Liquid does not break the Fast - was a rule of fasting at the times of the Benedictine monks in Weissenohe. For this, now we owe the Mirror Carp as Fasting food and the strong Doppelbock for liquid intake during this barren time. In this tradition, we have brewed for you our strong Bonator the dark Doppelbock, physically and spiritually strengthening during the "staaden" time. A dark Doppelbock, spicy and strong as the tradition requires. Suitable for: goulash, pork shoulder, roasted meat, hearty snacks and strong game dishes

3.8 My bottle is 8%abv. A nice dopplebock and easy to drink but there are far better examples out there.
3.5 Clear ruby body with a big foamy and quite persistent ivory head. Aroma is caramel, cherries. Taste is sweet, fruity, malty. Long fruity finish. Medium body soft carbonation smooth/slicky texture.
2.8 Malzig, leicht Rosinen, Getreide, schöne dunkle Kupferfarbe, in der Nase recht unscheinbar. Ein ziemlich zurückhaltender Doppelbock, sehr gefällig, dafür hohe Drinkability.
4.2 Bottle from TC Maddington, and sadly the last available as this is one I have been waiting to get a hold of for some time now. Into a Doppelbock tulip at just on cool. Settles a shimmering, dusty mahogany in body with a loose but steady off-white half inch of foam that ebbs a thin lace. Big melanoidins on the nose; sticky dates in syrup, pumpernickel rye bread, toffee brittle brought to its darkest limit, light sherry and caramelised fig, a hit of earthy top-soil, umami of sautéed, beefy mushrooms and a spicy, sweet lick of alcohol. On the palate it is sweet, mildly caramel bitter and mildly fruity with so much melanoidins of malt coming through giving it a richness of sweet and bitter notes. Good body and well rounded. Alcohol offers up a balancing nuance and sees it warming in the finish but not hot. Dried, fruit mince pie with nutty pastry is the palate. Dates, sultana, madeira, prunes in syrup with a bready, burnt toast character that accenuates rather than detracts. This is a lovely Bock. Well worth the wait. Carbonation kept to a light spritz giving it full volume to fill out and hit that 'liquid bread' trait of a solid Doppelbock. Lovely stuff!!! (50cL, BB 12/02/21, Thirsty Camel Maddington)
4.1 Bottles from House Of Trembling Madness. Clear amber/ruby body with a thin beige head. Low carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of toffee, brown bread, raisin and dried leaves. Flavour of Marmite, nuts and salted caramel. Medium body with a slick texture. Light fizz. Bold and tasty.
3.8 500ml bottle brewed in Germany at 8%. Clear copper-scarlet with a nice-sized, so-so duration head. Toffee and nut aroma, a little figgy biscuit. Lowish+ carbonation, robust texture to begin, finishes thin. Lightly green fruity, nearly herbal at the start, darkening into juicy raisin-cum-grape. Rich bready finish, chocolatey and nutty in the aftertaste. Sweet, even for a doppelbock, and a little more so than I'd like. Very fair all-rounder.
3.9 Bottle. Wine Rack, Sharrow, Sheffield. Clear, rich copper colour. Sturdy and thick, lasting, semi lacing, cream coloured head. Nose has toffee bits. Caramel malt. Spicy hop. Brown sugar. Taste is sweet and malty. Touch of hop spice bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel. Plenty of body. ABV is somewhat evident. Fine carbonation. Sweet and a little nutty on the finish.
3.1 500ml bottle from Utobeer, Borough Market, London. Dark brown + small off-white head. Sweet bready malt, caramel, brown bready, light roasty, light bitterness, light spices, light metallic, some booze. Enjoyable but tastes a bit muted for an 8% doppelbock.
3.2 Bottle, 500 ml shared with Miro B and Max. Brown with small off white head. Malty, caramel, some chocolate notes, thin finish, somewhat watery.
3.4 Bottle at home, dark red brown beer, small head. Aroma is malt, caramel, sweet, dark ripe fruit, raisins, some roasted. Taste is the same, bitter, sweet, quite some caramel, not bad.
2.8 Brown with a fleeting, foamy head. Fairly subdued aroma that goes light on the caramel for a bock. Roasted grains dominate with a slightly medicinal undercurrent. Taste is mildly bitter the whole way through. Medium to full-bodied, mild carbonation. Empty of flavor and aroma for a beer packing 8%. Still quite drinkable though.
3.9 Bottle shared at Colin's pre lockdown 30k tasting. An attractive clear amber copper coloured pour with a lasting beige froth. Aroma is nice raisin loaf, brown sugars, bread, gooey malt loaf.. Flavour is composed of medium sweet z loads of dried fruit, light cinnamon, dried fruits, apple, brown sugars, brandy snap. Palate is semi sweet rounded, moderate carbonation.
3.7 Bottle split at the Tickombe 30K last tasting before lockdown 2, thanks to Fergus, 01/11/20. Chestnut brown with a decent beige cap. Nose is sweet malts, biscuit, fruit loaf, toffee, dried fruit rinds. Taste comprises fruit cake, raisins, dark malts, toffee, dates, light cocoa powder, brown sugar dusting. Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a kiss of alcohol. Solid well balanced bock.
3.9 bottiglia 50 cl, 8,0% vol, bel cappello di schiuma beige media grana persistente, colore ambrato carico limpido, al naso malto tostato miele zucchero di canna, in bocca malto caramello frutta sciroppata uvetta spezie, corpo rotondo, bevibilissima per i suoi 8,0% vol (attenzione!), carbonazione leggera, oily, molto dolce con amaro moderato. Nutriamoci come i monaci! Ottima. c. Bottega della Birra Arona 25.09.20
4.1 I read the label on the bottle before I bought this and couldn't understand a word of what it said. I was going into the unknown. It reminded me of the time I took Pam Hofferson home after a lock in at the Monk and Mongrel one Tuesday afternoon. We made love, it was magical despite Pam celebrating her 71st birthday the weekend before. The old girl could still rock and so does this beer.
4.0 Bottle. Brown color, clear, red translucent, thick offwhite head. Aroma of caramel malts, roasted malt, dark bread, cake, hints of nuts, peanuts, chestnut, raisins on the fruity side, pine woods. Smooth body, average/soft carbonation, clean finish malty, fairly dry, light spicy. Taste is quite sweet with a proper balance, smooth, round, not annoying. Finish is a bit buring as it warms up, but no surprise as this is an 8%. A delicious doppelbock really.
3.9 Butelka. Ciemny, mahoniowy kolor z rubinowym refleksem. Piana obfita,beżowa, opada powoli. W zapachu i smaku dominuje karmel ,lekko palony słód,porządna dawka suszu owocowego z naciskiem na figi i daktyle. W tle nuty skórki chlebowej, ciastek i orzechow.Wysycenie nie jest duze ,lekko oleista konsystencja,słodycz na dość wysokim poziomie. Zdradliwie ukryty alkohol..
4.0 Bevuta in bottiglia. È stata una sorpresa. Birra ambrata. Buon aroma e gusto leggermente dolce finale. Molto equilibrata.

3.8 Bottle from Cornelius. Pours clear deep brown amber. Nose is toffee, caramel, hint of spices, sweet, dried and ripe fruits, rich in sweet malts. Tastes remains rich and sweet, malt forward, bready malts, light bitter, light spices, caramel, warming. Very good, if not extraordinary, example of the underestimated style.
3.8 Bottle at home. Pours deep amber, nose is caramel, toffee, hint of fruit, taste is sweet, fruity, sticky toffee, caramel.
4.2 500ml bottle, from (I think) Sinh4. Thanks Stephan! Pours a clear amber, foamy off-white head that subsides. Aroma is sweet caramel. Taste presents a great sweetness with smooth, doughy caramel.. lovely and balanced.. just rich enough with a hint of spice and brittle hammer toffee. Excellent doppelbock.
3.7 07-03-20 // 500ml bottle at home. Monks knew how to break their lent ;) - a full bodied and rich Doppelbock. Sweet yes but not overly and not too much. Roasted caramel. Caramelized malts. Some more roast. Rich light viscous mouthfeel. A very mild hop note at the end. Good.
5.0 Lovely and sweet. Not as strong as expected for beer with the abv on it. Very drinkable and went very well with turkey. Will definitely have it again.
