beans and liquid, earth. Nice bitter back end. Flavorful but not complex. Very solid.
4.3 Pours almost black from the bottle. Medium beige head. Palette is strong, but not over bearing. Flavor is very good with coffee overtones and caramel after taste. Great beer to accompany your dinner.
