2.8 0.5L bottle. Huge carbonation, wasn’t a gusher but CO2 dropped out of solution when serving filling the glass with 90% foam. Gigantic tan head. Color is almost black, opaque. Nose is intense (CO2 driving aroma aggressively) roasted malts mainly, lightly roasted coffee dominate the aroma, some kind of tart notes there (infection?). Left it to sit for 4-5 hours to reduce the CO2 cause taste was very harsh. Taste follows nose. Balanced, light sweet, nice roastiness, coffee, caramel notes, no hops whatsoever. Not very complex... No off flavor, so could have been bottled before reaching FG. Nice short aftertaste, mainly roasty things going on. Light body, very low (after 5 hours) carbonation. I expected more.
4.5 Be aware! This beer is much more quicker & dangerous than the pirate ship. It will attack you right away you open the bottle. Fortunately only 3,8% ABV. Totally black with a very, very large brown head. Aromas of coffee, cocoa, dark chocolate & milk chocolate. Medium sweet, light bitter and a medium dry finish. Light body, creamy texture & lively carbonation.
3.8 It says on the label "bottle conditioned, pour slowly". Try as I may as the dark treacle coloured fizzing liquid glugged sluggishly into the glass a three finger dark beige head loomed up and over the rim. The volatile elements of coffee, milk chocolate and bitter liquorice force a flare in the nostrils and a deep intake of the rich aromas. Languidly the lingering head settles lacing the sides of glass. Softly the lush liquid rolls over the tongue and around the taste buds bringing more coffee, caramel, chocolate and liquorice. Like a Fry's chocolate cream bar simultaneously bitter and sweet it slips down coating the epiglottis. What comfort and charm in this most delectable feast of a drink.
3.4 Cask at The Lazy Bulldog, Athens. Muddy brown. Cold stale coffee and chocolate in the nose, bitter with sweet chocolaty notes and a little roastiness in the mouth. Smooth, medium body, bitter finish with coffee notes. Nice.
3.9 Dark brown with small head. Nice coffee aroma. Medium sourness with coffee bitterness, not heavy and even refreshing.
3.7 Bottle, slow gusher. Nearly black with huge tan head. Roasted malt, milk chocolate and coffee aroma. Similar flavour plus some caramel. Finishes with coffee bitterness and notes of licorice. Pretty good for the ABV.
3.6 Keg at Beany Green, Southbank. Tasting possibly hampered by being out by a cold wintery Thames. Feint sweet malty aroma. Deep and dark, like my eyes. Good creamy beige head. A sharp bitterness bursting through sweetness. Brown sugar, lactose, coffee and berries. Thick bodied. Soft yet crisp in me gob. Long understated finish. Enjoyable. Definitely sweet but the coffee then gives it a kick.
3.6 Cask Half Pint at White Horse Old Ale Festival 2012, Parsons Green, London in Nov 2015 - Dark Brown / Black in colour. Average foamy tan head. Excellent lacing. Malty; roasty malts, lots of coffee, sugar, some chocolate. Fruity; dark fruits, raisins. Sweet roast coffee malty throughout. Very flavourful for such a low ABV. Very drinkable. Very nice Sweet Stout! (2015-11-20)
3.5 Bottle from Prohibition Wines. Pours a dark brown/black colour with a beige head. Slightly antiseptic aroma. Taste of milky coffee, milk chocolate, liquorice, wood and cigar ash. Bitter, woody finish. Very tasty considering the low ABV. An enjoyable milk stout.
3.6 Bottle. Aroma has a definite coffee and licorice note. Pors dark with thin bubble top. Tastes sweet malts and caramel. But very smooth and with a growing licorice flavor on the palate. I have not had WB beer before but will check out more.
3.7 Bottled (Spontaneous KSMT tasting).Black colour, mediumsized beige foamy head, which leaves some lace. Aroma is coffee, roasted malts, some vanilla, liquorice and mild toffeeish notes as well. Flavour is very similar, in a very smooth way. Rather nice for being this low abv’d.
3.6 Tap. @ Irreale, Madrid, Spain. A: Dark brown. T: Roasted malt, coffee, sweet, chocolate.
3.7 Aroma: Slight/medium aroma of malts, caramel, chocolate, roasted malts and coffee. Appearance: Opaque dark brown/black beer with slight yeast and with a slight/medium beige/brown head. Taste/Palate: Starts medium sweet with malts, caramel and chocolate; ends slightly bitter and dry with roasted malts and coffee. Overall: This beer is rather intense, complex and balanced. Has a lot of roasted flavour for a Sweet Stout, with that lactose giving a nice sweet touch. Extremely tasty for its abv, but the aroma could have been stronger.
3.7 Bottle. Teku. Deep brown/black with medium, light brown head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts (mainly coffee, secondly chocolate), moderately caramel and light ashy notes. Taste is lightly bitter mainly due to addition of coffee, also lightly acidic, but first of all semi-sweet (chocolate-like). Medium body, slick/thick texture, soft carbonation, finish is coffee and chocolate with light sweetness. In general very good composition of roasted malts, which gives it nice and smooth taste.
3.6 QButelka 500ml. Czarny kolor. Dosc wysoka bezowa piana ,ktora opada dosc szybko do obreczy. Aromat kawy lukrecji czekolady kakao. Slaba kremowa tekstura i niska karbonacja.
3.4 Draft at Bru Craft. Looks and smells like coffee. Tastes of roasted malts and glossy coffee sugar candies. Hints of vanilla, hazelnut, currants, and chocolate liquorice. Smooth but feels watery for a Milk Stout. Not overly sweet. Not overly bitter. Not overly complex.
4.2 Bottle from Hops & Crafts Exeter, pours black with a foamy beige head. Aroma of fresh coffee, some roasted malt & fruit notes. Taste coffee up front with dark malts ,roast, dark chocolate ,lactose & so,e fruit, light bodied ,smooth & slightly chewy, perfectly carbonated ,good mouth feel ,the finish is dry, roasty , & creamy ,not as sweet as expected for a milk stout ,which is good in my opinion . Really well made low strength stout that tastes bigger than its strength !
2.4 Pitch black with a dark cream head. Pours very lively and keeps it’s head. Smells of coffee with chocolate undertones. Tastes very sweet coffee. Not a fan. -- rated with beerbasher/winphone
3.5 On tap at the Euston Tap. Dark brown, off white foam. Mild roastiness, sweet lactic almost sugary character, then strong iced coffee flavour. Getting a bit bored of gimmicky coffee beers but this was actually quite nice.
3.5 500ml bottle (3.8% ABV). Almost black with a two-finger beige head. Aroma of light coffee, roasted malt, milk chocolate, vanilla. Bittersweet taste of coffee, chocolate, roasted malt. Oily-silky texture, soft carbonation, bitter finish.
3.7 Rich aroma of coffee and vanilla. Silky in the mouth. Low carbonation and minimal head.
3.2 Bottle – pours a dark brown almost black colour with a thick frothy creamy light brown coloured head. A cappuccino coffee aroma including the chocolate. Moderately sweet coffee flavour, a little cocoa and a gentle spicy bitter finish.
3.3 Medium beige head. Barely translucent deep dark red body. Fruity dusty cocoa aroma with herbal cedar wood notes. Dryish mealy fruity herbal taste with cocoa and cedar wood notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mealy mouthfeel. Dry roasty fruity cocoa aftertaste with dusty floral notes. Lovely. Harmonic and easy-drinking. (0.5l draft at Gulating Restaurant, Lillestrøm. ABV listed at 3.8%.)
4.0 05.05.2016, 0,5l bottle (as 3,8%) @ home: Nice light brown creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly rich and dry roasted, espresso, dark malts, minerals, lactose, nuts, caramel, chocolate, mild grassy smoked chillies, hops. Taste is dry roasted, weeds, roasted grain, minerals, mild espresso, grass, hops, lactose, burnt caramel, cocoa, mild grassy chillies. Medium bitterness, slightly dry mineraly mouthfeel. The first sip is very burnt and dry mineraly. But the taste kind if grows on you, so it ends up pretty nice, specifically for the low ABV. Still, it could have been pretty amazing if the taste had lived up to the lovely aroma.
3.2 Draft at Churchkey. Pretty much opaque dark brown color. Aroma of chalky cocoa and licorice. Taste is earthy earthy cocoa powder and coffee grounds. Nice.
4.1 Draft @ Tilquin English Fest ’16, day2.
4.0 Tasting @MaltAttacks. Great and light milk stout, refreshing but also full of taste. Great dark colour. Mouthfull palate
2.5 Small but thick coffee head. Dark brown (almost black). Smells cheap instant coffee, fresh coffee beans, green peas and celery. Taste vegetables with a hont of roast. Body is medium.
5.0 All that I can say is just "WOW"!!! Absolutely gorgeous and wonderful! Served in a snifter from a bottle. Pours almost black with a little beige head. The aroma is just an amazing mixture of roasted coffee, caramel, roasted malts and a pinch of hops. The taste is a great combination of coffee, burnt sugar and raisins. The mouthfeel is rich and full bodied, smooth with a wonderful slight bitter aftertaste. Absolutely fantastic!!!
3.9 3.8% version. Black body, big fluffy brownish head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, ashes, hoppy notes. Flavours of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, some dried fruits, ashes. Medium roasted malt finish, some bitterness. Long roasted malt aftertaste. Smooth body, medium carbo. Quite flavourfull for such a session beer!
