3.6 From a bottle. Pours clear brown with thin tan head. Roasted nuts caramel and raisins in the nose. Sweet caramel maltiness balanced with pine resin and a bitter finish... Interesting.
3.9 A: Dark Brown Hue, Passes Little Light, Off Brown Head, Good Lacing S: Dark Chocolate Malts, Bready, Mild Bitter Hops T: Dark Chocolate Malts, Mld Caramel, Earthy M: Good Carbonation, Medium to Full Bodied, Malty, Bitter Overall, a good hearty winter beer with nice malt blend.
3.7 Draft at Standard Tap. Pours a dark, clean, amber, with fluffy beige head. Nose of roast, caramel, chocolate, dark fruit, piney and grassy hops. Medium to full body with a creamy mouthfeel. Lots of sweet caramel and roasted malts with potent pine. Fairly bitter finish. Good beer, taste like a black ipa, doesn’t really look like one.
3.7 12oz bottle, enjoyed well beyond the freshness date. Dark brownish ruby in color. Strong malt, pine and booze in the aroma. Taste is pretty similar, with some citrus hops and moderate bitterness. Not bad at all.
3.6 Dark Dark brown pour with reddish hue, a few inches beige head of medium density. Decent lacing. Delicious powdery scent - creamy citrus hops dominate. Taste is scotchy and carmel malt, a bit smokey, citrus hops too, again pretty creamy. Average carbonation, watery mouthfeel, dry, boozy finish. This is a great black IPA and a steal in the dollar bin. Because it was supposed to be enjoyed by a full year ago, I’m stoked to try a fresh one. Overall tastes like a scotch ale/IPA hybrid.
3.7 Dark ruby brown, tan head, thin layer remaining. Caramel, orange, raisin, sweet. Hops are there to balance sweetness, but to me the sweet overpowers the hop flavor. Good, but not a style I prefer.
2.9 Appears reddish brown with aroma of sweet malt, raisins, and dried fruit much like a strong ale or barleywine. Incredible marshallow like beige head. Terrible beer if you think you are getting an ipa. Taste of bitter hops, no fresh hop notes as supposed to be. Very dry finish. Great if you think you are getting into a strong ale. Not sure what to think...
3.7 Bottle from mane liquor. Pours a dark chestnut brown with a nice tanned head. Roasted malts and hops on the nose with loads of dark fruits. Very bold smelling stuff!! The taste is much the same with a nice hoppy sweetness at the end. Dark fruits play a big role in the sweetness. Don't mind this one
3.5 Bottle. Pours a hazy dark brown (not black, like most Black IPAs), with a medium head and a fair bit of sediment. Looks kind of like a barleywine in the glass. Powerful aroma, with caramel malts and assertive floral/pine hops vying for attention. Flavor is more hop-driven, with a stronger malt backbone than most IPAs, but less maltiness than most other Black IPAs. A bit astringent on the finish. A solid but not outstanding example of the style.
2.8 Pours reddish brown, half finger tan head, nice lacing. Aroma toast, dough, toasty malt, earthy hops. Taste is bitter dark malt, earthy hops, slight caramel and toasted malt, bitter finish. Mouth feel medium, lower carbonation, astringent bite from black malt, finish is slightly on the dry side. Overall, not bad, a bit bitter, not well balanced, doesn’t fit my palate.
3.3 7/04/2010: Victory Yakima Twilight... Aroma: Bread crust; toasted caramel/toffee malts; floral and earthy hops. Appearance: Reddish-brown color; quite dark; some Flavor: Palate: Sweet bitter with the thick, cheqwy toffee malt followed by quite a bit of earthy bitterness with a citrus flair at the end. Overall: Decent, drinkable beer; was hoping for something a bit more refined; I would like to try this beer again... 12 fl. oz. bottle shared by ASB. Thanks Scott! Rating #798 for this beer.
3.9 This was good. It had a great mix of floral hop and roasted malt aromas. Dark brown color with medium head. Definitely not as black as most black IPA’s. Full palate with some weight that I attribute to heavy malts. Big toast flavors with solid hops presence on the floral and piney side, a little sweetness on the back end. Not a total palate wrecker but close.
4.1 Bottle poured a cola reddish brown hue containing some small sediment w/ a large beige head sticking to the glass as it diminishes. Big sweet malty aromas of caramel, toffee, chocolate, nutty, grain, cookie, plums, and orange. Initial flavor is heavy sweet w/ a moderate bitter finish of long duration. Tastes are caramel, plum, orange, molasses, light roasted rye, and sweet prunes. Full bodied, syrupy texture, soft carbonation, and a moderate warmth in the finish.
3.6 355 ml bottle at beerbistro. Pours a cloudy orangey brown with large tan head. Aroma is roasty malt and very spicy hops. Flavour is big on green, spicy hops with toasty/roasty malt giving hints of caramel and chocolate. Spicy bitterness in finish. Not obvious as a black IPA but nice.
2.8 Pretty bitter beer. Tastes a lot like what I would imagine pine trees taste like. If you like bitter beers, I would recommend it.
3.5 12 ounce bottle. Pours a dark reddish brown with a small tan head. Aroma of malt, citrus, caramel, and grass. Taste is roasted malt, citrus, caramel, grass, and pine. Interesting and different.
3.2 From bottle. Poured a brown in color with small thick head. Aroma was sweet with biscuit and bread, some caramel. Taste follows with a little bitterness.
3.6 Wouldnt call this a black ipa, reminds me more of an india brown ale. Nontheless, nice malty flavor with balanced hop difference. Hops are nice at the end but dont overpower the nice malt body.
4.0 Had a taste of this on tap from Alexandrias in Findlay. Definitely on the sweet side, maybe not fresh, but solid. Citrus hops.
4.0 12 oz bottle (suspected of being ~ at best by date) served in a snifter. A - hazy, dark mahogany; a few drops of sediment at the bottom of the bottle were added and allowed to settled in the glass. Tan head of moderate size and retention. S - earthy; malty; toasted grains; less hoppy than expected or remembered. Rich, attractive and interesting aroma with a nice toffee/chocolate tone. T: Interesting and moderately strong flavor profile, with a pronounced and complex hop component well balanced by a substantial roasted malt base. A surprising earthy and roasted malt flavor (with some hoppiness) lingers in the mildly bitter aftertaste. High ABV not obvious. Light-medium carbonation; Full body.
3.9 Pours brown with a big hoppy nose. Hops and a light roasty malt flavor dominate the flavor profile. Overall very very good.
3.4 Bottle->SA. Medium brown with thick lig tan head. Aroma: sweet malt, nuts, bread, caramel. Taste: sweet malt and citrus hops, with a bittersweet finish. Just OK.
3.0 Big tan head over amber-red body (thought this was suppose to be a black IPA?) Aroma of grass and lemony hops and some oxidation and chalk. Taste of big bitterness upfront and more bitterness afterwards. Roast and coffee (doesn’t come out in aroma much, but in flavor) palate hoppy and roasty
2.5 The description says this is a "heavyweight battle between Yakima hops and dark roasted malt", battle over, hops crushed malt and not in a good way. Pours a dark brownish, strong hop persents. Taste comes through with strong piney, resiney and bitter. Great label, down hill after that.
4.0 This was my first Black IPA, it’s pretty interesting, Thin head with nice lacing very rich sort of medium hazy brown color. The taste is typical IPA, maybe mellowed slightly with a "roasty" almost coffee-like characteristic.
3.5 12oz bottle. Pours a deep walnut brown color with a very thin tan head. Not much on the aroma. Hints of roasted malt, nuts, and a very faint hoppiness. Wow, taste is a whole other story! Very roasty and bitter. Lots of roasted malt, burn toast, some oak, and piny/earthy hops!
3.9 Poured from a bottle into a chalice. Consumed on a patio. Pours dark rust brown with a generous tan head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is citrus hops and malt that comes through amplified in the flavour. The dark malts compliment the pleasantly bitter hops beautifully. This is a perfect patio beer for early spring. An easy drinking dark IPA. I love it!
3.8 Dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma of pine and citrus. Excellent hop bitterness to balance the large amount of malt in this one. Rich mouth feel of the malt. Lingering and filling finish that is slightly dry.
3.8 From notes: Poured hazy ruby red-amber with a 1-finger bone-colored head. Deep, rich grapefruity hops aroma with a touch of caramel sweetness underneath. Full body with a moderate thickness. Flavor of piney, resiny hops with a dry finish. Mild nutty note beneath.
2.4 pours a nice redish brown with a big tan head. This may be one of the worst beers I have ever had. The bitterness over whelms everything. This beer starts off sweet then goes immediately to bitterness. There are bitter hops, dark fruit flavors and bitter citrus flavor, YUCK!!
