Weihenstephaner Tradition

Weihenstephaner Tradition

Our reddish brown dark lager “Tradition” with its mild aroma of hops smells like roasted malt and impresses with its sweet caramel flavor which is followed by a slight bitterness. Goes well with hearty dishes, such as roasts, poultry and game. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

3.8 Bottle from Beers Of Europe. Clear amber/brown with a thick beige head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of berries, orange rind and stewed tea. Flavour of brown bread, cranberry and rust. Medium body with a slick texture. Soft fizz. Slightly sharper than most other Dunkels but it’s very enjoyable.
3.6 500ml bottle from Beers of Europe: BB 13th May 2021. Poured into an old Wolnzacher Brauhaus 'Hopfenperle' glass tankard at home on 15th Jan 2021. Lovely clean and clear reddy brown body, beige topping. It's a semi-sweet malty brew with a caramel front to both the aroma and taste. My sweet tooth really liked it.
3.4 How: bottle. BB: 01.09.21 Head: two fingers, white. Colour: deep amber. Aroma: dark bread, herbal, light caramel, light licorice. Taste: medium body, average carbonation, dark bread, herbal, caramel, balanced bitterness. Dark bread in herbal medium long aftertaste. Simple yet solid.
3.3 500ml bottle from Beru Vykhodnoy in Moscow. Pours clear brown with a tall beige head. Aroma is caramel, some bread, faint roastiness. Taste is medium sweet, caramel, malt, bread, light bitterness.
3.7 500ml bottle from Beers of Europe (£2.69): Caramel brown to copper coloured with quite a foamy & thick head about 2.5cm tall that holds pretty well too. The nose is slightly sweet with some caramel & light bread malts but it's not quite as strong as expected; I got a nutty aroma around the middle with faint fruits right at the end. The taste is fairly similar, albeit slightly stronger with earthy malts & some roasted flavours with a bit more sweetness from a combination of sugars & a tiny bit of chocolate too. It's well-balanced at least & quite easy-going with a smooth, moderately carbonated feel to it, it's just a shame it wasn't stronger on the nose.
3.1 Bottle from Waitrose, Portishead, UK. Dark brown/red with small offwhite head, clear. Aroma of roasted malts, grain, rotten leaves. Bitter taste, full body, average carbonation. Just alright.
3.6 500ml bottle brewed in Germany at 5.2%. Ultra dark yet surprisingly clear chestnut colour, with a neat decent-lasting ivory head. Slightly fruity aroma (possibly some sweetcorn), reminiscent of their Helles, but with some notes of Fig Roll among the brown bread sweetness. Moderate+ carbonation, a bit much for my liking. Refreshing without being thin. Some grassy hops, then some slight toasted wood-bark notes, think cinnamon sans the spice, some baking chocolate powder elements but without the bitterness, some slight fruity raisin notes, and in the finish a more honey than caramel malt sweetness. A slightly different Dunkel in the typical way Weihenstephaner do things, and although not my favourite example of the style, I can't really say anything bad about it. Well worth trying for those interested in the style, and makes a fine summertime equivalent of a 'winter warmer' if you're thirsty on a hot night.
3.4 On tap at Weihenstephaner, pours a clear chestnut brown with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out toasted malt and light caramel malt. Flavour is similar, with toasted caramel, toasted nuts, and bready malt. Bready and caramely. Good stuff.
3.7 Bottle from Beers Of Europe. Pours a clear mahogany colour with a creamy medium sized off white head. Fairly lively carbonation with small bubbles. Nice lacing. Aroma is malty, dark fruits, cherries, berries, red currants, bread, brown sugar and a little bit of caramel. Taste is again malty, more dark fruit, berries, bread, caramel, a little nutty, fairly sweet and hardly any hop bitterness. Soft smooth mouthfeel. Very light carbonation on the palate. Thin to medium bodied. Good.
3.0 Jotenkin limumainen.
3.6 Bottle picked up from REWE, Zolling and consumed at home Attenkirchen, Monday 14th October 2019 in the company of Dad and Pauline. Pours conker brown, good clarity, with an off white head. Some brown sugar, soft mouthfeel, mid carbonation, a little nutty edge. Good and yet I am surprised that I have not had this before.
3.3 Keg at the Weihenstephaner Brewery in 2016. Deep ruby with an offwhite head. Aroma of currants, chewy grain and caramel. Decent malty, sweet flavours, with dried fruit and brown bread notes.
3.7 Caramel taste, malt/copper nose. Dark red-brown colour, lasting short head.
3.4 Creamy dark caramel colours with nice head. Smooth toasted caramel flavours. A classic brew.
3.5 50cl bottle from Alko. Poured mahogany dark color with a thick white head. Sweet malty, caramel, light toast. Mild bready, malty, some toast, some caramel. Clean, malty. Textbook.
3.6 Aroma brød, malt, karamell, epletoner. Utseende klaar rødbrun med offwhite skum. Smak hvetemalt, karamell, moden banan, krydder. God fylde, saftig, god balanse. Flaske på Hamna og Bier med DjOeye, 50cl 5,2%

3.5 Creamy off white head on a rich mahogany coloured body. Dark berry, malt & raspberry aroma. Medium to full bodied, soft, thick, & cloying with very little carbonation. Malt, brown sugar & berries
3.5 Draught at the brewery. Pours clear tawny with a large, frothy beige head, long retention. Medium toasted malt, light caramel malt notes, faint earthy hops and light bitterness with a clean, dry finish. Medium-light body and medium carbonation.
3.4 500ml bottle at home. Pours an extremely dark reddish brown, lovely off white head that leaves loads of lacing. Bready malts, bit of a coppery, metallic flavour here, small bit of hop bitterness. Easy drinker
3.5 0,5 l bottle from a local bottle shop. Clear dark red brown with a mid size pale beige head. Looks really good. Soft malty smell with some sweetness. Taste starts intensive malty, roasted elements, but also smooth at the palate. Shy but present hop in the background. Nice. As expected.
3.5 Appearance: bright copper with good tan head Aroma: light caramel malt Palate: medium light mouthfeel, medium carbonation Taste: caramel, malt, balanced bitterness
4.3 Caramel, roasted malt aromas come through and the flavour brings out the sweet caramel and dark fruit flavours with a bittersweet finish. One of the best lager dunkel's I've had.

4.2 Oh, this is lovely. Munich Dunkels are my favourite style and this is a beaut. Pours a dark ruby brown and smells clean and sweet--the sweetness of dates and raisins. It's masterfully brewed, I think, because the sweetness of the malt is pegged in very discreetly by touches of hop bitterness. This is not one of the most viscous dark lagers, so that makes it very drinkable and, if you're not careful (my glass is disappearing too fast) sessionable. The mouthfeel is medium to thin, but that works in a dunkel. Parkin-like notes in the biscuity, caky flavour. It reminds me of the Augustiner dunkel, one of my favourites--though it's not so yeasty. Magnificent beer.
3.3 Bottle from K-market, Helsinki. Pours brown with a medium-sized frothy head. The aroma features bready, slightly toasty maltiness with a touch of bisquit and nuts. Lagery, malty. Taste is malty and bready with the initial light sweetness fading gradually towards finish. Mild hoppiness. Bread, bisquit and some caramel. The palate is medium-bodied and smooth, low to average in carbonation. No surprises here: standard but good quality dunkel.
3.4 0,5 l bottle. Pours amber brown (beautifully red when looked directly to sunlight) with big quite dense medium lasting light tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, bread, some caramel and toffee. Taste is light to medium caramel sweetness and light bitter. Body is light to medium, texture slick and carbonation average. Finish is medium, caramel and some herbal like bitterness. Despite plenty of roast character it's very drinkable.
3.6 A surprise find at l'Apero, the Belgian beer outlet near Nanjing Fuxing. Aroma: overwhelmingly yeasty. Appearance: clear, the darkest of dark brown, 5mm. off-white foam. Palate: rather light-bodied and slick, soft carbonation, well-balanced malty and sweet. Taste: medium-sweet, malty, some iron. This is the predominantly barley-based version of the wheat beer, which is a superior drink in my opinion.
3.4 06-02-18 // 500ml bottle from the brewery, shared. Clear amber brown with a small head. Loads of roasted malts with a mild caramel sweetness amd some toffee. Mild bitter finish. Light body. Good style example.
